    Set 3661 "Bank and Money Transfer" has appeared at Kmart stores with a price of 89.00 AUD. At this price, it might be worth waiting for one of the sales that Kmart has from time-to-time on LEGO sets.

    From what I understand, Kmart will be the only Australian 'bricks-and-mortar' retailer to carry set 3661 on their shelves.

ToyWorld in New Zealand stocks it as well now, for $100 NZD. Got mine a couple of weeks ago.

With the Aussie $ as strong as it is we shouldn't be paying A$89 for sets like this. Even the Kmart sale prices are over the top.

We get absolutely shafted in Oz. Compare the USD price of the same set on ebay...you'll more than likely still be in front with postage taken into account...and it's not just lego...hasbro (action figures) is shocking too! The question I need ansered is - is this caused by local greedy retaillers or is this greedy local branches of lego and hasbro...until they're comparative to US prices I'll just keep buying my stuff direct from the USA - eBay all the way!

Yeah, in the US this set goes for US$55, here in Oz it's going for the equivalent of $98. If anyone's interested in ordering any Lego from the states, it seems Barnes and Noble will ship US Lego at US prices to Australia. Just ordered Queen Anne's Revenge at 40% off, including shipping.

I saw this a few weeks ago. It's a beautiful set. But the price is ridiculous. I'd pay $50 at most for it -- and if I lived in America, that's how much I *would* be paying for it. But not here.

So I won't be buying it. It's too much, Lego. You're asking for too much money, so I'm gonna start giving you *none*.

I picked this set up on sale for 55 CDN, and did not think it was worth the price, hold off until a sale.

@itsaturkey - with the exchange rate at the moment its more like 90usd equals 50 aud! $1aud=$1.06usd at the moment so you can understand why we australian buyers are annoyed. its like lego are still pricing for when the oz dollar was at $0.50USD.

This popped up in my local K-Mart a few weeks ago.... Picked it up the other day, and I think I'm the only person to buy one since they landed.....

I built it the other day.... I felt extremely ripped off... It's only on a 8 x 16 base plate, and doesn't use all the space.....
It is not worth the $89 at all......

If you're thinking about buying it now, wait until the mid-year Toy Sales... They usually offer a small discount on recent sets, and much bigger discounts on the older stuff

Arrived back from Singapore this morning and picked up this set for $79 SGD which translates to about $60 Aud. I agree, this is not a bad set but $89 is ridiculous. I won't buy these "Special Edition" sets that have been marked up from Australia any more - I'm fed up with Lego Australia screwing us over and would rather miss out than get ripped off. If anyone's interested, you can also pick up Mace Windu's Starfighter for $60 SGD or $45 Aud which is much better than the $69 Lego is quoting us from "Shop at Home." Any whilst we're on the topic of Lego overlooking us Australians, does anyone know why the Pharoah's Quest sets haven't reached our shores? I had a look at them whilst overseas and they're quite good - but my luggage restrictions just wouldn't allow me to be tempted..... =(

I'm going out on a limb here... But... With regards to the high pricing of LEGO product in Australia, a comment I picked up from a source within the LEGO Group was along the lines of:

"... (Market research) in Australia indicates that the LEGO product is viewed as a 'premier'/'premium' brand in the Australian marketplace, and that consumers are willing to pay more for such 'premium' brands. If you want prices to fall in the Australian marketplace, then you should stop buying LEGO (in Australia)."

Although this comment annoyed me, at the same time, it makes logical *business* sense to me. If people - not just LEGO fans, but the general consuming public - are willing to pay more for your product, then why wouldn't you sell your product to them at those higher prices.

Like most of you, I would appreciate lower shelf prices, but as was pointed out to me by a fellow AFOL, "LEGO isn't a charity - they're not about to sell you their product without making a decent profit". So, like many of you, I purchase from overseas sources - especially given the strong Australian Dollar at the present time. A shame really, but this is the current reality of being a LEGO fan in Australia....

@jpmanalo I understand what you're saying but the thing is, if Lego thinks that they're a premium brand in Oz, why then do they keep treating us like rubbish? It's not just the pricing - what about the limited selection here compared to Europe and the U.S.? I mean, I haven't seen a Pharoah's Quest set anywhere, Architecture has yet to make any appearance whatsoever and that's before we even consider the absence promotional and miniature building sets. To be honest, I was staggered with the fact that last year, the White Boba Fett figure actually made an appearance at Toyworld stores.

On top of that, some exclusive sets are incredibly hard to find. Last year's Imperial Flagship, Emerald Night and Grand Emporium flew off the shelves so many AFOL's missed out. And this year, I haven't even caught a glimpse of Diagon Alley, which was release 5 months ago in other parts of the world.

I think TLG need to get their act together........ but I do accept your point about the business side of things.....

im pissed off about lego's pricing in Australia in general. I mean the new POTC sets are all DOUBLE the price of what americans are paying !!!!! it is cheaper to buy from the internet from an online toy store even with the shipping costs included. I think more and more aussies will be doing that now since our dollar is so strong. Same thing happened with BOOKS, and look at Borders and Angus&Robertson stores today in Australia !!!!

@dulim - I agree with you on all the points you raise. I suspect that LEGO Australia is pretty much "held to ransom" by the large retailers - i.e. Myer, Woolworths Group (Big W), Coles Group (Target, K-Mart), and David Jones. I suspect that the large retailers almost dictate to LEGO Australia when and what sets they want to release to the Australian market through their retail channels, which in turn dictates what the smaller, independent stores are able to get into their stores.

@hanzocloud - Borders (Australia) and Angus & Robertson went under, not because they weren't making money, but because they (the companies) were burdened with debt transferred to them by their (now previous) private-equity fund owners (Pacific Equity Partners). Prior to them being owned by that private-equity fund, I believe that both Borders and Angus & Robertson were making reasonbly healthy profits. I should note that both Angus & Robertson and Borders (Australia) were brands run by REDGroup Retail, who in turn is owned by Pacific Equity Partners.

89.00 Australian Dollars = 95.79 US Dollars

55.00 US Dollars = 51.10 Australian Dollars

this maybe not correct. i used oz forex currency converter. no wonder it's cheaper to buy the same product from overseas.
