New feature: My Friends

  • New feature: My Friends

Posted by Huw, 31 Jan 2009 03:57. Filed under Brickset.

Shortly after the new site was launched, hitokiri in Moscow contacted me to suggest that I add a feature to make it easier for him to keep track of his fellow doublebrick members' collections here on Brickset. While it's always been possible to see them via individual members profiles, there wasn't an easy way of doing so without lots of clicking around.

So, my solution to this is a new tab: 'My Friends' . On this page you can search the Brickset user database, find your friends then mark them so they appear in your list of friends. Once in the list you can click on links to view their reviews, their collection or thier wants list. You can also see who has marked you as a friend.

This is an opt-in system: if you want people to know more about you, such as your location and real name, so you can be found in the list, you'll need to enter information in your profile and if you want to share your collection with others, tick the 'Allow Brickset users to view my collection' box at the bottom.

I've also added some new fields to the profile page allowing you to enter the URLs of your Brickshelf, flickr and MOCPages galleries.

I hope you find this useful. As usual your feedback will be appreciated.

Should be interesting. I'll try it out when I've got some time on my hands. I just got my new Bricklink order. Woo!

Posted by Perigrin in United States, 31 Jan 2009 07:19

Don't get too complicated like with the homepage!

Posted by TheLegoBrick in Philippines, 31 Jan 2009 07:23

I do not like how it shows which country you are in :(

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 31 Jan 2009 07:51

@TheLegoBrick: why not, as a matter of interest? It determines that from your IP address.

I still won't let anybody contact me, though.

Hmm I'm just going to have get used to it, the my friends tab sounds like a good idea.

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 31 Jan 2009 08:23

Huw:

What is the "other lego websites" mean?

Does it mean if you're on other lego websites with an account?

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 31 Jan 2009 08:29

@jonbuddy, use it for anything you like -- some people have their own personal website, like our Dr. S who runs http://www.tabletownonline.co.uk

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 31 Jan 2009 08:37

Ah, I'll use it for "other lego websites" I have an account on.

Also, Huw, can you give me a list of Brickset admins/moderators? I'd like to know the staff and befriend them.

Posted by Smallsam99 in United States, 31 Jan 2009 08:42

How can you add your moc's from brickset and etc.?

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 31 Jan 2009 08:44

I was curious why you are up so early, then I remembered you are in London, which is 5 hours ahead of me. (I live in the Eastern United States).

Anyone can mark me as a friend.

Posted by legolover94 in New Zealand, 31 Jan 2009 15:46

This is a great idea, Huw. I'm definitely going to use this new feature!

Posted by galacticlord in United Kingdom, 31 Jan 2009 15:51

Good idea,
I look forward to testing it out.

Posted by HobbesFan08 in United States, 31 Jan 2009 17:46

hey huw... i dont know if this will be a problem but people, including me, can be friends with your test account. When you test new features will this give us "previews"? Or is your test account your first account to see if the membership works or to bcc yourself.

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 31 Jan 2009 18:37

HobbesFan08:

Now that you mention it, what is HuwTest for anyway? I'm going to befriend the account.

Posted by softybones in United States, 31 Jan 2009 20:45

Posted by mvila09 in United States, 31 Jan 2009 23:05

@softybones,
Good News,I'm now your friend.

Posted by mvila09 in United States, 31 Jan 2009 23:16

@jonbuddy

I was wondering the same thing.Oh,I almost forgot I have you as my friend.

Posted by apustow in United Kingdom, 01 Feb 2009 03:57

I like it

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 01 Feb 2009 08:54

softybones:

Your wish is granted. I am now your friend.

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 01 Feb 2009 09:32

Eerex Sweeher, why do you want 314 sets? That's a little over 1 1/2 times as much sets I own and want!

176 (I own) + 14 (I want) = 190

314 ÷ 190 = 1.6526315789473684210526315789474 (a little over 1 1/2 times) (Note: I did this on a calculator)

Posted by HobbesFan08 in United States, 01 Feb 2009 09:34

Huw, are you trying to make this in a way the first social site with lego referance? Lol. Add a chat room.

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 01 Feb 2009 09:53

HobbesFan08:

That means Moderation 101. But, if it works out, we can trust each other not to say anything offensive.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 01 Feb 2009 10:08

@HobbesFan08, yes sort of, more like first LEGO reference with social stuff added in so if anyone has any suggestions about where to take it next let me know. A discussion forum is unlikely to happen, but I won't rule it out completely.

Posted by littlelegoluke in United States, 01 Feb 2009 10:10

HobbesFan08: I like the idea of a forum. That way we have a place to put are random information.

BTW: i added u as a friend Hobbes and anyone can add me

Sorry i guess no discution forum.

Posted by mvila09 in United States, 01 Feb 2009 11:26

Hey Huw.....I know this is random but can you add avatars to brickset?I think it will be cool next to the my friends thing.

Posted by comandercody654 in United States, 01 Feb 2009 11:30

Yes avatars would be a cool addition!

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 01 Feb 2009 11:35

littlelegoluke:

That would be fun to make avatars.

Posted by Retsnom Kcor in United States, 01 Feb 2009 14:35

@ jonbuddy Most of the sets I want are sets that came out before I was born, such as classic space sets. I only have six classic space that I am aware of and I Want more. Besides That 300 and something that I want is nothing compared to the 600 something that I own! Add onto that three Mega Blox sets(Groan), a K'nex rolar coaster, Two models I made on LDD and bought off of factory and you need a bigger house. (I did that in my head!) And yes Huw, avatars would be cool!

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 01 Feb 2009 14:39

Sorry, I won't be adding avatars, signatures, emoticons or any of the other clutter that makes Eurobricks and other forums so unusable and unreadable. Keep it plain, simple and functional, those are my aims.

Posted by Retsnom Kcor in United States, 01 Feb 2009 14:49

Okay Huw, whatever you think you should do, It's your site after all

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 01 Feb 2009 15:57

Eerex Sweeher:

I get it now.

Posted by Da_LegoBuilder in United States, 01 Feb 2009 16:39

I'll be anyone's friend! I mostly added people who I have contacted by email a while ago.

Posted by Republic Commando Sev in United States, 01 Feb 2009 17:52

Thanks HuW! I like it so far!
I'm sorry if this is already a part of it, (I haven't done too much with it yet) but could you add something in there, so you can see which people became your friends?
Sev

Posted by bluemoose in United Kingdom, 01 Feb 2009 18:04

Huw had implemented it already :-)

Under the friends tab is a link called "List people who have marked me as a friend".

Huw could you add a "my page" that would contain your personal info, you could leave a little discussion fourm :) and much more that i know you could think of. It would be a great way to express your "Lego Personality" ;)

Lastly...

hehe...

Posted by Retsnom Kcor in United States, 01 Feb 2009 20:12

@Hobbesfan08 I don't think Huw will be doing much more with the site for now, as he said earlier he wants to "Keep it plain, simple and functional". I think we should be happy with what we've got. And also, those are from last years comic-con, just so you know.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 02 Feb 2009 02:22

Actually I will be doing a lot to the site, but nothing that clutters it up.

Posted by TheLegoBrick in Philippines, 02 Feb 2009 06:30

yay the random sets is back.

Posted by Retsnom Kcor in United States, 02 Feb 2009 06:40

@ Huw Oh

@ TheLegoBrick Yeah I just noticed that

Posted by water jedi 17 in United States, 02 Feb 2009 22:39

thanks for the new feature, i once thought up of the same concept but forgot it. something that could be added the URL tab could be your own website page, that would be most appreciated, and can we be frieds with moderators or just brckset members.
@ everybody: feel free to invite me as a friend, though i am a busy person and may not respond immediately :)

Posted by vezon8764 in United States, 05 Feb 2009 17:14

Unfortunately, you need friends to have a need for My Friends. Since I have almost no friends here, I might not do anything with it. But if anybody wants to join my Bioniclub, e-mail me.
Note: you have to allow e-mails back to join my Bioniclub.

Posted by Jon_Brick in Canada, 07 Feb 2009 11:57

be my friend

Posted by Bran-don-jin in United States, 08 Feb 2009 21:01

Wow, what a cool feature!
Soon we'll have forums!

Posted by Rvila2133 in United States, 11 Feb 2009 18:30

Yah Bran-don-jin I agree with you I think now the feature for having friends may give people the chance to talk to people they know
