Walmart has revealed the LEGO Exclusive Sopwith Camel on its website, somewhat earlier than LEGO intended it to be announced.

It's priced at a shade under $100 and the description reads:

Relive a classic era of aviation history with the Sopwith Camel biplane. This set lets you recreate a detailed replica of one of the most recognizable British single-seat biplanes ever to have graced the skies. Features include a realistic rotating propeller and engine cylinders, a hinged tail rudder, realistic tension wires, functioning wing ailerons and tail flaps that can be controlled from the cockpit.

    • Detailed replica
    • Rotating propeller and engine cylinders
    • Hinged tail rudder
    • Functioning wing ailerons
    • Tail flaps can be controlled from cockpit

LEGO has asked Eurobricks to remove the images, but I have republished them here because they originated from a legitimate source and are not watermarked. No word on release date yet, but I suspect it'll be June/July.

(thanks to the ever-observant grogall for uncovering it)

It looks great, appears functional and is at a great price point.

Thumbs up!

Posted by Parax in United Kingdom, 18 Apr 2012 11:43

I'd need to know if this is Licensed with the RAF! We cant have this one withdrawn its a beauty!..
I understand that the RAF won rights to the roundel on everything except clothing in a case in 2004.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/3393485.stm
"the MoD has been given the sole rights to use the roundel, which appears on all RAF aircraft, on items other than clothing such as military hardware"

Another nice pic of it here http://smashing-bricks.com/2012/04/18/10226-sopwith-camel/

Posted by bluishgrey in United States, 18 Apr 2012 11:48

YES! I am really looking forward to this one. I hope we get a new Fokker DR1 to go with it!

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 18 Apr 2012 11:51

^^ That's interesting. The ruling was after the first version of the Camel was released so may well apply here.

Posted by LuvKernow in United Kingdom, 18 Apr 2012 11:53

This is GORGEOUS! Must buy!

Posted by Graysmith in Sweden, 18 Apr 2012 12:06

The plane in last year's Pharaoh's Quest 7307 Flying Mummy Attack set had roundel stickers on it, so I can't imagine that's going to be a problem.

Posted by Matthew in United Kingdom, 18 Apr 2012 12:06

^^^ Maybe the fact that it's in 2 halves could be TLG's loophole...

Posted by Parax in United Kingdom, 18 Apr 2012 12:09

^ it's not in halves it's printed on a 6x6 tile.

Posted by cjg in United States, 18 Apr 2012 12:10

Wow $100 seems like a really fair price!

Posted by Graysmith in Sweden, 18 Apr 2012 12:10

I don't think they're halved, it looks like a piece of string is stretched over the roundel piece.

Posted by rnsrobot in Canada, 18 Apr 2012 12:29

Gives me an excuse to build a nice LEGO Snoopy.

Posted by richselby in United Kingdom, 18 Apr 2012 12:36

It looks lovely, so much more so then Big Ben in the previous article. I would imagine TLG have licensed the RAF roundel properly. I mean, it's not as if they're new to the licensing arena. Would love to know how much for though.
Any marketing types care to guess?

Posted by Nightshroud99 in Canada, 18 Apr 2012 12:39

That looks stunning!!!

Posted by wunztwice in United States, 18 Apr 2012 12:55

Gorgeous! I loved the first version, and I can't wait to get my hands on this one!!!

Posted by AgentWHO in United States, 18 Apr 2012 13:02

I always wanted the original... But now I can have this beauty! Dark green wings are awesome!

Posted by legoDad42 in United States, 18 Apr 2012 13:03

Gorgeous! Love it! Great look for display. And it looks like an interesting build.
Here's hoping Lego considers WWII as a 'classic era' to release some of the great fighter planes from then.
A 'Greatest Generation' line.

Posted by PocasNuckie in Portugal, 18 Apr 2012 13:33

I don't like the green color. Appart from that it's a great model and a definetly Must Buy.

Posted by yolani in Germany, 18 Apr 2012 13:50

really nice set, but quite expensive in my opinion for <900 pieces.

Posted by guildfordmatt in United Kingdom, 18 Apr 2012 14:10

What lovely thing! Love the colours and the functionality. Shame this is the second release of a Camel, why not try something else?

Posted by julencin2000 in Spain, 18 Apr 2012 15:18

@Parax But for example Pharaoh's Quest 7307 uses a single piece with british roundel and it's not licensed with the RAF.

Posted by Wiseman_2 in United Kingdom, 18 Apr 2012 15:23

@guildfordmatt
That was over 9 years ago... there are so many other sets from other themes that have been repeated more times since... ^.^

I will be very likely getting this, it looks like a gorgeous display piece. Should go very nicely alongside the Space Shuttle :)

Posted by The Reviewer in United States, 18 Apr 2012 15:26

I gonna get this when it's released.

Posted by CapnRex101 in United Kingdom, 18 Apr 2012 15:47

This looks absolutely fantastic, best set of the summer for me (apart from maybe Jabba's Palace, but we'll see).

Posted by Ypres in Canada, 18 Apr 2012 15:57

The epic tales of the Great War are in my blood... I'm going to own this model.

Posted by bodybomb3 in United Kingdom, 18 Apr 2012 16:15

If lego are producing large scale aircrafts then, fingers crossed, we may get a spitfire :) But I doubt it

Posted by CapnRex101 in United Kingdom, 18 Apr 2012 17:01

^That is my absolute dream set. It is an incredibly difficult shape to recreate in Lego though.

Posted by blomper in United States, 18 Apr 2012 19:57

Very nice, can't wait to build, along with a sister plane, Red Baron.

Posted by dragon_teenager in United States, 18 Apr 2012 20:50

Looks fantastic! I missed the first version of this plane, so this is great news to me.

Posted by OuterRimTradingCo. in Australia, 18 Apr 2012 21:22

Looks lovely! I hope this is followed by a re-build of the old 10024 "Red Baron" Fokker DR1 tri-plane from 2002 so we can have some dogfights!

Posted by jake9 in United States, 19 Apr 2012 00:23

I'm not gonna let this one pass me up this time. A must-buy for me.

Posted by murphquake in United States, 19 Apr 2012 00:31

Maybe British common law is very different, but in the US any government produced material is considered in the public domain. I'm sure with all the model planes made over the 100 years of British military aviation that MILLIONS of roundels have been made as decals stickers and prints.

Reading the article Parax posted it looks like there was no judgement stating only the RAF can use it, moreso that the RAF can't restrict it's use on clothing, but has the right to use it on other "Military Hardware" which Lego clearly isn't.

This is a bit of a close issue for me as NYC has made a big deal of trying to protect "its property" in the form of logos of city agencies and such, in the wake of the huge popularity of FDNY and NYPD, both from the media over many years, and especially in the wake of the 9/11/01 terrorist attacks. Combined with other overzealous attempts to control various symbols of the city they have harassed many businesses, individuals and even arrested people falsely, most of which have lead to NYC paying large sums to settle the subsequent lawsuits.

Roundel-arama! Massive, too big for MFs, sadly other creator sets have been too small...
I wonder how they got the roundel on 'Flying Mummy Attack' from Pharaoh's Quest?

I think all these Roundels have a noticeably thin white edge/ extra ring if you like which saves it from being the true Roundel with a defined blue edge.

Posted by rockbrick in Gibraltar, 19 Apr 2012 02:58

the RAF roundel and the roundel on the photo of the set are different

the Lego one has a white border and a smaller red circle - so perhaps thats how they have got away with it?

Posted by CamberbrickGreen in United Kingdom, 19 Apr 2012 02:59

ha you beat me to it.

Posted by Corellian Engineering in Belgium, 19 Apr 2012 03:06

Nice... This will probably the first 10xxx series model I will buy.
Browsing through the set database I had stumbled on the previous one before.. which I missed because of the infamous dark ages...
Now that I will be ablte to pick up a new one for about the price (or even lower) the 2nd hand ones go on bricklink, I am happy I did resist the temptation and didnt buy the 3451 yet.

Strange though that Brickset still has the pictures up. I saw it first on Eurobricks, but seems they have taken them down already on demand of TLG.
Idem other sites have already taken down the Olympic figs pictures...
Is Huw that much loved by TLG that they are granting him exclusive publishing rights now?? :-)

Posted by Mickitat in Germany, 19 Apr 2012 03:23

Must have. Enough said.

Posted by grogall in Germany, 19 Apr 2012 03:35

I have started a HR drool party on Eurobricks with HR versions of the pictures!

Enjoy

Why another Soppy Camel? Very disappointing choice. Surely there have been other interesting planes in the past 140 years. What about a Tiger Moth, a Spitfire...

Posted by Be-Burger in Israel, 19 Apr 2012 08:52

I definitely want this :)

Posted by Gandalf1 in United States, 19 Apr 2012 11:07

Very cool! It seems LEGO is releasing a lot of dark green plates this year. Look at the LOTR sets and the Endor rebel trooper battle pack.

Posted by legoguysw in United Kingdom, 19 Apr 2012 12:57

Looks great, but I agree somewhat with Duq (3 posts up). A proper Spitfire would have been great, seeing as it is one of the, if not the, most important aircraft in history.
I hope this has a reasonable price, but as usual I expect an astronomical UK price.

Posted by meccanotwitch in United Kingdom, 19 Apr 2012 12:59

^^^I agree, even though I love this version more than the first. What about the Lancaster bomber, now this famous plane would make an excellent model.

Posted by richselby in United Kingdom, 20 Apr 2012 04:52

I'm sure if it sells well Spitfires, Lancasters et al could be in the offing. But we all have to buy it rather than just admire it.

Posted by EliteLeader99/brickboy2 in United States, 20 Apr 2012 10:40

That thing is so cool!

Posted by DarthLuke824 in United Kingdom, 20 Apr 2012 14:35

Wow! I really love this set, a must have compare to the last one. I really like LEGO planes and this one will be a firm addition to my collection.

Posted by Konstantin in United States, 20 Apr 2012 23:05

Is it minifigure scale model?

Posted by Lunchie in United Kingdom, 21 Apr 2012 11:33

Wow! I hope can pick one up on a trip to the US as my grandfather flew one of these!
