    Minecraft fans did it, now it's YOUR turn!

    The western theme from 1996/7 was incredibly popular but also very short lived. Wouldn't it be great if it were to make a return? And wouldn't it be great if it consisted of modular buildings that were designed to fit together like the current modulars?

    This Cuusoo submission by Eurobricks member marshal_banana is exactly that and it looks superb. You can see more pictures at Eurobricks.

    Brickset is teaming up with Eurobricks to see if we, the online LEGO community, can get it to LEGO Review status at Cuusoo by achieving 10,000 supporters. If the Minecraft community can do it for their chosen model, so can we!

    All you have to do is go to the Cuusoo site and click on the big green 'support' button. If you don't already have an account there you'll need to create one but it only takes a minute or so to do.

How many parts is that MOC? They're certainly not going to approve a set that is that HUUUUGE, they'd have to do another whole line of "western" to get that many buildings out.

^ i think the concept is a modular series. the above picture would likely be 4-5 different sets - 1 per building, like the modulars.

As someone who has worked with Universal Licensing on bringing out official products, I can assure you that Universal would have nothing against the Back to the Future properties being created in Lego. They'd just ask for their regular licensing % on each set sold. We're even supporting it on the (soon-to-relaunch) official Back to the Future web site: http://www.backtothefuture.com/

So far I have voted for a Leaning Tower of Piza and a Piano. I would love to vote for the larger stuff, like the Western Town, but I feel committed to buying it if it did come out and I did. (Wow that's a weird sentence) And I feel a weight of responsibility, when asked "How much would you pay", to get the figure right, right? So, in a round-about way, I'm asking for "PIECE COUNTS" people.

This is the first project I voted on. I really want to see more sets that aren't licensed themes, and as fun to build as the modular building series. Having a non-licensed idea win is really what the cuusoo is all about, really.

A revival of the western theme would be great, particularly if it had the detail and scale of the modular theme. I'd especially love to see western railroad sets.

I saw this the Western theme last year and voted on it right away! It looks like a lot of fun and well put together. To me, certainly more interesting than all the City modulars kicking around, of which I have none and never likely will.

I hope they add stage coaches, trains, telegraph stations, ranches and cavalry forts to it all as well. Hrm... now I better go plan the extension to the house to try and fit this all in :-)

I am 1965, and the total is still rising. Perhaps this is a result of hypersensitivity, but I worry about the gut reaction of TLG officials when they see a building with a prominent "GUNS" sign. Clearly, this could be adjusted, but will it unnecessarily disconcert them? I guess there is only one way to find out--keep voting!

Without doubt a fantastic model and talented builder. HOWEVER, the problem I have with voting is that in all reality I would have no means or intention of buying the set. So by voting I would be doing exactly what happened with Minecraft, voting to be part of a movement (and in loyalty to Brickset). If however Lego took this as a sign of support to bring back the general Western theme, then I'd be all for it.

A couple of points.

Do I like this idea? yes I do, and I would vote, but the fact that the way to get a theme idea through is basically through cajoling large amounts of people to go along with one idea is sort of defeating the object of this scheme for me. I felt exactly the same about minecraft. I guess its a flaw in the system.

Another important point, is that there is no way lego would make a gun store as part of a modular set of buildings (as per one of the buildings in the attached picture).

Wouldn't it be good if we could come up with a new idea not already done before? I was hoping for something along the lines of Romans. In the various minifig series, the Spartan and The Roman have consistently been the most popular figures with best sell on values. Surely this shows there is a market here?

CUUSOO isn't the perfect system but I like the visibility it can give to our hobby outside of the LEGO world. This Western town set is brilliant and it would be a great ambassador of the best AFOLs can do today.

There is just one thing that bothers me with this article - I'm the author of the "Winchester/Shaun of the Dead" project on the site and I don't understand why so many people (incl. the author of the post) seems to be believe that potential Licensed themes do not stand a chance on the platform. It's obvious that LEGO is going down this road with the numerous licensed lines coming out so where is the problem? Gathering the necessary support is incredibly difficult as it is so please don't shut us down like that!
CUUSOO is about finding markets to new products - all projects will go trough the same review process, licensed or not. After all it's only a matter of finding an agreement between all parties involved.

I use CUUSOO to voice my opinion, to show LEGO what I like as customer. I voted on quite a lot of projects, and I will not buy all of them, but it should give LEGO a rough idea of what the community wants. This includes several of the 'theme'-projects at CUUSOO (which aren't aimed at one specific MOC).

Whether licenses or references to guns form a problem for LEGO, doesn't interest me as customer. I only show what I'd like to see, and it's up to LEGO to decide what to do with it.

As for the Roman theme suggestion, I'd love it, but so far, CUUSOO doesn't seem to have a good project for it. Create something amazing and I'll definitely add my support.

I hadn't really thought of it that way. So it's a good point. I guess my fear was lego responding to a perceived demand (ie Minecraft) to find out that in reality it just won't sell (that's my fear, it may not be the reality).

2309! I was just reading through the CUUSOO terms of service and there it says "LEGO CUUSOO is designed for you to submit your own new and original ideas to be considered as potential LEGO products. Since “bring back” projects are links to retired products the LEGO Group owns, they aren’t original or new and aren’t appropriate for CUUSOO. We will be contacting owners of “bring back” projects and removing them over the course of the next week."

Won't this be an issue for this particular project? Because we already had a Western theme, just not with modular buildings...

@Huw, it's not up to us to decide what chances a project has to become reality, that's up to LEGO. We, as customers, only tell LEGO what we'd like to see :)

Who would have thought LEGO would ever come with a Minecraft set? :P
If enough people want it, it would be silly if LEGO doesn't supply that part of the market :P

@iElkie, removing the 2nd place project would probably upset the community and I doubt people would still take CUUSOO seriously. :P

@iElkie - No, that comment about 'bring back' projects was due to the huge number of projects that cropped up with just a stock image of an old lego set - the monorail sets for example - and nothing else. This is an entirely new design, new concept (western modular not just western) and a theme that was very under-done.

I'm farily sure if not certain that entirely new designs within existing product ranges would be exactly the sort of thing that TLG would like. After all, they've done space, space police, aliens, ufo's, police, fire, nasa, arctic, underwater, western, post office, cargo etc etc. There aren't many 'themes' left that you could come up with that Lego haven't touched on before.

As an aside Cuusoo is a horribly designed site. there is somewhere a page that lists the most supported projects in order - I've been there before - but for the life of me can't find it now.

Just hit the search button without any terms to search for, and you'll end up in the total list of all projects. From there, you have a button to sort by "most supported".

I agree Cuusoo is badly designed though :P

@Huw - Odd that you mention the pub/alcohol theme of the Winchester but actively support the modular western that includes both a Saloon and a gun shop! Personally I prefer the western set too (not only beautifully done but also incredibly playable) but I also hope Lego aren't too concerned. With SW and some of the not so recent pirates/kingdoms (and i'm sure other) themes Lego do seem to have relaxed there stance on weapons and scary sets etc from the old space days when the closest thing we had to a weapon was a torch or a loud hailer!

Supported, as well as the Legend of Zelda theme (huge fan of the games), the Haunted House (anything for more architecture builds that sit between Pirates and City historically, and I love spooky stuff), and the fall-colored leaf pack (omfg please). Although, if they do Rivendell from LotR, that might produce some fall foliage, so long as it is from the Ring Trilogy and not the Hobbit movies, when I expect it will be greener. But I'd rather get leaves in a pack rather than have to buy licensed sets with 4-5 bits in them each.

Piece counts and MSRP on the build description pages would be a great help.

I'm currently supporting Mercy General City Hospital, Back to the Future - DeLorean Time Machine, and Modular Western Town. If the Mercy General City Hospital and Modular Western Town are made into sets I think the majority of Brickset users would be broke or in serious debt upon their release because these are MONSTER sets. Easily the two would be the largest sets ever...

@Huw & atkinsar - I don't meant to sound like I'm complaining over the fact that a project got more attention than my own because I am truly glad this project got such a great publicty. However, if you intend to take this up as a quest in the name of the AFOL world I urge you please to reconsider how you present it. Stating that this project stands better chances of getting done as compared to other ones solely on your speculation that potentially licensed sets are more difficult to sell is totally unfair.

As far as a Roman theme goes, I think it would be very popular with AFOL's but not so much with kids. Most AFOL's have seen Galadiator and 300 but I doubt most 8 year olds have. Most little kids want to be a knight/damsel but I didn't know too many kids growing up that wanted to be a Roman soldier/gladiator. I for one would buy it but I doubt most kids would.

I agree that we should make this a sticky so those who don't check the site everyday will see it and can vote.

I also thought the Space Marines was a great idea!

Thank you for your amazing support. I think Cuusoo is a fantastic tool for us - the LEGO Fans.

If we manage to drawn together and pushing outstanding projects and ideas, like this, then we've the chance to get some really interesting new sets, new IPs and parts for everyone. But we have to use this tool together to make things happen.

That the community has chosen my project is thrilling and exciting. That's a big, big compliment.

There are some really good ideas on Cuusoo still under the radar. So go over to Cuusoo, explore these projects, vote for them and most important have fun! Thanks again you guys are awesome!

I can understand the questions asking why this model was picked by so many AFOL sites over some of the other fabulous entries. However, this model is really incredible and deserves it 100%, as soon as I can figure out what my password is I'm going to login and vote. It has the quality of a modular set, with open backs that a kid from the 80's like me loves for the play value, great interiors and accessories, it's just rocks!

I think what people are really asking is why haven't all of you voted for some of the other fabulous entries? The Shaun of the Dead model is also incredible... as is an awesome food truck that every LEGO City fan should vote for, but so far it only has about 70 votes. Those are just two that come to mind... but there are so many more.

I challenge you all to search with an empty search box (hit enter without entering a search term), sort by 'most supported,' and page through the first 100 or so entries. There are definitely some great ones that deserve more support than they've gotten.

Get out and vote, not just for this incredible entry, but for all of the many incredible entries out there!

Thanks everyone for your feedback on this initiative. Getting the community to push one particular model is a bit like Cuusoo itself: an experiment.

Who knows whether we'll reach 10,000 supporters, and who knows whether it'll pass 'LEGO review'? Unless we try this we just won't know.

There are a lot of great models at Cuusoo all worthy of everyone's support and it's great to see that in addition to voting for this model a lot of you are looking round and voting for others.

If this experiment is a success we push other models in future, but I believe we have to start somewhere and focus our attentions on one particular one first to see what's possible.

Oh, and in response to criticism about my comment on models based on licenced properties, I have taken time to read some of the comments over at Cuusoo and realise that it was misguided, so I have removed it.

For what its worth, i think its a great idea - although as a tactic perhaps if it was over used in the future it may just annoy Lego.

I also think the set chosen is perfect as a first model to push/test the waters.

1 its a great looking model.
2 its an under used theme from lego.
3 its got no licensing head aches attached (whilst they don't discourage licensed ideas it is just an additional step and another group of people/companies that have to be in agreement and take their %age)
4 the modular nature means that it could be started off as a single small(ish) set
5 its both playable for the younger lego fans and beautiful for the afols. A large chunk of the other non-licensed projects are more a display piece than a play thing.

Here is what they said.

?"Congratulations on all of the support! This is an incredibly detailed and fun project. A Western approach to the modular town series could very well become a hit. Since you are proposing a series of products, keep in mind that we will only produce one for starters. Can you show more detail of the one you think would be the best model to kick off a potential series?

I think a lot of people don't check all the websites every day. And as many have noted they don't want western so they aren't going to vote for it. We will just keep getting minecraft sets and the service will be useless to all AFOLs.

@chesirecat, CUUSOO is relatively new, I don't think it's well known in the community yet...

@iElkie, I do agree this topic could be bumped a few times, but I think the interval needs to way longer than every few days. It's of little use to see the same message every few days. I think an interval of a few weeks is more effective.

It's not a race against the clock, no need to rush this :)

I'm not a fan of westerns, but I did vote for it because it is such a beautiful creation. Plus, if they made something like this, it would be filled with great parts which MOCers would love. Not to mention, do you want LEGO Cuusoo to be known for Minecraft, or an awesome set like this? That reason alone should be enough to earn it some votes from those on the fence.

i was unable to vote. It requires you to register, but the controls for entering birthdate are not working, so there is no way to register and thus vote.
