LEGO to release Olympic Team GB minifigs

  • LEGO to release Olympic Team GB minifigs

Posted by Huw, 13 Apr 2012 09:21. Filed under New sets.

Note the lack of a question mark in the title: LEGO IS releasing a set of Olympic collectable minifigs and we have a picture to prove it!

Here's all the information we have about them:

I am very pleased to announce that with the much anticipated arrival of the 2012 Olympics to the UK, LEGO is now able to add to this experience with it its very own series of Limited Edition Minifigures.

    • A special edition licensed LEGO Minifigures Olympic edition
    • 9 characters representing athletes in Team GB colours
    • Developed for the UK market and exclusively available in the UK

Grab the picture while you can, I may be asked to remove it at any time.

    (thanks to Redbullgivesuwind again!)

Huw, you could at least spell Redbull's name right! :P
Really looking forward to getting these, I love a good minifig frenzy.

Posted by Markey in Belgium, 13 Apr 2012 09:33

Those figs look nice, good to get a boxer in blue :)

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 09:33

^^ Trust you to spot a typo :-)

Posted by Thomson & Thompson in Canada, 13 Apr 2012 09:34

Is this a Series 9? The figures look great.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 09:36

Series 7.5 I think!

Posted by legobigbloke in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 09:37

There seems to be 9 minifigures shown both in the side by side photo and on the plastic packaging, not 8 as the text says....

Posted by legobigbloke in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 09:38

I also note that none come with any medals :) So it must be team GB

Posted by nerick9006 in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 09:38

9 figs !

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 09:40

^^ They are sporting medals on the packet by the looks of things.

^ You're right, the text I was sent does say 8 but there are 9.

Posted by Kez in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 09:42

Cool pics, I don't think this is series 9 but instead it says 9 to collect

Posted by Gregorovich in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 09:43

@legobigbloke: well on the packaging, they all have golds. Also, the weightlifter seems to come with a blue weight. Hopefully they will come with those accessories.

I'm really looking forward to these (although there's still Series 6 and 7 for me to get). I like the Gymnast, Judo and Archer figs best.

@Huw: do you know if these are exclusive to LEGO stores, or if they will be available through WHSmiths, Argos, etc..?

Posted by legobigbloke in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 09:47

^ odd they don't show all the accessories in the line-up shot, but the tennis player and archer have theirs.....so perhaps they do come with medals too. ( Seems they rushed the photo a bit really. )

Posted by Graysmith in Sweden, 13 Apr 2012 09:50

It's Christmastime for UK scalpers! Though I suppose that they're Team GB-themed may dampen the desirability a bit among non-British LEGO folk.

Posted by voyanuitoa in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 09:52

It's quite rare for a licensed set to have yellow minifigs nowadays. Also, how many minifigs are in each box?

Posted by Andhe in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 09:57

I've heard the rumours... I've seen the pictures... But is it just me that seems to think this is all a bit odd? I'm not crying FAKE! But if so they're the best customs I've seen in a while. Some nice pieces in different colours but not instant MUST HAVES for me. Strange that the packet is white as well, so soon after series 6.

Posted by spency13 in United States, 13 Apr 2012 10:05

Only in the UK.... :( of course

Posted by itsaturkey in United States, 13 Apr 2012 10:11

When I first saw these I was like, "Wow Lego, thanks for giving us the same sport-oriented minifigs that we got in the CM series, slap on blue paint and put a Olympics label on it." But after looking at them more in depth they're starting to grow on me. I feel like they look kind of retro in a sense, the blue and white combo brings back Lego memories I can't put my finger on. The old racers maybe? The boxer and karate expert look near identical to their CM counterparts. The runner and the archer are my personal favorites. But how come there are two swimmers? Or is the swimmer to the right Miss UK? If so I don't know why she's in a Lego Olympic pack.

Posted by murphquake in United States, 13 Apr 2012 10:14

I'm a new yorker and I think they're great.

Posted by Andhe in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 10:15

^^The 'swimmer' on the end is a gymnast on a beam.

Posted by murphquake in United States, 13 Apr 2012 10:17

Itsaturkey, she's a gymnast. I was abt to say I wonder if they're including her balance beam, then noticed the pic on the box has her doing a handstand!

Posted by murphquake in United States, 13 Apr 2012 10:18

Legobigbloke, the track &field guy also has something... Pole vault or javelin maybe?

Posted by voyanuitoa in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 10:32

The minifigs appear to be (from left to right): Weightlifter, Judo, Boxer, Swimmer, Tennis Player, Equestrian Rider, Archer, Relay team member (Baton?), Gymnast.

Posted by Ben J in Germany, 13 Apr 2012 10:34

Now I want that blue boxer. But I don't live in the UK.

Posted by dougts in United States, 13 Apr 2012 10:34

^ baton, as in a relay team

Posted by IAmWillGibson in United States, 13 Apr 2012 10:35

Hmm. I do proudly have a full MF set, but being that these are gonna be pretty exclusive [read: pricey outside of the UK] I fear I'll have to take a pass and convince myself they don't exist.

Posted by ytjedi in United States, 13 Apr 2012 10:36

My wife is all about England, so I was going to jump on these really quick, but they're UK only :(

Posted by max villano in Greece, 13 Apr 2012 10:43

l like the new bow!!

Posted by dmetcalf in United States, 13 Apr 2012 10:45

Fake.

Why would they put a "9" in the same place they put the series number? Wouldn't that be confusing?
When has Lego ever used the font in the title line at the top and the company name at the bottom?
The font also looks like a resized bitmap, very unproffessional.
When was the last time Lego used the graphic in the bottom right?
Don't you think Lego, or it's chosen ad agency, could afford better lighting, or at least figure out how to white balance?
Go back and look at the shot of the full box from every series (http://tinyurl.com/d7cn38o, http://tinyurl.com/c8jmup6, http://tinyurl.com/cfvrumh, http://tinyurl.com/7om5blx, http://tinyurl.com/7na28pf, http://tinyurl.com/7t2k5bg, http://tinyurl.com/83ghhxt). They look just a little but messed up. The photo above looks perfectly uniform and spaced out, not a single one out of place.

Someone's poor excuse for a hoax.

Posted by Gimpygeek in United States, 13 Apr 2012 10:47

Any idea if they be available outside the UK? like the US? (Other then the undoubtedly high priced ones that Some Ebay Sellers will have ofcourse :-)

Posted by EliteLeader99/brickboy2 in United States, 13 Apr 2012 10:47

These are cool!

Posted by tedward in Canada, 13 Apr 2012 11:02

I have to agree with dmetcalf, the photograph of the figs is certainly not up to usual quality standards for LEGO and if it is a UK exclusive it likely would not be labelled "9" on the box.

Posted by lovaquero in United States, 13 Apr 2012 11:04

^ & ^^^^ I'm going to have to go with dmetcalf as well (it's a fake). Too many inconsistencies with how Lego typically does this.

Although Huw seems to be convinced that this is real. Or he is in on the late april fools joke...

Posted by recon in United States, 13 Apr 2012 11:05

I dunno if the figs are real or not but the picture... yeah...there is no way that is an official image released by them. The box and label design are 'passable' but the photography is way off along with the layout of the image itself.

edit:

Note to future hoaxers: the white balance setting on your camera is there for a reason ;)

Posted by greekmick in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 11:08

The 9 in the bottom corner of the package looks like it has been photoshopped on with the spray can icon

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 13 Apr 2012 11:09

No no no no no no... They shouldn't have. They should have made it international: 9 minifigures representing the national team in each country i.e. Italian athletes in Italy, German athletes in Germany etc.. Not just British athletes in Britain. I just hate it that they did just British minifigs...

Posted by JonnyRonny in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 11:17

^^ The 9 on the packaging is 9 to collect like someone above said as you can just about make out the 'To Collect" below the 9. Umm thoughts on it being a fake maybe i'm hoping there not but for all of you in other countries people have already said that they will ship at cost.

Posted by Nightshroud99 in Canada, 13 Apr 2012 11:28

Problem with that idea Alemas is that some people will get upset that LEGO didn't choose their country.

I am personally a little upset that these will only be available in the UK. I mean come on LEGO it's not like there aren't any people with British lineage in other countries....

Of course, these just may be an elaborate hoax.

Posted by mkoesel in United States, 13 Apr 2012 11:37

I have to agree with those saying this is a hoax. Can we get an Ambassador to get some official word on this?

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 13 Apr 2012 11:40

@Nightshroud: EVERY country would be represented.

Posted by wb74160 in France, 13 Apr 2012 11:42

Late april fool, obviously

Posted by goldfish in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 11:44

Where is the cyclist? Isn't that area along with Swimming are main medal hope/s!

Posted by Ypres in Canada, 13 Apr 2012 11:44

So I'm not the only one thinking they're fake. Good. Whoever did this is greatly insulting our intelligence as collectors.

Posted by murphquake in United States, 13 Apr 2012 11:53

Actually the 9 is where the "16 to Collect" is on the normal boxes, not where the series number is, and is in the same style.... 9 to Collect makes sense to me

Posted by wildcherryp3psi in United States, 13 Apr 2012 11:55

These are fake, they aren't shown with the black stands and like previous posts the lighting isn't up to Lego standard.

Posted by Thomson & Thompson in Canada, 13 Apr 2012 12:03

I thought it was Series 9 because of the '9' on the box. Now I know that's for the figures.

Edit: I agree with all of you who think this might be a bit fishy. Still, it won't matter to me as I live in Canada.

Posted by dmetcalf in United States, 13 Apr 2012 12:03

murphquake, you are correct, I was mistaken with the series number.

But I still believe this is a fake.

Posted by Gregorovich in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 12:16

To all those saying they're fake because the box is different: remember, these aren't normal collectable Minifigs! The box has to be a little different, as they're not a new series, but just a one off.

I have to admit, though, they seem a little fishy. I'm hoping they're real.

Posted by pstrickler27 in United States, 13 Apr 2012 12:17

If this is a hoax.. it is very elaborate.. who would go to these lengths - and for what purpose - other than to excite some AFOLs for a short bit until we find out they are fake..

I think these are legit.. and I hate them.. for several reasons..

#1 - The are tied into the CMF series (It throws off the consistency of the CMF theme - which I hate)
#2 - Only available in the UK - that's garbage
#3 - Only UK is represented - what gives?
#4 - They are all wearing gold medals - did UK already win every event?
#5 - There are 9 - why 9? Did they run out of ideas?

I pray that these are fakes - if they are for real, I will be very disappointed with TLG.

Posted by Nesquik in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 12:17

The staff at my local LEGO store just confirmed this is real.

When I initially enquired, they asked how I heard about it, and after I said Brickset, they just laughed and winked. I said "So they're releasing them then?" and the answer was "Don't be surprised if you see some athletes in our window..."

I love how they get around saying 'Yes' or 'No'!

Posted by pstrickler27 in United States, 13 Apr 2012 12:23

^^^ That is some awful news.

Posted by George G. in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 12:32

To all of those who are complaining about them not being released out side of the UK, have you not thought about when the Olympics comes to your country you'll get the new set of exclusive figs (if the series is a success, of course)? ;)

Posted by el_rey95 in United States, 13 Apr 2012 12:33

I am just hoping I can get some of the hair pieces on bricklink. I think some of them are in new colors.

Posted by Zackula in United States, 13 Apr 2012 12:38

^That means there is a chance once every four years (or two if they do winter Olympics as well) of getting an Olympics in your country, and a set similar to this. I don't think many people want to wait the decades that it would take for the next Olympics in their country.

Posted by minifignick in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 12:38

Dam you Lego More money you will receive from me I can't keep up !

Posted by bluemoose in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 12:39

Clearly, what ever it is, it isn't an official, public press release. The style, as shown, fits the Lego internal communication branding. So, if it is real, it was intended for internal consumption, and their primary customers (i.e. retailers). Claims that it's fake because the wording is bit off, or because the photography is a bit rough, don't really hold water.

I think it's real, and we'll get a polished 'intended for public consumption' press release in due course ...

Posted by Rockman Xtreme in United States, 13 Apr 2012 12:40

Aww man... UK only....

Posted by dmetcalf in United States, 13 Apr 2012 12:44

bluemoose –
I'm not privy to internal Lego communications.
Could you provide a copy of one in a similar style? It would certainly help to determine this image's authenticity.
Thanks!

Posted by ickleb in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 12:47

i so hope that these aren't real they really spoil what is a wonderful series

Posted by 62bricks in United States, 13 Apr 2012 12:49

The swimmer appears to have a buff-colored torso and yellow arms.

The boxer's headgear is different on the package than in the photo.

Copyright 200 ?

Also - it's a low-quality photo, but several of the minifigs appear to have no hips. The gymnast, for example, has the red and blue printed design extend seamlessly over the hips and leg pieces. If you look at any minifig, you see there is a sharp ridge between the hips and legs. It's not really possible to extend the printing across the hips and legs that smoothly. Same with the belt on the Judo figure - compare it to the belt on the Karate Master figure and you'll see what I mean. The seams between the pieces create an interruption in the pattern. These look too smooth.

Posted by fyrmedhatt in United States, 13 Apr 2012 12:50

George G.- The Olympics come around every four years, or every two years if you count the winter olympics. Most countries in the world have never had the olympics and will never have it due to the expense and how seldom the event.

It's really strange that Lego, a Danish company, is releasing this series only in Britain when the Olympics is one of the most significant international events out there, the Olympics has always been a symbol of international cooperation.

If true I'm excited about these and I want them badly, but I'm not sure I'll put in the effort and money to get them. Their UK exclusive status is going to make them extremely coveted and expensive, I'm guessing most kids will never have the opportunity to get them as resellers will buy the lot to sell them online.

Posted by LostInTranslation in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 12:52

Thanks bluemoose, I am pleased you think it's real - I have absolute faith in your judgment! I really want it to be true but started to doubt...

Posted by dmetcalf in United States, 13 Apr 2012 12:53

62bricks -
You're right, it does say, as difficult as it is to read the resized, bitmap font, ©2010.

Great catch with the swimmer's torso color and boxer's headgear!

As for the separation of the torso and legs, it's difficult to see because of the low quality, but it's there.

Posted by JohnnyB in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 13:09

Cool. Reminds me of the old soccer sets. Maybe they will do limited country sets too ( like they did with soccer).

Posted by voyanuitoa in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 13:11

For those complaining that they will not be availible outside the UK, it says "Team GB, Official Licensed [Unreadable] Product". It is highly unlikely for Team GB to sell its products outside its own country, as the majority of its products are souviners for those who collect different Monopoly variations and special commerative coins, or tourists visiting during the games. It's likely that Team GB approached TLG, as they do with other companies, to make special Team GB branded products.

Posted by JohnnyB in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 13:11

And I definitely think its real. Promos are special and often limited. They don't have to fall in line with the norm.

Posted by ben30024 in United States, 13 Apr 2012 13:14

exclusively in the UK?
ugh, deprived of another awesome lego set
i wish all of the UK would disappear off the face of the earth :(

Posted by 62bricks in United States, 13 Apr 2012 13:15

There is also the (perhaps insignificant) fact that these outfits look nothing at all like the actual UK Olympic uniforms:

http://www.styleite.com/media/stella-mccartney-olympic-uniforms/

If this is genuine, then the 2010 copyright date (and the mismatched swimmer body) might indicate the photo is of an early mock-up of the proposed series. The box photo is most certainly a fabricated image and not of a real box, which also makes me think this is perhaps a mock-up for internal use and probably not what the final figures will actually look like (if they are real!)

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 13 Apr 2012 13:15

@miniroll: BRICKS!

Posted by goldfish in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 13:16

Posted by Redbullgivesuwind in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 13:25

For those wondering the email was forwarded to me by the manager of a toy shop where I live. Its possible he was taken in by a fake. Which will be worse for him as he ordered four boxes.

Posted by Firox 5000 in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 13:37

I must get these,

Posted by George G. in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 13:39

@legoninja0701 - I believe the Horse Rider's helmet is a new mould as it has hair underneath it. Perhaps a clue to an upcoming set/CM :)

Posted by Cligra in United States, 13 Apr 2012 13:41

The figures themselves look a bit legitimate, but the box and packet images just look really Photoshopped to me. Still, my judgment is often very wrong, so these could be completely real. They just don't look it to me.

Posted by copperwonder96 in United States, 13 Apr 2012 13:55

Note: When people are angry they become skeptics. Count the number of "skeptics" outside of the UK. Very interesting. Anyhow, I think it is very real. You don't think TLG sends "gorilla" brochures to it's retailers-that is hastily put-together marketing to meet tight deadlines? It's real and it is wonderful! I guess I'll have to make some good friends in the UK to snag me a box of these beauties!

Posted by fleury in Canada, 13 Apr 2012 13:58

The arms on the tennis player are printed, to appear to be short sleeves. I hope we see more of this in other sets.

Posted by Nightshroud99 in Canada, 13 Apr 2012 14:01

Well if every country ended up being represented, then that would be very expensive to produce.

Posted by pstrickler27 in United States, 13 Apr 2012 14:07

Why would TLG release UK-exclusive CMFs for a worldwide event - it's kind of ironic

Posted by bluemoose in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 14:16

^ a world-wide event ... that's taking place in the UK? An expected 5.3 million *extra* tourists are expected to visit the UK this summer, split between the Olympics & our Queen's diamond jubilee celebrations. So, no, not very ironic at all :-)

Posted by Gregorovich in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 14:23

@GeorgeG: I'm pretty sure that's the same helmet that comes in the new Friends Horseriding sets. However, that would mean these have to be from TLG, since those aren't available yet.

About there being no new pieces, legoninja0701, there's plenty. Other than all the new prints, almost every headgear is in a new colour, the boxer's gloves are a new colour, the baton is new and the tennis player's racquet is a new colour.

Everyone is complaining about these only being Team GB athletes. I think it makes perfect sense, given that we are the host nation. It's not as though they're going to produce a set for every single nation on earth. However, I do agree that it's unfair these are only available in the UK.

Posted by Cligra in United States, 13 Apr 2012 14:25

@copperwonder96: Angry? Why'd people outside of the UK be angry? There's always the magic of Bricklink, y'see...

Posted by pstrickler27 in United States, 13 Apr 2012 14:27

^ that other countries are competing in.. not JUST the UK - I would be ok with them if they were generic Olympians, but they are all Brits and they are all adorned with gold medals (what the heck?! - did the UK win all the medals already??) - what message does that send to other fans in other countries? - As an American - I can tell you that I am pretty disappointed in TLG.. I'm not even a fan of the olympics - but I AM a fan of CMF - and now I'm displeased that this series will forever exist, and will be missing from my collection - And it's not a matter of having to get them - I will never want these

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 13 Apr 2012 14:28

@Nightshroud: Yes, but it would make everyone happy...

Posted by legobuilderstudios in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 14:29

pstrickler27: The reason they are team GB is most likely because the Olympics is being held in the UK.

Posted by meyerc13 in United States, 13 Apr 2012 14:30

I don't think they are fake, we often see early prototype and photo-shopped images meant for LEGO retailers leak out, so it isn't unexpected that there would be problems with the image. Due to the lead time to start generating orders from the retailers, they can't always wait for final box art and production models.

Posted by pstrickler27 in United States, 13 Apr 2012 14:32

@Nightshroud @Gregorovich - Do you know how they make everyone happy?? Release Generic Olympic athletes.. not one nation (and I don't care that it's the host nation) - TLG is wonderful at being generic and pleasing everyone - this was a huge misstep..

Posted by pstrickler27 in United States, 13 Apr 2012 14:33

@legobuilderstudios - I understand why they picked the UK over any other nation (because they are the host nation) - my point is - they shouldn't have picked one nation - they should be generic - even if they are only sold in the UK

Posted by Goldmatt in United States, 13 Apr 2012 14:34

As I am not obsessed with getting all the CSM this is not a severe disappointment... only that lego is releasing them in UK only is somewhat of a letdown... can't wait until they're $300 a box on ebay...

Posted by bluemoose in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 14:37

They aren't 'Olympic' figs; they are 'Team GB' figs. Lego don't have a license from the IOC or LOCOG, and would make themselves liable to being sued if they tried to make 'Olympic' figs. They are 'Team GB' figs, and so are being sold in the UK. They probably couldn't justify the cost of making themed sets for other countries teams, as they aren't going to sell as well as the host nations'.

Lego make a 'I-heart-NY' fig that is sold in the NY stores. They make a 'I-heart-Canada' fig that's sold in the Canadian stores. They don't make a 'i-heart-london' fig or a 'I-heart-UK' fig. Is that fair? Probably not, but you won't find many people cause a fuss about it.

Posted by voyanuitoa in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 14:38

The problem with making a generic Olympic athlete is whatever colour you make the Olympians, it will resemble a competing nation, better to just say the minifigs are one specific team than leave it open to debate.

Posted by geckostocks in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 14:40

I can confirm these were authentic - I was in my local independent lego retailer on Tuesday and he received the above pictures via email from Lego while he was paying his bill - the 9 indeed means there is 9 figures - not a series 9 and they will indeed be exclusive to the UK - however they will not just be exclusive to Lego stores - so they should be obtainable in local retailers and WHSmiths/ Argos etc

Posted by Redbullgivesuwind in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 14:41

^Or of course the brickmaster sets that are available only in the USA

Posted by pstrickler27 in United States, 13 Apr 2012 14:44

@bluemoose - How about just making them "TEAM LEGO" - I don't care that they are only sold in the UK (that makes sense) - I have such a problem about it because they are connected to the CMF theme - and I want to have a complete collection of that theme - but I hate these figures with a passion.. so I am torn.

Posted by pstrickler27 in United States, 13 Apr 2012 14:46

@voyanuitoa - how about using TLG colors and clearly putting a brick flag or something on their shirt - TEAM LEGO!!! - no debate there..

Posted by grandbuilder2001 in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 14:47

OMG!!!! Seems legit.

Posted by pstrickler27 in United States, 13 Apr 2012 14:48

@Redbullgivesuwind - to reiterate.. I don't care that they are only being sold in the UK (that much makes sense to me - and they wouldn't be that difficult to get)

Posted by voyanuitoa in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 14:51

@pstrickler27 - From TLG's point of view, if you are going to release a special sports-centric CMF series during an olympic year in the host country, it makes a lot more buisness sense to make those sports minifigs members of that countries home team and share branding.

Posted by pstrickler27 in United States, 13 Apr 2012 14:59

@voyanuitoa - If you're market research is correct, then they simply should not have made ANY olympic figures or just not have connected them to the CMF series - but I have to dispute your "it makes sense from a business standpoint" logic - I have a feeling these are going to turn off more people than they turn on - here is one example - I would have bought a whole box of these if they were generic - but now I am not going to buy a single one - I can't imagine I am the only person (not from the UK) who feels this way

Posted by Redbullgivesuwind in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 15:03

Bluemoose, thank you for standing up for 'Team GB!!'

The problem is every other country apart from the UK is complaining! If you think about it America and other places get promos and special sets so let the UK have some sets exclusive to here!!

Posted by voyanuitoa in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 15:09

@pstrickler27 - To refer to my earlier comment "It's likely that Team GB approached TLG, as they do with other companies, to make special Team GB branded products." It may be that TLG were presented with the license by Team GB, which is likely to be a lot simpler than going to the IOC, which would be required to make 'olympic' figures, who don't actually make branded gifts and products, that is handled by the orgnanising committee/organisation for each specific olympic games.

Posted by pstrickler27 in United States, 13 Apr 2012 15:10

@Redbullgivesuwind - I gotcha - to your point for everyone else.. there's the Hayabusa and the other CUUSOO project as well that are only available in Japan (at least to my knowledge)

Posted by pstrickler27 in United States, 13 Apr 2012 15:16

@DarthLuke824 these should not be lumped in with the CMF line - which is a line of generic characters - it is going to look out of place for years to come - it was a poor decision to connect the two

@voyanuitoa - Even if Team GB approached TLG with their offer, TLG should have turned them away - or at least not have lumped them in with the CMF series - as stated above - it is going to be the dark mark in my collection for years to come

Posted by princedraven in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 15:19

^ So pstickler27, your opinion that these are the dark mark in your collection....if they had been US based figures....would you opinion be the same?!?

Posted by JRDA0406 in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 15:20

I don't like the tone of some of these anti-UK posts and I'm not patriotic.
there's plenty of stuff we don't get in the UK which you Americans get, you take it all for granted.

Posted by Graysmith in Sweden, 13 Apr 2012 15:20

I do think it's a shame that they didn't do these as a "Team LEGO" release with generic athletes that could be sold anywhere in the same manner as the Collectable Minifigures. Yes, the Olympics are taking place in London so for the British it's an extra special Olympics. But everyone loves and gets excited about the Olympics. I'm not a sports nut normally but when it's the Olympics I'm like GO TEAM GO! and you get all riled up rooting for your country. This could've been a really great Olympics tie-in for LEGO fans everywhere.. Too bad LEGO didn't dream bigger and realized this would've been just as popular in any other country as in the UK. Definitely a missed opportunity.

Posted by voyanuitoa in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 15:20

@pstrickler27 - While the minifiugres may be better suited under the Sports theme, the popularity of CMF suits them better in my opinion.

Posted by Redbullgivesuwind in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 15:21

@pstrickler27 exactly so I dont see why they would not do exclusives for the UK but when it blows up I can kinda see why they dislike them :-D

Posted by voyanuitoa in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 15:24

This debate is probably best solved by asking a TLG employee at AFOLCON in May, or waiting for an official press release.

Posted by pstrickler27 in United States, 13 Apr 2012 15:25

@princedraven - I would still not like them if they were US olympians - and I do not like the Fire Brigade for the fact that they put the American flag in it - TLG should remain generic when dealing with series that are globally loved

@JRDA0406 - I hope I wasn't coming across as a UK hater - I have a few friends from the UK and I love them - I hate the fact that TLG picked 1 country to represent an entire line of Olympic minifigures (I would have hated them if they were American)

Posted by geckostocks in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 15:27

Hi Redbullgivesuwind - no actually it was from a retailer in Honiton (Devon)

Posted by lukehankenobi in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 15:32

WHAT A LOT OF FUSS. I think they are great. But really, is it worth getting worked up about. This is the first Olympics that Collectable Mini-Figures have been made, and it should be celebrated, and encouraged. Maybe they will do it again in four years time in Rio. Having them specifically GB makes sense. It makes them more exclusive, and special to these games. I don't see any reason why they shouldn't be available to other parts of the world, but instead of complaining about it here, why not contact Lego and ask them to do just that. I do understand your frustration though. When Lego brought out the White House, it was exclusive to the US/Canada. Then lots of people, myself included, pestered them until it got a UK release. Thank you Lego!

Posted by CapnRex101 in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 15:32

I love these. Looking forward to hearing the release date. To those of you in other countries, I suppose they will do more for future Olympics hopefully.

Posted by Gregorovich in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 15:33

@pstrickler27: again, these aren't part of the Collectable Minifigures series! These are just a one off, limited edition exclusive. A bit like one of the Store Opening exclusive sets, except they're for the Olympic Games.

I can't really tell, but is the Judo girl's hair black or dark brown? I hope it's black.

Posted by pstrickler27 in United States, 13 Apr 2012 15:33

@voyanuitoa - it doesn't make sense to me why they fit better with the CMF series - for a few reasons:

1. There are only 9 - not 16 (inconsistent)
2. They don't have to be mystery bags (some will dispute this - but why not just do something like a battle pack)
3. They aren't even a labeled series - so what are they 7.5??
4. The CMF are generic characters that appeal to everyone - not one nation

These belong in a category all their own - I hate seeing the "minifigures" logo attached to the box - it is very upsetting

Posted by pstrickler27 in United States, 13 Apr 2012 15:34

@Gregorovich - they are clearly part of the series or "theme" - they have the logo and everything - the box is the same - the packaging is the same - how are they not the same thing??

Posted by pstrickler27 in United States, 13 Apr 2012 15:38

@lukehankenobi - I hope you are wrong that this will be a reoccuring tradition (at least if they are lumped in with the CMF series) - I am fine with these existing if they weren't part of the CMF series - but now my collection will be incomplete

Posted by Parax in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 15:45

I notice that these are 'Team GB' not 'Olympics' (Olympic is in title but not on product) No Mention of '2012' and no mention of 'London', why? because that's all licensed, and reserved for official Games sponsors, which Lego are not. someone is skating very close to the edge here. These are also not the official Olympic UK Team colours for the Athletes which were announced only two weeks ago...

I am curious as to the text in the bottom right corner where it looks like it says Official [something...]

Anyone fancy colour balancing this image? That base couldn't be old dark grey could it?

Posted by princedraven in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 15:49

@pstrickler27 I appreciate everyone is different and everyone has their own opinions, but "These belong in a category all their own - I hate seeing the "minifigures" logo attached to the box - it is very upsetting". Wowsers!!
There are a lot of things upsetting in the world and I can understand that people 'hate' for certain reasons..... but you do understand these are little plastic figures. It may be time to step away from the bricks for a bit if you are getting this wound up by something which Lego may or may not even be releasing... Just saying :)

I think it would be alright if they could make it generic sports fig, but they already have pleanty of those.

I'm in the USA, but I don't HATE these minifigures; I LOVE them! What I hate is the fact that I'm going to have to pay through the nose to get them in order to keep my CMF collection complete... PLEASE TLG, sell these worldwide via the Lego Online store, not just in the UK. (And make a Team USA set too!)

Posted by grave.dave in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 16:25

@Parax - I think it says Official Licensed Team Product - the same way that it does on this page ...

http://www.cadburygiftsdirect.co.uk/products/877-heroes-team-gb-mug.aspx

... so it's associated to a team but not as you said an official Games sponsor so limited in what they can say. I seem to recall companies doing this with previous Olympics and World Cups. I'm trying to decide if the logo in the top corner is the same as the mug on the left (but if I squint at the monitor much more I'm going to get an almighty headache).

Also the news about it seems to have disappeared from fbtb!

Posted by Venunder in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 16:28

Brilliant I want them all ....... except for the boxer.
Although I guess I could find a place for him in my city.

I particularly want the swimmer for my beach, the tennis player to play against my CMF7 tennis player and the horse rider for my farm and country lanes. :)

Are we going to have to visit Stratford Westfield to get hold of these or will they be released around the UK?

Posted by Kez in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 16:37

I'm guessing that all will be revealed at Afolcon....

Posted by CapnRex101 in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 18:05

Superman hair in ginger! :D

@Mr. Toilet - Michael Phelps wears a swimming cap, something of a legend in the sport! Also, Lego probably wanted them to fit in with the other Collectable Minifigures so the skin is yellow.

Yay.

Posted by Snowtrooper119 in Australia, 13 Apr 2012 18:11

I think these look great but they will be too expensive to ship to Australia. Also to everyone in the US and UK we don't get any promos at all so stop complaining that the other guy gets better deals.

Posted by JohnnyB in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 18:14

Good god.... It's not a big deal. They're fine as is. Lego did something neat and people cry murder. I think its cool and special. London are the hosts and spending quite a bit in anticipation. This is literally a small thing that not even a ton of people outside of diehards will even see. If you want generic then just get the regular figures or sport figures. But for heavens sake its a waste to whine and be bitter about something as logical as this. I think its a great idea. Just like Lego soccer would be again in the image of whatever the home nation is.

Posted by LukeSkywalker in Ireland, 13 Apr 2012 18:57

I wonder how likely it is that these will appear in Ireland? Since we're close buddies, with releases of other minifigure lines being sychronous too, I'd say chances are good. :)

Posted by ShatteredGnome in United States, 13 Apr 2012 19:09

Apart from the old-looking gray base and low-quality photo, there does seem to be some strange inconsistencies in terms of the bags/box and the picture in the form of missing gear, not including those gold medals on the bag. I'm also puzzled why, aside from the gymnast's balance beam, they weren't given the black stand pieces like the CMFs have. That would have made some amount of sense in my opinion instead of being displayed on a large plate.

I also find it odd that if it's just "Team GB", the Olympic rings logo is still present on packaging.

On the flipside, the render quality of the bag or box pictures show the figs in a sort of 'animated' way that seems like it's professional LEGO design, so I don't know. I'm still very skeptical, but it's possible this is real, if still in development within the company.

Posted by Gandalf1 in United States, 13 Apr 2012 19:26

Haha, very funny, but April Fools is over. Huw, why didn't you say exactly WHERE you got your information from? Or rather, where did @Redbullgivesuwind get his information?

Some points to consider:
-The copywrite thing is barely visible, and says "200".
-None of the minifigs have medals on in the real image, only in the CGI one, probably because S7 is barely out yet and most people don't have access to them.
-Why are they not on normal minifig stands?
-The image is low quality, so as to make the (R) and (C) symbols illegible.

I was fooled for a little while, but now I'm 99.999999999999% sure that this is fake. It's still impressive, though.

PS this is of topic but I emailed lego about nick fury. This is what they said: "Unfortunately, we do not have any plans to have Nick Fury in a Marvel™ Set. Although he is on the press release, that doesn't mean that a specific set will be coming out. I personally like him a lot and hope that we make a set soon. We apologize for any inconvenience."

Posted by LukeSkywalker in Ireland, 13 Apr 2012 19:46

@gandalf & shatteredgnome - BlueMoose has said earlier that the images are most likely intended for internal company communications, and that a polished "intended for public consumption" advertisement will appear in due course, hence Huw's fears that the images might need to be withdrawn. I think fbtb already had to take down their story.

Posted by Gandalf1 in United States, 13 Apr 2012 19:48

What I don't really understand is why everyone seems to hate them so much. I might actually buy them if they came out and were available in the USA. They're kind of cool.

Posted by ALSTDA in United Kingdom, 13 Apr 2012 20:38

Considering the amount of British tax money going into the Olympics to make it a great 'spectacle' for the world, I think it is somewhat fair that it is just team GB. Som of the minifigures could pass for Dutch or French ie the relay runner.

Posted by The Reviewer in United States, 13 Apr 2012 21:39

Oh well, at least we Americans get TC-14 and the Hulk in minifigure form. so I wouldn't complain too much.

Posted by 62bricks in United States, 13 Apr 2012 22:35

There are several "official" organizations contributing to the London 2012 games. One of them is the British Olympic Association, which has a red and blue lion logo and also uses the Olympic rings logo (with permission). The picture is too crummy to be sure, but it looks like the figures have the BOA logo on their uniforms. The gymnast's leotard definitely shows part of a large version of the logo.

So these do appear to be licensed products - licensed by the BOA, but not by the other Olympic groups (The Mayor of London, LOCOG and IOC).

I was shown these yesterday by the owner of my favorite Lego outlet (independant) .She had recieved the email from Lego first thing yesterday morning and had already ordered four boxes for her store. So they are not a wind up or late April Fool at all.

Posted by Redbullgivesuwind in United Kingdom, 14 Apr 2012 03:15

@gandalf this was a email sent to my local toy store manager for him to preview them and order them. That is why the image is not great as its not meant for a general release. I would name him but when lego get thisen down and his name is every he will get in trouble. So not gonna do him over

Posted by CapnRex101 in United Kingdom, 14 Apr 2012 05:03

@Redbullgivesyouwind and jezzatheshed - I've been into my local independent toy shop this morning and heard a similar thing, they received an e-mail as well. The pictures on the e-mail were even smaller than they are here! Were the stores you went to part of the Toymaster franchise?

Where is Usain Bolt?! It would have made sense to make the biggest and most popular athletes from a few countries around the world, eg. Sir Chris Hoy for GB, Michael Phelps for the USA, Usain Bolt for Jamaica etc.

Posted by Zordboy in Australia, 14 Apr 2012 05:26

Posted by itsaturkey in United States, 14 Apr 2012 10:02

I feel the real issue here (If there is one) is the fact of Lego continuously making 'Country-Exclusives', it excludes Lego fans of other countries and just makes a war between the UK and the US. What does Lego have to gain? For this particular instance I will reserve my opinion until more info is released, for all we know the CM box is just a preliminary or something. But Lego really should have foreseen this result. Making team, sport and country specific sport items would be like Lego releasing a Lego Church, every other denomination would rally to have his/her denominational Church built, than Atheists would also complain. Why bother if it will make such a fuss? The same could be said here. Personally I don't mind, I don't really collect the CM, and I wouldn't buy these any way, but it's really more the principle of the thing.

Posted by Civic Bossman in Australia, 14 Apr 2012 10:09

As was mentioned further up, think yourself lucky you don't live in Australia: no LEGO Brand stores with giveaways / exclusives / PAB, no polybag sets, no lucky insert chrome C-3PO etc etc, supremely high prices..... need I go on?

I think these are great and will try and grab a set if the price is right. London / UK have earned the right to host the games so why shouldn't they get the recognition on these minifigs? And have done an olympic themed promotion before, you can't even use the word "Olympic" or anything resembling the rings without full IOC permission.

Posted by CapnRex101 in United Kingdom, 14 Apr 2012 10:17

@Civic Bossman - I cannot understand why Australia do not have a Lego store yet in Sydney or Melbourne! There are so many people here on Brickset from down under I would have thought it would have been popular. Hopefully in the next couple of years one will spring up.

Over here in Canada and United states, Lego is very imortant to us too, I always look at polybags and exclusive sets that are onyl released in UK, like these minifigures, and airline specials, to me I agree with anybody sayin its not fair, just because they are a part of a celebration in your country doesnt mean anything, I think lego should be releasing all exclusive sets and other stuff worldwide, Im not complaining or anything Im jut saying that Lego would make better profit, and more satisfied customers. ^The US gets its fair share of exclusives as well although I am not sure about Canada. Frequently sets are released first in the US as well so I think the balance is even between the UK and the US personally.

The Americans get tons of exclusive LEGO, and you're moaning this one time, even though we're the hosts. I am ovejoyed that the olymoics are in East London.

@ JDLego - it wasn't me who said it's just a toy that i love - it was jon11380 and actually, although the UK do get more exclusives than the US (although you still get loads) i know i'd much rather pay less for ordinary lego sets - licenced sets tend to be the same in dollars as in pounds nowadays which i hardly think is fair so i wouldn't be complaining if i were you - i know i'd rather pay 2 thirds of the price than have the odd exclusive now and then. besides - i'm sure you'll be able to get hold of the figures on ebay - i'll defo be getting to sets - one to keep, one to sell :) and yes - you are complaining - what else would u call it??

@ CapnRex and Lee10 - Well i wouldnt know if the Americans get the same things as you guys in the UK, since Im from Canada, and Im not moaning Im not even from the States, so maybe they get more exclusives but that doesnt conecernt me at all because once again im from Canada. And exactlly even though your the hosts it doesnt matter, we had the Olympics here in Canada too and we didnt get anything?

@ brix - Oh ok, well I dont know why your comparing everything to the states, if you can read beside my name it clearly states 'in Canada', you said the states gets loads of exclusives, doesnt apply to me, and im not complaining im just giving my opinion, Im just saying Lego should be the same everywhere, thats all.

I can not understand all this arguing, the world is not fair, there are always going to be sets that are available in one country and not another, but surely it does not matter, if I can not get a set in the UK I buy it through bricklink from a seller in the country that does have it (that show I cgot the Brickmaster sets that were only available in the USA). If there is a set thats only available in the UK I sell it on bricklink so buyers in other countries can buy it.

And lets faceit if a set is available in every country then everyone moans its cheaper in some countries than in others, I dont like the fact that the US price is the same in dollarss as the UK price is in pounts, but this will not change, so why moan about it. I would rather live inthe UK and pay UK prices than move to the USA just to get lego cheaper.

You should think of the poor lego collectors in countries that can not buy direct from lego and struggle to even buy them let alone at a good price.

So lets just enjoy the fact that there are going to be some more minfigs to collect (im not interested in the olympics but im interested in collecting minifigs) and anyone in another country can do what I do when I can not get them, buy them from someone else, Ive had to do it a lot in the past.

Will they be in the USA as well?

Posted by TheCahleySlash in United Kingdom, 14 Apr 2012 16:11

Will these figures be widely released across the UK or just in London/ Lego online?
I can see these figures becoming collocters items in the future, so if I was you I would buy these as soon as they are released.

Brix - That does make sense but then if the US gets cheaper sets, UK gets more exclusive sets, then what does Australia or Canada or any other country that is overlooked by Lego get? More expensive sets, and no exclusive sets. That's all I'm saying, Lego fans deserve to be treated equally irrelevant of where they live.
Jon11380 - It might not be a war, but I think you should look at the comments. Each side complains that the other side gets better deals, while other countries are almost completely ignored by Lego. And I'm not complaining about them, I wouldn't buy them anyway, but other people would buy them. That's money right out of Lego's hands.
Keithkram - The world might not be fair, but that doesn't mean we can't try to make it just a little bit fairer. Call me a dreamer, I really don't care.

Can everyone please stop arguing because it is somewhat ruining what is usually a very friendly site. Everyone would enjoy themselves a lot more if we were just pleased to have these figures here in the UK, and for those overseas I am sure there will be plenty of resellers of these figures who will offer reasonable prices for you all, not everyone is out to make a profit all of the time.

I agree. the UK gets all the good rare hard to get stuff like the shirtless Darth maul Polybag,These olympic minifigs, exclusive Polybags, airline sets, etc.

Does this count for Series 9?

Posted by Goony in Denmark, 14 Apr 2012 21:55

It's a bit hard to read how US and UK battling on who getting most/least and at which prise.
Lego is a danish company and we never get anything exclusive and on top of that UK prices are only about 80% of ours and US prices about 50%.
I think these minifigs are cool and I hope that someone in UK will be friendly (you guys usually are:-) ) and sell me a set. If not, then bad luck. A complete collection is utopia anyway.
Have fun with your bricks

The Darth Maul was not actually given out in the U.S (Unless you went to the N.Y toy fair)
