SDCC Captain Marvel minifig?

blueduck37 has uncovered evidence that suggests that a Captain Marvel Shazam minifig will be available at the upcoming San Diego Comic Con. From this schedule (3:00-4:00):

"Join ever-informed, fancentric WAC Podcast hosts George Feltenstein, Matthew Patterson, and DW Ferranti as they give fans a look at the upcoming DVD release of the popular 1970s series Shazam! The series’ own Billy Batson, Michael Gray, will be on hand, and an exclusive, limited-edition Shazam! LEGO figure will be awarded to a lucky number of fans in attendance."

I didn't even know what Shazam! was until I Googled it, but it appears that the central character was called Captain Marvel (but isn't any more--see the comments), pictured. Despite his name, it seems this is a DC property. Confused? I certainly am, but I suspect you'll put me right in the comments...

LEGO has confirmed, in the forum, that there 'will be exclusives' and that they will have an official presence at both San Diego and New York Comic Con this year.

I had recieved earlier texts from SDCC about schedules and programming but never had a chance to check them out, I basically wanted to see if LEGO was giving away exclusives again.

I don't know much about Shazam and Captain Marvel either, but if they make him an exclusive minfigure I'm definitely going to try and get him!

Hmm, sounds interesting! Whats even more interesting is that I never knew about a New York Comic-Con. Only San Diego I knew about. I bet the figs will have a great price on Bricklink or Ebay!

I just got the Green Lantern and Batman Comic-Con exclusives and they weren't cheap!

Even more confusing is that Captain Marvel isn't originally a DC character having originally appeared in Fawcett Comics in 1940.
As for an exclusive Shazam figure-this will be highly sought after and a character that the customizers might fill the gap in fan collections.
So will there be a Mary Marvel figure eventually?

Back story time wooo! Captain Marvel was orginally a fawcett comic character. The company were bought out in the fifties and as per dc policy at the time he was put on a seperate world (known as the multi verse). When the multi verse was collapsed in infinate crisis he was brought to earth and now inhabits earth and is a member of the justice league.

The character is actually a child called billy. In the new dc comic series (his backstory can be found in the justice league comics) he gainshis powers through a encounter with a magic creature who deems him worthy. In all his orgins stories he is considered as worthy of these great powers. He is often an orphan or living with relatives. but when he uses his powers he turns into an adult

He has made several dc animation apperances. Most recently in young justice but also in batman superman public enimies and occastionally in the justice league unlimited

What next...Condor Man?

Posted by Zordboy in Australia, 30 Jun 2012 06:24

Thing is ... there are two Captain Marvels. One of them is the Shazam guy who is owned by DC. The other Captain Marvel is actually a Marvel character. The two aren't remotely connected to each other (aside from a memorable moment during an inter-company crossover), and DC's Marvel is actually more well-known and popular than Marvel's Marvel.

Does any of that make sense? :)

Marvel's "Captain Marvel" is an alien known as "Mar-Vell" that fits in with the Avengers continuity.

If you want to make things even worse, there are actually several Marvel "Captain Marvels". Some have even been dead for a time before deciding to not be dead anymore.

Actually I feel that DC Captain Marvel is relatively well-known within the DC Universe. He played a big role in Kingdom Come, right?

To expand on Redbulgivesuwind's answer, Fawcett's Captain Marvel appeared in comics and serials until they were sued by DC in 1952 alleging that Captain Marvel was a rip-off of Superman (he has similar powers). DC finally licensed Fawcett's Captain Marvel in the early 1970s but in the interim Marvel had copyrighted 'Captain Marvel' meaning that the original Fawcett Captain Marvel was unable to use his character name as the title of his comic.

Instead, DC opted to use the title 'Shazam', which is the magic word Billy Batson uses to change to Captain Marvel. It's an acronym made of the gods and characters that give Billy his powers - Solomon (wisdom), Hercules (strength), Atlas (stamina), Zeus (power, which is a bit vague), Achilles (courage) and Mercury (speed). There are a bunch of spin off characters - Mary Marvel, Captain Marvel Jr, Hoppy the Marvel Bunny (it was the 50s...), and the brief-lived Lieutenant Marvels.

In the new rebooted DC continuity, the character has simply been renamed Shazam to avoid confusion with a new look - but I assume this will be the traditional Big Red Cheese look.

(And UtarEmpire, yes he had a massive role in Kingdom Come - great story!)

Thanks for clarifying that, everyone. ^ That explains why the original source didn't mention his 'old' name, then.

I need to learn more about my superheroes. :-P

Posted by meyerc13 in United States, 30 Jun 2012 11:19

I'd love to have one of these. I remember having a plastic Shazam mug when I was a kid.

Posted by ledmouse in United States, 30 Jun 2012 11:22

And the most recent version of the Captain Marvel character, published by Marvel Comics, is a female. Her name is Carol Danvers. She was Ms. Marvel, but apparently she's being promoted to captain.

@richl...spot on man. That's the exact story behind Shazam/Capt. Marvel. Zeus' power I thought was always meant to be his lightning power.

Darn!!! The one time my dad isn't able to get us Comic-Con tickets is when they give out all these exclusives! D:

Posted by LegoCloneFanatic in United States, 30 Jun 2012 14:02

Is it going to be the same idea as the 5 heroes pack Shazam??? Because I was already making a Shazam custom based on that!! If they do come out with him I want him so bad!!!! I am a huge Shazam Fan!! D:

This is gonna of for a bunch n eBay!

Posted by brix in United Kingdom, 30 Jun 2012 14:42

Just wandered, if you've won the lego raptor chase set, would you know by now? :)

Posted by vwong19 in United States, 30 Jun 2012 17:08

Interesting but I am not too optimistic about getting one. As I recall room 25ABC seats about 500-1000 people instead of some of the other halls that seat 5000-10000. The small rooms only seat 200. They could give them to all attendees, raffle or give them to fans that ask qestions (dislike).

Posted by Titan in United States, 30 Jun 2012 18:20

No offense to the Shazam fans out there, but thank goodness it's not one of the main DC characters that's getting this treatment....

Posted by Margot in United States, 30 Jun 2012 20:09

Anyone who was a kid in the '70s remembers Shazam! http://youtu.be/7KfFx_UZ5ZU

Posted by talorien in United States, 01 Jul 2012 00:01

@Margot - You are so right!

I had practically forgotten about the show and the comic, this is a nice refresher course. I can imagine the figure with the same costume from the TV show and maybe an alternate Billy figure. Shazam!

I'm very glad that Lego continues to join with the rest of the toy companies in ceaselessly indulging the privileged group of scalpers and hoarders who attend SDCC each year. Nothing truly rewards longtime fans worldwide like offering a rare exclusive only to people attending a convention. That will teach all of us a lesson for not renting hotels, booking flights, buying admission tickets and standing in line for hours so that we, too, can flip our exclusives on eBay for a 500% profit.

Posted by nightmarevalkyrie in United States, 01 Jul 2012 05:11

Ah shoot, another figure I will have to bid on eBay for my collection hopefully this won't be the only figure for the Lego DC superheroes wave I'm really looking forward to a green lantern set with Sinestro and a flash set and hopefully marvel will be releasing some exclusive figures as well a maybe a Venom figure, carnage, or even a Dr. Strange figure hopefully they keep making sets since they automatically will obtain money from the comic book fans.

Posted by Mickitat in Germany, 01 Jul 2012 05:53

These "exclusives" are so annyoing, really.

Posted by nightmarevalkyrie in United States, 01 Jul 2012 08:48

@Mickitat I love the exclusives since its a good way of seeing what Lego will be releasing soon (unless you have an inside source) in the months to follow and this exclusive that is going to be given at comic con probably means a second wave of superheroes sets. Dude if I lived in Germany I would annoyed at the fact that these exclusives are only in the US of A as well.

Posted by nightmarevalkyrie in United States, 01 Jul 2012 08:58

@Modok Well if you end up spending about 1800$ to go to comic con wouldn't you want to get some of your money back by getting exclusives and selling them later. Besides i you had received the SDCC Batman and Green Lantern figures last year would you or would you not try to invest your money back by posting them up on eBay or Bricklink to get your money. I've been collecting Lego sets since the 90s dude I get your frustration when a promo set that comes out in the SUN Uk newspaper won't be available in the US or that their won't be a Team USA minifigure collection even though a huge percentage of Lego's proifits come from the US. This is what makes us fans

Posted by homelesshomie in United States, 01 Jul 2012 09:46

Yeah i agree these exclusives are bull crap. I want to see new sets with green lantern and shazam in them and they can be a little different than the ones that people get at comic con.

Posted by clonetrooper02 in United Kingdom, 01 Jul 2012 10:51

If any one is going to SDCC and wouldnt mind getting one for me I would be grateful.
pleased message me if you can!! expenses covered.

Posted by Brickman193 in Australia, 01 Jul 2012 11:56

That feeling of frustration when you're an Australian collector who doesn't get the US Comic-Con exclusives or the Sun UK newspaper specials... :(

Posted by Modok in United States, 01 Jul 2012 14:25

@nightmarevalkyrie - See, that's exactly the problem. SDCC has turned into nothing more than an expensive admission ticket to getting valuable eBay loot. It's like saying you spent a lot of money to take a trip to the Grand Canyon or Disney, so you're entitled to something valuable so you can make your money back. No, you're not. You paid for an *event*--to have a good time, see something special, and attend an exciting annual event most of us will never be able to see. You're not "entitled" to anything beyond that. Yet the toy companies continue to reward this already privileged few by heaping exclusives on them.

As far as things like the Sun exclusives or the Olympic minifigs, those are highly annoying, too. But at least the only entry barrier to getting those is simply living in a country and buying a newspaper. It's not as if you have to live in the UK *and* pay handsomely for the right to purchase them.

Posted by nightmarevalkyrie in United States, 01 Jul 2012 17:02

@Modok I get what your saying to enjoy the event but when your a broke college student you have to try and get some of your money back and these privileged few are mainly basement nerds who stay and save up for this event every year. I'm lucky that I won't have to pay for a hotel since I know someone in the area and hal the time when the exclusives are given most of the time people don't know what there worth, the way I got my iron man and captain america was by seeing somebody post them on eBay for 25$ buy it now luckily i had lightning buying skills.

@homelesshomie Agree with you all they way

@brickmaster47 Welcome to the lego collecting club.

I grew up watching Captain Marvel on Saturday mornings a long time ago. I wonder if he will come with an RV (Motor Home) that he is able to climb on top of and say "shazam." LOL
