LEGO Collector 2nd edition: I now have it

  • LEGO Collector 2nd edition: I now have it

Posted by Huw, 07 Jul 2011 17:24. Filed under Book review.

The long-awaited second edition of this excellent book has just been published and I now have a copy. I'm not going to write a long review; instead I've ressurected my review of the first edition, as written in 2008, and will thus concentrate on the differences between the two editions.

    - At 928 pages, it's about 130 pages longer.
    - Edition 1 covered sets released in 1958 up to the first half of 2008. This new version starts at 1949 and goes right up to the end of 2011, including sets not yet released.
    - Errors noted in my 1st edition review have been corrected.
    - It comes with an exclusive keychain: a black 4x4 tile with 1 row of studs, printed with the classic space logo.
    - It has a blue brick on the front rather than a red one :-)

Suffice to say that this is a must-have for every LEGO collector, whether you have the first edition or not. It's a fantastic thing to browse through. Kudos to the team behind it for continuing to work on the project and keep it up-to-date.

At the moment it's only available from the German publishers via their website (click on the image to go there), but in time it will appear on Amazon worldwide like the first edition did, and maybe even turn up in LEGO brand stores.

Nice to see that review: The set page of the first edition had a link to an "Official Brickset review", but it didn't work. Now, it's back! :)

Does it have the Black Pearl in it?

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 07 Jul 2011 18:52

@dmm: Someone at Eurobricks posted an image of its "fact list": It's mentioned, but doesn't have an image.

Posted by Haltiamieli in Finland, 07 Jul 2011 18:53

dmm32552: Yes, but without a picture. cf. http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=53130&st=60

This is available on 'The Book Depository UK', certainly cheaper than the EUR$35 the publisher wants to charge for shipping to Australia. Do a search using the ISBN number 9783935976640.

Posted by AndreasL in Austria, 07 Jul 2011 19:40

I got the collector book too directly from the publisher. I am also very satisfied with it. Would like to get a hardcover version like the special edition one that was available of the 1st edition.

Huw, please add the book to the database.

Where all can this be purchased at?
28eur for the book and 29eur for shipping to the US from the German website

That is $82 USD.

I own the first edition and it was no where near that amount.

As mentioned above.. Here is the direct link though in USD.

USD$37.18 with free worldwide shipping..

Thanks Jad308, that's a sweet deal you found.

Hiya Redblurr, I think you must be looking at the US Book Depository site which doesn't show it as available.. Use the co.uk one in the posted link. It ships in 72hours apparently.. I've ordered 2. Also you can make use of the ReferAFriend offer and score a 10% discount voucher as well.

Is it in German or English?

Posted by redblurr in United States, 07 Jul 2011 21:42

should be in both German and English.
Jad, Thanks! didn't realize my browser was redirecting me to the .com site LOL

Im curious what was added prior to 1958 because i thought that was the beginning of the plastic bricks of lego but thats off the top of my head i may not be remembering right. Im a little bummed that this book duplicates all the stuff in the first book because it kind of makes having the first book pointless. Oh well, thanks for the news.

Nice!....I got it too....excellente....just need to wait for delivery.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 08 Jul 2011 06:26

^^ It wouln't really make sense to issue a book that covers just pre 1958 and 2008+, would it?

Posted by atkinsar in United Kingdom, 08 Jul 2011 07:22

I didn't get the 1st edition, but I've got this one, and I'm loving it. I like just randomly flicking to pages and checking out some sets I've never seen before.

That reminds me @Huw, when is 'Brickset: The Book' coming out?

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 08 Jul 2011 08:53

Regardless of how good it is, I don't want to get a book like this that's going to be outdated in 6 months.

EDIT: @atkinsar, are you for real? :D

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 08 Jul 2011 09:54

^ Surely on that basis you'd never buy any non-fiction book, then? Even books about dinosaurs, for example, go out of date as more is discovered :)

^^^ I've added them to the database now.

Posted by sharky in United States, 08 Jul 2011 10:09

@Jad308: Wow, thanks for that tip. I would have never known about it otherwise. I had already convinced myself I wasn't going to get it due to the high shipping cost. I can't tell you how delighted I am to be able to get it now. You are my hero. :-)

Posted by atkinsar in United Kingdom, 08 Jul 2011 13:24

^^^^ Sadly not, but maybe I've just inspired Huw to create one (and maybe not)!

Posted by lego_nutt in United Kingdom, 08 Jul 2011 16:12

i wasn't convinced to buy this, but i decided "why not"...i thought it would make a great reference guide...shame about shipping costs. Also, Northern Ireland, much to contrary belief is part of the UK, but according to their website its not, so i had to use Ireland as my address - not sure if this has worked out more expensive or not, but all said and done, i am looking forward to my copy arriving :o)

Posted by Zackula in United States, 08 Jul 2011 17:25

I would love to buy this book, but I'm going to save my limited income for real lego.

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 08 Jul 2011 23:14

^^^^^^ (@Huw) - That's not what I meant really. I mean Lego constantly brings out new sets, as everyone here obviously knows. Not to be a kiss-up, but Brickset is my LEGO Collector's Book.

...I guess I was sort of blunt with that comment, huh? :(

P.S. I'm sure you were just joking a bit anyways, :)

Posted by Thomson & Thompson in Canada, 09 Jul 2011 12:08

^^ Same here. Can't wait for the review!

Posted by Zackula in United States, 09 Jul 2011 18:50

^Someone else probably will.

Posted by Thomson & Thompson in Canada, 10 Jul 2011 03:36

@LEGOlas1-Sorry about that. Misread the caption.

Huw, the link to LEGO Shop.com has vanished. Where did it go?

Posted by voypro in United States, 10 Jul 2011 10:42

@Huw
Wow book must be great , no postings from you recently. Must be engrossed in its pages.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 10 Jul 2011 10:56

No, just a quiet week...

Posted by jcilkmfoster in Hungary, 10 Jul 2011 12:28

Saw it at Legoland, Germany this past week. Price: 27.99€.

Posted by Si_Dorking_Surrey in United Kingdom, 12 Jul 2011 03:00

Whats the RRP of the book, e.g. the price printed on the cover?

Posted by MvdS in Netherlands, 13 Jul 2011 12:54

Received it today.

Took a quick look and saw that set:

20020
BrickMaster - Ninjago
Ninjago
83 pieces
BrickMaster exclusive set.

is missing.

Want my money back.

There is no price on the cover.

Ordered my copy from book Depository.co.uk last Friday, cost me £20.41 inc postage.
It arrived today (p.s. noticed tht Book Depository now charge £28 for it)
Very impressed with it, indeed I just can't put it down....

Thanks for the review, Huw, it was what you wrote that convinced me to get it, just got to work on the wife now in order to purchase the Minifig book :-)

If you have this book take a look at pages 279 through 284 - the text refers to the wrong pictures - 43 incorrect entries!
