LEGO Inside Tour exclusive for 2012

  • LEGO Inside Tour exclusive for 2012

Posted by Huw, 26 May 2012 17:18. Filed under New sets.

It's not every day I find something LEGO-newsworthy in my Facebook news feed, but today this image of the set given to attendees of the LEGO Inside Tours at Billund this year appeared (taken by Eddie Chow, via Suzanne Rich Eaton).

It looks as if, like last year's Moulding Machines, it's designed by the lovely Mel Caddick :-)

That looks awesome!!!!

Posted by keithkram in United Kingdom, 26 May 2012 17:34

This should not have been added to the database yet as its not fare on the people who still have to go on the inside tour as this will now not be the nice surprise it should be for them.

Posted by brankell5566 in Canada, 26 May 2012 17:39

It looks beautiful.

Posted by gusmoore in Mexico, 26 May 2012 17:46

what about those who would never have access to it?? stop complaining there!!

Posted by bricksan in United Kingdom, 26 May 2012 17:52

Would love to own this set :(

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 26 May 2012 17:53

@Keith, I take it you're going this year, then :-)

Posted by keithkram in United Kingdom, 26 May 2012 18:01

I'm not complaining about the set, but when you go on the inside tour you sign a non disclosure agreement not to reveal anything about the tour as it spoils it for the 50 people who still have to take part this year, it can be revealed but not until the tours are complete.

@huw, can you remove this until after the third tour has taken place, I have just got back from the tour and would have really been annoyed to know what set I was getting before it was presented to me at the end, and I know the Lego staff who organised the tour will be very upset to find out one of the participants has spoilt the surprise for the rest of the inside tour participants.

@gusmore this is as bad as posting a watermarked image of a set before it is released, if you went on the tour I am sure you would not be happy to have the surprise spoilt for yourself so stop being selfish.

Posted by keithkram in United Kingdom, 26 May 2012 18:06

@huw I have just returned today from the first tour and don't think this is fare to the 50 people who still have not been

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 26 May 2012 18:09

OK I will remove it for now but should it appear on other sites, using an image that was not taken from here (I will know because I had to edit it), I will reinstate.

I'm not totally happy removing it: after all it is now out in the wild, acquired legitmiately and if the photographer did sign an NDA (did you have to?) then that's between him and the company, and nobody else.

Posted by keithkram in United Kingdom, 26 May 2012 18:13

Huw, thank you, its not me being mean, it's just the inside tour is a great experience and the surprise of the set at the end is all part of this experience.

Posted by keithkram in United Kingdom, 26 May 2012 18:17

Yes everyone on the tour has to sign an NDA before the tour starts or you can not take part.

Posted by Graysmith in Sweden, 26 May 2012 18:30

Might as well delete the post seeing as there's nothing of value in it now.

Posted by minicoop4 in United States, 26 May 2012 20:24

I won't enter the debate about the image. But I saw it earlier, and thought "what good timing". I had spent about 10 minutes this morning trying to locate a photo online of the LIT set for this year.

Posted by fox171171 in United States, 26 May 2012 20:36

I would like to see it myself; I won't have a chance to go on the tour. That said, I totally understand that it would be nice for it to be a surprise for those who can go. I can live without seeing it for now.

Posted by Alien24 in Australia, 26 May 2012 20:44

Good old google images has nabbed it... nice set :)

Posted by itsaturkey in United States, 26 May 2012 20:49

Correct me if I'm wrong but if you're such a big fan that you'd go to the Lego Factory, wouldn't you think that they'd know about this? Just saying....

Posted by typo in United States, 26 May 2012 21:25

Wow, that is a nice set...Too bad it's super exclusive...

@keithkram,
"Fair" and "fare" are not the same word...

Posted by Brickman193 in Australia, 26 May 2012 22:16

This post now means diddly-squat. Deletion, maybe?

Posted by The Guy With The Bricks in United States, 26 May 2012 23:09

@Huw, perhaps you could post a *spoiler* warning in the story headline and have the set image only come up if you click on the link? This way you would only see it if you wanted to.

Posted by 1265 in United States, 26 May 2012 23:41

Don't succumb to the elitists....show the pictures.

Posted by OuterRimTradingCo. in Australia, 27 May 2012 01:51

Thanks to Google images, I've had a look and it's quite a cute little set. In terms of displaying the image or not, I think the needs of the million or so of us unlucky enough to not be able to go on the inside tour outweigh the need of the 50 who are lucky enough to attend to maintain a "nice surprise" at the end. They should be thankful that they are in the position to attend an inside tour and receive something at the end instead of getting precious about everyone else being able to see it before they get it into their possession anyway.

Sensitive lego peeps

Posted by emmtwosix in United States, 27 May 2012 02:14

You can count me amongst the millions, nay, billions of people "unlucky" enough to not be invited on an inside tour this year, however, I can assure you, I do not *need* to see this picture before the final tour is given, nor does anyone else. There are a lot of people, myself included, who would like (i.e. want) to see this picture, but again, I can assure you, there is no need here (unless the point is to post "first!" as the kids like to do) We can wait. Well, I can, at least...others may need to learn patience.

Posted by kenhew in Malaysia, 27 May 2012 03:00

I second not showing the picture, after reading keith's explaination. I can respect that. However, this is Huw's site and it's really entirely up to him whether he wants to show it or not, and for keith to demand (it sounded like a demand to me, not so much as a polite request ) the removal irks me slightly. Anyway, don't have to be so hung up on it, after all one can just easily find the images on the net. Unless this entire post gets deleted might as well, I don't really see the point.

Well, do you care about your users, the ones that support you and wouldn't want the surprise spoiling?
Or do you care about being one of the first sites with the new set news on?

Wouldn't really have taken much effort to label the post SPOILER: and only have the image viewable by a link.

Posted by kbsig106 in United States, 27 May 2012 08:00

This post is USELESS without the pictures and of course with the complaining, last time I checked it's just a toy...

Posted by keithkram in United Kingdom, 27 May 2012 08:50

To all those people that have complained about the image being removed, you are not real fans of lego, you are just selfish, and you make me ashamed to be a LEGO fan. All you care about is what you want and not what others want, I have this set so asking for the picture to be removed was not for my benefit, but I thought that those who are yet to go on the tour should not have it spoilt for them just because selfish people want to see a photo, and you dont NEED to see this set, you may WANT to see it but there is a big difference in life betwen what you NEED and what you WANT.

For all those people who understand that it spoils it for people who are going on the tour (and this is not just people who pay for the tour, but also people who are going thanks to LEGO's charitable work) you are the real LEGO fans and the ones that make me proud to be a LEGO fan.

I am happy to provide detailed pictures of this set once the last tour has finished on 15th June (and the organisers of the LIT are happy for the pictures to be made available once it no longer spoils it for those that have not attended it yet this year).

So thats my RANT.

Posted by defiant.nx74205 in United States, 27 May 2012 09:25

@Keithkram,
Maybe you should reconsider your position...
You may be from the UK, but you still misspelled "lego", "dont", and "typo's" (as plural for "typo" - which is actually quite awesomely ironic).

Also this entire argument is moot in the age of Google and image caching.

Posted by keithkram in United Kingdom, 27 May 2012 09:35

@Ronny

point taken, but i was annoyed, and I admit I can not spell

i admit you can find these images if you search the internet, but theres a difference between someone searching for them and them being placed on one of the most popular fan web sites which a fan could find without looking and have their inside tour suprise spoilt, I appreciate the fact that Huw has removed the image and so are LEGO.

In future I wont say anything because on a site like this because I am so disapointed with all the selfish and negative criticism about the fact that all I asked was for the suprise not to be spoilt for the 50 people who have yet to go on this years inside tour, and this is waht is wrong with the information age we live in, its to easy for information to be leaked and negative comments to be posted, its why I dont normally say a thing.

Posted by defiant.nx74205 in United States, 27 May 2012 09:45

@keithkram,
I was just giving you crap.
However, to quote Mr. Spock: "The needs to the many outweigh the needs to the few".

Personally, I wouldn't mind the surprise being "spoilt" for me. When I'll go to the tour, I'll do it for the tour itself, not the surprise at the end.

Posted by LostInTranslation in United Kingdom, 27 May 2012 10:30

^ Again, you're missing the point - you don't "need" to see it. I agree with keithkram. I think Huw should wait for 3 weeks for the last tour to take place and then post the image. Will it really impact you in any way to have to wait? No. Could it have a negative effect for those 50 people yet to go on the trip. Of course. Don't ruin something that they are rightly going to be über-excited about.
Remember - Patience is the key to joy :P

Posted by roamingstudio in Switzerland, 27 May 2012 10:52

I agree with all of Keithkram's statements; and would also be disappointed if the 'surprise' was blown before hand. I'm sure all the rants will now cause enough noise that it will flood other groups and further disturb those who have not yet gone on the tour.

If you sign an NDA - it means 'Non Disclosure Agreement'. It does not mean 'Now Distribute Accordingly [images]'.

Posted by Modok in United States, 27 May 2012 11:16

@LostInTranslation - do you make that same argument when other watermarked imaged of sets are leaked? I don't recall seeing people argue that leaks of other watermarked sets are improper or a breach of agreement, or that we should just wait until the approved images come out. Heck, I'm sure there are people who believe that NO watermarked image should ever be shown because it ruins the "surprise" of the set's official announcement, or finding it in the wild.

A scoop is a scoop, and this is a news site--leaks are between the leaker and Lego.

The "wants" of the many vs. the few should be balanced. If the handful of people going on the tour don't want their expensive surprise ruined, that's cool and I understand...just put a spoiler warning on the link and don't post the image on the home page. Now you don't have to see or click on it. But to argue that NO ONE should have the ability to see an *available* image because YOU don't want to is kind of ridiculous. It's like saying that someone shouldn't post an un-official early review of a movie because you just can't avoid it and don't want it to ruin the movie.

@keithkram - Given your demand to remove the image, do you not see the irony in claiming that "All you care about is what you want and not what others want"? I think many of us could say the same for you. Hopefully we'd do it more politely, though.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 27 May 2012 11:25

I will leave the image off the site until the last tour has ended out of courtesy to all involved. But I will just say...

- We posted pictures and news of last year's model mid-May (http://www.brickset.com/news/article/?ID=1280) which would have been after the first tour of the year and nothing untoward happened as far as I know: certainly nobody from LEGO, or future attendees, contacted me about it.

- We are only having this discussion at all because one of the Brickset 'regulars' has been on the first tour. If he hadn't nobody would have batted an eyelid.

- We are assuming that the 50 still to go are Brickset readers: of course I'd like to think every LEGO fan reads the site but I know that's not the case and I suspect less than a handful of that 50 actually do.

- How far should should I take this 'not spoiling the surprise'? Perhaps I shouldn't post pictures or news of unreleased sets because it will spoil the surprise when you see them on the shelf for the first time...

Posted by LostInTranslation in United Kingdom, 27 May 2012 11:50

@modok - I actually don't ever look at watermarked or unofficial YouTube videos, for example. Anyway this site does not condone the posting of watermarked images, does it? I guess a spoiler warning could have worked in this case though...

@huw - I think that this site and its administrators have great integrity and the site has benefited from maintaining a good relationship with TLG by respecting their wishes in not posting confidential images. I would class this as a confidential image, and though it was not you who broke the NDA, I, personally, don't think it would be right to distribute it and potentially jeopardise that relationship. (And yes, upset that handful of people going on the tour). IMO this set is a little different to sets that will be generally released, due to the exclusivity.
I'm sure many will disagree with me but hey ho. That's my two penn'orth.

Posted by yellowcastle in United States, 27 May 2012 12:21

I also support pulling the image for a couple of weeks. It won't negatively affect any of us, it's only temporary and I like the idea of helping keep it a "surprise" for visitors as much as anyone still can in the Internet age. All that being said, @keithkram, I would have preferred if this had been presented more as a friendly request and less as a moralistic demand. Additionally, calling people "fake fans of LEGO" is just icing on the "poor form" cake.

Posted by rocao in United States, 27 May 2012 12:47

I actually think withholding the image could have a negative effect. We are a LEGO news and collecting site. If competing sites take the story and image and run with it while we sit on the sidelines, we jeopardize our position and risk losing readership.

Posted by keithkram in United Kingdom, 27 May 2012 13:01

@yellowcastle Yes, I accept my wording does seem demanding, not requesting, and I should have worded my request better, I did send a seperate e-mail to Huw where I think and hope I worded better. I can only put the poor wording down to the shock of seeing the main news item on brickset (the first site I checked when back from Billund to catch up on what I had missed) was about a set I had only received 24 hours earlier and had been told to keep secret until after the final tour had ended so as not to spoil it for others.

Posted by flump in United Kingdom, 27 May 2012 13:15

Whilst reading the earlier posts, I was already drafting what I'd say the matter. Everything I was about to write has been summed up well by @Huw.

Had he not already confirmed to remove the content, rendering the article useless, I would have suggested perhaps 'Spoiler' be written across where the picture ought to be so that it could only be seen or read by deliberately clicking on it to open.

If the lucky people left to attend the tour don't want to see it, don't look. As 'confidential' as it may be, TLG as far as I'm aware, haven't asked for it to be removed - says alot I think.

Brickset likes to bring 'new' news to its members. If we're going to start removing and filtering news articles or pictures just to avoid the off-chance of upsetting a few dozen punters then we might as well shut up shop now. Given the set is pretty pants compared with last year's, I'd suggest anybody would be more upset for that reason rather than the 'surprise being spoilt'.

Posted by Modok in United States, 27 May 2012 13:32

^ Well said.

Posted by murrayhenson in Poland, 27 May 2012 13:40

@Huw ...You should do exactly whatever your internal ethical/moral compass tells you to do. This rule applies in all situations.

I should also note that 12000 DKK is a boatload of cash (or at least is for me; I live and work in Poland).

Posted by Legoguy29 in United States, 27 May 2012 14:52

This whole conversation is actually quite ridiculous. Some guy calling fans who want to see the picture fake...
Others claiming this need to see a picture, like they're drop dead from not seeing it.
More and more people getting up in arms because the picture isn't here. Go to Google and search, "Lego Inside Tour 2012", then click on images. It'll most likely the first photo, was for me.
I hardly see how knowing what set you are getting will ruin the Tour. Sure, surprises are nice and all, but that is just stupid.

Being from the States, the Tour will more than likely ellude me, but if I were going on the tour and I discovered what the set was, it wouldn't change a thing. If anything, I may enjoy the tour more. Not miss anything because I was thinking and daydreaming about what the set is. Maybe that's just me...

Either way, Huw, you should do whatever you want. The perks of being the boss. If you want to throw up the picture again, spoiler tag it, put a picture of a unicorn there instead, so be it.

Posted by yellowcastle in United States, 27 May 2012 15:38

rocao said "If competing sites take the story and image and run with it while we sit on the sidelines, we jeopardize our position and risk losing readership."
*****************
I respectfully disagree with this idea. It has been the fall back position of many a news service over the years and has served as a defacto rationalization for printing anything/everything. While theres certainly no scandalous story or pseudo news here, I still find it to be a weak argument and too pragmatic for my tastes. It's like the "confidential" images stance. I'd like to think we don't lose readership because we refuse to post, provide or link to them. Additionally, I like to think we don't allow them moreso because we think it's wrong and less so because we fear blowback from TLG.

Posted by MinifigHQ in Australia, 27 May 2012 23:13

This is Brickset yes? The world's best resource for Lego news and yet an image that is out there on the web and is not watermarked is not here for Lego fans to see..... Sure all of us would love to go on an inside tour but that is in a perfect world, I doubt that the majority of people who go on these tours do so for the "set" at the end more so the actual tour, the set would just be a bonus. Like you said Huw, no problems last year so it shouldn't be a problem this year. Lego haven't asked you to remove the image (I believe reading through the comments) so they obviously have no issue with it and neither should you(Huw).
Well at least the tour is getting plenty of attention on the news page :)
