6863 Batwing Battle over Gotham City, which is part of the Superheroes/DC Universe theme new for 2012, is now available online at ToysRUs.com: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12326410

The $39.99 price appears to include the notorious TRU markup, but if you're looking for that special holiday gift, having this wrapped under the tree a few weeks before its general availability might just fit the bill.

Thanks to Brickset members 'thebrickshow' and 'pickabrick4' for the heads up!

I'm kinda disappointed in how the Super Hero sets turned out... They don't look that good, but I'll still buy them :/
Hopefully the Marvel sets will be better.

I've been checking the TRU stores near me to see if they were stocking the Two Face set but no luck, maybe now that this one is available for shipping, it will be in stores too.

I was also hoping they wouldn't be marked up right away but that's a bust.

Not going to pay the tru markup. Plenty of time to find these at a reasonable price.

Posted by jocappy in United States, 08 Dec 2011 04:40

under 300 pieces and 40 bucks? pass. anyone know if the flying dutchman retail price not tru mark up?

Posted by legomatt in United Kingdom, 08 Dec 2011 04:45

I'm seeing a repeat of the same mistake as last time with Batman. A lack-lustre sporadic release schedule, which will have all but fizzled out by the time TTgames get a new LEGO Heroes videogame out (?), and by then (IF that happens) the toys will have been and went. IF however, Lego would get its act together and start syncronising this stuff (i.e. toys released in the year following a christmas videogame release), they'd be overwhelmed with demand. But then, as seen with the appalling mishandling of UNIVERSE (i.e. no cross-platform support via real-world models), they seem amazingly blinkered in their approach to business. Sometimes it amazes me how badly they do things, AND never learn from mistakes. *roll eyes*

There is still hope for superheroes...Marvel stuff is always better.

Posted by Berrybrick in United States, 08 Dec 2011 07:14

Voypro: Agree completely with you

legomatt: TT games has already announced a game for later in 2012 and the license is multi-year, so you do the math
http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/LEGO_Batman_2%3A_DC_Super_Heroes

Krivorn: Not IMO

Posted by legomatt in United Kingdom, 08 Dec 2011 08:01

@Berrybrick: Well, in that case, Lego had better keep these early released sets on slow-burn, capable of going back into production mid 2013 if they want to maximise sales of the theme, because IF these models are in the new heroes video game scheduled for late 2012, then it won't be until AFTER christmas 2012 (once the kids have had a chance to receive the game and played it a bit) that the demand for the models will peak. BUT if the models have already come and gone (which these ones will likely have done), and LEGO have cooled off from the theme due to slow sales (which we may see again), we'll have that Batman farce all over again, i.e. parents and kids wanting models that came and went before the videogame-induced demand. If it does happen again, i will both laugh and cry. Laugh incredulous at LEGO's stupidity, and then cry as they mothball what would be a great theme if handled properly.

@jocappy - under 300 pieces and $40? I bet by the time these are available in Europe I'll be paying £35-£40 so that's nearer $50 at current exchange rates. I'll be stunned if it's £30.

The set itself is a bit basic. No surprises that the Batwing could be mostly assembled from basic black plates and slopes, but hoped for a bit more from the Joker's chopper. Would it have been too much to ask for a bit more purple, somewhere for him to sit rather than hang off a ladder, etc?

All that said, and I will still be spending birthday money on these in January. They will sell like hot cakes to anybody who missed out on the original Batman sets, or wants a joker fig - like Indiana Jones, you'll soon have planty of Batman ones. The other sets will no doubt sell well too, mainly for figs - superman vs lex looks a good set for that. I think there is enough buzz around these that they don't need to be supporting or be supported by a game/ movie release.

Do not expect to see Bat sets in the sale aisles a few months after release. I just hope they arrive in time for January sales here in the UK so we can maybe get those high prices for licensed sets down to a more reasonable figure while they are in stock.

The City marina this year had 280 pieces and was $50 and that's with no lisence costs.

When news about this broke on FBTB last night. user Darth Jokar confirmed with LEGO that the $39.99 price is in fact MSRP. Expect to see this hit $45-50 at TRU by beginning of the year.

>Canadian MSRP is 44.99

Good thing this is set is ugly as heck or else I'd be broke.

First impressions ...... disappointing :-( ..... maybe better when the sets are built !!!!!

Posted by Gandalf1 in United States, 08 Dec 2011 09:04

@The Green Brick Giant: It does have a few large pieces though.

@ytjedi: Seriously? Wow, you can get Hagrid's Hut for the same price, and it has a light brick and 4 minifigs, one of which is quite large.

I never buy Legos from Toy R Us partly because there isn't one close to me, and because I don't like there mark up pricing. However, I went to one the other day because my son wanted one of those small poly bag ninja sets that I thought was sold only at Toys R Us. When I went there I saw the new Ninjago sets and wanted to buy my son the $6.99 set. They had it marked up to $8.99. The $14.99 set they had marked up to $19.99. I decided to take the set I wanted to customer service and ask them if they did price match. They told me if I had an ad they would. So I showed them my iPhone and the price it sells for at Lego.com and they matched the price from Lego.com. So if you need to buy a set from Toys R Us, I recommend that you ask them if they price match. It worked for me.

Can't say I'm too impressed with the design of these sets, but I'm really liking the minifigures. I missed out on the last batwing set and I still don't have a Joker so I'm probably gonna go for this set.

Posted by gunoz in United States, 08 Dec 2011 12:48

For anyone in the area the Toys R Us in Carle Place, NY had good stock on every DC set this morning except the Batcave.

4526 Batman
4527 Joker
4528 Green Lantern
6858 Catcycle
6862 Power Armour Lex
6863 Batwing & Joker
6864 Batmobile & Two-Face

Posted by Toyz4me in United States, 08 Dec 2011 13:27

Oh yeah? How about $45.99 for it in the stores! Yup! That's what it came up as, couldn't put it back fast enough.
The catcycle was out too...rang at $20.99.

Waited so long for superheroes...guess another month will not matter much )))

Happy Holidays fellow collectors!!

All I know is TRU is getting out of control.. See the Yellow cargo train for 200 and a lot of other sets massively marked up.. it is crazy and I think some at TRU has really lost their marbles....

TRU is getting totally out of control. They have new city car and camper set for $27.99....a $19.99 MSRP set! $8 mark-up on a $20 set!?!? http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12152075

Posted by CapnRex101 in United Kingdom, 08 Dec 2011 18:12

Us over here in the UK have yet to see a single 2012 set! Normal service has resumed then after last year.

Posted by Isabella and Lego Liker in United States, 08 Dec 2011 18:13

At least the small green car is only $1 for the markup, that is more normal of them. They also have the racers still at $9.99.

Posted by Berrybrick in United States, 08 Dec 2011 18:50

legomatt-Who said late? I said latER in 2012.

Posted by legomatt in United Kingdom, 09 Dec 2011 00:57

@Berrybrick: Yep, i hear you. The thing is, the vast majority of the general population don't get the new releases of a particular year until the subsequent Christmas period, for example, Pirates of the Carib, or Star wars 3 Clone Wars, released this year, will largely be bought for christmas gifts (sure there'll be adults, some birthdays, and some pocket money savers buying through the year, but those figures will pale into nothing compared to the vast numbers getting it this christmas), and the knock-on effect of this is that most people play those game the following year (Jan thru Feb).

If lego were to get better organised to capitalise on the marketing these games do for a theme, they'd develop sets alongside TT games, sharing designs (especially as ingame models are often the thing we'd like to see Lego do - just compare Black Pearls), then have the game released first, say september for christmas (along with some teaser kits), and the main body of actual sets to follow in spring & summer waves, to ride the peak of demand. Currently lego get it the wrong way round, and a theme fizzles out by the time the game is played.

But anyway, just like everyone else, i'll be buying for the figs (largely as there doesn't appear anything much else in the sets to get them for sadly). Of course, Lego is currently worshipping the minifig to the detriment of set design in general, so nothing new in that. So I will not be surprised if some sets do fail to sell - as non-AFOL parents DO need to see value for their money, and THEY do think a small box = small value.

Will be interesting in any case. Bring em' on!

Regarding the TRU Markups, convential wisdom and/or hope suggests that they've pushed everything in light of the month-long holiday BOGO 50%. When you factor in the markups, the BOGO isn't much of a sale at all.

I went over there last week to grab a Pteranadon Attack and Garbage Truck-- should have came to $30 USD plus tax... with the markups it came to just under $39, giving me the amazing holiday savings of ONE DOLLAR!

This is obviously a gimmick meant to exploit the soccer moms and casual buyers... what we really have to look out for is whether or not the sales GO BACK DOWN after Christmas. If not, I'll likely boycott TRU altogether.
