    The 10229 WVC was officially unveiled at BrickFair today. Here's the press release:

    Get cosy in the Winter Village Cottage!

    Continuing the winter series, build the Winter Village Cottage for a perfect holiday home. Seat Grandpa snugly by the fireplace with his newspaper as you help Dad to put up the tree, then  bake a feast in the kitchen with Mom! When it’s time to stock up the storage shed with firewood, bring the kids for a ride with Dad on the sled watch him cut the wood with his chain-saw deep in the forest. When the snow gets really deep, clear the road with the snowplough, take all of the kids skiing or build an igloo to play in. There’s no cosier place to spend long, frosty nights!

    • Includes 8 minifigures: mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, 3 children and snowplow driver with assorted accessories
    • Features cottage, storage shed, igloo, street lamp, sled and snowplough

I fond the last part of the video rather funny: 'Lamp post new in black' came out in the last winter set and the 'Brick bricks' came out in January!

I do have to say that the video was very well done, and I do have a far more positive viewpoint on the set, especially the tool shed. Before I thought it was just a really bad element, but seeing it now in full view, it really is one of my favorite components. The minifigs I also felt looked a bit better than I expected, and my kids will have a good time playing with them. I know some aren't fans of all the minifigs, but that really has been one of my favorite parts of this winter line. I love that they have so many female characters and overall number of minifigs. It really helps make the scene (and adds a ton to the playability).

Lovely model but I would have preferred them to keep these sets a little smaller and therefore less expensive. Having a larger building may overshadow the others somewhat. Nevertheless, the set looks excellent and will be a must have for me, if only to complete the collection if nothing else.

On another topic, can anybody think of any more ideas for these winter village models?

^ I agree. As lovely as this model is, I just can't afford it around christmas time. And I also have the same worry of it overshadowing the others so, having the price confirmed, this set is a definite no for me :(

Definately on the wanted list.
I managed to get the 1st set in this series on Brick Friday for $20 off at the Lego Store. Hopefully they will have the second one on sale this year!

^ I think Grandma is the one with the sand yellow hair - it makes her look a little younger, but it works as if it's blonde hair turning gray/white. i remember my Gram looking like that when I was younger.

@CapnRex101 - There are plenty of other ideas. Really, anything can be winter village-appropriate, as long as its quaint. There could be a general store, a restaurant, a candy store, a clothing boutique, etc. I also think a train station would be nice, because I like the idea of the villagers' friends and family arriving to spend the holidays together.

As for this set, I like it better after seeing the video, but $100 is steep. I appreciated the value we used to get in winter village sets for under $100. Not every Lego set has to be huge, especially when you're putting together a village. I'm just not sure a cottage, of all things, is worth the larger size and higher price. (Now, if it was Dix's large and fantastic hotel from Contest II, that'd be another story.)

@Modok - I disagree. I think that this set is intended to be more of a "capstone" set, kind of like the Town Hall for the modulars. And you still get great value PPP-wise, $0.067 with 8 minifigures. I personally think this set looks fantastic, has some great features, and will make an exquisite addition to my winter/holiday village.

The cottage looks good, lots of nice details inside and out. The little sled is clever and the igloo is a fun extra. All good really, except...

What?!? Huh? Fugly? That "car" is a truck... and it looks like it is based off of the 1940s/50s Dodge Power Wagon! Awesome!!! It is one of the best parts of the set!

Google "Dodge Power Wagon" and see what you get!

@Modok - True, but it may be tricky to turn something like a restaurant in to a quaint village type building, same with a boutique. A sweet shop would be a good idea though, albeit somewhat similar to the bakery. The station would be great, but perhaps even more expensive than this one and I am not sure how well it would fit in with the other small village type models released so far. I suppose we will have to wait and see...

Car, truck, whatever... The colours are nice but the shape is hideous.

As for future winter sets a church would be nice but unlikely. I'd put my money on a restaurant.

The Winter Village subtheme is of course just Lego's version of the widely available illuminated china Christmas villages, the leading manufacturer of which is Department 56.

A quick look at their website indicates that there are years of inspiration left in the winter village. Of the do-able stuff, it would be great to see a Guesthouse, Railway Station, Sweet Shop, Music Shop, Clock Maker, Bell tower/glockenspiel and (my personal favourites) a Cheese Shop and a Sausage Shop.

Of course there are also a lot of less likely candidates: Church, Brewery, Tavern, Hunting Lodge.

The other curious omission over the years is any form of Christmas market - it would have been a nice touch to have had a market by stealth with one stall each year, but all we have so far is the Christmas tree seller in WVB.

However, maybe the Winter Village Cottage is designed to be the closing set in the theme - the largest and most detailed as a final farewell...?

With regards to its size, once the WVC arrives in the village, both the WVB and the WTS will still be taller. My own view is that I really like the WVC, but am disappointed that the extra pieces/cost have gone into the design rather than playability. I'd happily sacrifice 'heavy snowfall' for something the kids can actually play with.

I hope the next one they do is some kind of central location, like a park or something. What I'd really like to see is a Church like the one in the contest, but I realize it's a futile hope. Besides that, a railroad station sounds really cool!

Just saw it in person at the Brick Fair. I was impressed and surprised. The building is substantially larger. The living room alone has more floor space than the entire flooring of the previous buildings. The kitchen is great but it is harder to access since there is a short ceiling for the bedroom above. The building seems built better as well. Not as fragile as the past ones.

I can see why it is $100 US money. It is worth it in Lego terms.

I talked to a couple of Lego employees and they said that this line continues to be hot and they expect it to continue well past this year.

Australian RRP is $150, which given how overpriced some sets are here, isn't too bad.
