I've added series 1 to the gallery

Wouldn't the Ninja go under "Historical" alongside the Samurai?

Posted by cjg in United States, 14 Mar 2011 18:13

^Exactly what I was wondering.

Posted by Pepper in United States, 14 Mar 2011 18:23

excellent gallery Huw!

Posted by yellowcastle in United States, 14 Mar 2011 18:23

Maybe they're still common in the UK?

Posted by legoDad42 in United States, 14 Mar 2011 18:25

I like the distinctions for S1 and S3 in parenthesis. That works great...but I still think the categories should be...

Arts and Entertainment...here is where you can put the Clown, Magician, etc.

Sports and Recreation...

Fantasy and Sci-Fi...

Historical...like you have it but here you should put in the Ninja.

City/Town....

Less categories (only 5) which covers everything.

Posted by yys4u in United States, 14 Mar 2011 18:27

^ I second that. But if you leave it thats fine too.
I also second SJPlego. Ninja should be historical right?
And I don't like the "present day sports" Should just be sports...

Posted by LukeSkywalker in Ireland, 14 Mar 2011 18:32

Great job! :) But yeah, it should just be "sports", can't really see Lego releasing figures that will fall into a "sports of the past" category (or "sports of the future" for that matter, lol).

Posted by K-nut in United States, 14 Mar 2011 18:58

The gallery looks great but I agree, wouldn't Ninja be in historical? If you could explain that would be great.

Posted by Duraz in United States, 14 Mar 2011 19:34

I agree that the ninja should be in historical, and I think that skater should be in sports.

Posted by MCLegoboy in United States, 14 Mar 2011 19:37

There are also two historicals, what does that mean? I also think that if the figure came with extra faces or different headgear, that you should put pictures of those as well. Ex: The Magician and the Mime.

Posted by KeeZor in Denmark, 14 Mar 2011 19:51

the ninja could be in historical, but ninjas still exist, as it is a martial art, so present day is not directly wrong.
However you could argue that ninjas in lego sets, come with the samurais, and so must be from the same time.

Just wanted to give my opinion on that.

And btw. great galleries, would be very nice with an exception to the "no accessories" rule, as it imo is a big part of the characters in these series.

Posted by dinotrexbricks in United States, 14 Mar 2011 19:51

The gallery is awesome...but dump the categories. Stick with the series...let the LEGO fans categorize their own collection.

Posted by j3tforc3g3mini in United States, 14 Mar 2011 20:11

I agree with all those who want to place the ninja in the historical category.

Posted by Timothywking in United States, 14 Mar 2011 20:31

will you be doing a Star Wars gallery Huw?

Posted by cjg in United States, 14 Mar 2011 20:32

I agree that there should be accessories in the pictures.

Posted by ericjohn in United States, 14 Mar 2011 20:39

I don't think that the forestman is really "historical" and would better fit into the "fantasy" section alongside the elf and monsters. I'd love someone to prove me wrong, but I don't think historically anyone really dressed like that. Especially rogue men that lived on a little budget and in the forest.

I'd say that the ninja should also be placed in the historical section. I don't think that the term "ninja" is really used as seriously as it once was. Again, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that a modern day "ninja" is called a shinobi.

I like that the skater was not placed in the "sports" section. This skater seems like the kid that is out in front of the library not a professional.

That said, the "present day" section is beginning to look like a hodgepodge. Pulling the Clown, Gorilla Suit Guy, Hula Dancer, Magician, and Rapper into an "entertainment" section seems obvious. Breaking the "present day" category into "careers" and "arts and recreation" (to include the skater) seems like the best fix to me after looking over the page a bit.

Good job, Huw!

Posted by Bee815 in United States, 14 Mar 2011 22:14

Move the skater to the sports catogory.

Posted by Higgins in United States, 14 Mar 2011 22:35

Looks great. Thanks so much!

Posted by LeGoB12A21 in Canada, 14 Mar 2011 22:37

@ericjohn-well the skater should be in the sports section because its a sport, and you don`t have to be professional to consider yourself to be doing a sport.

Also, great job Huw on the galleries!

Posted by Morgan19 in United States, 14 Mar 2011 23:28

Judging by all the various conflicting sorting opinions (if this one thread is any indication), wouldn't the obvious method of sorting be just by Series, dropping the arbitrary categories altogether? What's the rationale behind NOT doing it that way?

Posted by Dash Justice in United States, 14 Mar 2011 23:51

Why not change 'present day-sports' to simply 'sports'

Posted by LegoC10 in United States, 15 Mar 2011 00:18

I would put the ninja into historical. I would also turn 'present day-sports' to simply 'sports'. Otherwise, I think that it is great!

Posted by Orthobotrex in Philippines, 15 Mar 2011 02:27

I like a sports and recreation category because in my opinion, for example, the "skater boy" is just that...he's a kid who doesn't even have safety gear. If we endorse a sport as such, then we're remiss on safety. ;-)

You could group the fisherman there as well because he could be doing fishing as a pastime. If he's a professional angler, then they should have put a bigger type of fish.

And now that the characters are diversifying in the present day category, I'm not sure now what present day means.

Regarding Huw 's decision to categorize the figs, I'd say it's about creative license. It's a gallery, essentially, and these pictures may represent works of art in a sense.

X-)

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 15 Mar 2011 03:22

Thanks for all your suggestions. I'll add S2, hopefully later today, then we can collectively evaluate the categories.

I've moved the Ninja to historical: guess I've been watching too many 'Ninja Assassin' type films :)

Posted by the_real_indy in United States, 15 Mar 2011 03:39

So far, definitely 99% of us agree that we just need to start by creating an "Arts and Entertainment" category, a "Sports and Recreation" category, and a "City Workers/Careers" category.

Once we do that, we can go ahead and delete the generic and miscellaneous "present day" label. In fact, I think you should just go ahead and do that now before everybody dies of confusion! XD

...Then we can all move forward to thinking about merging or splitting sub-categories...

...And then we can all vote over figs that might fit in two categories...

Personally, I love the debate!

Posted by MinifigureMan in United Kingdom, 15 Mar 2011 04:54

Good but there are 2 historical sections. ;) Other than that, I say they are all fine! Except maybe the mummy still needs to be in historic.

Posted by Orthobotrex in Philippines, 15 Mar 2011 05:29

I'll agree with a historical mummy if it has its eyes closed and it's forearms crossed over its chest. ;-) Maybe even Mr. Hawass would agree to that.

Posted by xcrossx in United Kingdom, 15 Mar 2011 06:12

One word: Fantastic! I think the putting of S1/2 etc after the name is perfect!

Posted by Wolfy 8880 in Australia, 15 Mar 2011 06:39

Don't listen to the nay-sayers who want you to drop the categories, Huw. You've done this categorization with all your minifig galleries so far, and it increases their usability greatly. People should have a look at your Indiana Jones gallery, for example.

The one category I think is obvious is movie villains. That includes the zombie, werewolf, vampire, mummy (obviously a horror-movie cursed mummy), Dr Frankenstein & his monster, the witch from the Wizard of Oz, King Kong, Godzilla, and I would argue the robot (obvious to me it's a 1950's horror-movie robot) and bug-eyed, little, green man too.

Posted by mlavwilson in United States, 15 Mar 2011 07:11

You galleries are great. I would like to echo others, the categories need to go. Or better yet, you should be able to group by series as well. As this grows I can see value in having multiple ways to group.

Series
Category
Gender
...

Posted by fredolego in France, 15 Mar 2011 07:22

legoDad42's proposition is perfect! :)

Posted by Be-Burger in Israel, 15 Mar 2011 07:44

I think you need a "Circus" category.

Posted by billyaplin77 in United Kingdom, 15 Mar 2011 07:45

I think you should put the Ninja into Modern Day. And perhaps you could categorise the minifigs according to the colour of their hands. Otherwise, great work Huw!

Posted by fredolego in France, 15 Mar 2011 09:11

referendum!!!

Posted by vpustote in United States, 15 Mar 2011 10:23

Wouldn't Deep Sea Diver be apart of sports, such as it's a sport that people enjoy to do?

Posted by skipper1011 in United States, 15 Mar 2011 13:09

I have been hoping for a gallery like for as long as these minifigs have been around . GREAT JOB HUW. Agree with the need to change the catergories though.

Posted by BJ21 in United Kingdom, 15 Mar 2011 13:49

I like the idea of non-series based categories, but with the option to view particular series as has been suggested in the same way as the yellow/flesh skin colour option. No matter what, thanks loads for doing these, they are great pics.

Posted by Night City Dream in Russian Federation, 15 Mar 2011 16:32

Dear Brickset Administration: WHEN will you manage to count the pieces in all collectable minifigs sets? I wrote you several times but in vain. The sets do not contain just "1 minifig", in fact they have 5 - 9 pieces but the database doesn't consider it. So, the users get a wrong total piece amount.

Posted by Doctor Leg O'Brick in United Kingdom, 15 Mar 2011 17:08

@ericjohn, Robin Hood lived in a forest, dressed like that and even looked like that figure. Funny that the Forestman is fireing an arow into my Dragon Knight right now in front of me...

Posted by youngtom in United States, 15 Mar 2011 17:20

You made 2 sections called Historical.

Posted by SapmiSatan in Norway, 15 Mar 2011 17:50

I second the "Circus" category! I think they should be divided into much more spesific categories: "Western", "Movies"(Robin Hood, The Wicked Witch, Sherlock Holmes, Musketeer, Gene Kelly...), "Sports", "Winter Sports", "Music", "Horror", "Japan"(yes, I'd say it's a sub-theme on its own: Ninja, Karate Master, Sumo Wrestler, Samurai Warrior & Geisha Girl...(& Godzilla?)). Also, what about a "Zoo" or "Amusement Park", for the zoo-keeper and the suit-guys.

Posted by LeGoB12A21 in Canada, 15 Mar 2011 18:08

^^there are supposed to be two historical sections to seperate the short and tall images(which it says up top)

Posted by TooMuchLEGO in United States, 15 Mar 2011 20:59

I would have preferred more of a theme category, like Circus, Sports, Music, and Water instead of Present, Historical and Fantasy.
