LEGO Show world record mosaicAfter three busy days at EventCity the LEGO Show has broken the world record for the largest LEGO mosaic.

The show, which welcomed 9,500 people over the bank holiday weekend (5 – 7 May), enlisted the aid of visitors to the show, and a few celebrity friends, to help build the 143.91m2 image, which contained 660,000 LEGO bricks.

In keeping with the sporting fever that is gripping the UK during 2012, the mosaic’s image showcased sports related LEGO minifigures from some of LEGO’s series of collectable minifigures.

In total more than 2,000 squares were completed at the show, with lots of visitors sharing their mosaic squares on Twitter, delighted to have been part of a world record.

Warren Elsmore, show director, said: “We have enjoyed a fantastic weekend at the LEGO Show 2012, and breaking the world record has just topped it off. I’d like to say a big thanks to all the visitors who have helped throughout the weekend, and the celebrities who made squares prior to the show.”

Celebrities included star of Star Trek: The Next Generation and The Big Bang Theory Wil Wheaton, comedian Peter Kay, C4 Sunday Brunch presenter Tim Lovejoy, former Olympic athlete and TV personality Iwan Thomas MBE, and the Breakfast show team at Key 103. Plus European medallist hurdler Andrew Pozzy, World Champion hurdler Dai Greene, Commonwealth Silver Medallist Eilidh Child, European Junior Champion Lawrence Clarke, and Rory Stewart OBE MP.

LEGO Show world record mosaic Each of the celebrities made their squares prior to the show. The squares were signed by each of the stars and will be auctioned in aid of Key 103’s Cash for Kids charity.

The record, officially entitled ‘the largest image built with interlocking plastic bricks’, previously stood at 112m2, and was made by DK Publishing House (UK) in London, UK in 2010.

    ---

The image shows Warren Elsmore and a local schoolgirl adding the last tile. So you can see the finished mosiac a little better I've corrected the perspective on the version on the right.

I had little part to play in its construction: all I did was correct a tile or two that had been done incorrectly :-)

Peter Kay?! He's a LEGO fan?! O_O

A gladiator is a "sports related LEGO minifigure"? (But Firefly is too graphic.)

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 08 May 2012 06:01

@BJMdotLEGO: Gladiator fights were Ancient Rome's definition of "sport", along with chariot racing. :P

Yay! It was pretty much finished (or in the process of being finished) when I got there, so a shame I couldn't get involved. Would have been nice to be able to see the whole thing from this angle, but guess that wouldn't have been possible without a viewing platform. An idea for next year!

What was the special Monday announcement? What did I miss?

Did they run out of blue? Seems a strange choice to switch the footballers top to red and white stripes.

Only if this would fit on my bedroom wall ;)

This is quite an achievement and looks great. Now lets wait for another opportunity to beat it :)

WOW, simply amazing !

They did indeed run out of blue. In fact they ran out fairly early so perhaps an error was made with the brick provision. Plates had to be scavenged to complete the lower left corner of the "L" on "Lego Show", and everything after that was either colour swapped (as with the footballer's top) or blue was begged, borrowed and stolen to make do (mainly the surfer's wave).

The vast majority of the mosaic was 2x2 plates (in various colours) on large base boards. When I was there on Monday afternoon they were resorting to using smaller base boards due to shortages and some colours we using 2x2 blocks. So if you stood at ground level you could see some slightly odd "3D" effects in the last few feet or the picture.

Not sure if there'll be a Lego Show retrospective post - but as a general comment: It was significantly better this year for being held at event city. Well done to the organising team.

All I can say is - very cool! I wish I could have attended (it's a bit far from my home in Central Iowa...)

Enjoyed taking part. I hope you didn't have to correct my contribution!

When's the auction?

Wish I could have gone... :P

@lovaquero: I have a friend who likes LEGO and moved to Iowa last October.

Had a great day on Sunday.. and good to be part of a world record. I ended up buying R2-D2 (set 10225)... so it was an expensive trip!

The funny thing:
The soccer player on lower edge never made it -this way- into the CMF series.
He's wearing the wrong shirt. 8-)

The footballer's t-shirt isn't the only part of blue that was swapped for red - look at the cheerleader's pompom :)

I enjoyed Saturday so much I went back on Monday :) The sight of so many people hunting for brown and blue Lego pieces was hilarious, and the finished mosaic looked fantastic.
