Posted by yellowcastle, 04 May 2012 10:44. Filed under Cuusoo.

Yet another design reaches 10,000 votes on Cuusoo.  What does everyone think?  Are there enough Zelda fans out there and is this the right scene to reimagine in LEGO?  Though I'm not the biggest fan of the game, I'm certainly excited to see what LEGO can do with this submission.

Now if only we can get the modular Western town over the hump as it's up to 8,500+ supporters!  If you haven't supported it yet, and you're over 13, VOTE NOW!

At the moment all it really seems to be is the figures and a bunch of new weapons. I'll what LEGO make of it before I make any decisions (that is of course, they can get a license).

I really think licensed sets should be banned. They always get the most votes even if the model isn't that good. Communities from the licensed theme (not LEGO) vote but then I doubt any of them actually buy.
There are already enough licenses themes on the shelves and surely any more will just increase the price of LEGO (on average).
Each license costs LEGO more and unless they get a big profit from their license (e.g. at least a wave or two) I doubt they will allow them to continue (on Cuusoo). Do we really need all these new waves of licensed sets?

EDIT: I've just seen this model(s) http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/14886 and think it's far better than the one that gained 10,000. As I said before, the 10,000 votes model is just fancy weapons and figs. This has some really detailed play sets and a lot of work/imagination has gone into it.

Posted by CCC in United Kingdom, 04 May 2012 11:27

There is way too much detail on the weapons and shields. You only need to look at the weapons with the LOTR sets to see that these are not realistic. Weapons are usually one colour, two at most. Similarly detailing on the shield is too much. Look at Boromir's shield or Legolas's bow - they are normal Lego parts - and they could be used in any set. These are just too detailed to fit in with even modern Lego sets. Hand printing? No thanks.

Meh.

I don't know how I feel about this yet.. I really doubt it will be made.. I agree with the posters above.. I'm tired of licensed sets on CUUSOO.. I think Western Town Modular will be the next successful project.. I don't see back to the future being made either..

Doesn't Nintendo already have a license with K'nex?

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 04 May 2012 11:46

Odd. It used to be neck-and-neck with the modular Western town until yesterday. I fear some celebrity must have mentioned it... Or Nintendo mentioned it. :P

Posted by Ypres in Canada, 04 May 2012 11:52

With the minifigures pictured the only way Lego would be able to produce something similar to them would be making them CMF quality. We've started seeing a mix of China parts with recent sets anyway... so it's not like Lego is taking a huge step backwards.

Lego Zelda would be an absolute hit, however, not a successful theme if having to compete with LOTR. I'm a collector who's more than able to own both, but kids don't have the same spending caps any of us do. Any adult who hasn't fallen in love with the N64 Zelda age has zero passion for gaming. Zelda is a timeless classic and I'd obviously buy anything that honours it in a way that fits my Lego collecting... I'd be a FOOL not to. I hope Zelda passes. I don't see why it wouldn't unless Lego doesn't want to "play ball" with the license agreement.

License themes on Cuusoo are stupid. I always thought being able to have a 1% royalty for pitching an idea YOU DIDN'T have ownership of (for which you could surrender upon uploading on Lego Cuusoo) was completely unrealistic.

Posted by snoboarder31 in United States, 04 May 2012 11:52

Why all the Zelda hate/apathy? I grew up loving Zelda... I grew up loving Lego... I, for one, am pretty psyched right now!

Posted by richselby in United Kingdom, 04 May 2012 12:00

As far as TLG is concerned, this time Cuusoo has delivered: a new set marketing angle that their internal processes would miss, yet still appeal to the core market. But do kids these days still play Zelda? I imagine a licence from Nintendo would be much cheaper than from a Hollywood movie studio (pace Back to the Future), so I see this one passing the review board stage. The only trouble is it seems to be a bunch of minifigs and weapons proposed, rather than a construction set. Maybe that's a good thing.

Posted by pstrickler27 in United States, 04 May 2012 12:05

^Kids still play Zelda.. the game on the Wii is still selling hot..

@Ypres.. I disagree with your comment "Any adult who hasn't fallen in love with the N64 Zelda age has zero passion for gaming".. I have a huge passion for gaming.. especially Nintendo games.. N64 was my life and I still play it on a regular basis along with my Sega Genesis and NES.. but I do not like Zelda at all.. I could never get into it - just a little too nerdy for my taste (that's my opinion of course).. to each his own.

Posted by richl in United States, 04 May 2012 12:11

Ambivalent on this, but I expect it could sell well if some good sets were designed - although as Mario is with K'Nex it may cause some issues.

As for how it got 2500 votes overnight, it looks like IGN played a part -

I just wish there were sets in Cuusoo that were not so centered around fighting!
What happened to just Play Time? Do all the sets have to have a theme of destruction and mayhem?
I hope the quiet Western Town gets 10,000...
^ Does anyone know a Western Theme Fan Club to push the Western Town?

Posted by BrickBob09 in United Kingdom, 04 May 2012 12:22

If it was an Western Hill Valley town (BTTF P3), it would have reached it's target. I actually think it would be a good idea (a BTTF Western Hill Valley, although I am still 100% behind the http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/1787).

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 04 May 2012 12:29

@richl: I knew it. Bricks...

Posted by kmvk83 in Netherlands, 04 May 2012 12:32

I would definitly buy Zelda LEGO sets. I voted for this idea on Coosoo.

I am worried though that its mainly the figures which will appeal to the bigger public.

Although I can think of some cool idea's:
- Temple of Time (must have!)
- Deku Tree
- Link's (tree)house
- Hyrule Castle
- Spirits tracks train
- Phantom houreglass Boat
- Link with Epona (like the new LotR horse)
- Kakaryko village
- Goron's! with caves.

Well Nintendo and LEGO go get creative!

Posted by snoboarder31 in United States, 04 May 2012 12:40

@richselby:

The latest game in the series, Skyward Sword, sold 3.23 million units so far.

So, yes, kids still play those games.

I really hope lego bans licenses. These fake votes are getting ridiculous.

I'm going to make a cuusoo entry to make Lego themed Lego. Please vote for me.

Doesn't Nintendo already have a licensing contract with Mega Blocks? I'm sure I've seen bags with various Mario characters figures.

Posted by Morgan19 in United States, 04 May 2012 13:11

As an alternative to all these licensed things... What if an old LEGO theme made it to 10,000 on Cuusoo? Black Falcons, Classic Space, heck even Fabuland might be interesting for them to consider again. Any of those would get my vote.

Posted by pstrickler27 in United States, 04 May 2012 13:14

@Morgan19; I'd love to see the Bionicle line continued http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/8380#
There have been many great non-licensed themes over the years. It seems Cuusoo creaters don't have the imagination to create new ones.

@ Norgan19 So right. I would love some new Classic space and return of the Black Falcons :) I wasn't around for those awesome sets and way too collectable now days.

After reading the comments, I am afraid of saying that I am very nostalgic and eager for this theme....

Posted by oddtodd in United States, 04 May 2012 14:01

In Japan, Lego builds models based on scientific research. Then they come to America, and we get three video games and two movies. That seems like a sad commentary on American cultural values.

Posted by yellowcastle in United States, 04 May 2012 14:19

The Cuusoo Beta version is open to everyone, not just the U.S. And now that there are quite a few submissions, it makes only sense that the "Popular" themes would most quickly rise to the top. I'd be curious what the Hayabusa and Shinkai were actually competing against. You can't forget that each successful submission can only really be judged against the level of its concurrent competition as well as on the platform structure at the time.

Posted by rosney in United States, 04 May 2012 14:37

Cuusoo is turning out to be a disaster imho.

Posted by snoboarder31 in United States, 04 May 2012 14:47

...wha... what on earth is up with all the hate?
I can see why people would dislike the idea of the Lego Winchester Pub, but... Zelda = disaster??? why would anyone think that?

Posted by Bumblepants in Cameroon, 04 May 2012 14:59

I find the Zelda submission frustrating just because it is all renderings. Build something and take a picture!

Posted by emilewski in United Kingdom, 04 May 2012 14:59

OK, OK. I just voted for the Modular Western project. I am not really into Western theme and probably would not get it, but I do agree that it would make a great theme in general and the set looks great. So I hope my one vote will get it one step closer to serious consideration.

I have zero interest in a Zelda theme personally.

I am concerned that Cuusoo could become just a themed popularity contest. Maybe some good ideas will come out of it though. As long as TLG picks and chooses what reaches the 10,000 votes for consideration and make things that really makes sense.

Posted by copperwonder96 in United States, 04 May 2012 14:59

Yeah, I'm disappointed with the Cuusoo Model. Ban License themes!

Posted by Trandoshan in Canada, 04 May 2012 15:31

I saw this on IGN this morning. It's no surprise that it got the needed votes.

Still, although I love Zelda, none of that looks very appealing to me.

Posted by homelesshomie in United States, 04 May 2012 15:34

i think everyone should ignore how great the idea looks and support things based on the idea alone.

Posted by yellowcastle in United States, 04 May 2012 15:42

With Cuusoo - fans get a voice on set and theme ideas, licensed or not
Without Cuusoo - fans get little if any voice on set and theme ideas, licensed or not

Explain to me again why we're hating on it?

Posted by alorian in United States, 04 May 2012 15:47

I'll be honest, I voted for both of the projects. I am a huge Zelda fan, and Mingles' figures and props look really nice. But Ragaru's Zelda project not only has nice-looking minifigs, but amazing set prototypes to boot. (I'm sorry, that organ set is just not as remarkable. There's not even a /triforce/ in that scene, only the most iconic thing in the whole series.)

Ragaru's set amassed a ton of votes in a short period, and I don't want to say Mingles does not have a good project and worked hard for votes as well. But Mingles' project has been up longer, and is the one with the signal boosts and all the non-lego attention. So it gets the critical votes, though of the two it might not be the best representation of Legend of Zelda in brick form. If people are getting frustrated, it's probably because this scenario reveals a crippling flaw in Cuusoo. Not only was a superlative project overlooked for one that was just very good, but it is yet another licensed theme. The AOFLs driving this discussion are pretty overloaded on the licenses already, and in flat competition with new ideas, the new ideas flounder. Same thing's happening at the movies, honestly.

For every licensed set I vote for on Cuusoo, I deliberately find two non-licensed ones to support. It's not like it's hard to find good projects. The anger and the backlash coming off of this news is not, I suspect, due to people hating Legend of Zelda or Cuusoo. They're just tired of seeing Cuusoo trip up on its flaws, tired of licensed themes, tired of the popularity contests. They want nice new things to build, not fandom-of-the-hour fads. And so do I.

Whatever Zelda set is made, I will buy. But deep down I will hope for non-copyrighted castles, and historical themes, and things I never thought of to do with bricks, like that ball maze. If Cuusoo doesn't limit the licensed themes soon, or require more votes for things that need licenses and less for those that don't, the whole project with fail. And that would be a shame, and a loss all around.

Posted by meyerc13 in United States, 04 May 2012 16:27

I'm starting to think that Cuusoo should change to more of a contest system. Something like this:

-Acquire some minimum number of votes to have your set entered into the next voting round (let's say 5,000 to set the bar high enough). LEGO could review the sets at that time to see if they are appropriate, if a license is feasible, etc.

Then, once a month/quarter/year/whatever LEGO puts all of the sets that passed the initial vote and review into a second round of voting. Whatever set gets the most votes wins. To make it more interesting, you could give people a number of votes equal to the number of months they've had an account on Cuusoo. That would give those who are LEGO fans and more likely to buy product more votes and those who saw something K00L on facebook and just registered today less say since they probably aren't as likely to follow through on actually purchasing a set.

Seems like this type of system would satisfy a lot of the criticisms of the current Cuusoo model. Plus, LEGO could synch up the second round of voting with their release schedule, so that they wouldn't have three get approved in as many weeks, but only one approved in six months at other times. If they want to release two a year, hold two votes per year.

Posted by LegoC10 in United States, 04 May 2012 16:42

YES!! Finally! I can't wait to see this set be made. I've been waiting for Legend of Zelda legos for several years!

@yellowcastle
Cuussoo is a Flash Mob popularity contest supported by niche social networks. It seems hardly organic. If I knew the ideas were rigged, why would I vote? Here's how you get an idea through on CUUSSOO: Find a popular licensed them, Tweet the intellectual property owner to get their support, post your unoriginal idea, get 10K in less than 4 weeks! Cuussoo has it's own Super Packs!

It will be months, maybe years before a brilliant, original idea makes it into the 10K circle. That is the only good of Cuussoo, maybe TLG sees this in the trends and ignores the spikes from the CUUSSOO "my little Pony" Super Packs.

Posted by EveryNowAndZen in United States, 04 May 2012 18:28

Glad to see I'm not the only one tired of liscences being all that shows up. Isn't the point of Lego creating anything you can imagine? Why limit yourself to things that have already been done?
On the note of this particular model: Eh. I enjoyed Zelda as a kid, but this offers little play and even less rebuild value.

Posted by yellowcastle in United States, 04 May 2012 18:34

@CuWonder

First, who says it has to be organic? Second, I think the modular Western Town is fantastic and the only niche social network seemingly supporting it is us AFOLs. There's no rigging here nor is there any cap on the number of submissions that can reach the point of LEGO review. I have no issues with throwing everything up against the wall to see what sticks. I don't know minecraft from a hole in the wall and yet I think the resulting LEGO set is pretty neat. Who cares if their fans pushed it through? If LEGO makes the decision to build it into a set, then more power to all involved. IMO, this Beta has been a great success. In short time, there will be half dozen new ideas submitted LEGO review with one of them already made into a set.

Remind me again how this is terrible.

If you're only interested in "brilliant, original" sets, then perhaps you should build one yourself? That is, as I recall, the best thing about LEGO....we're only limited by our imaginations.

I, for one, will continue to support any/all submissions that I find interesting, be they a Western Saloon or a Firefly class transport ship.

Posted by Starwarsgeek500 in United States, 04 May 2012 19:27

It really sucks though that cookie-cutter stuff like this gets accepted, and not stuff like the Space Marines (been on since last August and only 3000 votes). The way this is going, we'll be seeing 'My Little Pony' sets before an actual original idea comes out. Also, a major design flaw in CUUSOO is that the accepted stuff usually only gets one set, even if it is intended to be a theme. Looks like the LEGO Company is hating on fan-made sets.

Support the Space Marines on CUUSOO!

Posted by Lama in United States, 04 May 2012 19:36

Everyone STOP HATING!! If you don't like don't support. Zelda will be awesome along with Eve and bttf.
And the hayubasa and shinaki made it because when it was china exclusive you only needed 1k to be made.
The only reason I don't like this set is that there are sooo many haters. The haters are killing future lego products.
Why are you even on cuuso and brickset if your just going to hate on lego? There is no logic there? Go lego cuuso and long live cuuso.

Posted by Snowtrooper119 in Australia, 04 May 2012 20:20

Don't forget that the set may not pass the review stage, Lego just recently denied the winchester so it may not pass the review stage.

Posted by Brickmeister1138 in United States, 04 May 2012 22:55

I think Zelda would make an excellent Lego theme, especially since the tone of the games seems to be in line with the kind of things Lego does. Zelda appeals to many different age ranges, since the games are played by kids, teenagers and adults.
I do say that those potential weapons are WAY too detailed. A master sword made done via over-molding(blue/purple and silver) like the Dagger in the POP sets would more than satisfy most fans.
I also agree that Lego should try to control the liscences on CUUSOO somehow. Lego should look at both liscenced and non-liscenced ideas on CUUSOO. Increasing the number of votes needed for a liscence and/or decreasing the number for origional proposals may help.

Posted by kenhew in Malaysia, 05 May 2012 00:08

Some of you seem to think CUUSOO is a failure because the ones that garnered the most votes do not appeal to you or not 'up there' in terms of design and build. To me, CUUSOO is a lot like American Idol. Most of the time, the best singers are not always the ones with the most votes, but the ones that are most popular with the audience. Maybe it's their personality, their looks, or may even be they just happen to be in the same age group as the most actively voting demographics, who knows? But the fact is, it's based on popular vote. Just like democracy, it must cater to the majority, even if the results are not what you wanted. In an ideal world, yes, modular western town would have 10000 votes in no time, logically. But in a real world, a celebrity endorsement, a legion of online game playing fans, and children of the 80s, they are the ones that determine the results. Many AFOLs here think we're significant enough in the LEGO demographics to get the results we wanted but clearly, and statistically-backed too, that's not the case. Perhaps we can look at CUUSOO as a gateway for those not into LEGO yet to get into it since it's got something that appeal to them, who otherwise wouldn't even think of buying any LEGO in the first place.

Posted by Mickitat in Germany, 05 May 2012 04:46

I just wish they would put up new guidelines for CUUSOO stating "no stuff that needs us to buy a license". This would solve all the problems that have arisen so far.

Posted by namekuji in New Zealand, 05 May 2012 06:26

A classic example of 'to see the forest for the trees'

There is beautiful potential in both licensed and non-licensed themes. Perhaps the Cuusoo platform should introduce a forum for them both with requirements for them respectively. The Cuusoo platform is a well overdue invitation to the general public for the realization of all Lego designers, young and old, that their models might one day be included in the never ending history of one of the most superb applications of human creativity. Are the licensed themes creative?- Yes and no. Do we need a forum for unlicensed themes? - Certainly YES! Will people vote for unlicensed themes as often as general creative themes- Well...we'll leave that answer to the products of our society (but I think you already know the answer to that in the short term).

In answer to the thread, Zelda would make a fantastic theme, yet many more would too. As to which would have greater value is a question which could only be answered by the inevitable result.

Licensed themes- Wake up legO - The Community Needs You (to listen and ACT)!
Un-licensed themes- Get building. We have much work to do....but we'll win!...catch you on the flipside.

Wow, I am so happy that this got 10000 votes! I grew up with the Legend of Zelda games and Lego.
The combination of the two is something I have strongly desired for a very, very long time.

@Starwarsgeek500

I fail to see how one of the most recognizable and oldest videogame series ever is "cookie-cutter". In my mind, the new fad of "Space Marines" (Halo, Dead Space, etc) qualifies as cookie-cutter.

Posted by itsaturkey in United States, 06 May 2012 20:12

^ Saying that Halo is cookie-cutter is a completely grotesque and false statement. Halo pretty much is the reason that X-Box is alive, as well as FPS, and innovated the modern gaming style we see today. It's practically the SW of the Movie Industry or the Beatles of music. And Halo came out in 2001, that hardly qualifies as a new fad.
Anywho, back on topic:
Interesting. I am optimistic in seeing what Lego will do with this. I've enjoyed playing Zelda on several occasions and I wonder (If Lego agrees to make these) whether they will be a set or a minifig pack. If it's a minifig pack I see a potential of more detailed designs.

Posted by Vycoul in United States, 06 May 2012 22:43

Well, if saying that Halo is cookie-cutter is completely grotesque, then saying the same of Legend of Zelda must be utter blasphemy.
Though, I admit that I may have been wrong in grouping Halo in with the rush of Brown Gray and Bloom FPSs.
It seems the series did implement some good things into the genre, but I don't agree that Halo is anything near being the Star Wars or Beatles of gaming. That title goes to the Super Mario games hands down, no questions asked.
When people think of video games, they think of Mario.

But I'm getting off topic, and forgot to ask the question I came here for:
Does anyone think a Cuusoo project winner has a chance of becoming more then one set?
I would be completely trilled with a single Zelda set, but I think it would be quite hard encompass the series with only one set.
I guess they could pick a single game to represent though.

Commenting has ended on this article.
