2012 Star Wars rumours

  • 2012 Star Wars rumours

Posted by Huw, 09 Aug 2011 17:51. Filed under New sets.

We don't usually post unsubstantiated rumous about forthcoming sets but this particular one seems to be gathering some weight given that the likes of Jedi News is publishing it.

So, the rumour is, verbatim, that there will be a new range of ‘planets’ sets. These will each include a hollow planet, a buildable mini vehicle and a mini-figure.

    • 9674 Naboo Starfighter and Naboo Pilot
    • 9675 Sebulba’s Podracer and Sebulba
    • 9676 TIE Interceptor and TIE Pilot

Notable on this new list is that the battle packs will now mix heroes and villains into one box…

    • 9488 ARC Troopers vs. Commando Droids
    • 9489 Endor Rebel (x2) vs. Scout Trooper & Stormtrooper
    • 9491 Geonosian Cannon
    • 9490 Droid Escape
    • 9492 TIE Fighter
    • 9493 X-Wing
    • 3866 Battle of Hoth (LEGO Games)

Now I have no idea whether any of this is true but it makes good reading on a slow news week.

This 'hollow planet' idea sounds very interesting. However, it's probably going to be something really cool or something really dull.

9489 Endor Rebel (x2) vs. Scout Trooper & Stormtrooper

This one peaks my interests given my love for the Ewoks and Return of the Jedi.

Also rumors of the exclusives:
Y-Wing
Anakin's green jedi interceptor

ARC Troopers and COMMANDO DROIDS! Amazing! I wonder what set Queen Amidala will be featured in?

Posted by 18000pieces in United States, 09 Aug 2011 18:50

This sounds interesting. I've thought for years that they ought to do battle packs that way, and I might actually buy the Endor one, which would be my first battle pack in years (they've been too expensive for my taste).

The planet sets have great potential, but will most likely be even more ludicrously overpriced than other sets, and I've already got tons of minis, although a Naboo fighter mini will be interesting to see.

I really want to know what 9490 Droid Escape might be - I'd imagine it's something to do with the Geonosian factory, which would be cool as that's an area not yet covered by LEGO.

I think you left out the most important part from the Toys'n'Bricks post, though; the x-wing might include a PORKINS minifigure! Woooo!

(For those of you who don't know, Porkins is the rather, *ahem* chubby x-wing pilot in the battle of Endor. See the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFPI54fOWoo )

I think those 'hollow' planet ideas were done with the regular Hasbro figure sets like late 90's or so?
Definitely looking forward to a Tie-Fighter and the Battle Packs sound fun. Oh, also a Hoth game? Wonder if the game play is decent...

Posted by ceroknight in Canada, 09 Aug 2011 19:15

@18000pieces: The droid escape is rumoured to be the classic droid escape including R2-D2, C-3P0, and 2 sandtroopers. You can see the rest in eurobricks, but I am having a bit of trouble going on the site at the moment... :/

Posted by itsaturkey in United States, 09 Aug 2011 19:36

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! ANOTHER NABOO FIGHTER!!!!!!!!!
Besides the 5 plus edition of the starfighter, everything else sounds awesome! I love the idea of hollow planets and combined battle packs. That is, if they are true...

Posted by AddictedToStyrene in Australia, 09 Aug 2011 20:10

Maybe the 'hollow planet' is a container like with Pods or Tiny Turbos. It could be a largish piece of plastic with some Lego studs.

Posted by K-nut in United States, 09 Aug 2011 20:15

I don't believe this. Why? Where's Amidala? Just because I don't believe it doesn't mean I don't want it. I'm loving the battlepacks and cannon.

Posted by Mike-o-saurus in United States, 09 Aug 2011 20:55

Well, the Amidala fig we saw from comic-con seemed to be in the earliest stages of design. It's more likely we'll see her in a big summer playset. I think this list looks pretty legitimate.

Posted by Da_LegoBuilder in United States, 09 Aug 2011 21:36

I heard that the ARC trooper-Commando Droid battle pack had an ARF Trooper AND an ARC trooper. I can't wait for the new sets!

I also heard that the geonosian cannon wil have gree, and bariss offee.

Only time will tell...I haven't seen any pictures of the 2012 sets yet.

Posted by Ha876 in United States, 09 Aug 2011 21:36

I like the planet idea because it allows us to get some of the more elusive minifigs or minifigs that come in expensive sets for a much lower price, and who doesn't love the mini vehicle. Not sure about the planet thing though.

Posted by Ypres in Canada, 09 Aug 2011 21:39

Well it's fun to think about all the Starwars re-makes we'll see in 2012. I truely can't wait for the next batch of random new starwars minifigs to be thrown into sets... lord knows that is 99% of what's selling them. I also can't wait for the $120 US set to come to $155 CAN. Because you'll see the bloody thing go on sale for $95 US within a week and in Canada have it go for $145 after maybe half a year. That's truely the difference between US and CAN.

So try and understand why some (Canadians) might care a little less than others. Even if I love the sets I wouldn't probably touch one until 2012(Q4)-2013. I still haven't gotten the recent battle packs! :(

You'll know when you see a Canadian shopping for Lego... we'll have Tribal paint on our face! The hunt will really be on for some of these up coming Starwars sets ;)

Posted by Kulturkampf in United States, 09 Aug 2011 21:47

I heard there may be a Y-wing as well.

Posted by voypro in United States, 09 Aug 2011 21:54

@ Huw Sorry to be off topic, but think your slow news day is about to end, as I am seeing some series 5 Mini figs on ebay. May be a pre-sale, but still.

Looking forward to seeing what the board game is like. We really enjoyed the Harry Potter one, which is the only licensed board game so far. Hopefully, it's a lot of fun.

well i need more clones.

Posted by Dlakii in Australia, 10 Aug 2011 00:46

This proposal to merge "hero" and "villain" battle packs into one is an interesting one, I must say, especially if it results in regular greater point-in-the-story variety between the two yearly packs as it is in these rumours. I am curious, though - would they leave the battle packs at just four minifigs each - two for each side -, or would they increase the number to six to facilitate a three-for-each-side figure which'd be more conducive to the army-building intent behind them? Or is this just me projecting silly thoughts onto the rumours and possibilities? :P

Also, I guess the notion of another X-wing to complement the 2012 TIE and this year's Falcon was pretty much inevitable, certainly not an unwelcome one by any means. Assuming it's what the reused name suggests, redoing the Droid Escape seems like a nice idea, a presumably relatively cheap way to pick up R2 and 3PO which again has its use in their absence from this year's Falcon. I'm not totally sold on the notion of "planet" sets as of yet, but I have no precedent in what to expect from them - what sort of size, constitution and piece count we're looking at, that sort of thing which in sets of ships and structures is pretty obvious by now given how long they've been around.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 10 Aug 2011 02:32

@voypro, is series 5 not out in the USA yet then? It's been available here for a few weeks.

Posted by CapnRex101 in United Kingdom, 10 Aug 2011 03:58

I am struggling with these planet sets, I would love to see the Imperial one as it would be a great way to get TIE Pilots (and after buying 150 Stormtroopers yesterday for 74.14 on eBay) they will look great with the Emperor getting out of his shuttle etc. However the others, if you want the Sebulba figure but don't want the big Podracers set then that is good to have, and I suppose the same applies to the Naboo Starfighter, although I don't think that has a very desirable Minifigure. I hope these 'planet' sets will be like the old Minis, about £4.99 with about 50 pieces.

As for the regular sets, I am loving these.

9488 ARC Troopers vs. Commando Droids - This sounds amazing, apparently it is made up of 2 Commando droids (they had better do some new sculpts) an ARF trooper of some sort and an ARC trooper, I have a feeling that the ARC trooper will be based on Colt or Blitz from the show, limiting it's appeal in multiples. I would liked to have seen maybe Geonosis Sonic Troopers instead and ARC Troopers in a bigger set which you would only want one of. My guess for the price - £9.99

9489 Endor Rebel (x2) vs. Scout Trooper & Stormtrooper - Doesn't sound bad at all, a bit boring that there are no new figures but still good, unless the vehicle is a tree or suchlike. Price - £9.99

9491 Geonosian Cannon - The best of the bunch for me, it apparently includes a Geonosian warrior, a Geonosian zombie, commander Gree and Barriss Offee, all awesome! I thought they would make warrior and zombie figures for the Geonosians, after making the head sculpt for the Geonosian Starfighter. Price - £25.99

9490 Droid Escape - This sounds decent, any way to get R2 and 3PO has to be! I do hope they do a good escape pod though. Price - £25.99

9492 TIE Fighter - We have all seen the images, and it is widely accepted it looks great, but I am fearful for the price. Price - £49.99

9493 X-Wing - Sounds great to get Porkins (cockpit death fat guy) and his Astromech, which should share the same head sculpt as the Astromech from set 9492 TIE fighter. Luke will probably have been redone with a new more detailed helmet, and the new face with the visor. The ship itself will probably be quite similar to its previous incarnations, as they have been accurate since the very first one. Price - £59.99

I also have received information about Gold Leader's Y-Wing (set 9495) and Anakin's Jedi Interceptor (set 9494), the figures for the Y-Wing are unknown but for the Interceptor are Anakin, Obi-wan, Nute Gunray, Mustafar Droid and Security Battle droid. Sounds like a Mustafar duel set basically.

Really hope Lego cash in on the hype in the gaming community surrounding Star Wars: The Old Republic. Would love to see some Old Republic era Lego sets.

9488 ARC Troopers vs. Commando Droids l hope this set is gonna to be realese!!!

Posted by goldfish in United Kingdom, 10 Aug 2011 07:34

Really sorry to say, but this is a very lacklustre list. There is not a thing on it that gives me any excitement. The re-hashing and also inflation busting price rises are really starting to taint this line for me, much as I love many of the existing sets. Why do we need 4 or 5 versions of X-Wings, Tie Fighters, Falcons etc.
There is so much that could be done still. I happen to think that the Return of The Jedi is quite under cooked for sets done well. Also, we are crying out for a proper Cantina set with large minifig count including band, snaggletooth, Ponda Baba etc etc

Posted by blazetrooper501 in United States, 10 Aug 2011 09:09

It is possible that the droid escape will have a dewback maybe but I cant wait to get these.

Posted by voypro in United States, 10 Aug 2011 09:20

@Huw No sign of Series 5 minifigs in my neck of the woods. Haven't heard of them anywhere in the USA yet. Anyone?

RE: Star Wars Battle packs. I would like to see lego take a different approach. Some characters like Stormtrooper / Clonetroopers lend themselves to Uniformity, some do not. I would like to see Jawa Battle packs, but done with like 5 different sets of, heads, legs, torsos, capes. With those 4 elements you could design 5x5x5x5=625 assembled differently figures. Okay, so we don't need 625 different Jawas, but you get the point. Also, the same concept could be applied to Sand People (Tusken Raiders), maybe even Ewoks... or Genosian.

Then TLG could make a Larger UCS Jawa Sandcrawler, Tusken Raider village, Ewok village, Genosian Arena

Pics or it didn't happen!

Posted by K-nut in United States, 10 Aug 2011 10:42

Oftopic. Yeah Huw, rub it in our faces! :P

Ontopic. Yeah I also heard of Anakins Jedi Interceptor. It supposedly has Anakin, Obi-Wan, Nute Gunray, a Mustafar Droid, and a Security Battle Droid. This one sounds awesome to me because I'm 99% sure it's ROTS, My question is what ship it is? It wouldn't be Anakins Startfighter because it has too many figs. But I really want redesigned ROTS version of Anakin and Obi-Wan.
I'm loving the battlepacks, though I thought They'd wait to release The Endor one until 2013 for 30th anniversary. I sort of wish it were ARC troopers in one pack and Commando Droids in the other.

Posted by Skywalker1966 in United States, 10 Aug 2011 11:04

Dang, I hope LEGO actually does this... I think I'll buy the ARC Troopers VS. Commando Droids.

Here is a picture of one of the 2012 sets from Comic Con I really like the minifigures for the Tie Fighter. Get this link while you can http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVdSMa0XEq0&feature=related !

Posted by Super Robot Wars in Ireland, 10 Aug 2011 12:36

@voypro I read on the lego wikipedia that Series 5 minifigs won't be released in the United States until September 1, 2011 which is quite odd. The link is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lego_Minifigures_(theme)

Posted by FloridaEggplant in Canada, 10 Aug 2011 14:30

@18000pieces

Porkins is the rebel pilot of the battle of Yavin 4.

Posted by Mike-o-saurus in United States, 10 Aug 2011 17:22

It is rumored that the minifigs for 9495 will be Dutch Vander, R5-F7, and for whatever reason; Princess Leia. In ceremonial costume possibly.

Posted by mars4life in United States, 10 Aug 2011 19:35

I am hardly at all excited for these sets. I'm tired of remakes of tie fighters and x wings. Its not like there are no more possible sets for star wars that haven't been made yet. If lego doesnt start making some newer sets for star wars, i foresee the theme ending far sooner than it ought to. Almost every one of these "new sets" have been made before. Not thrilling me. As for the planets, might be interesting, but i need to know more. At least its a breath of fresh air.

Posted by stevotherad in United States, 10 Aug 2011 20:18

I bet the planet sets will have the planet integrated into the packaging kinda like those mini racer sets and the smallest creater sets with the plastic cases. I'm not looking forward to a $25 droid escape. I bet the price of the battle packs will go up to $15 too. Except for the tie fighter, looks like I'm spending my money on the superhero sets.

Posted by grr1231 in United States, 10 Aug 2011 20:22

Interested about the planet idea and the battle packs sound cool. Still dissapointed they haven't done more Force Unleashed sets. It would be cool to get a general Kota minifig.

Posted by BooMakuta! in United States, 10 Aug 2011 21:30

@grr1231-not everyone plays the Force Unleashed game. I seriously doubt that people would catch on, as most people hated the Rogue Shadow.

@Mike-o-saurus-darn, if it's $60.00 then there is no hope...I was hoping to get all the ceremonial minifigs; I already have Luke, was planning for Han...

@CapnRex101-all sets will probably have bad price/piece ratios. NOOOOOOOO!!! I NEED BARRISS! And a Geonosian ZOMBIE! And GREE! WHY OH WHY MUST LEGO TORTURE US? WHY?!!!!!!

Whoops, overreacted...

Posted by unleashed in United States, 10 Aug 2011 21:52

Planets sets and battle packs sound interesting... im just curious about both of them.
Planets Packs: Is the mini Vehicle the one they use in the movies, or just a (very) smaller minifig scale one? Will these sets be about $10.00? How do u make the planet?
Battle packs: are they the same regular price? Are they bigger? Is the clone wars battle pack only using those minifigs?

Posted by Mike-o-saurus in United States, 10 Aug 2011 22:19

@unleashed: It is believed that the planets will be formed out of two semi-spherical pieces 8-10 studs wide.

Is it just me, or does it seem like TLC is introducing a new scale for the OT fighters? The new TIE looks like it might actually be in proper scale with the UCS Millennium Falcon, its at least a third larger than all of its previous forms. It would certainly dwarf the current X-wing, a fact which gives me hope that the new X-wing will be a completely redesigned fighter rather than a rehash with a few flick-fires thrown in.

I just know I'll cry if they reuse that horrible canopy...

Posted by BooMakuta! in United States, 11 Aug 2011 08:46

@Mike-o-saurus-what horrible canopy?

Posted by Mike-o-saurus in United States, 11 Aug 2011 09:59

The one on all past and present versions of the X-wing and snowspeeder. It works fine for Y-wings, but looks nothing like a proper X-wing canopy.

Posted by CaptainJonnyBoy in United States, 11 Aug 2011 13:20

Well, they better make the commando droids right. I need to be able to stick a clone helmet on 'em. Will definetly get that and the Geonosian Sonic Cannon.

Would be cool to see a remake of the tie bomber.

I see the new lego star wars character encyclopedia is now posted on amazon although with release date 3rd october. Free minifig is Han Solo with what seems to be wearing a medal. Guess it is going along the same theme as the last book

Another X-wing? They have re-realeased that set every year since 2006 and my nearest lego store in downtown disney anaheim california has it and my local TRU has it too.So why do we need another X-wing?(I hope it comes with yoda's hut like the 2004 version)
