Brickset was hacked over the weekend

  • Brickset was hacked over the weekend

Posted by Huw, 26 May 2008 09:38. Filed under Brickset.

I don't know if it was done by a disgruntled former member or a robot, but Brickset was hacked twice over the weekend.

Consequently, to prevent further attack, the site is currently 'read-only': Reviews won't be saved, your collection can't be recorded and you can't rate reviews. If you attempt to, you'll see an error message. In addition I have taken the decision to remove news commenting for good. It is more trouble than it's worth.

My sincere apologies to genuine LEGO fans who used the site to spread useful news and comment. I am hoping to provide facilities in the future to enable you to contribute more easily to the news on the site.

This is a transient situation until I have rewritten the site to prevent attack, which won't be an overnight job but should be finished by the end of June. If you have any suggestions for improvement, use the contact form to let us know.

In the meantime, I'll continue to keep you updated on site progress and LEGO news, and please continue to click-through to LEGOshop.com via my links to show your support for the site.

    Thanks

    Huw

It turns out that Brickset was not targeted specifically, but that the attack originated from China and hit loads of sites last weekend. Brickset has now been protected against that kind of attack so we won't be having problems like that again.

When you say "rewriting" do you mean you're changing the whole site? I think that it's nice and easy to use, you did a good job when you made it.

Thanks Cole85459. Don't worry, the next version of the site will be just as easy to use and even better. I just need to find the time to do it. Now that the holes exploited by the hack have been filled, the pressure is off, but I'd like to have the site refreshed by the end of the year.

In away, was the hack good, as it showed up 'holes' in Brickset that were not defended against hacking, if you get what I mean?
