    More details...

The Master Builder Academy (MBA) is now up for pre-order on the US LEGO Shop on-line site.

There are two options available at the moment -

    - MBA Kit #1 is available to order at US $29.99
    - MBA Kit #2-#6 is available as a subscription for US $69.99

No confirmed dates, but we believe Kit #1 will ship later this month (May) and, if you take up the subscription, the other sets will follow at roughly two monthly intervals (i.e. Kit #2 in July, Kit #3 in September, etc.)

I saw the MBA Kit #1 picture here before the article got posted, and it looks cool! HOWEVER... $30 for Kit #1, and $70 for MBA Kits #2-#6. Is it good value-for-money?

EDIT: Hm, the sets DO look nice! Will we have less horrible "Cool Creations" featured on the LEGO Club Magazine, then? I hope so...

EDIT 2: The set pages have links to this page: http://mba.lego.com/en-us/Default.aspx It's still unfinished. You CAN, however, view some videos.

EDIT 3: Woah, it has been finished! In an instant!

EDIT 4: Parents, look here: http://mba.lego.com/en-us/parents/default.aspx

EDIT 5: If you're on the English LEGO.com and the links above mess up the page, change to the American site!

When I spoke to the lego rep on the phone, she said the sets are around 200 pieces each. Directions to make 3 different sets.

The first comes with a special minifigure, I'm using the idea of what does a set around 200 pieces sell for in a store? Around 20 to 25$? If so this isn't bad for exclusive sets.

Posted by vamproe in United States, 02 May 2011 16:28

just checked out the links and glad I joined.

Posted by Carnigee77 in United States, 02 May 2011 16:29

Im comfused. Do you have to buy the sets than subscribe to the magazine to get instructions?

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 02 May 2011 16:39

@Carnigee: No, Kit #1 has a handbook with 2 techniques. If you want to continue, you have to subscribe.

Posted by teal93mr2 in United States, 02 May 2011 16:42

Pretty cool stuff. Definitely interested in Kit #1 at the least. Are these going to be available at local lego stores?

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 02 May 2011 16:48

@vamproe: Joined what? :P Brickset? :P Or the MBA? :P

Posted by vamproe in United States, 02 May 2011 17:02

The MBA. Was glad I joined brickset allloooong time ago :)

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 02 May 2011 17:04

@vamproe: So you BOUGHT the sets?

Posted by atkinsar in United Kingdom, 02 May 2011 17:44

Please keep it on topic people, thanks.

Posted by stoneboys in United States, 02 May 2011 17:50

They should make it at least $30 for all of them not $70.

Posted by Ypres in Canada, 02 May 2011 17:51

The MBA looks nice... but (again) since I'm in Canada I have to say no. The first one would cost at least $40 and with shipping and taxes I'm paying more than $50! The only way to take less damage would be to order it in the states. That kind of defeats the purpose since I'd only ever get them in bulk (when my aunt goes into Canada). I'm not ignoring the fact that it would still cost $100 in the US, it's just that after thinking about Canadian pricing I don't care what Americans have to pay.

Posted by Jayr17 in United States, 02 May 2011 18:04

$100 for six kits does not sound bad ($30 for #1, and $70 for #2-6), that is less than $17 each. If they have 200+ pieces than it is a bargain. Do you think they will ever have a MBA for modular buildings?

Posted by brankell5566 in Canada, 02 May 2011 18:35

I thought this program would be available worldwide, not only in the US?

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 02 May 2011 18:36

@brankell: Me too!

Posted by atkinsar in United Kingdom, 02 May 2011 18:43

^^ the intention is to release it worldwide, but not right away. It will be launched in the US first and then rolled out worldwide. I guess there's the chance that if it doesn't sell well then it won't launched in other countries.

Posted by awesomestudios in United States, 02 May 2011 19:06

@atkinsar - But if lego was made in Denmark, shouldn't it be in Europe first?

Posted by Retsnom Kcor in United States, 02 May 2011 19:22

@awesomestudios - My guess would be that they are releasing it in the US first because they already had Brickmaster, and it makes more sense to make the shift between Brickmaster to this than it does to just stop Brickmaster and start something new somewhere else.

Kit #1 looks kinda cool. The other ones, not really.

Posted by cmrt1014 in United States, 02 May 2011 19:27

@Jayr17 - If you look through the slide show / movie already on the mba site, there is a kit that address micro buildings. Not sure if that's what you're looking for or not...

Posted by Jarod98 in United Kingdom, 02 May 2011 20:47

I will probably buy the first kit to see how it is and if I like it I'll wait a while to see how other people take in the subscription before I give Lego another $70 of my money.

Posted by Erinlyn80 in United States, 02 May 2011 21:25

My son will only be 7 in July but hopefully it will till be of value if we do it together. We were kinda bummed when they did away with brickmaster it was like christmas getting a lego set in the mail every now and again!

Posted by IlovePowerMiners in United Kingdom, 02 May 2011 21:30

*Crosses fingers for something train related*

Posted by mysterygoo in United States, 02 May 2011 22:02

This seems like a fine replacement for Brickmaster, but going from $40 (officially $80) to $100 is a big jump, and I am not sure I would spend that on a maximum of 2 exclusive minifigures.

Posted by Mr. Football in United States, 02 May 2011 22:59

$100 for 1125 Pieces total, plus the curriculum and the sorting tray, etc. - works out to about 9 cents/piece

We loved Brickmaster, but we'll definitely try this out the first year. I wish they had a free shipping offer.

Posted by TheKingOfBuilding in United Kingdom, 03 May 2011 03:02

If the Lego group is launching the MBA in the US first, does that mean that the rest of the world will miss out on Levels 1 & 2?

This Master Builder Academy is a great idea except that the "exclusive minifigures" just have a different printing on the torso which, in my opinion, is not worth spending $30 on :-(

Another issuse (and a very big one) is that most serious Lego fans already know all of the techniques used in MBA.

Oh well, I live in the UK anyway...

EDIT: The sets do look alright though :-)

The Lego Shop says that it isn't available in the Canadian store. Too bad, my son would have love it.

Posted by vamproe in United States, 03 May 2011 11:58

so does that mean any bricks you put in the box are free?

WOW.....that seems better good!

Posted by ncbarrett in United States, 03 May 2011 12:33

@VAMPROE no you take the box to a lego store and fill it from pick a brick wall
before august 31

Posted by vamproe in United States, 03 May 2011 12:38

right, I understand that, but is there a charge for the bricks you put in the box? to me it almost sounds like the bricks I put in the box are free.

Posted by ncbarrett in United States, 03 May 2011 13:47

@vamproe yes everything that fits in the box (and it closes) is yours at no cost.
