Amazon bargain watch changes

  • Amazon bargain watch changes

Posted by Huw, 18 Sep 2011 14:54. Filed under Brickset.

Thank you for all of your (mostly) positive and useful feedback about this new feature.

The feature is here to stay -- I know a lot of you have found it really useful --  but I don't want to alienate those of you that don't. So...

    • The existing news feed contains all articles published, however you can now subscribe to one without the Amazon updates, and also new feeds containing just the Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com updates. There are links to these in the menu.
    • For Amazon.co.uk,  discounts will now only be posted if a price change takes it over 30% and it's more than £1. This should stop the recent ones we've seen where a 15p discount changes the saving from 29% to 30%, only for it to reverse the next day.
    • For Amazon.com, discounts will now only be posted if a price change takes it over 25% and it's more than $1. I've reduced the threshold to 25% because Amazon.com's discounts aren't usually so large.

I hope these changes meet with your approval.

All seems good :) Thanks once again for all the effort you put into running and maintaining this site Huw.

I bet that "(mostly)" meant my comments, eh? :) ;) Anyway, I welcome anything to limit the unnecessary appearance of the automated articles. :P

Where are these new feeds?

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 18 Sep 2011 16:10

@paulm: Here: http://www.brickset.com/rss/news/?amazonUS For the UK: http://www.brickset.com/rss/news/?amazonUK

I probably should have spoken up earlier, but I know that some Aussie's buy from Amazon.fr, as it's the only Amazon that ships to us. Maybe, just maybe, you could set up the automated pages for Amazon.fr?

Thanks! This is a great feature!

Thanks Huw! This is an awesome feature!

I don't see why it's such a big fuss to have ONE group of automated articles. It's not like there are auto-reports about new themes, or conventions, or Summer sets! It's a wonderful function that doubles as a stress reliever for Huw, DrDave, and all the Brickset peoples! If you don't like it, don't read it. It's not lazy or anything either.

Thanks for the great feature Huw!
P.S. Sorry for being off topic but where did the random Bricklist box go?

Posted by paulm in United States, 19 Sep 2011 01:32

@Alemas, the code in your HTML header (which the browser picks up for RSS) is pointing to a broken link: http://www.brickset.com/rss/legoshop/us/new/

Huw, fantastic job!
This new arrangement suits everyone--those who like it, and those who don´t.
There IS just ONE MORE THING....

....Is there a direct link to the discount page, or has the page been scrapped?

P.S. Off topic but, don´t I have a higher bronze review count? ;{)

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 19 Sep 2011 04:52

YES there IS a link to the discount page BUT it's only shown to those in the UK. I could also show the link to those who amazon.co.uk ship to, but it doesn't include NZ: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=hp_rel_topic?ie=UTF8&nodeId=524836, so there'd be little point cluttering up your page with it.

I feel silly for not being able to find it myself, but where is the Amazon-less news feed?

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 19 Sep 2011 09:17

Linked to on the home page menu, http://www.brickset.com/rss/news/?noamazon

@paulm, they are the right location but there's a problem with some of the data in it which is causing them not to display. It takes data directly from LEGO's product feed but it seems there are invalid unicode characters in it, so I'll remove the offending information to get them going again. BTW, @Alemas has nowt to do with the site other than being a valued member :-)

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 19 Sep 2011 10:27

@Huw: I had to look up "nowt". :P As I suspected, it stands for "nothing", from Northern English. :P Oh, and if you call me a "valued member", then why don't I have some privileges, like "trusted reviewer"?! :P XD JK. XD

Posted by BrickBob09 in United Kingdom, 19 Sep 2011 10:35

@Stacy; Huw is going to set this up for Amazon.fr (as far as I know) and other sites but it will take time. Soon though, Huw should have these in all Amazon websites.

I hate Amacon's prices on discontinued sets; The Cloud city is $700, The 2005 Trubo tank is $500 ,The 2002 Republic gunship is $500 , Jabba's Palace is $300 , the 2002 Geonosian starfighter is $150! Man I wish Amazon would make a limit on how much discontinued lego sets cost. (The limit should be $150)

Posted by JKLaukkanen in Finland, 19 Sep 2011 11:51

How about adding amazon.de?

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 19 Sep 2011 12:00

@JKLaukkanen: Didn't I already say "Patience, young one"?! :P They're implementing it!

Posted by BrickBob09 in United Kingdom, 19 Sep 2011 15:19

@JKLaukkanen; to elaborate on Alemas's point, Huw will eventually have ALL the Amazon sites. Just give him a little time, he's not superman ;) So please stop asking for all the individual sites individually, and be rest assured your request will be seen too :P

Just remember Huw's plan: "Today Amazon.com, tomorrow the World!" :P

Posted by Zrath in United States, 19 Sep 2011 18:38

I think this is a nifty feature and very handy, because Amazon prices are almost like the stock market.
They vary wildly and you never know how long the lower prices will hold.
For example, the 7964 Republic Frigate was $87.05 on Amazon US for about 3 days (MSRP is $120).
There was no reason that I could fathom why it was that low.
But I sure as shootin' ordered three of the suckers while the going was good. :D

@The Reviewer: those are not Amazon prices per se, they're the prices of people selling on Amazon Marketplace.
Amazon doesn't have those in stock. Non-Amazon employees selling on Amazon have those in-stock.
It's kinda like eBay, except no auctions.
You have much to learn, youngling. :D

Hi there Huw, Thanks for answering my question, I completely understand.
Thanks too to you, and everyone else at Brickset who have had a part in this arrangement.

All Members of Brickset,

^^@ Zrath: I know the people who sell disontinued sets on amazon are non-amazon sellers. What I mean to say is I wish the non-amazon sellers would make the prices lower. ( lego needs to know what they need to re-release)
