Markey reports that "there will be a free LEGO promo set in next week's News of the World newspaper. I saw an ad in The Sun today. The set is 30131, 'Captain Jack Sparrow's boat'. Tomorrow, they'll have PotC sticker book and stickers."

It's bad enough having to buy The Mirror to get free LEGO but the NotW? We'll have to put bags on our heads when we go to the till to avoid the shame of it :-)

No word as to whether it comes with the paper or whether you collect it from somehere. I rather think it'll be the former given the thickness of most Sunday papers, that are often plastic wrapped. Let's hope so. You really will get some funny looks taking an armful of copies to the till, though :-)

Update: there's more! There'll be a total of seven sets to collect in The Sun and the NotW starting on 14th May, next Saturday.

See http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/free-lego-now-with-sun/934151. Unfortunately it's collect at WHS and TRU, not with the paper :-(  Thanks to Hob and atkinsar for this extra info.

Oh My God, what a great opportunity to get Hat Jack!! :) Plus a bottle and boat!! :)

Posted by MinifigureMan in United Kingdom, 07 May 2011 10:32

I think I know someone who gets that but doesn't want it! Or I might be able to get one anyway.

Posted by DrDaveWatford in United Kingdom, 07 May 2011 10:33

[shudder] You'd have to want this little set pretty badly to buy that 'newspaper'...........

Posted by legowhisperer in United Kingdom, 07 May 2011 11:08

Newspaper snobs!!!!!!

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 07 May 2011 11:12

WWWWWAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!! O_O Before I continue, who decides on the promos, the newspaper, or LEGO?

Posted by avacadoturban in United Kingdom, 07 May 2011 11:15

Excellent news (well, apart from having to buy a few copies of overpriced toilet paper)! I've been wondering where and when the POTC polybags would turn up; let's hope it comes with the paper so going through the self-checkouts can alleviate some of the shame :)

Posted by The_Box in United States, 07 May 2011 11:52

Let's hope this set ends up coming to the US.

Posted by starfire2 in United States, 07 May 2011 11:53

Hey can someone from the UK get me one! I have paypal!!

Posted by bionic force in United Kingdom, 07 May 2011 12:06

I dunno about anyone else, but I'm grabbing this for the fig alone. I'm after a jack figure but don't wanna spend £10.50 at the least on getting him.

Posted by atkinsar in United Kingdom, 07 May 2011 12:12

The only time I buy 'any' newspaper these days is when LEGO offers are on. This is great, whenever I see these new polybags in the Brickset database, I'm always hoping that they will be free giveaways with the Daily Mirror or another paper.

Can anyone find a link to this online, I can't.

Posted by Dlakii in Australia, 07 May 2011 12:19

This must be the most unusual promotional deal I've ever seen. I'm trying to think of why this... er, publication... would want to do a LEGO distribution, or why LEGO would want to distribute in it. I'm coming up with nothing and I'm quite thoroughly baffled by this. Or maybe I just don't want to consider the full implications of the intentions. Eh, one of the two.

I also should thank you for, through introducing me to News of the World, making me feel /considerably/ better about and more confident in the state of the press in Australia, which at its worst is utterly sterling compared to, well, NotW. :P

Posted by jamzee44 in United Kingdom, 07 May 2011 12:23

Is the POTC set in tomorrow (Sunday's) paper or one day next week?

Posted by atkinsar in United Kingdom, 07 May 2011 12:29

^ the News of The World is only published on a Sunday, it's not in tomorrows paper, but next Sunday's paper (the 15th) apparently.

Posted by Skrytsson in Sweden, 07 May 2011 12:42

How much does the paper cost?

Posted by itsaturkey in United States, 07 May 2011 14:54

What's 'News of the World'? Why is that Newspaper so bad?

Posted by MinifigureMan in United Kingdom, 07 May 2011 14:56

i am getting one next week, hopefully it is in the paper but if not I can get to a WHSmith's if that is where they are, really want to get Jack with his tricorne hat! And the rum! Who else thinks the bottles should have some rum in? Like the scientist has his green liquid we could have rum! :D Anyway, US and others, expect these to be very expensive and unfortunately maybe with the paper on Bricklink!

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 07 May 2011 14:58

@itsaturkey: Look it up. :P It's a tabloid newspaper. :P Phonehacking, offensive gossip, scandals... You get the idea. :P

Posted by thesinisterpenguin in United Kingdom, 07 May 2011 14:58

^ Perhaps all the rum is gone? ;D

Posted by Natotron1979 in United Kingdom, 07 May 2011 15:06

Torn. I really want this set. I really don't want to buy The News of the World.

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 07 May 2011 15:07

@Natotron: Wait for BrickLink, then. :P

Posted by LukeSkywalker in Ireland, 07 May 2011 15:10

@Skrytsson I think it costs £1 + your dignity.

Posted by wildcherryp3psi in United States, 07 May 2011 15:17

Yes, this looks like a cool little set to be able to have an extra Jack.

Posted by Hob in United Kingdom, 07 May 2011 15:31

Just spotted this on hot uk deals.

^ Excited to get those other sets, will be interesting to own some Pharoah's Quest and Ninjago! Thanks for sharing!

Posted by Hob in United Kingdom, 07 May 2011 15:54

Glad to. I'm sure someone else would have. Can't wait to get at least 2 each of the sets. Ninjago stuff looks great as does the x wing and POTC sets.

Posted by Markey in Belgium, 07 May 2011 16:05

Thanks for the info Hob, in the ad I saw today, it didn't mention any of the other sets.

Posted by brickzone in Ireland, 07 May 2011 16:34

Does anyone have any news as to whether like previous UK newspaper offers, this will be available with the Irish editions of the newspapers? And if so, where one collects the Lego? (e.g. Smyths Toys)

Of course not quite as good a deal here with the UK newspapers like so many other UK companies charging special "Irish" prices. (And no I don't mean just a bad £-€ exchange rate - we're talking sometimes multiples of the original price).

Posted by DrDaveWatford in United Kingdom, 07 May 2011 16:49

OK, so here we go again - now The Sun/NotW are getting in on the action, since their big rivals The Mirror have had so much success with these promotions.

Some neat sets on the list - looks like I'm a Sun reader (or at least buyer....) for a week !

Posted by LukeSkywalker in Ireland, 07 May 2011 16:50

@brickzone It'll probably be either Smyths or Tesco. Worst case scenario could be that you'd have to collect the tokens and send away for them, hope that doesn't happen though.

Posted by thesinisterpenguin in United Kingdom, 07 May 2011 16:54

@DrDaveWatford - Is it one set per day for one whole week?

Posted by atkinsar in United Kingdom, 07 May 2011 17:35

^ yep that's right, one per day starting Saturday the 14th.

Posted by thesinisterpenguin in United Kingdom, 07 May 2011 17:45

^ Sweet, thanks!

Posted by Pulpdiction in United Kingdom, 07 May 2011 18:08

Any chance of a mail order option do you think?

Posted by atkinsar in United Kingdom, 07 May 2011 18:21

^ almost certainly I'd say based on how they've been run previously. I've created a bricklist to keep all the sets together http://www.brickset.com/brickLists/?4963

Posted by AnseltheCat in United Kingdom, 07 May 2011 18:34

Oh, very nice, looking forward to getting these.

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 07 May 2011 20:43

WHY DOES BRITAIN ALWAYS GET THESE PROMOS?!?!?!?!

I swear, I have heard nothing of any kind of a promotion like this stateside. I'm not being ungrateful, just slightly outraged after 4+ Daily Mirrors and now this "News of the World" business.

Posted by Unknown User2596 in United States, 07 May 2011 22:35

What the glider set isn't coming to the US? BOOOOOO!!
This is just so unexpected. It even said so on the instructions...

Posted by Zordboy in Australia, 08 May 2011 01:40

Man, to get the Dragon Fight, Ninja Glider *and* the little Jack Sparrow, I would totally buy those newspapers!
Australia never gets cool stuff like this, sad face.

Posted by Pulpdiction in United Kingdom, 08 May 2011 04:29

@atkinsar - I hope so, but the other promotions were int he Mirror, not the Sun.

Posted by Rubber Mongoose in United Kingdom, 08 May 2011 10:38

Definitely getting the Ninjago ones!

Posted by mission_zed in United Kingdom, 09 May 2011 03:54

I can see myself picking up Captain Jack and the Ninjago sets. But the shame of buying the Sun and NotW. I'll have to bin them staightaway, cannot even take them to the office for re-cycling ... Anyone have a hampster which needs some bedding material ?

Of course, Jack's boat has to be the Sunday offer, so it will be more expensive. Bah humbug !

Posted by Delatron in United Kingdom, 09 May 2011 08:00

Oh dear, chuckles at the moralising - "Would love free/cheap/ hard to find Lego sets but can't possibly be seen with a smut and scandal filled tabloid rag!". What, did you think the Mirror was any better? Ideally they would give them away with something I actually buy, like bread or nappies, but hey, it's not the end of the world.

I personally will buy several copies each day I can get to either TRU and WH Smiths and get a full set by post too if that option is available, AND i'd happily let them hack my phone for it. Not that there's anything of interest for them to find on there, but it's the thought that counts right?

Posted by Andhe in United Kingdom, 09 May 2011 09:01

Woop, 'free' lego!

Also, just bought POTC Captains Cabin in Argos for £8.79, despite the catalogue saying £10.49??? One of the £20 sets (4181 or 4192) was also available at £16 something, though none of the other POTC sets were available yet. Weird, but I wasn't complaining.

Posted by Pulpdiction in United Kingdom, 11 May 2011 10:57

Moneysavingexpert.com are reporting no mail in option on these lego sets, collect on the day or miss out.

Posted by legoandmcflurrygod1628 in United Kingdom, 12 May 2011 06:08

can you collect the tokens (if they are any) and get them sent to you if not DEVD :(

Posted by jamzee44 in United Kingdom, 14 May 2011 03:06

I've just got the sun paper and there is no option to send away , it looks like collect only :( !

two more models coming AT-ST and a desert glider seen the sheets in WHSmiths. Also got 3 x wings so one per customer being ignored by my WHSmiths

Posted by Pulpdiction in United Kingdom, 14 May 2011 10:30

This was reported on MSE 3 days ago, as I posted above. Went to WH Smith and bought 2 papers, to get one each for my boys, they just handed them over with the paper, so went round the corner and sent the mrs back in with the tokens and got 2 more: Result!
