Brickset to expand to include clone brands

  • Brickset to expand to include clone brands

Posted by Huw, 01 Apr 2012 06:52. Filed under Brickset.

I'm always looking for ways to improve Brickset and while on vacation last week, I came to the conclusion that a way to do this would be to include clone brands in the database, such as Megabloks, Kre-O, Cobi, Character, Best Lock and so on. After all, the site is called Brickset.com and not LEGOset.com, right?

Many of these brands have licences that are popular among adults (e.g. Megabloks HALO, Character Building Dr Who, and Kre-O Transformers) while others produce models that LEGO fans can but dream of, such as the military models made by Cobi.

I plan to start adding them in the next week or so. I hope you're as excited as I am about this -- I'm sure many of you own some of these already and I suspect once I add them here many more of you will start to buy them.

WOW! Don't forget Stickle Bricks as well! I'll finally be able to keep track of my collection! ;-)

WOW, what a morning!
First, 10179 to be re-released, and now this awesome news to top it off.
I can't wait to see all the cool clone-brand sets here at Brickset!
Great stuff Huw.

Yup. And I am a unicorn... (:

Oh no! :'(, Worst news ever!. I thought this site was meant to be just LEGO ...

Posted by Redbullgivesuwind in United Kingdom, 01 Apr 2012 07:18

Oh yes i think so. I love mega bloks more than lego and so to merge it is a great idea. I think this site should deal with nothing but clone brands

Um, what month is it?

Posted by jengafett in United Kingdom, 01 Apr 2012 07:27

WHAT THE ****! Brickset CAN NOT do this! THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!

Posted by Bobszaar in United States, 01 Apr 2012 07:39

I'll accept it...under one condition. On the search tab, can you make sure to divide each brand (one for Lego, another for Mega Bloks, etc.), so as not to get too jumbled results?

April Fools!

I personally really dont want this to ruin brickset, and lots of people i think will agree with me, DONT DO IT!!!

Posted by legos4ever in United States, 01 Apr 2012 08:10

This is a real shame. Such a great site and now its soiled by this? AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I agree with rolomolo12345, padinc, yani777, jengafett, GlenRichards, and I hope your right brixton. THIS IS HORRIBLE! THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE! THIS......is sadly enough to make me leave blockset...

Posted by Kalhiki in United States, 01 Apr 2012 08:11

I advise putting an option where you could filter what sets you see. For instance, if someone really only cares about Lego, thy could filter out the other stuff. Kinda like with the site's news, if you know what I mean.
If this is or isn't an April Fool's Day prank, I'm fine. Personally, I only use this site for Lego, but if it did include other lines as well, I wouldn't mind.

Last year, you announced a forum on the same day, and I hoped it would come. It came. However, this is one thing I DEFINITELY DON'T want! I really do hope it's just an April Fools joke! Otherwise, I'll be furious! I don't ANY clone brands here! You don't even want to mention their NAMES!

I love Brickset and I love Lego.
I am afraid I am also a Lego purist.

If this happens please find someone else to report on news from Canada. As I will be leaving Brickset for good.

After all the upset about decreased quality of ABS and Chinese made lego I think this would be a no brainer.

Even if you do put Mega Bloks on this site... I still won't buy them (anymore), there is no need for Mega Bloks in my love for building. I admit, I did get some Mega Bloks Cars sets before they were made by Lego, though..........but have no plans to get any more at the moment.

Posted by rainstorm26 in United States, 01 Apr 2012 14:11

@Huw, why did you pull the China mfg story?

Posted by Brickarmor in United States, 01 Apr 2012 14:31

The Kreos are a fine build. They're not Legos (duh) nor are they even "competition." I bought three sets and have no complaints. Naively reading Huw's article I was first astounded at the enormity of the task he had posed for himself! But funny, yes.

Ha ha...brilliant AFD joke!

When I first saw the Mega Bloks logo, my sleep deprived brain refused to believe my eyes. I actually glanced up at the URL to make sure I was still on brickset.com. Still puzzled and now becoming alarmed, I read "looking for ways to improve Brickset...include clone brands in the database" and I thought, "WTF?!?"

It was only when I got to "after all this is called Brickset.com and not LEGOset.com" that I realized Huw was joking. Only thing missing was an "amirite?"

I'll be chuckling over this one for some time.

Last year on this day we had the announcement on the new brickset forums and while I was apprehensive about the benefits of such a forum it has proven useful. We should trust that the site admins know what they are doing and this will probably be the largest (one of very few) clone brand sites. All bricks are not created equal but every set deserves a page on brickset.

Posted by Brew75 in United States, 01 Apr 2012 17:50

Yup it's official! Everyone's gone completely INSANE! LEGO! LEGO! Even if you do add clone bricks I'll NEVER I REPEAT NEVER BUY THEM!!!!

I'm pretty sure it's an April fools joke. If not someone hacked Huw's aucount. If not either I'm leaving this junk heap.

Posted by legofanatic2414 in United States, 01 Apr 2012 18:14

Goodness, for a second this looked like a Youtube comments page. Aren't we all adults here? If not, then can we at least act like one? People, this may or may not be an April Fools joke. If it is not, than we shouldn't get into such a fuss. Huw and the moderators have made grand decisions in the past, have they not? I am sure, this decision will benefit Brickset in the future. Although, if it is a joke, then good work Huw! ;)

Posted by itsaturkey in United States, 01 Apr 2012 18:33

I wouldn't actually care as long as the news stayed Lego and the other brands were separated. But of course this is April Fools :) And just let me be devil's advocate for a minute. Just because Lego popularized bricks doesn't mean that no more brick based brands can be released. Is any Sci-Fi movie made after Star Wars a rip-off? Yeah, Lego is the best quality of them all, and I like Lego way more then any other brand, but that doesn't disqualify the other brands. I've gotten a few Megablock sets, and as far as the Halo sets go they are nothing like Lego. The figures aren't even close to minifigs, you can't say they're duplicates. I can't speak for other themes of Megablocks though.
P.S. Good joke Huw :P I realized it was April 1st then ran to the computer to see if you would do another prank! :P

Fantastic set-up for a joke- very convincing in the paragraph and presentation. In the rare chance that it is not a joke, it doesn't bother me- it's your website and you can do with it what you want. I'm just grateful that you are willing to have Brickset.

Someone mentioned Legos being sacred, I really like Legos, but if Legos are the center of my life, I may consider some re-examination.

^ Wow there, calm down. It's a April Fools. Look at the article, "I'm sure many of you own some of these already and I suspect once I add them here many more of you will start to buy them." :P C'mon, he's clearly being sarcastic. Also if it wasn't a April Fools he would have responded by now. But he prefers to let us jump in the swirling tornado of emotion while he laughs at our pathetic and humiliating comments :P Cruel Huw, cruel :P
And besides, it's his website, so don't call him a idiot if he's the one who created the website. He can make a My Little Pony page for all I care. And it's not hypocrisy, this is hardly a government, this is a informative, interesting and in my opinion amazing website, Huw has never steered us wrong before and he won't do it any time soon. Have some faith! :)

Posted by CharlieTheFunEngine in Australia, 01 Apr 2012 22:12

Please don't shout me down for this, but I would LOVE Brickset to include at least Mega Bloks as I collect the Thomas The Tank Engine theme they created after LEGO lost the license in 2009.

If this is not a joke, I'll be thrilled.

If it is a joke, I'll be hugely disappointed.

I like how itsaturkey put it: "Is any Sci-Fi movie made after Star Wars a rip-off?"

My passion is for inter-locking building blocks. Not a particular brand. Whichever brand makes the licences I want, I'll buy them.

Even it wasn't a joke it wouldn't bother me. I never did understand the hatred people have for other brands. If you don't like them, just don't buy them. While I do feel Lego designs are far superior, some of the bricks of some other brands are pretty good as well. It's just always been the designs of the sets IMO that are really lacking with the clone brands. I have some Halo stuff that I like very much.

Posted by Brew75 in United States, 03 Apr 2012 11:56
