Introducing LEGO ReBrick

  • Introducing LEGO ReBrick

Posted by Huw, 16 Dec 2011 07:58. Filed under LEGO.com.

Here's another press release from LEGO concerning the 'soft' launch of ReBrick.  I've been involved in this project for some time, and I suspect many of you have too during its open beta phase. From today, anyone can use it.

    ---

The success of the LEGO Group in recent years owes a lot to the dedication and love of the LEGO® brick by consumers and the fan community. ReBrick is a step further along the road of collaboration with LEGO consumers, but now with focus on sharing and celebrating what consumers create with LEGO bricks. We hope that ReBrick will be a source of inspiration for everyone in the LEGO community.

    What is LEGO ReBrick?

    • ReBrick is a social media platform where users over the age of 13 can share and discuss user-created LEGO content online.
    • ReBrick users can bookmark LEGO content from sites, such as Flickr and YouTube and existing LEGO community sites, and have a discussion via comments at the ReBrick hub. It will not be possible to upload content to the ReBrick site, so the traffic will be sent back to the community.
    • ReBrick is LEGO Group owned, but the selection of content rests primarily with the user community
    • ReBrick will both serve as a social bookmarking hub for easy navigation of the latest and coolest user-developed LEGO content, but it will also enable this content to be pushed to 3rd party social media platforms, LEGO fan sites and other LEGO sites by the users.
    • ReBrick is not commercial and won’t be used by the LEGO Group to market LEGO products.

ReBrick amplifies the vibrant LEGO community

There are millions of articles, videos and photos featuring LEGO bricks on the web, and more show up every day. Some fan-made videos on YouTube get millions of views within a few days. Clearly, LEGO fans are already out there sharing and chatting away big time.

But the fragmentation makes it difficult for the casual LEGO fan or those just entering the LEGO hobby to find the content they might be looking for or just browse for inspiration. It is our hope, that ReBrick will make it easier to navigate, enjoy and be inspired by the awesome content created by LEGO fans and also facilitate new connections between people in the LEGO community. ReBrick acts as a hub, gathering the most interesting, off-the-wall and astonishing creations in one place so that fans everywhere can join the conversation.

    Releasing control

Millions of user-created LEGO objects are already driving thousands of conversations each day. ReBrick will let the users moderate themselves, with little involvement from The LEGO Group. A set of simple House Rules will ensure that the core values that most consumers associate with the LEGO brand will set the tone for content and conversation. We believe that the consumers themselves know and appreciate these values and will uphold them.

    ”Always in Beta” mindset

From the early stages, the LEGO user community has contributed to ReBrick, influencing the way it works, the design and the house rules. The LEGO community will continue to be closely involved in the further development of ReBrick. ReBrick will continue to be co-developed with the LEGO community adding new features on a regular basis.

I've never heard of this website before, it's a great idea and I'll be checking it out often.

Just registered and it seems that the username I created for my lego shopping account, which I created years ago and can't edit, is now the public username I'll be stuck with for rebrick. Great.

Now I've registered Im presented with a blank screen, no instructions, nothing which obviously does anything. Not very impressive. Im sure there's probably some good functionality there but the user experience seems weak so far.

When I'm logged into LEGO.com, it presents me with a sign-up page on every page I go to. But if I'm logged out, I can see the rest of the site. Not great, frankly. :/ And registering requires an e-mail. Since I don't do many creations these days, I won't register. The fewer e-mails I send in order to register, the better. :/

Actually, this is pretty disappointing. When I found out about this, I hoped this would become a new LEGO Message Board. Instead, it's something completely different. :/ When the name "Rebrick" was unveiled, the presence of "Re" made me think of a new MB... :/

This is the former Octopus project, correct?

EDIT: Let me rephrase this, this was the project CODENAMED Octopus, right?

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 16 Dec 2011 11:46

Yes, octopus and shine were project code names.

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 16 Dec 2011 11:49

@Huw: "Shine"? The only codename I knew of was "Octopus"... :P

I've created a new account, and the next stage asks me to upload a profile image, enter my websites, and write about myself, but when I click on 'Create Profile' at the bottom, nothing happens. Tumble weed might as well roll across the screen.
First impression isn't looking too positive for me...

^ That's exactly what happens when I try to create a profile.

You only need the short description and your email adress.

So LEGO ID is not my ReBrick ID? Lame.

UPDATE 1: Clicked on 'Create Profile', nothing happens. Thanks a lot LEGO. Pfft.

UPDATE 2: Okay, so you have to right click and hit "Open" for the page to load. I hope this changes, because it is a major turn-off.

Well, Lego is making an attempt to host to TFOL's. I still haven't checked it out, but I'm not sure I want to by the posts :P

I don't see how it will have an advantage over the other sites. I feel that TLG jumped into the bandwagon a bit too late.

Posted by disneywizard in United States, 16 Dec 2011 19:14

I agree...looked around rebrick and not seeing the advantage either...I think I'll stick to going directly to BRICKSHELF, MOCPAGES and FLICKR

Posted by AETerry in United States, 16 Dec 2011 19:52

I'd like to join it, expand the on-line communities I'm a part of for LEGO.

But I'm having the problems just as others have commented on about creating an account. When I go to click "Create Profile" I get nothing and that's after filling in everything.

I've even tried to use my LEGO ID and still nothing.

Jeez, all these problems seem similar to Cuusoo probs.

If you try to contact them do you have to sign up with some cowboys called "getsatisfaction"?

Posted by Be-Burger in Israel, 17 Dec 2011 04:52

It won't let me sign in... I press "Create Profile" after entering my email, websites, and 'about me' and yet it does nothing but make a red box around the 'about me'?? Why?

Hi Guys, Peter from LEGO here.

We’re trying to replicate the problem you’re mentioning, but we’re not having any success. Could I get you to send us a screen dump of where you get stuck, and we’ll try to correct the problem.

You can get hold of us on ReBrick@LEGO.com

Guys, like I said in my previous post, right click 'Create Profile', and hit 'Open'! That's how it worked for me.

Posted by Be-Burger in Israel, 20 Dec 2011 13:06

It worked now, for some reason.

Posted by PeterEsp in Denmark, 21 Dec 2011 04:42

Hi Guys,

Peter from LEGO here again.

We've managed to solve the problem, so you should be able to sign-up without any challenges.

Thanks for the feedback - and let us know if there are other problems.

/Peter
