Lord of the Rings set reviews coming up!

You will recall that the LotR sets were unvelied at AFOLCON last weekend. The sets on display were auctioned off at the end of the show and I now have them in my posession!

I wasn't even at the auction, so I didn't win them myself but Darren at Gizmocom and Tim at Brick Buy Brick did manage to secure them all and they've sent them to me to review and photograph.

I'll be doing my best to work my way through them in the coming days, but in the meantime these minifig checklists from the back of the instructions should whet your appetite:

Tim is offering Brickset users a 5% discount in his BrickLink store Brick Buy Brick, and will also do so in his new web toy shop, ToyAddict, when it launches in June. Just mention Brickset in the notes when you check out!

Darren is also offering 5% discount on orders under £50 and 10% on orders over £50 from his BrickLink store Gizmocom, until the official release day of the LotR sets. So, get shopping!

Huw...what an awesome job you have.

Posted by alorian in United States, 11 May 2012 09:31

I'll be getting a random fleshie girl head to turn one of those spare Rohan soldiers into Eowyn; it's really ridiculous that they couldn't manage to get even one female figure in the line yet. I know there aren't many in the movies and even less in the books, but Eowyn defeating the Witch King is a key moment and would be an awesome set. And come on, Arwen v/s the Ringwraiths at the ford? Big splashy explosions of trans bricks? Fantastic. (I know it's supposed to be Glorfindel if they went with the book a little closer, but these are movie-sets and that would be a sweet little scene from the movie version.)

Fingers crossed that the next wave will include some of the strong ladies. I expect LotR to be popular with the female AOFLs like HP is; it would be nice if the company would consider that in their set design. Meanwhile, I'll do what we're supposed to do with our bricks: make it myself.

Please review the set with the troll first!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Gandalf1 in United States, 11 May 2012 09:57

Awesome!

I'll be getting 9470 first of all, and I'll probably use the figs and make a Mount Doom diorama sort of thing.

Posted by gardenom in United States, 11 May 2012 09:59

@ alorian. tell me about it. haldir is a minor book character with a puffed up movie role and he gets his own minifig. and who the heck is lurtz? there isnt faramir either; maybe the final big set with be the battle of minas tirith and it will be big like the 400$ death star.

thought the cave troll looks awesome. i will own all of these.

@halcyon305, it's hard but someone has to do it :-)

Posted by jimmer in United States, 11 May 2012 10:19

Wow, I'm planning to get these all... I'll see if I can show a little restraint, but I doubt it. The thing that hit me was, wow, there are a ton of uruk hai! 8 regular buggers and then the beserker and lurtz as well? That's awesome... I just wish there were a few more rohan soldiers or even men of gondor (we'll see those later) to balance things out a little bit... Oh well, I'm psyched to see these on the shelves soon! I have even waited on the tempting R2-D2 so that I can be set to get started on LOTR. 11+ years of waiting and they're just around the corner!

I'm surprised there wasn't a bigger deal over these at the lego show! I don't know what they did for the unveiling but when I was there they were just all crammed in a plastic cabinet. No explanation, or release info etc. Ok there was a big character banner, but could have easily walked passed the display. These are a big deal! Look forward to the reviews.

I see these sets are for sale at toysrus.com . When will they sell at Lego?

They are also for sale at Target online and much cheaper than at TRU.

Aiming for the Fellowship, and the Ringwraiths... seeing how LEGO has planned this, I'll probably end up with all of them, though.

^ Give me a chance! I should have a photo review of one set up later today.

Posted by gfones in United States, 11 May 2012 11:33

I hope they make a really cool dragon for Smaug when they do their Hobbit line.

Posted by goldfish in United Kingdom, 11 May 2012 11:34

superb.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 11 May 2012 13:33

By all means although there already some for specific years and we are gradually adding packaging details into the main set list.

Posted by headbrick in United States, 11 May 2012 14:16

Can't wait to get my hands on some of these!

@Huw: which set will you be reviewing first?

Posted by Doctor Leg O'Brick in United Kingdom, 11 May 2012 14:59

I look forward to your reviews! One question, witch might be considered rude, is how much did you have to pay to get them so early at AFOLCON? Please don't take that the wrong way, Im just curious. I thought you could possibly use the LOTR sets/minifigures to make Asgard from the Thor film/comics.

Posted by nameloc in United Kingdom, 11 May 2012 15:09

what wories me about this lotr fever is this happened for release of indy and that didnt even run for two years, im hoping the missing caracters means a longer run than 18 minths with sets to cover the missing scenes.

i mean where is saruman, grima, the prancing pony, bridge over the brnadywine, these all from the firs tthe two books/films.

havent even seen the hobbit yet, if done right this could run as long as star wars, although i have a sinking feeling we gonna see very little after this initial burst

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 11 May 2012 15:11

^^ They are on loan to me.

Posted by caperberry in United Kingdom, 11 May 2012 16:09

Well jel!

Posted by Bumblepants in Cameroon, 11 May 2012 17:14

@nameloc, the Hobbit film is split in two, part 1 this Dec. and part 2 the following Dec. So there should be two full years of LotR at minimum.

Posted by bigw1974 in United States, 11 May 2012 18:12

I don't think LOTR fans are nearly the cash cows Star Wars fans are...in fact, I don't think anyone is.

Posted by AitchJay in Australia, 11 May 2012 19:27

Personally SW doesn't interest me much, I have maybe 3 or 4 sets, but I'll be collecting all the LotR and maybe double up on a few. Really excited about this.

Posted by Brickmeister1138 in United States, 12 May 2012 03:06

We LOTR fans are pretty devoted... but Star Wars fans likely outnumber the LOTR fans 10 to 1. I, personally, am both.

Will these be released to the general public anytime in the new future?

I also want a longer LOTR run... I still want to see Lego versions of Saruman, Galadriel, Elrond, Old Bilbo and other characters. More ROTK and TTT sets would be nice...

Posted by kenhew in Malaysia, 12 May 2012 03:07

^^^LOTR will surely surpass SW in terms of being a cash cow for TLG. LOTR caters to not only fans of the series, but also fans of Castle as well. I've never bought a single SW set (not into the space fantasy genre) but I may pick up some LOTR sets if I find they go nice with my castle sets
