8677: Ultimate Build Mater
    Cars, 2011
    More details...
    ©2011 LEGO Group

I don't know where grogall finds them, but he's come up trumps again with nice images of seven of the Cars sets due out soon. I've added them here and you can see the hi-res versions on Brickshelf.  Apparently there'll be 14 sets in total, which is a massive number for the first year of a theme. However I suspect this will be the only batch of them. Until Cars 3, anyway.

As you'll see there are some nice new parts and interesting coloured pieces. The decorations are printed, not stickers. Is that good or bad? I suppose it depends on whether you intend reusing the pieces.

    (thanks r4-g9 for the news)

Sweet! Sweet! Sweet!

Posted by nandel in United States, 16 Feb 2011 16:56

I'm surprised there's no Doc Hudson. These Ultimate build sets look much better than the toy story ones.

Posted by legos in United States, 16 Feb 2011 16:56

Huw , add Maters spy jet escape! My brothers exited about them because he LOVES Cars. whos Grogall ,but if he added the Harry Potter sets THANK YOU! Get up the HP 2011 sets to !!you have the pictures!!!

Posted by CapnRex101 in United Kingdom, 16 Feb 2011 17:18

I love the look of the V8 cafe, that would go very well in a Lego city I think, especially if you have missed out on Lego city garages in recent years. I can see this theme selling very well (not so much to adults of course) but I imagine it will sell better than Toy Story, and that sold pretty well!

Posted by Orange Lemons in United States, 16 Feb 2011 17:23

I really think those cars look too rounded and are too 'printified' since the prints can't be used very well anywhere bedsides Cars-themed MOCs. In this case I'd prefer stickers for the option of not putting them on. I'll pass on these.

Posted by Darthblaker74744 in United Kingdom, 16 Feb 2011 17:28

has anyone noticed that it says a113 on the tail of the jet-plane

Posted by kaboomlegoman in United States, 16 Feb 2011 17:42

AWESOME!!! My little brother has loved Cars ever since he was two, so he'll definitely be getting these! I might get some too. I think the printed parts are much better, because I don't intend to do MOCs with them. Anyway, thank you SO MUCH Grogall! First Harry Potter and now these, you are a miracle!

Posted by DrDaveWatford in United Kingdom, 16 Feb 2011 17:47

These sets are surprisingly cool.....man, this is going to be a shockingly expensive year !
A couple of interesting colours I don't think I've seen before in the V8 Cafe set....olive green & pale turquoise ?

Posted by ritzcrackerman in United States, 16 Feb 2011 17:55

Printed pieces being "bad"? Of course not. At this juncture, that is a selling point for me.
I'm fed up with these terrible, terrible stickers.

Posted by Jarod98 in United Kingdom, 16 Feb 2011 18:17

Wow! It's been a long time since I've seen Cars... something like four years ago? Anyway, I'm not going to be collecting this theme, but the Ultimate Build Mator seems kinda interesting. The fact that the designs are printed is a thumbs-up, hopefully Lego will continue to do this.

Posted by brickmatt in United States, 16 Feb 2011 18:29

The Cars minisite on Lego.com (USA) is up.

Posted by cjg in United States, 16 Feb 2011 18:48

@Darthblaker: That's awesome!

Posted by MisterGeolix814 in United States, 16 Feb 2011 19:53

Hm..... I was suprized to see they were not duplo...

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 16 Feb 2011 20:12

@MisterGeolix814, I thought the same thing - didn't the original announcement say Cars on Duplo [only]?
EDIT: WOW these look amazing!

Posted by Bee815 in United States, 16 Feb 2011 20:22

@Jon and Mister: The Duplo wasn't selling well. I thought the same thing (these were going to be Duplo)until I saw the toy fair photos.

Posted by madforLEGO in United States, 16 Feb 2011 20:25

I just want the airplane from the spy jet escape

Posted by LEGO_Lord in United States, 16 Feb 2011 20:44

I don't really care for this theme, the movie is rated G. I would guess that the reason that they made this theme is because Pirates of the Caribbean is rated PG-13, and they usually have PG licensing.

Posted by BobaFett2 in United States, 16 Feb 2011 21:09

Am I crazy, or am I seeing cars with sniper rifles?

Posted by MisterGeolix814 in United States, 16 Feb 2011 21:12

@BobaFett2: the main theme in cars 2 is spies, and the "bad guys" have sniper rifles. i might have t get a few just for the guns. :D

Posted by krklint in United States, 16 Feb 2011 22:12

Printed bricks are my fav! I'll take them over stickers any day. If I need a non-printed brick, off to bricklink we go, we go :)

Posted by sweetbayag in United States, 16 Feb 2011 22:13

awesome! gotta have these sets. :)

Posted by Modok in United States, 16 Feb 2011 22:19

BobaFett2 - um...no, those are definitely cars with sniper rifles.

Posted by Ypres in Canada, 16 Feb 2011 22:29

I think these will sell at first (because of the movie rush) then It'll slowly die out... my guess is stores will start puting it for 50% off after half a year or more. Besides, there's plenty of stuff which'll catch a kids eye coming out this spring/summer. Personally I hate printed pieces for the cars... it's a crime. Now no one can buy the jet and peel the stupid eye piece off!!! Waste!!! Most of these I don't even think I'd buy for half price now.

Posted by LEGO_Lord in United States, 16 Feb 2011 22:51

Man, the worst from LEGO... stick with DUPLO and DUPLO only. The next worst theme is Galidor by far.

Posted by nexus15 in United States, 16 Feb 2011 23:02
Apparently there'll be 14 sets in total, which is a massive number for the first year of a theme.
Not so bad when you realize most of the sets will be under $30 ;)

Posted by jagdjh in United States, 16 Feb 2011 23:26

Does anyone know when these will be available? Will the Duplo sets be out at the same time? I noticed that there weren't many pictures from the trade shows of Duplo sets. I am really hoping that they bring back the Castle and Pirate themes in Duplo soon.

Posted by CharlieTheFunEngine in Australia, 17 Feb 2011 01:09

Hmm... saw these pics a few days ago but hey, it's great to see them on Brickset!
Printed pieces are fantastic, I hate stickers and never even put them on.

Posted by voypro in United States, 17 Feb 2011 01:26

@Ypres - I could not disagree more. Stickers = Cheap. Nothing chesses me off more than paying $50 for a set and finding that lego did nothing but use stock inventory. Prince of Persia was the worst, I am still seeing them at TRU for 80% of their original SRP. Disney "Cars" is a classic and will continue to be... while race cars are a classic Lego theme. It is a good marketing match. I hope your right I would love to pick these up for 50% of retail... but it is never going to happen. One big factor here is Children. If I were to quote some of the not for kids language in the "Clone Wars" the moderators would edit them. I can't let my two youngest kids watch it. You can watch Cars with the whole family. Lego will be reaching a new younger demo with these small bricks. I look forward to building each and every set with my little dudes.

Posted by lemaskdemasque in United Kingdom, 17 Feb 2011 02:26

Hey, look on the last set, with the yellow car. His earphones are the weightlifters weights in series 2!

Posted by modena in Italy, 17 Feb 2011 02:38

I don't like to reuse bricks. I only build my own models of sets by either combining two or rebuilding one.
I don't like Cars, anyway!

Posted by CharlieTheFunEngine in Australia, 17 Feb 2011 03:01

Descriptions of the remaining three sets that no pictures have been found of can be found here:
http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=site%3Awww.hamleys.com+LEGO+Cars&btnG=Search&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=
"Page Is Not Found" when you click the links.

However, the little segments on the search page tell us that 8424 Mater's Spy Zone includes Mater, Holley and a train, 8426 Escape at Sea includes Finn, Prof. Z and a "Battle Boat", and 8639 Big Bentley Bust Out includes McQueen, Mater, Finn and Holley.

Posted by megaelch in Germany, 17 Feb 2011 03:31

As a long time Cars die cast collector and Lego fan as well i must say the sets lack detail and styling on almost all levels and are the worst "Cars" merchandise i have seen in the last few years ....
The Mack truck looks OK but the rest is just plain bad . I see them in the stores 70% off like all the Toy Story 3 sets within 5 month from release.

Posted by Markey in Belgium, 17 Feb 2011 04:09

Finally printed pieces! I think these sets look brilliant, I'll be getting most of them.
@Darthblaker74744: well spotted :)

Posted by Jarod98 in United Kingdom, 17 Feb 2011 07:56

@MisterGeolix814 - When did Cars 2 come out? I'm in Jr. High so I don't really want to see the movie(s), but I know that Cars was a good movie for little kids, so I'm not surprised they came out with a sequel.

@LEGO_Lord - I don't see what you mean? Obviously these will be centered on little kids since some will have seen this movie, as compared to most not seeing PotC, but it's not like Legos can "scare" kids (which is why there's rating in movies). To me, it doesn't matter what themes Legos come from, it's just bricks made outta plastic. Lego's made Prince of Persia (PG-13), Indiana Jones (two movies were PG, the other two were PG-13), Star Wars (five movies where PG, one movie was PG-13), Star Wars: The Clone Wars (the movie and TV series are both PG), Ben 10 (PG), Harry Potter (I'm not exactly sure which movies were rated what, but I know they were either PG or PG-13), so it seems like Toy Story is the only other licensed theme that is rated G.

Posted by AZFIREWOLF in United States, 17 Feb 2011 08:53

I think that a lot of the car sets remind me of the following themes: Ferrari (the truck), Speed Racer. There are other aspects from other themese as well. Lego you need to come up with new designs. The only set that I really am going to care about is the spy plane. Better yet, i just want the instructions so that I can build the plane.

Posted by natro220 in United States, 17 Feb 2011 09:23

@AZFIREWOLF - I agree, not a lot of originality. But I think the target market for these sets is little kids who are just coming out of using Duplos. I don't intend to get any of these sets...way too much coming out that really appeals to me this year, PotC, HP, SW, Kingdom, Lighthouse...

Posted by LEGO_Lord in United States, 17 Feb 2011 09:49

One of these Cars sets is titled "Classic Mater' but how is he classic?

Posted by natro220 in United States, 17 Feb 2011 09:56

Maybe Mater in Cars 2 gets tricked out somehow?

Posted by IlovePowerMiners in United Kingdom, 17 Feb 2011 10:08

A simple Google Images search for "Cars 2 Francesco" will lead you to a picture of the ultimate build one, non watermarked, but with a logo of a website over it. :3

Posted by cjg in United States, 17 Feb 2011 11:08

@Jarod98: Cars 2 comes out in late June, I believe.

Posted by BobaFett2 in United States, 17 Feb 2011 13:27

I wouldn't say this is close to as bad as Galidor...

Anyways, they look interesting, but the printing may actually hinder my use of the parts. Too bad. If only they printed in better themes....

Posted by Blackicep8ntball in United States, 17 Feb 2011 13:38

Ahhh! Huge fan of the printed parts! I loved that the Toy Story sets were printed, and I love that these are too. I hope Disney keeps forcing Lego to use printed parts for their licenses.

To those of you who don't like the printed parts because you can't use the parts for other things... Lego parts are meant to be designed for a specific use so that you have to get creative to use the parts again. I mean, you don't complain that a cup piece looks like a cup, just because you can't use it for a different build in a different setting. Why should a printed part be any different? Sure it's use-ability is decreased in one aspect, but it's also increased in another.

Posted by cinrose in United States, 17 Feb 2011 14:38

Not a big fan of the Disney/Lego set, but these look pretty awesome!

Posted by modena in Italy, 17 Feb 2011 14:56

Well done grogall!

Posted by Ypres in Canada, 17 Feb 2011 15:41

@Voypro - You have a good point. I hate stickers too, but for some of the car's decals I would've liked optional stickers... because I'm 17 not 10. Yeah I agree Cars is very good for kids, but I hate when something gets milked for all its worth (that's my personal issue). I still think the Cars sets will drop eventually. There's so much kid junk out there (going to be directed at Cars movie) and so many good Lego sets coming out I'm not sure when Parents could afford buying a kid's entire 'want list'... in which case I'm sure lots of the Cars sets will be behind some of the other themes like NinjaGo and the Disney Pirates theme. Well my sister works part-time in a TRU so she'll update me on the sales rates of these Lego sets.

Posted by Jarod98 in United Kingdom, 17 Feb 2011 16:27

@cjg - So it hasn't come out yet? Okay.

Posted by Firox 5000 in United Kingdom, 17 Feb 2011 16:44

They look ok , But there not really my thing. I might buy ultimate Mater and Lighting but that might be all.

Posted by TooMuchLEGO in United States, 17 Feb 2011 17:49

Did I see the word PRINTED? As in, NO STICKERS?! :D That adds another reason to buy this theme! :)

Posted by LegoCity578 in United States, 17 Feb 2011 18:30

Is this Lego and duplo combined?

Posted by AETerry in United States, 17 Feb 2011 18:46

With the exception of the Duplo Toy Story sets, I passed on Toy Story, but then they were gotten for my daughter. I'll likely pass on the Cars theme unless it turns out she'd like to get them. But the adult collector here will be passing. They're good. They just don't catch my interest as a theme I'd get.

Posted by legos in United States, 17 Feb 2011 18:47

I agree with Orange Lemons!

Posted by refriedbeans in United States, 17 Feb 2011 20:47

So Huw your saying there are NO stickers?

Posted by CharlieTheFunEngine in Australia, 18 Feb 2011 03:18

@ LEGO_Lord - Mater is covered in spy gadgets in some parts of Cars 2, making him look like the Ultimate Build set. This Mater with no gadgets is therefore "classic" in comparison.

@ Blackicep8ntball - "You don't complain that a cup piece looks like a cup, just because you can't use it for a different build in a different setting". I love that comment. Puts in into perspective for all the haters...

@ refriedbeans - I have a bad feeling that the Cars theme will be like the Toy Story one - mostly printed but then one annoying set with stickers (Woody's Roundup)...

Posted by jarom_moroni in United States, 18 Feb 2011 10:11

Woohoo for printed bricks again!

Posted by vynsane in United Kingdom, 18 Feb 2011 10:53

Man, that targeting screen on Mater looks AWESOME!

Posted by Sky-guardian in United States, 18 Feb 2011 12:26

Well, they gave away half the movie...

Posted by CharlieTheFunEngine in Australia, 18 Feb 2011 18:28

@ Sky-guardian - How do you figure? Anyone that is a fan of Cars by any measure already knew that the new movie would involve racing and spies, and, if they've been on Pixar's YouTube page anytime recently, they would know the names and designs of most of the characters. The Tokyo International Circuit was seen in the trailer and Flo's V8 Cafe and Mack are from the first film. The only thing seen in any of these sets that wasn't shown anywhere else prior to the release of these shots are the gadgets on the Ultimate Build Mater.

Posted by LukeSkywalker in Ireland, 18 Feb 2011 18:42

My 2 cents - Stickers are an abomination, and Prints rule. Imagine trying to perfectly line up all the stickers that could have been required to make these caracters (see what I did there) come to life? Absolute nightmare. In my opinion, prints are always the best option, really wish they were implemented in the Pirates of the Caribbean sets but from the looks of the pictures they're going the sticker route. I can see why some people would like the option of stickers, but these sets were designed purely for the Cars movie so having permanent prints are great, unstickered pieces are available in abundance through other sets and sources.

I really like the look and design of these sets, and even though the theme wouldn't personally interest me much, I might be tempted to buy one or two. To think that they could have been made in Duplo, sends a shiver down my spine, shudder...

Posted by Sky-guardian in United States, 19 Feb 2011 11:15

@ TinyTurbosCityAndToyStory - Granted if you follow all the details i'm sure it's not that big of a surprise, but the names "Big Bentley Bust Out" and "Escape at Sea" kind of give it away...

Posted by Odeinoichus in Canada, 19 Feb 2011 12:32

Chalk me up as a convert, I had 0 interest in the Cars Theme, but upon seeing pictures I can safely say they will stand proudly next to my Toy Story and other Disney sets on the shelf. Although I may only be picking up a select few rather than trying to get the entire Theme as I do with other collections.

I for one applaud LEGO's decision to use printed pieces, it saves on having to worry if the sticker sheets will be bent or creased in the packaging. Despite lacking true Mini-Figures, each and every one of those Cars characters definitely has Mini-Figure like appeal to them. Too bad they didn't slip in the Twins from the first movie into a set surrounding the Piston Cup... And yeah, where is Doc Hudson ALIAS the Hudson Hornet?

Oh well, everything else looks 100% awesome, and on the plus side they will most likely be relatively inexpensive for the most part even with the exchange rate from US Standard pricing to Canadian. (Or however it goes.)

I for one don't think Duplo sets are all too appealing for the adult collector, so I'm glad I can get a few Cars characters in LEGO form in the near future without worrying about the scale issues too much. Combine a few LEGO City sets with these Cars characters and you can have endless possibilities for whacky displays. (Such as a LEGO City Criminal trying to escape Lightning McQueen only to discover that the Car has no driver's compartment and can talk, Kapow!)

Posted by bic3 in United Kingdom, 19 Feb 2011 15:33

I have to admit these look better than I thought they would. I'm still undecided whether I'll buy any but the larger sets are quite tempting. Of course the price will be a big factor and I'm sure a few will end up in my son's collection even if I decide not to bother!

Posted by pop3465 in United States, 19 Feb 2011 21:29

I really like these there nice! But I would pick Printed over Stickers,But I don't make Make Big giant Lego creations I just making creation from the theme(Power Miners I make custom Power Miner sets(Sometimes).
Sky-Guardian-If it spoiled the movie for you then why did you look at them,Sometimes I look at stuff that wasin't realesed but then I'm bored because I looked at them ahead of time.I know pokemon Does not interest you but when I looked at them they were cool,But when they came out I was disapointed Because I Already saw them,we do this with lego to,But its up to you to look at these sets.I was not interested in harry potter till I saw the sets now I'm hooked, and on the six book!of course Big bently Burst or the other names out does not reaveal the whole move too Ya-know.

But its marked and low res photos, but at this site it has what number it is but has no info about the set besides the date it will be released,-http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/8678_Ultimate_Build_Francesco
Sky-Guardian,Uhh my last commit came out wrong when I said why did you look at them I ment It does not spoil the whole movie.

Posted by carabino in United Kingdom, 21 Feb 2011 02:06

Doc is not in the new movie, likely because actor Paul Newman, who voiced Doc, passed away in 2008. Fillmore is also absent, similarly likely due to George Carlin having passed away in 2008 as well.

Definitely going for Ultimate Build Mater, and probably Spy Jet Escape for the plane. A coworker's 4yo is more into the diecasts, not quite beyond Duplo, so not sure if these are gift candidates, yet...

Posted by clone commander trainrex in United States, 21 Feb 2011 13:09

There seem to be no sets from the previous film. Thats too bad because I might have bought them.

Posted by CharlieTheFunEngine in Australia, 22 Feb 2011 03:11

@ carabino - Correct, Doc is not in Cars 2, but Fillmore is. Check out this Cars 2 wallpaper featuring Fillmore: http://pixar.wikia.com/File:Cars-2-fillmore.jpg

@ clone commander trainrex - Two of the sets are based on the first movie, 8486 and 8487.
