2013: what we know

  • 2013: what we know

Posted by Huw, 16 Sep 2012 05:38. Filed under New sets.

I've added the list of sets found at Werst to the database, and as you'll see a pretty clear picture of what we can expect in 2013 is emerging. Here's how I see it:

    • Ninjago: 2013 is believed to be the last year of the theme and from the listing of next year's sets it appears that there will be no more spinners.
    • Legends Of Chima: From the picture of the DK book cover and the eBay listing, this appears to be based around some sort of half-human half-animal minifig hybrids (minifig body, animal head) and includes normal sets as well as some with a gaming element. The latter are presumably replacing the Ninjago spinners.
    • City: Rather disappointingly, the sets in the list for 2013 are all fire and police. Didn't we just have new fire and police sets this year?
    • Friends: It sounds as if the girls are branching out into sports and other pursuits. There appears to be some form of collectable bag series, which feature animals and their 'house'. It's possible that this what the sets 41017-41022 are, which were not listed at Werst.
    • Star Wars: I think we know all about the first wave of sets, and we've discussed them before.

    Now onto the rumours...

There's no word of other licensed themes, but I suspect we will see more Lord Of The Rings/Hobbit sets, although possibly not during the first part of the year.

There will be new Super Heroes to tie in with whatever movies are being released (there's another Iron Man due, amongst others, isn't there?)

There are also rumours of sets to tie in with the Disney Lone Ranger movie, which is set in the 'wild-west'. Given the history of tie-ins with less than spectacular Disney movies (e.g. Pirates of the Caribbean 4, Prince of Persia) I can believe this.

And, I almost forgot, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, heaven help us!

What else? Polar Explorer and Space Galaxy are also theme names that have been mentioned in rumours. I guess we'll have to wait and see on those...

Seeing as the information Pezdez (I think that's how you spell it) posted in the forum is correct, doesn't this mean that TMNT is practically true as well?
Next year is shaping up to be very awesome! Can't wait :D

Posted by supersympa in Sweden, 16 Sep 2012 06:05

just too much in my opinion...
I can't just buy everything that comes out...so instead have to make some choices...and at the end, I probably buy less...

Posted by M4444M44 in United States, 16 Sep 2012 06:10

There will be new "great vehicles" sets - a tanker, a cement truck and a flatbed tow truck. Also, while police and fire themed, there is a museum and house.

Posted by mwgjordan in Australia, 16 Sep 2012 06:12

Legends of Chima is the new Fabuland.

Posted by DarthZared in United Kingdom, 16 Sep 2012 06:34

Huw, do you know which Star Wars sets are Lego.com and retail exclusives? I understand the sadness with the loss of Ninjago, but I can't grasp it's concept. Anyway, I'm definitely psyched for the new CW sets, and if history is correct I can picture Republic Commandos next year!

Posted by CapnRex101 in United Kingdom, 16 Sep 2012 06:41

The Star Wars sets are fantastic in my opinion, as are the Super Heroes Minifigures which have been revealed. Legends of Chima sounds pretty dire to me, but I will try to reserve judgement until the actual sets are revealed. If Polar Explorer and Galaxy Quest turn out to be more than just rumours, I will be interested in those too.

that lone range western theme sonds good

Posted by Peter1975 in Netherlands, 16 Sep 2012 07:17

So no Castle, Western or Pirates sets? I'm still waiting for the news that CUSOO comes with the big Western set. Hope it'll arrive in 2013.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 16 Sep 2012 07:39

^ If Lone Ranger is on the cards, then the Cuusoo modular western town will be rejected, IMO.

Posted by alijoezac in United Kingdom, 16 Sep 2012 08:46

Mmm all very interesting, but what about SpongeBob? ;-)

Posted by Zordboy in Australia, 16 Sep 2012 09:13

I'm onboard for the TMNT, definitely. They're something I'm massively looking forward to, if the rumours are correct.

Posted by Plasmodium in United Kingdom, 16 Sep 2012 09:13

@DarthZared: Lego Republic Commandos would be simply awesome-but why do you say they would make them next year? Did they come into the CW show?

Posted by Starik20X7 in Australia, 16 Sep 2012 09:48

Pretty keen for the Museum set. Hanging for more news about Superheroes. Not so sure about the Polar theme anymore, seeing as that "2013 ?" poster teaser is for Chima, and after that I've not seen any evidence for an arctic theme... Space Galaxy sounds interesting though. I've also got my fingers crossed for more Heroica to be announced.

Posted by CM4S in United States, 16 Sep 2012 09:56

If I recall, Polar Express is now the Galaxy Theme. PE was a placeholder name.

Posted by Nightshroud99 in Canada, 16 Sep 2012 10:04

Now that I see all these new themes, I have to say, that's a lot...

Posted by Modok in United States, 16 Sep 2012 10:17

Galaxy Space is a pretty silly name. I hope that's a placeholder, too. Of course, if Lego's doing a new space theme, then the Cuusoo Space Marines may end up getting rejected. It's just too darn difficult to get anything through Cuusoo.

Anyway, there's clearly a hole in the lineup for an action/adventure theme to take the place of Monster Fighters, which took the place of Alien Conquest, which took the place of Pharaoh's Quest, etc., etc.

Posted by TheMinifigFreak in United States, 16 Sep 2012 10:20

I'm not excited for any of these new themes, I've always disliked Ninjago so I'll dislike Legend of Chima, TMNT I can't see ever being very good, and PE was supposedly a space holder for Galaxy Quest, and I've never bought or liked any other space themes before except Space Police, which was one of my all time favorite themes. I am excited for Super heroes and Hobbit though.

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 16 Sep 2012 10:36

"heaven help us!" for TMNT, eh? You aren't enthusiastic, right, Huw? :P

Posted by Ypres in Canada, 16 Sep 2012 10:36

I don't think those last three points fit into "What we know"... the whole point of rumours is that we "don't know". It just seems a little misleading given that most of this article is factual information containing set titles and information whereas the rumours are mere "working titles" pulled from god-knows-where. I think there's a good chance of Lego doing another one-shot Disney Licence, I don't think TMNT and Lego have a future, and the other titles don't have much for a point of origin.

Why would a retailer's catalog only have a theme name in it. I thought they were used to mention set names and prices so retailers could have an idea of what to stock in various quantities. I know sometimes Lego removes the pictures, but isn't is a waste of time to try and market something to a retailer when you don't even provide set information to them? Maybe one or two of the rumours is true, but I doubt their origin came from the retailer's catalog... unless someone can correct me.

Posted by spency13 in United States, 16 Sep 2012 10:53

In terms of Super Heroes we already know that we are getting a rather large Daily Bugle set with Spiderman, JJJ, Dr. Doom, Nova and Beetle.

Posted by Legolover9531 in United States, 16 Sep 2012 11:14

About 85% of LEGO fans don't want TMNT :P If The Lone Ranger comes out, I'll probably get some sets.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 16 Sep 2012 11:31

^^^ You are quite right, they are mere speculation either on my part of rumours from elsewhere. I will label them as such.

Posted by rolvtd in United States, 16 Sep 2012 11:54

Wasn't there something about sets based on "Man of Steel" film or is that not in 2013?

Posted by Balthazar Brannigan in United States, 16 Sep 2012 12:25

I liked all four of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, though the sets were disappointing. Polar Explorer and Space Galaxy could have potential, though Lego's recent space and exploration themes haven't been nearly as enjoyable as older iterations. Hopefully there will be other sub-themes of City released as well, though "Museum Robbery" at least sounds promising.

Posted by Modeltrainman in United States, 16 Sep 2012 12:51

I'm waiting to hear about Pixar. Monsters, Inc./U or otherwise.

Posted by peterlmorris in United States, 16 Sep 2012 14:54

The only thing that's a speculation about the space theme is its name. There will always be a space theme other than SW on the shelves. We've heard that from LEGO numerous times. Space is my favorite, so I know I'll be picking up those sets no matter what.

This Chima stuff sounds interesting. The concept of anthropomorphic animals or animal-human hybrids is pretty cool. I expect some Island of Dr. Moreau MOCs. I wish we knew more about the game parts. I like the spinners, but they're not easy to play with, at least for someone with fairly big hands like me.

Posted by zoery380 in United States, 16 Sep 2012 15:10

I have to say, I 'm annoyed that TLG is giving us even more police and firefighters, but at least 'Museum Robbery' sounds like something besides an emergency vehicle. I guess it makes sense though since children are TLG's main priority, and most children do love police and firefighters. I hope to see another modular building (ie. Green Grocer, Grand Emporium, etc.) in 2013 as well.

Posted by M4444M44 in United States, 16 Sep 2012 15:13

A retiler's catalog will only have set theme/names because of the movie studio doesn't want set pictures released yet, AA it can divulge the film's backstory/plot/scenes/etc significantly in advance.

Lone Ranger is happening.

Posted by Jake43 in United States, 16 Sep 2012 15:49

Does anyone know when Lego is planning on releasing images of the rest of The Hobbit sets? The Bag-End set looks great, hopefully the others will be the same.

Posted by jasake in United States, 16 Sep 2012 20:01

face palm* i assume in the world of lego there are only 2 job option, Policeman or firefighter... what i would really really like to see from a lego city set is a playground/park. come on think about the little lego children, where do they fit into this city of crime and fire?

Posted by Blockland in United States, 16 Sep 2012 21:26

Lets hope the Legend of Zelda passes, because half of these new themes are going to fail. Although, I wish Lego would make a sequel to Mars Mission.

Posted by Starwarsgeek500 in United States, 16 Sep 2012 21:50

Well, there is a "Back to Mars" series of projects on Cuusoo.

Posted by kookars2 in Sweden, 17 Sep 2012 01:16

From what I've heard city will get fire & police every january with a varying subtheme in the summer.

Posted by Modeltrainman in United States, 17 Sep 2012 02:20

Why say half the new themes will fail?

Posted by jcilkmfoster in Hungary, 17 Sep 2012 03:23

Just wondering how accurate the SW Planets list is for '13. We already have Endor with set #9679 (with AT-ST). Do we really know that - two series later - we're going to have the same planet again? Not sure if I'm missing something.

Posted by mysteriouspi in United States, 17 Sep 2012 08:40

jcilkmfoster: Keep in mind, the Endor and AT-ST set that was released contains the moon of Endor. My assumption is that, if the set list is accurate, the B-wing will come with the gas planet Endor that the moon rotates around.

Posted by The_Creator in United States, 17 Sep 2012 08:55

Ninjago, YES, bye bye but then again the replacement could be worse.
I wonder how the Hobbit sets will be released since the movie has been split into 3 parts instead of 2.
TLG isn't smart enough to make there own Western theme? Instead they have to use a licensed Disney theme -_-
TMNT, Oh help me...
Polar Express could be interesting.
Space Galaxy...? Sounds like a combo of Space Police and Galaxy Patrol :D

Posted by Schmidt in United States, 17 Sep 2012 09:46

Well, more TMNT sets for me, or something!

Posted by jcilkmfoster in Hungary, 17 Sep 2012 10:39

mysteriouspi: Aha! Thanks! I wasn't sure if I was missing something. And there it is! Much appreciated.

Posted by DarthZared in United Kingdom, 17 Sep 2012 10:58

@Plasmodium, in the past years, TLG has produced sets in January from the last CW season, such as S3 last time round and S2 the year before. The same is happening this year, and SW.com posted a vid of a commando attacking droids in S5, so maybe next year we'll get one.

But more fun this year to come yet!

Posted by MrVx in Canada, 17 Sep 2012 12:32

The end of Ninjago puzzles me... It's supposed to be widely popular, isn't it? My boys are totally crazy about it, and so are many of their friends. They love the cartoon too. And if I recall correctly, Lego presented a preview (for new episodes) as one of their most popular theme ever, lately. I suppose they meant "original" theme and not licensed, but still.

Could Legends of Chima be some sort of continuity of the Ninjago story, and not a replacement, per se? With the help of the cartoon, they could make the transition easier, I don't know...

I'm not trying to artificially maintain Ninjago alive, but ending it in 2013 (and probably the first half, so Legends of Chima does not coexist with it) seems a bit early if the theme is *that* popular with their primary targets (if the theme was popular mostyl with adults, then I would understand Lego discontinuing it).

Posted by vamproe in United States, 17 Sep 2012 13:43

@Legolover9531 I guess I'm in the 15% that is excited fro TMNT.

Posted by MoonKnight in United States, 17 Sep 2012 14:03

Are the prices that the site shows of the 2013 Star Wars sets true?

Posted by mirandir in Sweden, 17 Sep 2012 17:04

MrVx: We've seen this for a couple of years now and with a few popular themes before NinjaGo. It seems like Lego has decided to let a theme end when it was planned to end instead of when interest has dwindled so much the sets aren't selling anymore. I'm pretty sure Legends of chima will face the same fate in about two years.

And no, Legends of chima is not a continuation of NinjaGo. They have nothing in common besides the setup: A playtheme with a game on the side.

Posted by Town in United States, 17 Sep 2012 23:45

I wonder how these deals with movie studios work- who approaches who, who gets paid what and when...?

Posted by Alexdiazb in France, 18 Sep 2012 05:54

Im quite dissapointed about City Themes. I've enough of Police and Fire sets!! I think we have enough!! Why they don't do something different? What about Airport, Planes, City buildings???...Thats really annoying to see just police fire police fire police fire...

Lets see what will happen.

Posted by Plasmodium in United Kingdom, 18 Sep 2012 06:42

@DarthZared. That really would be very cool. I played the Republic Commandos game, but I thought "Lego will never make sets from this game...it's too violent", but if they come into the Clone Wars, that's going to make it a whole lot more likely!

Posted by cody6268 in United States, 18 Sep 2012 08:50

In my opinion, Lego probably will make Lone Ranger sets due to the fact that both the Lone Ranger's and Tonto's horses (Silver and I can't seem to remember the other one) were pretty important characters in the TV series. Since Lego is probably looking for more uses for the new horse element and seeing that it has only appeared in one theme (Lord of the Rings), this will probably make the theme favorable for Lego to produce. The problem is that the target age group probably has never heard of it, and they have probably only heard of it from their grandparents. I have only seen reruns on a few Western movie channels. I have no idea on what the international success would be considering I don't know what other countries this series has aired in.

Posted by talorien in United States, 18 Sep 2012 13:09

@cody6268 Disney will be releasing a Lone Ranger film (I think animated). This will be what supports (and vice versa) the new theme.

Posted by starwars8288 in United States, 18 Sep 2012 14:57

I am exited about the ninjago stuff and the police stuff. But tmnt, really? The lone ranger sounds promising,so does legends of chima, but a teenaged mutant ninja turtle theme is not that interesting except the shells .

Posted by cody6268 in United States, 18 Sep 2012 15:37

Here's my view of the two licensed themes

The Lone Ranger - Considering LEGO's recent releases of sets based of recent Disney Movies, I would say this might be an actual theme and that the new horse from Lord of the Rings will probably appear in some of the sets

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Possibly, but only on the premise that LEGO has produced sets based of Spongebob , and that TMNT is a Nickelodeon series that will soon be airing, there is some chance of this happening, and that we probably will be seeing some parts previously used in Ninjago

Posted by Modeltrainman in United States, 18 Sep 2012 16:56

I'm hoping based on the recent "two Disney themes at a time, one animated" that Pixar's Monsters, Inc/U is picked alonside LR. There's no competion with Monster Fighters, I'd assume...Anyone know how overlap is handled by LEGO?

Posted by 2002 in United States, 19 Sep 2012 10:42

TMNT is f***ing bull****!

Posted by vamproe in United States, 19 Sep 2012 13:26

why is everyone hating on TMNT?

It could be a cute filler line. Just one season...... maybe around 8 sets or so.
Casey jones
April oneal
splinter
all 4 turtles
shredder
some foot clan
maybe a krang (a larger robot body and use the head hugger from alien defense as a krang but in pink)
a rat king
leatherhead

TNMT has has great character that could make for awesome minifigures.

sets:
a turtle dojo
terrodome
a larger sewer playset
turtle van
a shredder lab with mouser robots
maybe a braxter(sp) figure, the guy we turned into a mutant fly creature latter.

Posted by Town in United States, 19 Sep 2012 15:21

Maybe I'll combine TMNT with Legends of Chima, or Ninjago, and be able to reconstruct the fantastic third TMNT movie.

Seriously though, I agree with the above, TMNT could be cool and also maybe we'll get some stuff to use with our City sets.

Posted by Leggo my LEGO in Canada, 19 Sep 2012 19:49

Musuem robbery sounds pretty cool but depending on how big the museum is probably pretty expensive.

Posted by Konstantin in United States, 20 Sep 2012 16:10

Legends of Chima is ridiculous. If it was legends of CHINA maybe I would buy ancient historical stes. The Polar Explorer theme sounds like Arctic.

Posted by ambrose in Australia, 20 Sep 2012 19:38

if its true that legends of chima is the replacement for ninjago than i am dearly dissapointed beacause it sounds silly

Posted by Anak in Hungary, 21 Sep 2012 12:03

I have a question about the Hobbit sets.
We know now, there will be 3 Hobbit films, and the first one (The Unexpected Journey) probably will end with the escape from the warg attack (based on the second trailer). So, what will happen with two Hobbit sets (Spiders of Mirkwood Forest, Escape in the Barrels), because these two scene presumably will be in the second film (The Desolation of Smaug). Will/Can LEGO release it, or not?

Posted by EdwinJackson in Norway, 21 Sep 2012 14:15

TMNT Lego? Finally. I've been wanting Lego sets of TMNT since i saw TMNT for the first time.
NinjaGo was an good replacement, but nothing beats the original ninja team.

Now Lego, have you heard about Phineas and Ferb? (i know about the game, i want minifig sets)

Posted by Isabella and Lego Liker in United States, 23 Sep 2012 01:24

@Edwin: Looks like the game was indeed fake, as both Brickpedia and the Phineas and Ferb wiki (Which I did get it looking right and have over 10k edits at) deleted theirs a few weeks ago.

Posted by eastlands01 in United Kingdom, 23 Sep 2012 06:09

Instead of always bringing out new police and fire sets every year, why don't Lego start bringing out shops, restaurants/diners/cafe's? As there is nothing wrong with the police and fire sets that we have.

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 23 Sep 2012 12:49

Not only Iron Man 3 (2013), we are also getting Thor: The Dark World (2013), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Avengers 2 (2015), and a Nick Fury movie (unknown release date & cast).
