April Fools!

  • April Fools!

Posted by Huw, 02 Apr 2012 02:45. Filed under Brickset.

As most of you guessed, a couple of yesterday's news articles were April Fools jokes:

    • I will NOT be soiling the pages of Brickset with clone rubbish. The only way they will ever appear here is 'over my dead body' :-)
    • LEGO will NOT be re-releasing the UCS Millennium Falcon, which is a shame, because I'd probably buy one this time if they did.

What other LEGO related AFs did you read on other sites? I found:

    Were there others?

I knew it! Haha nice one huw!

Posted by the_real_indy in United States, 02 Apr 2012 03:28

Ah, and what about the new *standard-minifig-sized* Hulk minifig that is posted on BrickHeroes.com and other sites? They did do some official rare non-helmeted alternative versions of Iron Man, so it's a real possibility! It would also really improve playability, since the big Hulk can't even fit in the cargo bay of the QuinJet! So was that a real first-of-the-month announcement, or a leak, or just an April Fools hoax? It looks like a totally legit "blurry-shot" from a dealer's catalog... Any intel on this?

Posted by yys4u in United States, 02 Apr 2012 03:32

I knew the adding of Clone Brands was an April's fools joke, since your so adamant about not allowing their discussion in the forum, but I was really hoping the UCS Falcon wasn't... :(

Posted by LostInTranslation in United Kingdom, 02 Apr 2012 03:49

^ I make it a policy to always assume Yellowcastle is fibbing, so was never in danger of believing the UCS Millennium Falcon story :-)

I rotated the VicLUG site: http://www.viclug.ca 90 degrees clockwise, and everytime you click the forum index link it would rotate it again:

You could log in, browse if you had the stomach and patience for it, though on a phone browser it was pretty hysterical. You would rotate the phone to to switch the orientation and the site would rotate away from you each attempt.

Never ceases to amaze me that people fall for some of these AF gags, and the emotions they stir up. I thought you may have needed to go into Police protection at one point over the clone brands prank Huw!

Posted by Si_Dorking_Surrey in United Kingdom, 02 Apr 2012 04:20

Nice one! I really enjoyed those :o)

Some peoples reactions were a bit much, but, hey, April fools! Guess they'll know for next year :)

Posted by Andhe in United Kingdom, 02 Apr 2012 04:32

Have to say I did fall for the Millenium falcon re-release... :p

How about a NSFW on the BrickChicks link?! Getting caught looking at lego is one thing...

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 02 Apr 2012 04:37

^ C'mon it's pretty harmless! I think the version of the American Beauty poster, http://www.movieposterdb.com/poster/76a9ee43/, is great :-)

Posted by goldfish in United Kingdom, 02 Apr 2012 04:47

it should read that 'Lego will not be re-releasing the UCS Millenium Falcon at this time'. I still think they will within the next 10 years.

Posted by richselby in United Kingdom, 02 Apr 2012 05:08

How many times have they re-released the Maersk ship? Maybe if they rechristened it the Maersk Millenium Falcon and coloured it sky blue it would have a better chance of being rereleased.

Brickipedia (http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/LEGO_Wiki) redid the homepage to make it seem like Brickipedia was a wiki dedicated to the small rectangular blocks typically made of fired or sun-dried clay. They also put out a notice stating that all articles were to be put into the category "Bricks", as that is what all the articles are about.

Another hoax : 10232 Lamborghini Murciélago over at TechnicBRICKs (http://technicbricks.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/1h2012-10232-exclusive-murcielago.html)

A shame, I would love it.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 02 Apr 2012 06:22

^ I missed that one -- that's brilliant, and a superb model too!

Posted by ejcmoorhouse in United Kingdom, 02 Apr 2012 06:46

I sure the mega blocks fan community, lol what am I saying there only fans are fans of halo. But i'm sure they can arrange the "over my dead body" bit.

Posted by JohnnyB in United States, 02 Apr 2012 06:59

The clone brick or mega blocks one was funny because when you look at the comments in the thread, obviously people don't even read other people's comments. Lol

Posted by legomoe74 in United States, 02 Apr 2012 07:24

The UCS Millennium Falcon one was a sick joke.

Posted by ben30024 in United States, 02 Apr 2012 07:36

at the time of these being posted, i actually believed them because i couldn't make much sense of things. i have the flu, and it's been messing up my brain

Posted by OracabessaGirl in Canada, 02 Apr 2012 07:42

Brilliantly done, Huw! I have to say that you did get me with the Millennium Falcon joke, until I read the comments. The adding clone brands to the db sent me on a roller coaster of confused emotions but I did figure it out in the end. I have to add that to my list of all time favourite AFD jokes. Another favourite, which is non-LEGO related, is the "Gmail Tap" joke: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KhZKNZO8mQ

The China article was an April Fool, but was removed.

The China article made me crazy for about 15 seconds.

Posted by shaase in Canada, 02 Apr 2012 11:07

I'm glad I have my UCS Millennium Falcon. Sorry for those who got excited over the re-release; but it could happen in the future

Posted by kwilder in United States, 02 Apr 2012 11:56

@ LegoCoastGuard: Thanks for clarifying re: the china post.

Posted by Brickarmor in United States, 02 Apr 2012 12:55

Man, that's too bad. I was ready to get into the spirit of things...

If Huw st--

Wait wait wait... (ahem)

IF HUW STARTS INCLUDING CLONE BRANDS ON BRICKSET, I-I-I'LL DISOWN MY CHILDREN, ABANDON MY PETS, TORCH THE HOUSE, AND AND AND VOTE FOR NEWT GINGRICH!!

Posted by Margot in United States, 02 Apr 2012 14:39

Why did the China article get removed? I actually thought I was done buying Legos!!! Good one. :-)

Posted by CamberbrickGreen in United Kingdom, 02 Apr 2012 15:21

Totally suckered for 5 mins:

*Disgusted at the clone brand catalogue plans.
*Planned to end collecting once China production started.
*The girlfriend wanted UCS Falcon for Christmas or birthday, told her, got her excited.... yep not happy about five minutes later! Doubt I could have afforded TLG price anyway...

How can we gets Huw back?!

Posted by KillDeer in Canada, 02 Apr 2012 15:35

@roguetrader1987 We have an entire year to plan.

Posted by swlego@hf in United States, 02 Apr 2012 17:10

I nearly had cardiac arrest when i heard the clone brands...thank goodness that isn't true...

Posted by the_real_indy in United States, 02 Apr 2012 19:02

Wow, evidently the *minifig-sized* version of Hulk is real, avail May 16-31... You can see it on BrickHeroes.com

Like I said, the troll-sized Hulk fig is excellent, but he can not even fit in the rear cargo bay area in the Quinjet!

Apparently, there is a chrome-silver TC-14 protocol droid, like an alternate silver C-3PO, avail May 4-5 too.

Im scarred for life from the last BrickChick pic...

Posted by TBOC in United States, 02 Apr 2012 22:10

You guys are real funny. I wish BZPower had a real good April Fools, like they have in the past few years, but alas... I din't really enjoy the Millenium Falcon one, but hey, I didn't have the $500 anyway.

Posted by CharlieTheFunEngine in Australia, 02 Apr 2012 23:15

Oh for goodness sake. The way people over-react about ANYTHING to do with clone brands is disgusting. Yes, LEGO was first, WHO CARES?! Of course, for basic bricks and city sets, I stick with LEGO, but when a license I want is elsewhere, I'll by it from them. Simple!

@ Carding - "I sure the mega blocks fan community, lol what am I saying there only fans are fans of halo." Please don't say that. Mega Bloks holds (or has held) plenty of brilliant licences in their time, which have been or went on to be LEGO themes - Harry Potter, Pirates Of the Caribbean, Marvel, Winne The Pooh, CARS and Thomas The Tank Engine just to name a few.

EDIT: Wow, just checked out the BrickChicks link. Saved the photos for "future reference".

Huw and company, if you wanted to be really devious next year, use your moderator powers to monitor the comments on each April Fools story. Quickly remove any comment people post which would serve to remind others about what day it is.

What about the "brick sorting" box?http://www.brothers-brick.com/2012/04/01/dave-lartigue-invents-automatic-lego-sorting-box/ (clink on the Dave ex machina link then click on the pdf link)

Posted by voypro in United States, 03 Apr 2012 20:53

Wow, do i sense the China prank article hit too close to home, they even delete my post about it... and there was nothing that should have caused its deletion. Oh well.

Posted by ben30024 in United States, 04 Apr 2012 12:50

yeah, they deleted my post about china too
next year, huw should team up with eurobricks and other LEGO fansites to build the world's biggest LEGO april fool's structure.(maybe a rounded-at-ends tube made of tan bricks? XD)
world record XD

On Classic-Castle Ben reversed the front page so you have to read it in a mirror. Also the weekly set review was of the Duplo Snow White set.

Iain at the Living Brick tried to get several of us to simultaneously post news that a set based on the old Atari Adventure game topped 10,000 at Cuusoo. Unfortunately I flaked as I was offline most of the weekend. It was posted on Iain's site and the Brothers Brick. Unfortunately the real news of the Shaun of the Dead Cuusoo kind of stepped on this prank Cuusoo.

BTW, if I was a single man I'd totally use the We-Brick service, particularly if the Brick Chicks were involved. ;)
