Welcome to the first in what will hopefully be a regular feature here at Brickset news: my personal 'pick of the week'. Each week (particularly on slow news weeks :-) ) I'll present a mini-review of a set that I've just built or have found at a bargain price on the Internet somewhere.

First up it's a set that meets both these criteria: one of the new SpongeBob sets, 3815, Heroic Heroes of the Deep. I have to confess to not being a big SBSP fan having never seen the cartoon. I bought this set and 3816, Glove World from Amazon this week mainly to keep my minifig collection complete. I wasn't expecting too much from it, but when I opened it, I was pleasantly surprised.

For starters, the minifigs are excellent. SpongeBob and Patrick are in colourful super hero costumes, and Plankton comes in some sort of diving machine (excuse my ignorance, as I said, I've never seen the cartoon :-) ). The main protagonists both feature cloth capes in rare colours, blue and green, and SpongeBob carries a red version of the collectable minifigure alien ray-gun which fires LEGO ice-cream.

The coolness doesn't stop there though; it's not obvious from the pictures (at least it wasn't to me) that the set features quite a few parts, including the ice-cream, in the new 'dark azure' blue colour used for the Alien Conquest minifigs. I hope this is the first of many apperances of this very nice colour.

Once built, the ship-on-wheels looks very colourful indeed and I'm sure very appealing to young fans of the cartoon. To make it even more tempting, it's currently 25% off at Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com. Order your copies below:

Having never collected a Spongebob set in my life, I thought I might get this one- it actually looks cool. Oh and Huw, the vehicle thingy, it's called a boatcar in the series apparently. And I'm looking forward to this, it looks neat!

Neat new feature, @Huw, and thanks for the heads-up on a set that I wouldn't normally have paid much attention to ! At 25% off on Amazon right now, I have to admit I'm almost tempted.....

Hmmm...hey Huw, do you mind doing a review of one of the new Star Wars sets? I'd like to see more details of that Millennium Falcon.

Heroic Heroes of the Deep is not based on a episode from season 1 to 7.So it might be form an episode which has not aired yet.

Posted by spency13 in United States, 20 Aug 2011 11:17

Huw, your not being ignorant, these outfits have NEVER been aired on a show before. (I'm a total SB nerd ;P)

Posted by QwertyLEGO in United States, 20 Aug 2011 11:45

Spongebob and patrciks suits are really similar the ones they were wearing in the episode "Memaid Man and Barnacle Boy 5". Also, that Plankton vehicle is probably based off of in the episode "Friend or Foe"

Good idea, Huw!

I've been thinking the set over... I think for me (having moved away from my spongebob days) getting the set will come down to unique pieces/parts.

If anybody hasn't seen Spongebob I'd suggest doing so... the new episodes are Nick-covered garbage however the really old ones contain humour for adults too.

And so, the heroes of the league of nautical non-sense beat the Marvel & DC superheroes...

I'd definitely buy this. It's worth keeping.

I hope this means an update in the Spongebob gallery sometime in the future, and this really is a good idea.

Posted by legomaniac in United States, 20 Aug 2011 14:07

Never knew this set existed until now. Good selection of pieces. I love that cylinder with door.

The only Spongebob set i ever got was the Bikini Bottom Express, the bus was so sleek and roundish too. I was going to collect more but the one with Squidward was always expensive, it was hard to get it during sales. Luckily it's still in stores. I'm definitely interested in Heroic Heroes,, thouhg.

Can someone explain why Amazon.ca has weird pricings such as $90 dollars for Plo Koon's Starfighter?

Posted by Berrybrick in United States, 20 Aug 2011 15:58

I think it's because it has been retired.

Posted by The Reviewer in United States, 20 Aug 2011 16:48

Even though I've liked spongebob ever since I was 4 ,I still think Glove world is a better set(The heroes set is not based off any episode ,but simillar to Mermaid man and Barnacle boy 5 one) (Has anyone noticed in "Just one bite" episode that they deleted the part were squidward knocks the bucket of gas and the match falls on him and he gets lit on fire?)

I just saw this set at my local TRU, looks really fun. Not much on the Sponge bob front in a long time nice to see some new sets.

Posted by youngtom in United States, 20 Aug 2011 22:18

when are you making more minifig galleries?

Posted by boboloveslego2 in United States, 20 Aug 2011 22:54

I LOVE HOW IT LOOKS AND i love spongebob. this set just looks TOTALLY COSMIC. i am going to get this set. immediately. spongebobs gun/blaster looks great. goofy at the same time, but great.

Posted by Be-Burger in Israel, 21 Aug 2011 04:24

This looks like an interesting set, even though I dislike the entire SBSP series...

Posted by Elli in Australia, 21 Aug 2011 08:33

Huw, I was just wondering what ever happened to the Mini-Fig Gallery? Are you perhaps waiting to surprise us with a long awaited Star Wars :). Or are you inquiring Mini-Figs to certain themes still. Still a lovely review of the new Spongebob Set.

Posted by billy1102 in United Kingdom, 21 Aug 2011 09:21

This set looks really good , not paid much attention to the SBSP series but i think i might get this set. Also i hope this 'set of the week' will carry on because i'll love to see more different sets.

Posted by AETerry in United States, 21 Aug 2011 11:32

Yeah! This is a fun little set, especially with not being a fan of Spongebob either. Plankton's the only part that causes me feelings of meh. But I love the boat, Patrick and Spongebob in their superhero outfits. I also hope to see more of the red laser gun and the blue piece for the ice cream or bubbles in this set.

Posted by itsaturkey in United States, 21 Aug 2011 14:44

Can't wait for next week. Great review Huw (Or should it be @Huw Hmm...) :)
Is the floating drill thingy (excuse my vocabulary) holding a hamburger menu?

Posted by LukeSkywalker in Ireland, 21 Aug 2011 15:47

I love this set, picked it up in Smyths before they had even finished packing the shelves with it. :) The new-coloured parts and the superhero versions of SpongeBob and Patrick look awesome (maybe it was a sign of things to come when this set was revealed, with the full-blown DC/Marvel Superheroes theme launching next year). I absolutely love the new azure-blue, and I too hope that it appears in plenty of future sets, it's such a bright and cheerful colour, I'm getting tired of all the Star Wars-grey I have. ;)

"...and Plankton comes in some sort of diving machine (excuse my ignorance, as I said, I've never seen the cartoon :-) )."

Well, in my many many years of watching Spongebob, I've never seen Plankton use that. :P

But anyway, it does seem like an interesting set, especially being reviewed up close.

Sounds like a really cool feature Huw! Looking forward to seeing quite a few of these.

I was wondering though, what ever happened to the Minifigure Galleries? Will we be getting any updates soon?

Posted by The Reviewer in United States, 21 Aug 2011 23:25

This set has never been in the show (The episodes from 1999-2005 were the Golden age of Spongebob, but now they just keep getting dumber and dumber, and the humor is stupid dirty humor that is pointless and they keep getting repetitive.) (Even though there have been a few good episodes here and there) And most shows on Nickelodeon are stupid like Mr meaty,Kappa-Mikey, and Fanboy and chum-chum are stupid.

Posted by Stardusty in Croatia, 22 Aug 2011 10:01

I think ice-cream is suposed to represent bubbles. Set is really nice, with some cool and rare pieces + awesome figs. I'll probably pass it, due to my budget, but I still like it.

Nice review!

I really like this idea, might even tempt me to buy some of these 'pick of the week' sets.

^^^I have been asking the same question to myself.

Posted by NeilMartin in United Kingdom, 22 Aug 2011 15:13

Huw, I've just clicked through to Amazon and purchased one of these sets (for the new parts). While there I also purchased a Sci-Fi novel; do you receive credit for non-Lego purchases as well?

Just curious :-)

BTW, great new feature!

Posted by wildcherryp3psi in United Kingdom, 22 Aug 2011 20:53

Just bought this set, I really liked the minifigures and the build was quick and fun!

This sets seem to be selling out at stores in my area.

Posted by legoDad42 in United States, 26 Aug 2011 18:38

^Yep sharky. Me too. I see it selling well 'cause the price point is excellent and there are some nice printed pieces and rare elements too. I just picked one up and to me, it feels like old Lego...meaning, nice bright primary colors and wonderful to play with. I hope for a Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy set sometime soon.

Posted by Hello_World! in United States, 27 Aug 2011 12:49

Cool Huw I think that I might eventual get this set,I like that blue cape:)
And the boat looks good too.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 28 Aug 2011 06:07

@NM--yes, everything: LEGO, books, CDs, Cartier watches, everything Amazon sells.
