New airline-special set for 2012

  • New airline-special set for 2012

Posted by Huw, 19 Mar 2012 15:41. Filed under New sets.

We first caught a glimpse of this at LEGO World in Copenhagen in this picture and there was speculation that it was this year's airline promotional set.

Now, holodoc has found evidence to confirm this: it's listed on the German TUIfly.com shopping page, priced €16. However it doesn't seem to be possible to actually buy it yet.

There's no set number shown, and I can't see it listed at BrickLink yet, so I'll have to wait until we know what it is before I can add it to the database.

Update: we've heard that it'll be available from 1st April from various airlines.

nice! Can't wait to get hold of it!

Posted by Matthew in United Kingdom, 19 Mar 2012 15:56

Is it just me, or is there no 'add to cart' button?

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 19 Mar 2012 15:58

It's missing for that item for some reason.

Posted by IndianaJones597 in United States, 19 Mar 2012 16:11

Looks good though, Hopefully it can come into stores

Posted by Matthew in United Kingdom, 19 Mar 2012 16:34

^ I'm afraid that's highly unlikely. These sets are always exclusive to in-flight and airline website sale. It's very possible other airlines will get it though.

Posted by Nesquik in United Kingdom, 19 Mar 2012 16:42

Not bad.

Posted by neomonkey in United States, 19 Mar 2012 17:25

For someone living in the US, what methods have people used to get their hands on previous sets?

Posted by brankell5566 in Canada, 19 Mar 2012 17:48

^ Bricklink, eBay, or travelling with that specific airline. Though it is kind of expensive just for a LEGO set.

Posted by grogall in Germany, 19 Mar 2012 17:51

I will look into it tomorrow!

Posted by Matthew in United Kingdom, 19 Mar 2012 17:52

^^ 16 Euros? I think that's very reasonable, particularly as the 2011 one was £19.99 GBP.

Posted by Nerd in United States, 19 Mar 2012 18:07

It's been pulled. The BrickSet Effect strikes again!

Posted by sarlacc98 in United Kingdom, 19 Mar 2012 18:26

the plane looks kinda weird IMO

Posted by LegoCity578 in United States, 19 Mar 2012 18:27

Its very ugly. You even call that a plane?

Posted by Savage_Steel in United Kingdom, 19 Mar 2012 18:34

Nick is desperate for this! Seems a good price to me. though shipping will bump it up a lot

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 19 Mar 2012 18:41

FlyBE carry LEGO sets and allow online ordering, http://www.flybeshopping.com/childrens-gifts.html, but as you can see they still have last year's. Give it time and it'll be easily available from sources like this.

Posted by LuvKernow in United Kingdom, 19 Mar 2012 18:50

It's not a plane, it's a glider.

Posted by GothamConstructionCo in United Kingdom, 19 Mar 2012 18:50

Cute little set!

Posted by WolfboyTheMasterofTheSword in United States, 19 Mar 2012 19:06

maybe this should come out on an american airline United perhaps? maybe Delta?

Posted by legolasher66 in United States, 19 Mar 2012 19:46

I used what I'm pretty sure is the same technique they used for the folding wings in a flying plane/boat/car I built. It's cool to see Lego using the same one.

Posted by LCPTF8404 in United States, 19 Mar 2012 20:36

Aw man, its going to be one of those airline promotional sets. Now it will be impossible to get this set. Why can't they just release these sets on Lego.com or Toys R Us?

Posted by brankell5566 in Canada, 19 Mar 2012 21:01

^ If they did that the set won't be a promotional set and it won't be an exclusive.

Posted by TooMuchLEGO in United States, 19 Mar 2012 21:47

How coincidental- come back from Washington D.C. and the first thing that I spot is an article on a new plane set. :)

Posted by TBOC in United States, 19 Mar 2012 21:58

Kind of weird, but I really don't see myself buying it. Doesn't look too bad!

Posted by Leggo my LEGO in Canada, 19 Mar 2012 22:34

The car...eeehhh....but I like the trailer and the glider!

Posted by JohnnyB in United Kingdom, 19 Mar 2012 23:09

Not bad. It even has 2 minifigs. I like it & the spirit of it. I can see editing the wings so they're retractable.

I work for an Airline - we still have last years set - You can pick them up at discount in our shop in Corporate HQ (Still expensive though - Last years set is £13 Vs £15 on board our Aircraft) - I'll keep an eye out on our on-line material, it usually changes the end of march as a new season catalogue is brought in, and I'd expect that's when we will first see it.

Posted by Mequel De Vaughn in United States, 20 Mar 2012 07:33

Other then being unique this set looks terrible and is Broke...come on folks do better LEGO.

Posted by Gandalf1 in United States, 20 Mar 2012 08:25

^I think it's OK. Really, I don't exactly see what's so bad about it, and I don't see anything so good about it either.

Posted by vynsane in United States, 20 Mar 2012 10:21

I think it looks rather cool. I'll always welcome another one of those windscreens (the one on the glider), love that shape!

Posted by bricksan in United Kingdom, 20 Mar 2012 12:30

@ The solitary dark would you be willing to get them for people as I would really like one :)

Posted by oldfan in United States, 20 Mar 2012 13:59

I was fortunate enough to travel internationally several times over the last few years, and I picked up all the promo sets I could from the duty-free cart. My observation is that all the sets have some quirky design feature compared to the contemporary System sets; maybe TLG uses these promotions to try something different on a limited scale, either for fun or to convince their airline partners that they really are offering something different?

One set that I purchased on a flight, set 7214, was offered for sale in LEGO shop at home a couple of years later, so I guess there's always hope that leftovers will be available (but then again, it was just that one time...).

As my dad was a commercial pilot, I have a fondness for the original airport sets and try to collect all the different planes and support craft that TLG put out. These promo sets are around for resale, though a tad expensive on a per-piece basis. That 1973 Emirates Airliner set, though, is a really expensive and elusive beast...

Posted by Thomson & Thompson in Canada, 20 Mar 2012 17:03

Hopefully it will be available with Air Canada!

Posted by Leggo my LEGO in Canada, 20 Mar 2012 17:10

@Thomson

Me too! My dad is a mechanic there, maybe he could get one for me :P

Posted by brankell5566 in Canada, 20 Mar 2012 18:10

^^ Yes! Air Canada, WestJet and some other Canadian Airlines. But the food on the short-haul AC flights are ridiculously expensive.

Posted by RiggsBooBubs in Philippines, 20 Mar 2012 18:43

Would anyone know other international airlines that may also carry the exclusive airline sets?

Posted by legoninja0701 in United States, 20 Mar 2012 20:24

wow i like the glider ill be geting it for sure!

Posted by Rolyat24 in United States, 20 Mar 2012 21:32

Will it be with United? My dad's a flight attendant there, so it'd be easy to get a hold of...

Posted by Thomson & Thompson in Canada, 20 Mar 2012 22:38

Will be flying with AC after April first, so I hope to get it then.

Posted by voypro in United States, 20 Mar 2012 23:01

They should do a companion TSA screening set. Complete with a flawed humiliating scanner, and a white glove groping area for stubborn passengers that do not want to be irradiated.

Posted by Wagnerml2 in United States, 21 Mar 2012 11:40

Any of my mates across the pond who would like to return the favor for the Polys at cost, I could use 2 or 3 of these :)

Posted by Matthew in United Kingdom, 21 Mar 2012 13:25

^ I'll grab you some if TUIfly.com ship international (if they actually ship at all) or if any UK lines have them. Maybe we could trade for the 4867? (Did you send those parts for the Blacksmiths/Dobbys yet BTW?)

Posted by The solitary dark in United Kingdom, 22 Mar 2012 02:21

@ RJH As soon as they appear in our store I'll add a post telling everyone the In-store price. I'ts usually a 10% discount.

Hopefully this is not against the rules as its my employer not my site...
You'll be able to order direct possibly in the next couple of weeks from here:

https://www.highlifeshop.com/products/kids

Last years set is no longer listed, but I'll take a look in the staff shop on the 28th when I'm there. (I'm in Engineering and work off-base)

Posted by eiker86 in Norway, 22 Mar 2012 04:52

I'm getting 2 in May =D Can't wait. But i can't understand you did speculate about it being this year's airline promo. An designer said that when i took the picture.

April 1st??? Really??? Sure chains arent being yanked here?
