The Lord of the Rings minifig gallery is now online

  • The Lord of the Rings minifig gallery is now online

Posted by Huw, 30 May 2012 11:37. Filed under Brickset.

Today I have been photographing Lord of the Rings minifigs for the LotR minifig gallery.

Plese visit the gallery to see them in all their glory. I've just noticed that I've shown the 'angry face' on a few of them which I don't normally do. This is because I didn't assemble them myself. Still, it adds a bit of variety.

Before anyone asks I haven't added the Cave Troll because, well, he's hardly a minifig is he, even if BrickLink thinks he is...

Update: I have bowed to pressure, the troll is now in :-)

Shouldn't it be "Fellowship of the Ring" first, "Dark Forces" second and "Others" third in the list? :P

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 30 May 2012 11:52

I probably need a better name for 'others', something like 'goodies', but then we'd need to exclude Gollom. Any ideas?

Great photography as always Huw!

Couldn't you just switch the face around?

Posted by CapnRex101 in United Kingdom, 30 May 2012 12:09

I think it would be a good idea to put reversible faces in the top corner of each shot, not sure how easy that would be, but it would look great.

Very cool.

Not cool is the fact that they won't be released here for another two months. LEGO really needs to work on worldwide release capability, particularly with hotly-anticipated licensed themes. It bonafidely sucks having to wait that long knowing others have their stores overflowing with them.

Cool gallery, but when will the superheroes one be out?

Posted by Evil_Do0d in United Kingdom, 30 May 2012 12:33

@Huw since we're getting more sets next year (with more new minifigs), I'd suggest classifying Eomer, Theoden and the Rohan soldier into a category called 'Men of Rohan' and leave Gollum in others, because he doesn't really belong anywhere else.

I'd also suggest making a category called 'Elves' for Haldir, as I'm fairly sure we'll get Galadriel, Elrond and Arwen in the future who can go here too.

^ Let's cross that bridge when we come to it, shall we? :)

>Couldn't you just switch the face around?

Yes, but now I've photographed them all and post-processed them it's a PITA to go back and re-do them. It took about 3 hours to do them all this morning.

Posted by itsaturkey in United States, 30 May 2012 12:46

How about a 'Good forces', as I'm sure many more are to come, and a 'Others', for which Gollom is the only member for now. I'm sure there will be more 'others' to come with the Hobbit, after reading the book I can say there are lots of strange creatures that have a chance of being Lego-fied and not being associated with any other faction.
Could you add the Moria Troll? He's kind of like a Macro-figure. Oh and of course great pictures Huw!

EDIT: Oh never mind about the troll I just read the article :P Although does that mean you will also exclude the Hulk Macro-figure?

What is the difference between the two Frodo's with the cape? I can't tell. Gallery looks great!

Posted by Darth Lurtz in United States, 30 May 2012 13:32

^^ One cape is Gray while the other is green.

Cool! Again, really good photo's from a good quality! Very nice!

FAN-TAS-TIC!!!!! I can't wait for these to come out.

Amazing pics as usual Huw, thank you.

The catagories are alright for now and depending on what comes out next maybe just do them in their races; Men, Elves, Dwarfs, Hobbits, etc....

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 30 May 2012 14:34

@itsaturkey, good point, well made. The troll is in. Isn't it ugly :-)

Posted by Anak in Hungary, 30 May 2012 14:35

For categories maybe you can use: forces of good and forces of evil...and that's all. And we already have the fellowship group.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 30 May 2012 14:36

^ Where would Gollum go, he's a bit between the two isn't he :-)

Posted by Anak in Hungary, 30 May 2012 14:44

Put the "Slinker" in the forces of good, and the "Stinker" into the other one :)
He has a personality for each.

Posted by Goony in Denmark, 30 May 2012 15:01

You could call the good side Fellowship of the Ring and allies...

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 30 May 2012 15:22

Huw, did you make the troll image large on purpose, so that it can actually scare you? :P

Posted by CapnRex101 in United Kingdom, 30 May 2012 15:33

*Looks at gallery, scrolls down, thinking that is it reaches the Uruk-Hai, notices more of page, sees troll, screams.*

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 30 May 2012 15:42

I try and make the gallery images to scale and I believe that it is reproduced roughly to scale with the minifigs. It's about twice the height of one.

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 30 May 2012 15:54

@Huw: Oh, right. Still, it's pretty impressive... :P

Posted by Plasmodium in United Kingdom, 30 May 2012 15:57

"Oh. They brought a cave troll" :D Just had to say it, given that no-one else has!

Posted by itsaturkey in United States, 30 May 2012 17:09

Thanks Huw!

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 30 May 2012 17:10

Haha, the TROLL is in. :P

Posted by PaulTR in United States, 30 May 2012 18:07

Wonderful gallery, as always! Keep up the good work, Huw!

Posted by LEGOKip in United States, 30 May 2012 20:07

You've been trolled by a troll!
(My son's sense of humor.)

All kidding aside, fantastic work Huw.

Posted by scholte23 in Australia, 31 May 2012 02:11

I just spotted 9471-Uruk-Hai Army in a Toys'r'us store in Australia.

Posted by UtarEmpire in United States, 31 May 2012 07:28

Still slightly baffled as to why Haldir comes with a cloak but not Legolas. Oh well. Great pictures as always.

One question:

Why is Sam called by his full name, "Sawise Gamgee", but Pippin only "Pippin", not, "Peregrin Took"? (Same applies to "Meriadoc Brandybuck")

If anything you'd expect Sam's name to be shortened, because I'd say he plays the bigger part in the stories.

Personally, I think you should go for all short names, but that's a matter of opinion, it's consistancy that counts.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 31 May 2012 12:17

^ The names come from the boxes, and BrickLink.

Posted by Ad the brickmaster in United Kingdom, 31 May 2012 12:39

^ Oh ok. Seems a bit stange of LEGO, wouldn't you say?

Posted by BlackFalconBirdman in United States, 31 May 2012 18:55

Nice gallery. Many thanks.

I like the "trolls" section, haha, but I don't see many figures going into there. I think it could be combined in 'others' or better yet, 'dark forces'. Did you keep it separate due to the size?
