How many LEGO pieces do you own?

Posted by Huw, 09 Jun 2009 17:24. Filed under Brickset.

I'm pleased to announce the second significant enhancement to the site this week: take a look at your 'My sets' page and you'll notice that it now calculates the total number of parts you have in your collection!

This often requested feature has been made possible thanks to Dan at BrickLink who has once again allowed Brickset to use BrickLink's data, in this case piece counts for some 5000 sets. You should now find that, unless you have a lot of old, obscure, sets, we have a piece count for 99% of the sets in your collection which means that the calculation should be pretty much spot on.

Piece counts are included in your collection export file so if you want to do further analysis on the data you can load it into Excel and do so.

For the record, it claims I have 281,889 pieces in 1367 sets, and only 10 of them don't have a piece count.

WOW! Amazing! But... the info is covered under "My Minifigs"! HELP! Also, great collection Huw! Over 280,000 pieces! Also, it says how many different sets I have! Brickset grows very fast...

Press <Ctrl>-F5 in to reload the page, it sounds as if your browser is using a cached copy of the stylesheet.

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 09 Jun 2009 17:43

@Huw: Thanks! It works! It says I have 15395 pieces! That's a lot... for me at least! Great feature!

Posted by julencin2000 in Spain, 09 Jun 2009 17:45

Works fine! What a week, Huw! Thanks for the enhancements.

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 09 Jun 2009 17:45

Also, you own more than 1300 sets?!? Woah... That's a lot!

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 09 Jun 2009 17:50

Another thing: What's Excel? Is it free? What does it do?

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 09 Jun 2009 17:53

Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet for number-crunching (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spreadsheet) and it's certainly not free, but there are free alternatives like Open Office, http://www.openoffice.org/.

This site just keeps getting better, but it still has much it can do. Many of your sets still need information such as price, not all of them have the piece count, etc, etc. If you had the prices for everything another nice feature would be to show the worth of your collection. I think with some effort by some individuals/volunteers along with the lego collectors guide brickset could easily near a more completeness to its database.

Posted by Batmaniam in Canada, 09 Jun 2009 18:00

Nice, I was hoping that you would do this soon. I have 12,845 pieces! That is a lot more than I thought! I still have more, because I haven't put all of my sets up yet.

Posted by mareleurs in United States, 09 Jun 2009 18:21

Cool feature - I tried figuring this out once but lost interest. Quick question though - it says"

You own 88 sets (81 different).

We have piece counts for 130 of them. Using that data, together with your set list, we have calculated that you own 26671 pieces!

Where does the 130 come from? Is that including the sets I want?

Posted by Lego-Dude in Canada, 09 Jun 2009 18:22

WOW I'm surprised, this according to your calculations I have 37721 pieces form 253 sets, with nine of my sets without piece counts! This is a great new feature! Also to price feature would be a good idea, I would like to know how much my collection costs.

Posted by blabla in Canada, 09 Jun 2009 18:24

Great feature, but it says I own 252 sets, 344 of which are inventoried. Is there something wrong with it?

Posted by moop2000 in United States, 09 Jun 2009 18:40

Hey, it says I have 62 sets, and it has inventories for 183 of them. Sorry for breaking it! :)

Posted by 18000pieces in United States, 09 Jun 2009 19:37

Hmmm... 179 of my sets are inventoried. Problem is, I own 171. Something's gone screwy here...
Anyways, if I can trust it, my name is now obsolete. I have a little over 20000 pieces. I guess until I make some better MOCs that makes be a KABOB.

Posted by chrisdog121411 in United States, 09 Jun 2009 20:01

I have a problem with excel. Every time I open the file I see sets I dont own and or some on wanted list. Huw can you fix it please?

Posted by secondbase_pro in United States, 09 Jun 2009 20:51

i have allittle over 500,000 pieces

Posted by Retsnom Kcor in United States, 09 Jun 2009 21:38

We have piece counts for 856 of them. Using that data, together with your set list, we have..... ??? That's all it's showing me.....

Never mind, i copy and pasted something that wasn't there and it said: that data, together with your set list, we have calculated that you own 95725 pieces!

Using that data, together with your set list, we have calculated that you own 95725 pieces!

Posted by chucky12 in Australia, 09 Jun 2009 21:46

Huw, you keep outdoing yourself every single time. Next thing you know we will have set instructions in pdf........or not :p How hard is it to take the next step and categorise each piece in your collection (a la peeron)?

Posted by Kobacca in United States, 09 Jun 2009 23:10

Hmm... cool feature.

Posted by Roger Workman in United States, 09 Jun 2009 23:16

I have screwy results as well:

"You own 145 sets (143 different).

We have piece counts for 203 of them. Using that data, together with your set list, we have calculated that you own 15380 pieces!"

Is this taking into account Super Models such as 6862 that are instructions only and Value Packs that have separate listings for each set they contain?

Posted by LEGOfan2009 in United States, 09 Jun 2009 23:23

Awesome Feature! Huw! I love it! Oh, BTW I have 12,540 parts, in the sets that are acounted for! HEHEHEHEHhehehe! A friend gave me (I estimate) about 3,000 parts for Christmas. (I have not determined what sets they are.)

P.S. Do you know whay it says "84 sets (81 different)...We have piece counts for 88 of them." !?!?!?!?

Posted by bluemoose in United Kingdom, 10 Jun 2009 01:49

There appears to be a little issue in this initial release; give Huw time to look at the code & I'm sure it will get fixed very quickly.

Ian

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 10 Jun 2009 02:08

Thanks bluemoose, yes that was the case. I think I've fixed it now!

Posted by gjhartog in Netherlands, 10 Jun 2009 02:15

Nice feature! This site is getting better by the week!

Thanks for the effort!

(And according to that, I have 60.347 pieces, eventhough 12 sets are not accounted for...) I didn't know I had that much! :-D

Posted by HoMa in United States, 10 Jun 2009 02:42

Thanks Huw!

Another great feature at brickset! Well done.

My numbers are:

You own 1466 sets (835 different).
We have piece counts for 807 of them. Using that data, together with your set list, we have calculated that you own 371612 pieces!

Besides this there were many visits to the LEGOLAND (Günzburg) pick-a-brick/factory and some BrickLink orders. So I don't know if I own more then a million pieces? Would be cool to know the exact numbers ...

Again, great work Huw,
HoMa

Posted by roberternst in Austria, 10 Jun 2009 05:30

71.012, but only 592 of 698 Sets have a piece count, so I hope I´ll do have the 100.000! :-)
Great job, Huw, thanks!

Posted by Zixx in United States, 10 Jun 2009 05:36

Would it be possible to sort them by either sealed or opened sets? A button to click to sort one or the other?

Really nice feature that is fun to play with, and way more interesting than the ol pen and paper method :)

Posted by clone commander trainrex in United States, 10 Jun 2009 05:58

You own 81 sets (75 different sets).
We have piece counts for 73 of them. Using that data, together with your set list, we have calculated that you own 17915 pieces!

it works quite well. How old do the sets have to be to not count them.

also I have some sets that I just can't find on brickset even if I own them.

Posted by turtlespit in Australia, 10 Jun 2009 06:26

Huw - just curious, are there any 'brick millionaire' collections recorded on Brickset? I imagine that would be a sorting nightmare...

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 10 Jun 2009 06:38

An interesting question. I will look later and see what the highest figure is, although I won't reveal the owner.

Posted by Mr.Dunlop in Australia, 10 Jun 2009 08:12

Looking at the "Did You Know..." box on the front page, I'm trying to imagine the colossal number of pieces between all Brickseters! Again, Huw, words can barely describe how fantastic this site is! :)

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 10 Jun 2009 08:27

@Mr.Dunlop, if I can calculate it without database timeouts, I'll add it!

Posted by gratefulnat in Switzerland, 10 Jun 2009 10:04

Gosh darn it Huw, the work you do for all of us LEGOnians is just incredible. Just can't thank you enough. Brickset is for me as a hopeless collector the premier site regarding LEGO. Aplause and fireworks for you, and anyone involved in helping you.

Once again, thanks!!

p.s. Without wanting to get to personal, are you perchance a workaholic? :)

Posted by polyester in United States, 10 Jun 2009 10:06

This is really cool. I think it would be fantastic to have some stats pages on this - top 100 Brickset collections, average # of pieces per set / per theme / per year, fun things like that.

Then again I'm an analyst by profession and not a coder, so I have no idea how (or why) you'd want to make this work. :)

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 10 Jun 2009 10:22

@greatfulnat, no, I don't consider it work, I enjoy it. Your kind words and the small income generated every time you buy something via the eBay, Amazon and LEGOshop.com links help immensely :-)

@polyester, that would be easily done but would those in the top 100 appreciate their status being known? Averages etc. are no problem, I'll see what I can do...

Posted by Denver_80203 in United States, 10 Jun 2009 10:31

Oh no it doesn't include my random ebay, pick a brick or brick link purchases!! 77,000 is way low..

I guess I just go count em!

Posted by gruetzmacherd in United States, 10 Jun 2009 11:47

Huw, thank you so much for this feature. It is great!

Without sounding too greedy :) I would like to second the Zixx's request for two quantity fields -- one for opened sets and one for new/sealed sets. That would be very handy for me! (Of course the minifig and part counts would have to be duplicated also, which might make this feature too unwieldy to be worth it...)

Thanks again for all your hard work!

Dominic

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 10 Jun 2009 12:03

Mine says 47811 for my piece count of the 168 sets you could get a piece count from!

But it says I have a duplicate set, but it didn't say that before this new feature came on. Perhaps nothing to worry about and a simple mistake on my part?

P.S. You do not have to reply to this, bluemoose, Huw, or anybody else.

Posted by Zwing in United Kingdom, 10 Jun 2009 13:01

I have 40169 pieces from 140 sets. I also have another 6 sets which were not included in the piece count

Posted by bamaker in United States, 10 Jun 2009 13:24

Looks great, but I noticed that the information for the 626 Large Green Baseplate is incorrect -- it shows that it has 37 pieces. Looking at Bricklink there is a 626 Red Cross Helicopter, released in 1978, that has 37 pieces; appears the info. for these two sets has gotten crossed up.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 10 Jun 2009 13:32

Right then Mr.Dunlop. Take a look at the 'Did you know' panel now. 215 MILLION pieces!

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 10 Jun 2009 13:33

@bamaker, yes there are some anomalies like that. I'm currently thinking how to resolve them. Watch this space...

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 10 Jun 2009 13:53

@turtlespit, I've had a look at the most pieces owned by a member and the figure is not credible because he/she only owns 118 different sets so I suspect they've been putting ridiculously high numbers in the quantity field.

The highest credible number is 461,000. About 250 people have over 100,000 pieces and the average per member is around 14,000.

Posted by zero0 in United States, 10 Jun 2009 13:57

i have 39588 in 196 sets (i always wanted to know how many pieces i had in my 10 boxes now i dont have to count) and huw ever thought of letting usa upload photos of our own lego creations or is that more suited for flickr?

Posted by iabstract in United States, 10 Jun 2009 16:08

Awesome. Simply awesome.

Is there any way to figure out which sets don't have inventories or aren't counted?

245 out of 248 unique sets for over 77k pieces and 666 minifigs (ominous). Oh man. Better never let my wife see this. She'd make me have a garage sale.

Posted by Batmaniam in Canada, 10 Jun 2009 16:57

Okay, thanks for fixing the problem. Now I have 12,939 pieces from 75 sets, with only one that isn't counted. Nice!

Posted by pushin10s in United States, 10 Jun 2009 17:39

The recent site additions are great. Brickset is not only a great site to check out Lego, but also a great resource. I have quite a few sets and I do not have all them built. It would be great to be able to distinguish between sets that a user has built and the ones still sitting in the box. Again, THANKS for the great site.

Posted by Yoda 56 in United States, 10 Jun 2009 18:00

I have 23985 pieces!

Posted by The Green Brick Giant in United States, 10 Jun 2009 18:03

Neat, but I don't think it's correct (Or I have missed a lit of sets I own and don't have listed yet). It says I owe 60,000 pieces, however I counted them myself in 2004 (using set counts and not pieces) and I counted 45,000 just from the most recent sets back then.

Posted by Topsy Cret in Sweden, 11 Jun 2009 04:46

Great addition, but if I'm really low, something must be terribly wrong with my manual piece count (you don't wanna know).

Posted by snoboarder31 in United States, 11 Jun 2009 08:34

Nice, you guys should totally come up with a way to estimate the dollar or pound value of our collections. That'd be awesome.

Posted by skipp in Netherlands, 11 Jun 2009 10:11

Wow, I've always been told my collections so big, but when I see the others, mine seems tiny!

You own 376 sets (365 different).

We have piece counts for 361 of them. Using that data, together with your set list, we have calculated that you own 56532 pieces!

Posted by Tb96 in Sweden, 11 Jun 2009 10:31

Well I just have 20699, but I'm only 11

Posted by BioFreak877 in United States, 11 Jun 2009 10:58

I haven't looked yet but I have about four or five sets with 1,000 pieces, so I hope to be average. By the way, Huw, how long have you been colleceting Lego? 20 years?

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 11 Jun 2009 11:18

14 years

Posted by Republic Commando Sev in United States, 11 Jun 2009 13:12

It says I have 24,046 pieces.
I know I have thousands more then that, because when I first got into Lego's, I bought 30lbs of Lego's off Ebay, and I also have a ton of Lego's from friends who gave them to me when they stopped collecting Lego's.

yay now I don't have to count every piece to find out how many I have. This new piece count system is great.

I have more than 40700, and I'm only 10!:) I also have 364 minifigs in 231 sets.
P.S. Please try to get Piece counts for the older sets.
P.S.S. This is my first comment!

I have 3605 pieces! But...I sorta have more counting the pieces my friends give me.

Posted by Greyface in United States, 11 Jun 2009 16:27

The only trouble with this program is that I don't have anywhere close to my set/piece number. The only sets I mark are the sets I have built; I have a ton more pieces from sets that I have "trashed" or never took the time to build. Also, I trade with my friends.

Posted by commander_cody in Finland, 11 Jun 2009 16:45

7410 pieces in 82 sets , not so much , but I don't buy lego so often right now , I've more been saving money for bigger sets ...

Posted by ShatteredGnome in United States, 11 Jun 2009 17:05

You own 97 sets (95 different).
We have piece counts for 89 of them. Using that data, together with your set list, we have calculated that you own 18469 pieces!

Wow! I've always wanted to count how many pieces that I have! Now it's automatic! Thanks, Huw!
By the way, are the extra pieces counted in those figures, or the number on the box?

Posted by legowomen1980p in United States, 11 Jun 2009 17:37

This feature is great.. only one problem.. what about all the individual pieces I bought at Brick link and e-bay.. this doesn't tell me this.. I wish it did.. maybe if you had a feature to catalog individual pieces along with sets for a final calculation it would be great..

On Brick Link I know I found this one piece that I wanted a lot for 1 penny each, so I bought a thousand of them.. how do I add them to my collection?

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 11 Jun 2009 17:42

@legowomen1980p, and everyone else who's asked: This feature will only ever show you the number of parts you've acquired from sets. I have no intention of starting a parts database and in any case who counts every single piece they've ever bought from LEGOLand, LEGO brand stores, BrickLink or wherever. I know I don't!

If you do, you'll just have to record them in a spreadsheet or something and add the two numbers together.

@ShatteredGnome7675, the number will be that given by LEGO for recent sets. The data imported from BrickLink is probably more accurate and the result of someone counting them. I suspect your total figure is no more than 1% out, not worth worrying about.

Posted by bluemoose in United Kingdom, 11 Jun 2009 17:42

Brickset is a set oriented site; peeron is a brick oriented site - if you want to keep track of individual bricks, I'd suggest using Peeron's system.

Anyway thanks a ton, I LOVE this site

Posted by chucky12 in Australia, 11 Jun 2009 22:44

82588 pcs in 230 sets (avg=379/set): Brickset
vs.
81883 pcs in 218 sets (avg=375/set): Peeron

Pretty close if you ask me. Good job, Huw, you're a god!

Posted by Mr.Dunlop in Australia, 12 Jun 2009 00:17

Huw, it's like you're a genie from a lamp who can grant unlimited wishes! To say "awesome work" would be a terrible understatement, but I'm running out of other phrases to show my appreciation!

I'm trying to imagine this massive structure or town of 217,000,000 pieces! :P

Posted by lotr builder in United States, 12 Jun 2009 04:14

This feature is great... and to think I just wasted the past few days, without knowing about this, counting my collection on Brick Link, by hand... :p Ah well, I hope that this is more accurate. It says I have 169 sets, where I counted 143 bye 'hand' and it has 135 of them inventoried... and it says I have 27,857 pieces... so my collection, if this it's correct, is several thousand pieces larger than I thought it was. Hooray for technology! (Gotta love this feature - now it's way easier to update my collection. :D) :)
