DC and Marvel sets coming next year

  • DC and Marvel sets coming next year

Posted by Huw, 20 Jul 2011 02:55. Filed under Miscellaneous.

Exciting news broke overnight on the Variety website, on the eve of ComicCon: LEGO and Warner Brothers have expanded their relationship giving LEGO access to the complete DC Comics character collection including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and villains the Joker, Bane, Harley Quinn and Lex Luthor.

I know that this will be very welcome news for many of you who perhaps missed out on Batman first time around.

Although the first wave of sets is not due out until next January, expect to see the first pictures of them once ComicCon gets underway. Unfortunately none of Brickset's staff will be there but Ace from FBTB will be, so keep an eye out for the sets over there.

Update 1: Check out http://www.legosuperheroes.com/ for pictures of Superman, Batman and the Green Lantern!

Update 2: (I can't keep up with this!) Now it seems LEGO has a Marvel licence as well!

Update 3: DC and Marvel minifig pictures now on flickr: Check out Wolverine, Iron Man, The Hulk, Wonder Woman and more!

Update 4: Buildable super-heroes (like Ben10) at Eurobricks.

Keep an eye out at FBTB for more.

Nice, can't wait

Posted by Hellwing in France, 20 Jul 2011 03:16

I would prefer Marvel, with X-Men minifigures :D

Posted by fff in Spain, 20 Jul 2011 03:37

Dont complain ;-) maybe next time :-)

Posted by ApolloVI in United States, 20 Jul 2011 03:39

YES!!! This basically confirms that we'll see some 'The Dark Knight Rises' sets! And a Superman line isn't too far off either, I would expect, considering we're getting a Superman movie next year too :-D

Posted by Dood in Australia, 20 Jul 2011 03:57

Hope this also means a Lego DC game, espically since Travels Tales is hiring new modelers.

Posted by gime in Poland, 20 Jul 2011 04:23

Wow! It's gonna be huge! Can't wait to see.

Posted by bodybomb3 in United Kingdom, 20 Jul 2011 04:25

This is incredible, my favourite theme, and proven to be tone of the most popular themes ever, is coming back. I remember me and my friends would dream of getting the tumbler or the bat-cave after they'd been discontinued. I believe this is one of the best moves Lego has made since bringing back star wars. It was maybe for many the best theme ever and to see its return, that expands through the whole DC universe, will be a dream come true. Although this will mean Lego can put the prices up ALOT so true fans will be forced to hand out more than they should. Prices aside I'm definitely collecting the whole series.

Posted by CharlieTheFunEngine in Australia, 20 Jul 2011 04:46

YES!!!

Posted by Andhe in United Kingdom, 20 Jul 2011 04:48

Cue the collective groan from those who had hoped to sell their old batman sets/figures for extortionate amounts on ebay...

Exciting news!!

Posted by grandbuilder2001 in United Kingdom, 20 Jul 2011 04:53

I can't wait for this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by ensign_dave in United Kingdom, 20 Jul 2011 05:06

WOOHOO! This'll be a MASSIVE hit. Hope the playability will be like the previous quality Batman sets and not like the poor playability of the old Spiderman sets. Again it looks like LEGO have listened to the public!
Downside is that as per usual the prices will be extortionate!

Posted by aquafreak125 in United Kingdom, 20 Jul 2011 05:30

WOOT DARK KNIGHT RISING SETS!!

Posted by max villano in Greece, 20 Jul 2011 05:31

I shrieked with delight when I heard this!!!!!

Posted by ob1 in United Kingdom, 20 Jul 2011 05:51

Can't wait to see the sets. I have the original batmobile set, and kick myself regularly for not getting more, esp the tumbler.

Posted by that random guy in United Kingdom, 20 Jul 2011 06:00

I WANT MARVEL!!!!

Posted by bob123 in United States, 20 Jul 2011 06:06

FANTASITiC!!!
Might have to readjust my lego budget for the year.

Posted by bmwlego in United States, 20 Jul 2011 07:31

Oh my gawd! Yes! This is the best LEGO news I've heard in ages regarding new themes. This will certainly be a theme I pick up multiple copies of so I can build with 1 and add the figs to a display case from the duplicate set!

Posted by kartoffelviking in Australia, 20 Jul 2011 07:33

I want to pee my pants!

Does anyone know the significance of the date (18 July) at http://www.legosuperheroes.com ? Was that the date the site went up (seems a bit odd) or was it supposed to be properly launched then?

Posted by ncbarrett in United States, 20 Jul 2011 07:59

So we can expect to see these at TRU in December.

Posted by bluelion3 in United States, 20 Jul 2011 08:07

I'm still waiting for "April Fools"... Glad I waited to get a Batman minifig. This is nice, but I would prefer Marvel as well simply because I know their characters better.

Posted by LukeSkywalker in Ireland, 20 Jul 2011 08:24

I've died and gone to heaven...

Posted by Gregorovich in United Kingdom, 20 Jul 2011 08:27

This is brilliant news! I only got one Batman set, so I only got a few of the figs. I can tell this theme will be amazing.

When is the Comic-Con? Because I just can't wait!

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 20 Jul 2011 08:35

My LEGO Message Boards friends will go MAD when they find out... :)

Posted by unleashed in United States, 20 Jul 2011 08:42

Yay! I never was able to get the batman sets, but now i can and i could get other dc sets also! awesome!

Posted by ncbarrett in United States, 20 Jul 2011 08:48

ComicCon starts tomorrow(preview tonight)
Sold out though.

Posted by vwong19 in United States, 20 Jul 2011 08:57

Lego budgets? What's that?

Posted by Bricknave in United States, 20 Jul 2011 09:03

I think LEGO and Warner Brothers have made an excellent decision in making this partnership, especially since DC's popularity is on the rise.

Green Lantern is one of my favorite super heroes because of his imagination-based power.
Hopefully there will be a Green Lantern bucket filled with basic bricks in transparent green, so fans could make LEGO light-constructs! :-)

Posted by Zacherano in United States, 20 Jul 2011 09:04

This sounds awesome! I was hoping for another Joker minifigure....

Posted by sharky in United States, 20 Jul 2011 09:08

Better sell your old Batman sets now. I have a feeling the prices of the old sets will drop when the new Batman sets come out.

Posted by voypro in United States, 20 Jul 2011 09:49

Y E S !!!!!!!

Bar none, the biggest Lego new is a very long time.

Posted by vamproe in United States, 20 Jul 2011 09:51

OMG....

this is awesome news........
green lantern......batman.....superman...... DC goodness.......

my wallet cries !

glad I've decided to get rid of my star wars lego's.........

happ happy joy joy

Posted by PaulRevere in United States, 20 Jul 2011 10:15

I'm trying to imagine what sets we'll see for the gang.

Wonderwoman with jet I'd bet; Superman and Green Lantern sets are a mystery; Batman may be re-imagination of the old 2006 lines.

And maybe down the road, we'll see Aquaman, Hawkeye, Flash...Shazam would be sweet!

Posted by kenhew in Malaysia, 20 Jul 2011 10:18

Wow, lucky I didn't give in to those insanely jacked up prices of Batman sets...a year I definitely can wait and I don't think LEGO will go wrong with this, maybe prices might be lousy per piece count as with all licensed theme...but it definitely won't be as bad those Batman and Spiderman sets now on bricklink or ebay that's for sure!

Posted by vamproe in United States, 20 Jul 2011 10:21

maybe a classic batman line....an old school looking batmobile
a green lantern jet in all translucent green.
maybe a hall of justice, a hall of doom !
oh........ young justice line, teen titans....the possibilities are endless

again my wallet cries.......

Posted by PaulRevere in United States, 20 Jul 2011 10:22

If the new Batman sets and figs are completely different, you may not see as big of a drop with the old Batman sets as one may think. The reason they are so expensive is because of the low supply / high demand equation.

And there's no guarantee demand will drop for the old stuff. Just sayin'.

Posted by macmon in Philippines, 20 Jul 2011 10:41

This is nice! Again another set of wish lists! Wonder woman would be a New one and definitely nice to get all minifigs.

Posted by marcus880 in United Kingdom, 20 Jul 2011 10:44

This is great! Im glad that they carried this on , batman was fantastic!
(Im glad they went with this over Marvel scream all you like fan boys I prefer D.C :P)

Posted by crosbysakic8719 in United States, 20 Jul 2011 10:46

O YA hopefully the make a flash figure and a green arrow cuz that would rule!!!

Posted by vwong19 in United States, 20 Jul 2011 10:47

Demand for the old Batman sets at their current Bricklink/Ebay prices will definitely go down as people now know new Batman sets will soon be available. But instead of 10x for the old sets, they might go for x5 and could continue to drop as Lego reveals more images of sets to come. Supply for the old sets may even go up as people might decide to cash in now before the market becomes saturated with the new sets. I think many people are just happy to have a Batman and Joker regardless of the design.

Posted by PaulRevere in United States, 20 Jul 2011 10:52

The additional villians list for the Justice League has so many possibilities. I swear you could do a Collectible Minifigure Series alone on them.

Posted by bionicle212 in United States, 20 Jul 2011 10:56

awesome! I missed out on the old batman sets, it would be so cool to see the dark knight rises sets! -crap, I just spent all my money on star wars sets.,

Posted by ncbarrett in United States, 20 Jul 2011 10:58

the site is live
shows batman, green lantern and superman figures.

http://www.legosuperheroes.com/

Posted by homoludens in Germany, 20 Jul 2011 11:00

I am not convinced that this means we will see old Batman sets at reduced prices at bricklink - actually I believe it's just the other way around. Lego superheroes is going to attract a number of new collectors and will also fuel the desire for the old sets with people who missed out last time - you know the"gotta-have-it-all" mentality ;)
I'm sure we'll see some 7783 Batcaves over 500 GBP this Christmas season on ebay...when "gotta-have-it-all" meets "can't-wait-to-get-it" :)

Posted by vwong19 in United States, 20 Jul 2011 11:10

According to the new website
http://www.legosuperheroes.com/

there will be a DC Universe Batcave next year, mentioned as one of the a 3rd Prizes.

Posted by bionicle212 in United States, 20 Jul 2011 11:13

@ncbarrett - those minifigs look so cool! (I've gonna have to get a batman.) @homoludens - who the heck would sell their batman sets?

Posted by WhovianTrekker in United States, 20 Jul 2011 11:13

Great, now for lego to sign with Star Trek for their new films...

Posted by PaulRevere in United States, 20 Jul 2011 11:13

Batcave is a standard - excellent!

Maybe later on they'll do a "Halls of Justice Headquarters" - you know that's comin' too.

Posted by Ultimate Brickmaster in Ireland, 20 Jul 2011 11:23

I'm hoping we finally get a batpod (from The Dark Knight) and a Jim Gordon =D. This is great news, Superman and Green Lantern are a welcome addition!!!

That's what the figs look like.

Posted by Steve_J_OM in Ireland, 20 Jul 2011 11:59

Best....news....EVER!!!

I've always been gutted about having missed the entire Batman theme, though I was quietly optimistic it'd be resurrected for The Dark Knight Rises. This is seriously exciting.

Posted by The Reviewer in United States, 20 Jul 2011 12:05

I have all the batman sets except the Harley quinn one.I Hope they re-release that one.either way I hope we get some new batman vilian minifigs from the video game like:Man-bat,mad hatter, etc

Posted by erbse2000 in Germany, 20 Jul 2011 12:09

The figures look great!

As mentioned several times before: it'll be interesting to see the price change on ebay and bricklink for the previous sets...

Posted by TooMuchLEGO in United States, 20 Jul 2011 12:14

erbse2000: Probably go up even more, they'll claim its "vintage Batman" or something stupid. :P

Posted by bmwlego in United States, 20 Jul 2011 12:28

I would love to see a Commissioner Gordon from the video game.

Posted by Benzo in Canada, 20 Jul 2011 12:32

this maybe a LEGO theme I will have to 100% complete!! :D

Posted by LukeSkywalker in Ireland, 20 Jul 2011 12:44

The figures look so good, I only wish Green Lantern had a new hairpiece, never really liked that hair for some reason, probably because it just reminds me of Mutt Williams, lol.

Posted by Thomson & Thompson in Canada, 20 Jul 2011 12:56

Superman and Green Lantern look so cool. Can't wait for the sets!

Posted by ncbarrett in United States, 20 Jul 2011 13:05

they got Marvel too!

Posted by Gregorovich in United Kingdom, 20 Jul 2011 13:13

To be honest, I'm not too much a fan of Superman's hairpiece. However, Green Lantern and Batman's suits are beautiful, I especially love the green. I hope we get a black green lantern like in the League game, but I'm doubtful. The white one is good enough for now, though.

I also hope we get all the females, like Zatana, Catwoman and Poison Ivy because im sure with today's outstanding variety of parts they could make gorgeous minifigures.

I can't wait to see the rest, be sure to post plenty pics if you are going!

Thanks very much for the news, everyone!

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 20 Jul 2011 14:07

Hm, will the combined awesomeness of all the LEGO superhero sets bring to the end of the world?... :P

Posted by PaulRevere in United States, 20 Jul 2011 14:15

@alemas - Yes, but only if they also announce a LOTR collaboration.

Posted by vamproe in United States, 20 Jul 2011 14:20

We can now create Amalgam characters.....
darkclaw.....mix of batman and wolverine

Bruce Wayne agent of shield

These were from a great comic series that was done by DC and Marvel together.

I'm not going to buy many more legos this year, until these come out.
1) city advent calander
2) holiday post office

other than that saving my funds for last 2011 early 2012

Posted by ncbarrett in United States, 20 Jul 2011 14:23

@PaulRevere Isn't Hobbit coming out next year?

just sayin' the end of the world could be closer than you think ;)

Well if you look at the http://www.legosuperheroes.com website they reveal one of the new sets as a prize:

DC Universe Batcave set

I'm sure they'll be some fantasict figs! :)

Posted by legofanatic2414 in United States, 20 Jul 2011 14:39

This is amazing! All these years us AFOLs have been making custom Superman and Iron Man minifigures but now, LEGO will finally make the actual sets! I simply cannot wait!

Posted by PaulRevere in United States, 20 Jul 2011 14:42

@alemas - Good grief 2x. There are 2 LOTR prequels, Hobbit and part 2 in 2013.

Posted by Gregorovich in United Kingdom, 20 Jul 2011 14:56

I found this on Eurobricks -

"The LEGO SUPER HEROES Marvel collection will spotlight three Marvel franchises – Marvel's The Avengers movie, and X-Men and Spider-Man classic characters.

LEGO minifigure form:
- Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Hawkeye, Loki and Black Widow
- Wolverine, Magneto, Nick Fury and Deadpool
- Spider-Man, and Doctor Octopus.

The new LEGO DC Universe SUPER HEROES collection will feature 13 iconic super heroes in LEGO minifigure form, including:
- Batman™, Robin™, Catwoman™, The Joker, The Riddler™, Two-Face, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn™, Bane, Bruce Wayne, Superman™, Lex Luthor™ and Wonder Woman™. "

Don't know if this has been posted. I hope it hasn't!

Personally, I think it's great that there's 4 new female DC minifigures, plus plenty of other villains I love. The Marvel figs don't interest me as much, but they still sound good. I'm unfamiliar with the Avengers, so could someone tell me if Black Widow is a female?

And I wonder how they'll do the Hulk..?

Posted by ncbarrett in United States, 20 Jul 2011 14:58

I'd like to see fantastic four, probably wont happen though.

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 20 Jul 2011 15:00

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 20 Jul 2011 15:01

@Gregorovich: It's official. :P The world will end next year. :P Too much awesomeness. :P

Posted by ncbarrett in United States, 20 Jul 2011 15:08

@Gregorovich yes Black Widow is female, she was in Iron Man 2 last year

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 20 Jul 2011 15:08

@PaulRevere: Just had a look at the list. WOW. :P LEGO has endless possibilites! :D

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 20 Jul 2011 15:17

So. It looks like LEGO has listened to our pleas for a LEGO DC Comics/Marvel theme. If we managed to get that... how about LEGO Doctor Who?... :D

Posted by PaulRevere in United States, 20 Jul 2011 15:19

@Gregorovich - thanks for the update! Fantastic to get some additional details.

With all the figs they are creating, I am wondering how many sets they'll release.

A) They could go a Ninajo route and sell some figs individually with stands; plus have sets with figs, or

B) Go the same traditional route of 50 to 1,000 pcs sets with figs like all other series.

So much joy. The combination of my two favorite things... comic universe and LEGO.

I seriously could care less to how much these sets will cost. I will buy no matter what. You got me LEGO.... I give up. Paycheck will go directly to LEGO.

At San Diego Comic-Con, 3,000 exclusive Batman and Green Lantern LEGO minifigures will be distributed to kick off a promotion that will take place from August to December in advance of the launch.

I just found this info posted else where

Posted by kenhew in Malaysia, 20 Jul 2011 15:54

@Gregorovich man I already feel broke after reading your post...already sets are getting more expensive what more licensed sets what more it's DC+Marvel licensed sets and what more this many in the line-up! Oh have mercy on us mere average income earners who're not living in the US please LEGO!

Posted by Jon_Brick in Canada, 20 Jul 2011 16:02

@Gregorovich
DEADPOOL, really, that is to awesome I haven't been this happy about lego since the started the SW theme!

Posted by Gregorovich in United Kingdom, 20 Jul 2011 16:05

Thanks for letting me know that Black Widow is the woman who appeared in Iron Man. I hope they base the figure off of Scarlett Johannson, because it would be great to have her as a minifig.

Posted by PaulRevere in United States, 20 Jul 2011 16:08

This is sounding more and more like a decade+ worth of themed sets (aka Star Wars 1999 to present).

And for TLG to launch in 2012, and miss Xmas 2011 is interesting to ponder as well.

Posted by ncbarrett in United States, 20 Jul 2011 16:08

I have been a massive DC/Marvel fan since I could read because my Dad has over 5000 comics of DC/Marvel. I am not so sure the figures built like Buzz and Zurg will be popular with marvel fans, but in think I will make the Iron Man into a mech for the Iron Man figure.

@Doctor Leg O'Brick
I can see an Iron Man Technic figure coming, much like R2D2, C3PO, Vader, and company.

True or false: Superman's head is the perfect alternative to all of the CW series clone troopers. True. The eyes on "Supe" are roughly a million times better than the clones' eyes. And false: it would cost roughly a million times more to replace a bunch of minifigure clones' heads.

@Unknown User2596 - You've got me. That's exatly what's going through my head right now!

You know, all these new themes that TLG is coming out with are troubling me. TLG is moving away from older themes like Castle or Space and going into new, liscensed themes like PoTC and this one right here. They should stay with a few of these themes like Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Super Heroes, and lose the "come out with 5 new liscensed themes every year" kind of thinking, and bring back e.g. Classic Space kind of sets. But, TLG needs new material every year, and if that material makes us FOL's happy, then just keep doing what you are doing, LEGO.

Also, please bring along a Tintin theme, LEGO. Please!

Posted by Ultimate Brickmaster in Ireland, 20 Jul 2011 17:25

QUESTION: any idea these will be sets? or will they sold like the minifigures series?

Posted by Jon_Brick in Canada, 20 Jul 2011 17:27

I know most people might not agree but I hope TLG gets a deal Star Trek, I really like the newest movie even though I HATED the franchise before, I think it would be neat. Also it would be cool if TLG explored the Star Wars EU since they seem to be going beyond the Marvel and DC movie universes.

Posted by EdwinJackson in Norway, 20 Jul 2011 17:32

Please, Traveler Tales, make a Lego DC Heroes game.

BTW: It was about time Superman becomes a Minifig. I have seen so many good fan made SM figures, and i always wanted Lego to make an official one.

Posted by johnnyvgoode in Guatemala, 20 Jul 2011 17:34

After these, the only things left in my wish list for Lego to do could be historical characters (Einstein, Chaplin, etc.), BTTF (though highly unlikely), but oh, I just want minifigure versions of all cool characters in blockbuster movies! They've got me with the minifig!

Posted by Gregorovich in United Kingdom, 20 Jul 2011 17:37

@Ultimate Brickster: I'm quite sure there will be sets. Why get such a huge licence, and not use it to it's full potential? I mean they are a building toy company, not an action figure one.

I certainly hope that there's building in it...

Posted by Brendan in United States, 20 Jul 2011 17:43

I just had a geekasm...HOLY WORLDS COLLIDING BATMAN!!!!! Cant even begin to say how awesome this and EPIC this is!....Thank you Lego for getting it right!

Posted by Brendan in United States, 20 Jul 2011 17:45

This comment is from the story...I am pretty sure it means sets and vehicles

"This partnership gives builders a chance to recreate the characters, vehicles and worlds of some of the most iconic super heroes, so they can relive the action and even customize it, a proven and winning formula in Lego construction," said Jill Wilfert, VP, licensing and entertainment for the Lego Group."

Posted by Ultimate Brickmaster in Ireland, 20 Jul 2011 17:46

@Gregorovich: I hope these turn out to be building sets too, sure its more money but i'd prefer better quality minifigures (in terms of plastic) than the series minfigure get.

Posted by Skywalker1966 in United States, 20 Jul 2011 18:02

I see a very bright future for LEGO here. These let you build the world of your favorite hero without needing to buy cheap, chinese action figures. Who, here, thinks that Spider-Man will make another appearance? Again, I have no doubt of the success of this. I also happen to know some little kids who will be very happy about this (little brother's friends).

Posted by Obi-wan Legobi in United States, 20 Jul 2011 18:15

@ Blockman
I agree. It's very smart for Lego to have a "super heroes" theme rather than just a "Batman" or a "Spiderman" theme so they can have many different Marvel and DC heroes. And yes, I have no doubt that Spiderman will make another appearance, especially because of the new Spiderman movie coming out next year.

Posted by Gregorovich in United Kingdom, 20 Jul 2011 18:35

Don't mean to be impatient, but when is this comic con starting? I just can't wait to see some pictures!

Posted by Ypres in Canada, 20 Jul 2011 18:37

DC and Marvel... I never thought that was even possible at the same time! LOL! Whatever at least both host companies know that Lego is the best toy brand to market their product we agree on something.

I don't read comics but I love the latest movies... feels like I'm some girl with a crush! ROFL!

LEGO!!! I'm too happy!!!

Posted by legofanatic2414 in United States, 20 Jul 2011 18:40

I want a Doctor Octopus very badly....the arms on the original were fantastic! Also, if they make a Venom minifigure and redesign Joker to be more dark, I will have all 3 of my favorite villains!
PS. Who knows if Hulk will be a mold and not a minifigure? Taking into consideration his size.

Posted by Gregorovich in United Kingdom, 20 Jul 2011 18:53

Just to let you know, Eurobricks have pictures of some of the figures!

Most of them are still prototypes (or atleast I hope they are...). I love the new Poison Ivy and Thor, but some of them look quite horrid. Catwoman's mask looks too big, and WonderWoman's tiara is oversized IMO. I certainly hope there's some changes when these are released...

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 20 Jul 2011 18:57

@Gregorovich: AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!! :P *Rushes to Eurobricks* :P

I'm so happy :)

Posted by duilim in Australia, 20 Jul 2011 19:20

I don't know how to feel. My initialy reaction was complete joy.... I mean, think about it..... Batman, Superman, Green Lantern plus the Marvel Characters in Spiderman, Hulk, X-Men, Iron Man, Thor..... the list goes on and on.... only thing is..... how expensive is it going to be to collect the lot??? Thinking about the impact on the family budget sends a shiver down my spine...

Overall though..... yay!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Ultimate Brickmaster in Ireland, 20 Jul 2011 19:49

Pictures are up on eurobricks of some the figures, i have to say I'm very disappointed with the joker and iron man figs. The batman figure is different form the one in the picture i hope they sell both.

I'm heavily hoping for LOBO

MARVEL?!?! YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I apologize, needed to get that outta my system. :P

Posted by MCNwakeboard in United Kingdom, 20 Jul 2011 20:02

Keep in mind that the Jack Sparrow figure changed from comic con 2010 to the final figure, so I am guessing the IRONMAN mask will improve. The rest of the figures look pretty good, though I was thinking joker would have different hair

I can't believe how happy I am about this. I think I'm a 10 year old trapped in the body of an adult. :) They say you don't stop playing when you get old, you get old when you stop playing. I can't wait to see pictures of the sets.

X-Men freaking LEGO. SWEET!!!!!! Oh, and The Avengers & DC stuff is pretty cool too.
Only news that would ever top this (and hopefully will) would be a Hobbit & LOTR announcement next year!

There goes $2000 out of my wallet next year! PLEASE Lego, give us PAINTED pieces in these sets!

fantastic news! But I wonder why has not his helmet CAP.AMERICA!? I hate Minifigs with bare head! CAP in film and in comics has a "Helmet" must also put the minifig is not bad! : (

Posted by Thomson & Thompson in Canada, 20 Jul 2011 20:38

@MCNwakeboard-Great pics. Thor and Captain America look awesome. I wonder how the Hulk will evolve.

@TooMuchLEGO-That's a good joke! (If you don't belive in 2012...)

Posted by Neminchio in Italy, 20 Jul 2011 20:39

like the old Spider-Man, was horrible with the bare head

Posted by TooMuchLEGO in United States, 20 Jul 2011 20:48

@Thomson & Thompson: Thanks. It's a joke, I think that the world ending in 2012 is equal to a chance of me becoming president next year.

@jamesster: Yeah! Bring on the Avengers baby! :P

You know, come to think of it, TT Games could easily make a LEGO DC Comics vs. Marvel fighting game... :D

Update: Oh wait, it's Vs. CAPCOM, not Vs. Marvel... dang it :(

I love them...they are all great cant wait to spend my kids college fund on them!

Posted by Ypres in Canada, 20 Jul 2011 23:13

Well I'm thinking any problems with the minifigs will likely be fixed. I like how some say that they hate bare heads while others call the Iron Man helmet too bulky. See the problem yet?

Only the sets at this point will grab my attention since I can still smell the tag on the figs reading "subject to complete change".

Having only got a couple of the old Batman and Spiderman sets, I'm really excited about this!!
I hope the four X-men characters listed are just the start of the series and that more will be added over time - we need Professor X, cyclops, Storm, Mystique and the beast, to name but a few!

Posted by Dlakii in Australia, 21 Jul 2011 04:37

...
in my dream i am the AFOL. its me
and THEN the big toymaker comes for a little one-on-one
but it turns out to be CRAZY what kind of dual-licence this guy has
im telling you.... both mavrel and dc like this is UNREAL, it doesnt even HAPPEN most of the time
the comiccorn is on FIRE
dude come get the rule check this out

That's pretty much the only response I can get out now that adequately covers what I'm getting here. This is just /whoa/. Even if there's precedent for one simultaneously holding DC and Marvel licences... yessssssssssssssss. The minifigs generally look great, though some (Iron Man, Hulk, Wolverine) could do with alteration and refinement.

If only they'd do Batman from the "Adam West" days. The cartoon like characters would be perfect for Lego and as for the original and best Batmobile and Bat Copter and Bat Boat......just imagine !!!!

Posted by bluelion3 in United States, 21 Jul 2011 08:15

I really didn't believe they had the Marvel license until I saw the photos from the Comic-con. It really smelled like a hoax. (Although I've seen better sticker jobs on custom minifigs on eBay than on the Marvel figs at Comic-con. That Captain America looks like a 5 year old has been playing with him for a few weeks!)

It's hard to believe LEGO picked up two licenses that compete so directly against each other, and now their characters are standing right next to each other in the displays. I expected either DC or Marvel to have a clause in the licensing contract that says you can't also have the license for the other company.

It actually seems like LEGO listened to what a lot of people have been requesting, and they delivered!

A Collectible Minifigure set of superheros would be perfect, but we'll probably have to buy $99 sets to get some specific characters. Any speculation on sets we'll see other than the Batcave? X-Men Danger Room perhaps? Professor Xavier's School? Sentinels? Iron Man's workshop?

Are the Batman, Joker, and Catwoman minifigs from the Comic-con display the same as the old ones? Will we really get Batman's blue mask re-released?

Posted by ncbarrett in United States, 21 Jul 2011 08:30

I think DC and Marvel thought LEGO would make them lots of money.
It appears they will be.
My guess this has been in the works for some time, and when Disney bought Marvel it might have helped LEGO.

Posted by Diodrama in United Kingdom, 21 Jul 2011 09:30

If you look closely at Catwoman, Batman and Joker they are all different to previous versions. Obviously these are just prototypes and presumably it would be cheaper for Lego to reuse the old paint jobs, but hopefully they will all be different in some way. Reissues are good news for new collectors on a budget, but kind of a kick in the teeth to long standing collectors and fans who bought all the sets last time round to get a full set.

LEGO Captain America... I can't think of much anything cooler.

@Obi-wan Legobi: Yeah, it would be cool to have Spider-Man again. The only one I ever got was Doc Ock's Hideout and, while it was sort of cool and I have used the windows in tons of MOCs, It did not really have much playability. Let's just hope they have better value for play. I just remembered to send this to one of my friends who loves LEGO and superheroes. He is going to burst. ; )

Anyway, I will certainly be looking for one of those Green Lanterns.

Posted by Zacherano in United States, 21 Jul 2011 13:51

@Blockman - Wow! I'm a Spider-Man fan, but I missed out on the Spider-Man 2 sets, and one of my wanted sets used to be Doc Ock's Hideout, because of the figures and pieces! I'm surprised to hear it's not really an exciting set. If you don't want it, I'm happy to take it off your hands for a trade. :-D

the prices for the exclusive batman and green lantern are sky rocketing right now....
a set is at over 150$.

just the green lantern's are going for 80$ plus

but limited to 1500 each and you have to win a raffle to get the chance to get one at SDCC.

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 21 Jul 2011 16:30

@bionicle212, why would you hope that? Did you even GET the original ones?

Posted by ytjedi in United States, 21 Jul 2011 16:39

I'm not worried about the cost of the exclusive figs getting passed out at SDCC. For those that want to get it carded, ya, you'll have to shuffle out the dough, but if you're just going for the figure I have no doubt that next year when Dark Knight Rises comes out we'll get a Batman just like that one or over the course of the multi-year license that LEGO got we'll get a Green Lantern fig in some set. The patience is definitely worth it to me instead of paying $150 just to get two minifigs right now.

Posted by vamproe in United States, 21 Jul 2011 16:47

@ ytjedi I agree....but to those who have to "get them all"
I'm lucky a friend of mine emailed me that he got a green lantern for me.

@jonbuddy, I was never a fan of harry potter, wizards and spells never appealed to me, and the sets did'nt either.
and is'nt the deathly hallows 2 the last movie? without a movie to back it up, it will probaly die down.

Posted by ytjedi in United States, 21 Jul 2011 18:41

I think the Harry Potter line is done. Not because it was bad or anything, there's just nothing for it to ride on anymore. Not like how Star Wars has Clone Wars and with almost each new episode there's a new character or ship that I see thinking "I wonder when that LEGO set is coming out".

There is the LEGO Harry Potter Years 5-7 coming out later this year though, so maybe we'll get to see a few more. Maybe a few more things from OotP; We got almost nothing when that movie came out. We need a non-Azkaban Sirius Black minifig!

Posted by Gregorovich in United Kingdom, 21 Jul 2011 18:57

So let me get this straight; the Comic Con won't show the actual sets, it's only giving us a preview of the minifigs?

If that's the case, then I suppose it's good enough. We don't usually get this much info plus some pics until much later.

Posted by spency13 in United States, 21 Jul 2011 19:01

@ytjedi, I completly agree!!! I do believe it is ending, which is sad (I just want more after seeing the epic finale!!!!!) but all good things must come to an end and they ended on a high note. But, you're right; we might get a few sets when the videogame comes out, or at least an exclusive, pre-order minifigure.

Posted by legogirl19 in United States, 21 Jul 2011 19:07

I almost jumped out of my seat when I read yesterday that Lego, Marvel and DC were teaming up.

Like most I missed out on the first release of Batman and Spider-man series, during my dark ages! My boys love Batman and Lego, but I was not about to shell out the $$$ for those retired sets!

The images of the new minifigs are incredible and I am even that much more excited! Come on 2012!!!!!

Posted by johnnyvgoode in Guatemala, 21 Jul 2011 20:07

@legogirl19 I'm pretty sure you will have lost nothing, compared to the people who are going to be in their dark ages on 2012!

Posted by legomatt in United Kingdom, 21 Jul 2011 20:24

People shelling out silly money for those free-giveaway preview figs are being a bit daft (if they remove the fig). As it clearly states that the figs are not actually limited edition of themselves (just limited in free giveaway numbers) - it's a pre-release of a fig that will be in general circulation next year. So if you just want the fig (and don't care about the provenance) just wait.

Finally.....thats all I got to say. I`m getting tired with all these New Themes Lego has been trying to impress me with, No offense, but Ninjago, Atlantis, and Pharaoh`s Quest didnt get my attention at all. Its time for a change and thats exactly Lego did, got this contract with DC and Marvel. I think this is going to be the best theme and most wanted for a long time. But will this be a Collectable kinda thing, like with the Collectable Minifigures Series or will there be sets, I cant really think of any ideas that they could use to make sets with, except maybe with batman and spiderman. If you have any ideas of sets for these put em down below, I really want to see the possiblites Lego could use.

Eh, I had enough when we had Batman, I actually bought sets. I'm really not topo thrilled with LEGO at all anymore, they keep doing things like this.

I was never a really big DC or Marvel fan, so this isn't too exciting. I'll probably not buy any of these unless I really like them.

Posted by bionicle212 in United States, 22 Jul 2011 11:27

@TBOC - you're going into your "dark ages".

Posted by vamproe in United States, 22 Jul 2011 12:12

@JDLego

batcave has been confirmed (it's one of the prizes in the lego contest)

other sets I'd love to see"
1) fortress of solitode
2) woman womans invisible jet
3) green lantern with a bunch of trans green brick to build different ring items (this idea was already brought up by someone else here)
4) hall of justice
5) still like old "adam west" batman vehicles
6) a telephone booth for clark kent to become superman

marvel:
1) xavier school
2) weapon x factory....where wolverine was created
3) danger rooms (could have different ones that link to become a big danger room)
4) a sentinal
5) a blackbird x-jet

this could be end less

Posted by JDLego in Canada, 22 Jul 2011 12:44

@vamproe

Some of these are great ideas, but wouldn`t some of these ideas for sets be a liitle on the big side, and cost a fortune, like the hall of justice, blackbird x-jet, and the xavier school. I dont really care about the price though, if they look cool I`ll get them, considering the minifigures that come with them. Thanks for the ideas though, they were great!

Posted by beefygrefe in United States, 22 Jul 2011 13:05

@ JDLego & Vamprose

With the sets we've seen for Castle (Medieval Market Village), Pirates (though it's not officially part of the line, Imperial Flag Ship) and HP (Diagon Alley); I think there's a very good chance that we'll see a 'Lego Exclusive' that's around $150-$200 for the Super Hero line (whether its an Xavier's School, JLA Hall, or Avengers Mansion...I'd go for any/all of 'em).

This is probably going to be a hella expensive line...licensing, probably more printed parts, probably higher figure counts...but I'm going to shell out...probably will buy doubles just to satisfy my inner nerd.

Posted by The Reviewer in United States, 22 Jul 2011 13:12

Why are they doing lego figure similar to Ben 10? Doesn't lego know that ben 10 and galidor were complete failures. I hope they make a new Lego spiderman sets and I hope re-release the Harley quinn batman set.

Posted by nadnerb112 in United States, 22 Jul 2011 14:42

^ Agreed I missed that set, im glad they are making another harley quinn

Posted by spency13 in United States, 22 Jul 2011 15:08

@The Reviewer, lol so true. I also hope Harley Quinn is re-released.

Posted by TheCahleySlash in United Kingdom, 22 Jul 2011 15:27

^^^They do need to bring Harley Quinn back, such an amzing character in the dc universe.

Posted by vamproe in United States, 22 Jul 2011 15:44

this line could be hard to get too.
alot of people collect "ANYTHING" marvel or DC. so not only the AFOL, kids in general...but havign to complete with the hardcore marvel fans too.

Posted by skipper1011 in United States, 22 Jul 2011 16:43

I am not impressed with TLG when they come up with good themes and then demolish them within a year or so. Toy Story, for instance, had SO much potential giving TLG the challenge of creating Mr. Potato Head,Slinky,or Big Baby. POP and Agents as well. Just saying. Anyone agree?

Posted by PaulRevere in United States, 22 Jul 2011 16:50

@skipper1011 - I kind of agree with you. It seems that TLG only wanted to feed off the movies and had less interest in developing some really great sets from those series. Agents was a really nice start to a series and then poof it was gone - so much more potential there.

Posted by bionicle212 in United States, 22 Jul 2011 17:32

@skipper1011 & paul revere- TLG did'nt make slinky and potato head because those are tradmarked by hasbro.

Posted by Thomson & Thompson in Canada, 22 Jul 2011 17:32

^^^^That's a good point. There are lots and lots of Marvel and DC fans out there.

Posted by beefygrefe in United States, 22 Jul 2011 17:39

@skipper1011

From a business perspective, I think its a bit like how Apple runs their company; I get the impression that Lego kind of tries to compete with itself so its always trying to bring out something fresh. They could continue to keep developing new ideas within a theme (like City and Castle, where there are a lot of areas to develop new ideas) but I'd rather see them be retired before they are driven into the ground (like Exo-force was). This way they always have something 'new and exciting' to drive sales and get kids excited.

Plus so far, pretty much everything Lego has done has been somewhat cyclical. Yes, Agents only lasted a year and a half (and I did love the Agents line) but it was kind of a continuation of Alpha Team. There's been several underwater themes and the 'Adventures' line (which has several incarnations under 'adventures') was reinvented with Pharaoh's Quest. Plus we had Spiderman and Batman several years ago and now we're getting them back. A person can wait long enough and Lego will do something very similar to what they missed out on when they were either too young or in their dark ages.

Posted by skipper1011 in United States, 22 Jul 2011 17:55

@beefygrefe That is a great point. Like you I loved the Agents line.

@bionicle212 Oh right. They are trademarked by Hasbro. Still would have enjoyed seeing them though.

My point is that TLG seems to create good lines and then just let them die out to nothing. I dunno. Just a thought.

There making a set with Harley Quinn? Someone please comment and tell me how you have found that out(I missed THat set) Are they making Spider-man sets?

I hope that lego makes some good DC/Marvel crossover sets.

Posted by Thomson & Thompson in Canada, 22 Jul 2011 22:11

^^^ Yes, they are making Spider-Man sets as part of this line, The Reviewer. But I'm just as clueless as you as to how everybody found out about this Harley Quinn set. Harley Quinn wasn't shown as one of those minifigures that we saw, right?

Posted by The Reviewer in United States, 22 Jul 2011 22:51

^Thompson & Thompson, are the Spiderman sets like the ones in 2003-2004 with normal minifigs? (I Hope their not like the 4Juniors ones or the Ben10 style figures) Please respond someone.

Posted by ytjedi in United States, 22 Jul 2011 23:12

@TheCahleySlash, @The Reviewer, @Thompson & Thompson

This site that has copied both the Marvel and DC press releases mentions the Harley Quinn minifig and the Spider-man line.
http://www.fandompost.com/2011/07/20/lego-confirms-dc-comics-and-marvel-comics-plans/

Posted by Jon_Brick in Canada, 22 Jul 2011 23:55

@The Reviewer
Yes they're probably standard size because the new movie is aimed at older kids so I doubt they make them all 4 junior, though there may be some.

Between my wife and I, we got 1 Green Lantern and 2 Batman promos from Comic-Con, yay!

Posted by Thomson & Thompson in Canada, 23 Jul 2011 08:28

^^^^ Thanks.

@The Reviewer- The Spider-Man sets will most probably have normal minifigures. I'm guessing that TLG will also make a Ben 10/Hero Factory style figure of Spider-Man, though.

Posted by The Reviewer in United States, 23 Jul 2011 12:11

I wonder if they will make sets with Villians that were only seen in lego form in the Lego batman video game. like:Man-bat,Mad-Hatter Etc.

Posted by spency13 in United States, 23 Jul 2011 12:48

@ The Reviewer, they better! I have been wating for a Man-Bat and Clayface ever since that game came out!! haha.

P.S. Is it too soon to ask for a Cheetah and MArtian MAnhunter??? :)

Posted by TBOC in United States, 23 Jul 2011 14:22

bionicle212: Possibly, I'm still angry with LEGO about BIONICLE, that was just cruel. Also, I wasn't to thrilled when they discontinued EXO-FORCE or Knight's Kingdom. Also, I was never a really big comic book fan. Maybe if some of the Batman sets are good. I missed out on the fist Batcave, so maybe getting some new sets would be nice.

Posted by Jarod98 in United Kingdom, 23 Jul 2011 14:40

Wow, 261 comments (and counting)! That a Brickset record. It's great to see Lego being allowed the rights to DC and Marvel Super Heroes (and Villains). This is gonna be huge!! So I'm guessing we can see the Batman and Spider-Man themes brought back to life as well as a few other themes coming in. Let's see how it goes...

Posted by Murdoch17 in United States, 23 Jul 2011 17:00

Well, I'm not much into Comic books, be it DC or Marvel. I really don't care one way or another. HOWEVER: I have a 9 year old cousin who can't get enough Comic book stuff. For example, he loves his comics so much that he used to go around saying stuff from memory. When I told him about this, he thought I was joking. When I said it was both Marvel & DC. He didn't believe me till I sent him a link. It took a moment for him to comphrehend this incredible fact: two major comic companys are comming to Lego in 2012. He then went and screamed into the phone: YAHOO!

BTW: Congrats to Huw (& Brickset) on a new record for an article!

Disney owns Marvel, it was just a matter of time after Disney got its foot in the door.

Posted by swlego@hf in United States, 23 Jul 2011 17:51

It's about time. I was waiting for Marvel to announce their deal with lego after Lego built disney sets. The DC is an added bonus! (though i wonder what it will mean for the rival companies-DC and Marvel) Frankly, the buildable superheroes look like pure kids stuff, the only one that would work is Iron Man (build-a-suit). The minifigures are hilarious, the Joker is the greatest. It's the closes they've come to his comic self.

Posted by xymox in United States, 23 Jul 2011 18:36

haha it's just amazing Marvel and DC sets on their way, boy how many of us are gonna go bankrupt :D

Posted by Doctor Leg O'Brick in United Kingdom, 24 Jul 2011 04:00

As I have not voiced my opinions much, I think that the Hulk is fine, and that doing him in that scale means that they could have a Bruce Banner Mini Figure. Iron Man? Well, much more work is needed on him. If any of you looked cloosely, you can see a flesh head under the helmet. Now yes, at this moment, he looks like a red tooth pick but if they printed a Series Four Hockey player sholder piece, it would make him look big and chunky, just the right scale. As this year we have City and NinjaGo Brickmaster books (I own the City one and have seen the NinjaGo one) I think we might have next year a Brickmaster for LEGO Superheros. We had one for Star Wars, why not give us a LEGO SuperHeros one?

Posted by spency13 in United States, 24 Jul 2011 11:04

@Doctor Leg O' Brick, I think the shoulder pad idea is great. That would make it more like a big suit. Also think a book would be nice.

Posted by Skywalker1966 in United States, 24 Jul 2011 14:11

@Zacherano: Well, I might except I like the Spider-Man, brown cylinders and those purple swirly things. Besides, the set is, how can I put this... not exactly in one piece anymore. : ) I dunno, I guess it was fun enough when I got it but, the only real features are the spinning generator and wall that breaks open. I would have to say that the only thing it is really good for are some half-decent minifigs, the windows, wood pieces, and purple swirly things. It is not the best as a set but, is great for MOCing. (sorry about the off topic comment.)

More on topic, now, I do kinda like the buildable heroes. Iron Man in particular. He really looks good in LEGO. Besides, it would give me some great pieces to build a custom HERO Factory guy.

Posted by Doctor Leg O'Brick in United Kingdom, 24 Jul 2011 14:23

The book could be Marvel or DC and have one Hero and one "bad guy". As all the Brickmasters (@LEGOlas1 Brickmaster is not only a US sign up and give over the money/send you a set, It is also a series of books with two Mini figures and 150+ pieces for £18.99.) have regular Minifigures, (Pirate/Imperial, Clone/droid, Kai/Frakjaw, Knight/skelly, Police officer/Crook, Diver/Manta) it might be Batman and Joker or Thor and Loki as they are the most logical to put in a Brickmaster. @spency13 thanks, maybe if TLG made chunky hands like the ones on the Series Five boxer to make him look bigger even more, as this seems to be the same thing TLG wanted on the Hulk.

Posted by LukeSkywalker in Ireland, 24 Jul 2011 14:32

I don't really understand why they felt it necessary to display most of those figures at the convention, because they look pretty shocking up close, especially the Captain America figure, which looks like there were pieces of paper superglued to the head and torso, badly. And the rest of them look like they've been spraypainted. It doesn't reflect the usual high standards in LEGO quality, having the announcement of acquiring the DC and Marvel licenses was enough for me (and I'm sure for most fans too), I didn't need to see some of those abominations! At least it'll make the final products look amazing in comparison. :)

Posted by The Reviewer in United States, 24 Jul 2011 15:10

I wonder in the Spiderman sets they will have Venom,Sandman, goblin, or maybe Carnage in minifigure form.

With this new Dc/marvel theme Harry Potter will probably end soon since there are no more movies (Hurray) Hopefully this new superhero theme will put the ax on Harry Potter(good ridince)

Posted by Gregorovich in United Kingdom, 25 Jul 2011 06:22

@The Reviewer,

I don't think we'll be seeing all those villains in the first wave. Remember that list I copied from Eurobricks? The only SM characters were Doc Oc and Spidey himself. This makes me think there's only going to be one Spiderman set this wave.

And (sorry for being off topic), if HP does get the axe because of this theme, I'll be very very sad. I hope to see at least one more wave corresponding with the game release, but I'm not all that sure we will get it.

Posted by Zacherano in United States, 25 Jul 2011 08:19

@ all Brickset members who have enjoyed Harry Potter sets over the years ----

Stick up for what I believe to be one of Lego's best themes! With so many beautiful parts, well-designed characters, and unique building styles, Harry Potter Lego will live beyond the sets. I have been overjoyed every time Lego has released another phenomenal HP set, and I too am upset to understand that this might finally come to an end. I had accepted this in 2007, but it seems that we all must accept it again now.

@ all Brickset members who have mercilessly torn apart the legacy of HP Lego in this post ----

It's okay not to like the sets, but you could at least try to be a little sensitive. :-)

Posted by The Reviewer in United States, 25 Jul 2011 12:13

Well, I hope we get a Venom minifig out of these new Spider-man sets.

Posted by LukeSkywalker in Ireland, 25 Jul 2011 13:27

about a year out of my dark ages, but loved both lego and comics as a kid.
this is really amazing news. my heart literally skipped a beat when I found out.
as a kid, when I would play with my xmen/spiderman/marvel superheroes/dc/batman tas/superman tas figs it would make me upset. the licenses traveled across many manufacturers like toy biz, kenner, etc., that the figures in my collection weren't compatable. Hulk was shorter than everyone!

So I can legitimately say that i've waited my whole life for this. Modular figs from both these licenses is a dream come true. Plus, they can be assimilated to the rest of our collections. The Agents can be faux SHIELD. City of Atlantis 7985 can be Namor's crib, etc etc

AWESOME

Posted by Silverpalm009 in United States, 25 Jul 2011 18:02

Well, this is pretty much the most exciting Lego news I've heard in basically ever. :P

@TheReviewer Sorry for jumping in here, but I'd just like to point out that, as both a Christian and avid Harry Potter fan I can say for a fact that Harry Potter does not actually promote Witchcraft, Voodoo, Satanism, etc. etc. In fact, in every book Christmas is mentioned and it represents a wonderful time for the characters (except for in the 7th book) and it promotes themes such as love being the most powerful force in the universe and how friendship and good conquers all. Sorry for the rant, now back on topic.

Posted by TooMuchLEGO in United States, 25 Jul 2011 18:18

@Silverpalm009:

Oh cool, didn't know you were on here (you know me from LEGO.com). And I agree with your HP statement.

Man, you know what's a bummer about being a kid? Lack of income. Now, I gotta rack up even more cash if I want Wii U AND these sets.
