If you're a VIP member at shop.LEGO.com, you can now order 10229 Winter Village Cottage. VIP members received an email today offering an interesting choice:

"We know our LEGO VIPs will want to be the first to get their hands on the new Winter Village Cottage Exclusive set! However, with double VIP Points just around the corner, you'll get the VIP Star treatment WHENEVER you make your purchase:

    • OPTION 1: Purchase September 24 - September 30: VIP Members get exclusive early access to purchase Winter Village Cottage!
    • OPTION 2: Purchase October 1 - October 31: VIP Members get DOUBLE VIP Points on every purchase of Winter Village Cottage.

"Simply choose which of these options works best for you to purchase this great new LEGO exclusive. Just make sure you're signed in with your LEGO ID to get shopping!"

It sounds a bit of a no-brainer to me. Why would you buy it 6 days early when you can effectively save 5% on October 1st??

Whenever you choose to buy it, please do so via these links: UK (£90) | USA ($100) | Canada ($130). Note that if you're not logged in at shop.LEGO.com, you'll be sent to the home page when you click on them, which confused me this morning when I first read about this at Brick Fanatics.

(Thanks tzi for sending me the email text: I haven't received it directly yet).

Yes I agree there is no reason to buy this before October.
Unless they only made 1000. :) but that would be silly and hardly be worth their time. There must be about 50K of these to make it worth producing.

Unless you live near a Lego store and still have your 10% coupon from the fall catalog. Then you get an actual $10 savings, plus the Single VIP points, plus the coffin car.

Posted by rosney in United States, 24 Sep 2012 18:46

^Not coffin car, zombie car (you mistyped I'm sure, just clarifying for others)

Posted by crosseyedpirate in United States, 24 Sep 2012 19:54

^^correct, I have been looking for something worthy of my 10% coupon - wasn't sure if they would actually have it in store from the email though

Posted by antsbull in New Zealand, 24 Sep 2012 20:27

Hey, is the Winter Post Office still available at all - it seemed to disappear from Shop@Home quickly and over here in New Zealand, I have never seen it on shop shelves.

Posted by TekkamanRaiden in Canada, 24 Sep 2012 20:33

^ The might bring it back closer to Christmas, that's what they did for the other 2 in the series last year.

Posted by Tzi in Canada, 24 Sep 2012 20:50

I'm in no rush... October will be better with double vip..... My only hope is for another free shipping in October...
And who knows, if we could get double point on eveything else, that would ceertainly make my day

Still not sure about the 6 days pre-purchase..... Not a rush for a set that goes under the xmas tree...

Posted by hoyatables in United States, 24 Sep 2012 22:45

I was happy for it. Got to use my 10% coupon.

Posted by jadblz in United States, 24 Sep 2012 23:04

Well I didn't need another car... But I was part of that VIP special promo that got free shipping on $75.00 and over thru the end of Sept. so that sealed the deal for me! To answer another persons comments I saw the post office and bakery available as well yet again this year, although I think it said available on oct 1st.
Hopefully I can take a month off now sept was too expensive!!

Posted by cjg in United States, 24 Sep 2012 23:56

^I'd be happy to take that extra car off your hands...:-)

This set may look okay, but why have Lego decided to have snow inside the house and if I had made/designed it, I would've built a staircase up to the bedroom.

Posted by Legonavt in Russian Federation, 25 Sep 2012 01:25

Yesterday has made the order for this set in Germany for 99,9 Euros

Posted by Joefish in United Kingdom, 25 Sep 2012 06:11

I see the old LEGO Legends mentality creeeping in here. Start out a nice theme, build up its interest, then just creep the price up and up until they strangle it.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 25 Sep 2012 06:16

^ I have to agree with you. It's not as appealing as previous sets and the price is, as you suggest, astronomical. I'll probably give it a miss this year -- I still haven't built last year's post office :-)

Posted by Fayries in France, 25 Sep 2012 06:55

It's in the price per piece range of the other sets, actually (6.040p vs. 5.520p (toy shop), 7.422p (bakery) and 6.082p (post office). Remember that this one is at 1490 pieces where the three other ones were at 815, 687, and 822 pieces.

Posted by Duq in Ireland, 25 Sep 2012 09:00

Indeed it's got as many pieces as the bakery and post office put together though it's hard to see where all those pieces are. Just looked up my old invoices. I paid €41.25 for the bakery, €48 for the post office and €52.50 for the toy shop. It's quite a jump to €95 for the cottage...
Shop at Home for Ireland is no longer listing any of the other Winter village sets by the way.

What a ripoff for Canadians.... 130?

Posted by IAmWillGibson in Canada, 25 Sep 2012 09:18

Sadly, I think I may have to sit this one out this year. It's just too expensive and not really as required as the last few.

Unless I see it when I'm down in the states. I may buy it there. [I'm actually in Canada despite what Brickset thinks].

Posted by Tzi in Canada, 25 Sep 2012 09:28

Yup 130$ canadian vs 100$ US... Which is 30% more.... The Haunted house is 199$ Canadian vs 179$ US... 10% more!

Our currency has been almost pair with the us dollars for a year. So its 30% more just for a few kilometers upnorth! Too bad theyre aint no US legostore near the border of my province! I have to drive to New-York for the closest (6 hours drive)!

And I totally agree with Joefish... I wont be suprise if the price of the 2013 winter theme gets higher, even more in canadian funds! :(

Thats why, I want to at least get double vip and free shipping, to ease the pain in my wallet....

Posted by lovaquero in United States, 25 Sep 2012 10:54

I'd love to give this a pass, but my kids watch LEGO like a hawk for the next set. I'm already getting asked when we're going to get it...

I made the mistake of creating the 'new' family tradition of building the winter village each year for the holidays... Last year we added the 9v motor to the 10173 train and my fate was sealed... And LEGO knows it, somehow =)

Posted by brix in United Kingdom, 25 Sep 2012 11:27

I feel sad every time i see this set - i have all the others and I'd love to add this great set to my collection but I just can't bring myself to spend such a high price for a set which seems to me to be concealing about a third of its pieces. It's such a shame that lego has forced dedicated collectors into paying over the odds or missing out. Especially for a set designed for christmas. where's the christmas spirit?

Posted by Thomson & Thompson in Canada, 25 Sep 2012 11:51

Does this mean there will be double VIP on everything in October? Or just on the Village?

Posted by herbie75 in Kenya, 25 Sep 2012 12:37

I would love this set to add to the family lego xmas display but the price is to high so will wait and see if it goes up for reduce price early next year. As lego did after christmas last year.

Posted by Modok in United States, 25 Sep 2012 13:08

@Fayries - "It's in the price per piece range of the other sets, actually "

That may be so, but the question then is whether a bigger set was really necessary in the first place. One thing I love about the Winter Village sets is that they're small and relatively affordable. Not everything has to be huge and expensive. I just don't know if a cottage is exciting or interesting enough to merit the pricier treatment.

What a ripoff for Canadians.... 130?

Posted by JohnnyB in United Kingdom, 25 Sep 2012 13:14

Sorry it happened again. Old delete if posible.

Posted by Skywalker1966 in United States, 25 Sep 2012 13:19

Eh, I think I'll take advantage of this. For one, I've been psyched about this set since I saw it (yeah, maybe it's not quite as great as the others, but it's still got a certain charm to it), and for two, it will probably be a better deal for me. Using that ten-percent off LEGO Cataloug coupon, I'll get the price knocked down to about $97, tax included, along with still getting almost a hundred VIP points. It's sorta like getting fifteen dollars off instead of the ten dollars off from the Bricktober Special.

@Modok: I can certainly see where you're coming from. However... it's meant to be a house, not a place of business, and could conceivably need to be bigger. Personally, I think it looks great and will be a nice change of pace from the other sets. Still, who knows? If I have the time, I'll see about writing a snapshot review on it.

@Thomson and Thompson: I think it's double VIP points on everything. At least, I think the LEGO Store employee meant that.

Posted by piratemania7 in United States, 25 Sep 2012 13:37

Hey Everyone,

I called LEGO Shop at Home here in the U.S.; She said the October double VIP points is for all sets you purchase, you have to be a VIP member, obviously, but yeah all sets are double points.

I am actually heading to my local store today to pick up the cottage, I am returning the marina for $50, plus with my 10% off coupon thats $40 it will cost me...I will also build the set and would be happy to provide any pictures/reviews/feedback.

Happy Building Everyone!

What 10% coupon are people referring too? Did any Canadians get it in the mail?

Posted by Tzi in Canada, 25 Sep 2012 14:46

Hummm, double point on everything..... It's going to be a really costly october i'm afraid!

Piratemania7: Did you check if there was to be some free shipping as well for October?

Multiplex: Nope havent seen any, its usually a coupon you get with your lego magazine , if youre lucky enough to have a Lego Store near you... If you don't have live in Toronto, Calgary or Vancouver, you dont get a 10% coupon on your mag.

Posted by Duq in Ireland, 25 Sep 2012 18:36

@JohnnyB and Tzi: just get used to it, the US gets the cheapest Lego. $100 would be €77.50 yet we pay €95 or €100, just as much of a ripp-off as Canada...

Posted by legogeek in United States, 26 Sep 2012 10:32

"It's in the price per piece range of the other sets, ..."

"Indeed it's got as many pieces as the bakery and post office put together though it's hard to see where all those pieces are."

Piece counts are deceptive IMO. If something has over 100 rounds or square tiles, vs 100 large pieces, the price point just isn't the same.... Maybe pricing should be compared by weight?

On Topic - the Cottage was available in store at South Coast Plaza, although not on display. VIP members will need to ask for it. I plan on waiting for 2X points.

Posted by Fayries in France, 26 Sep 2012 11:40

@legogeek, you know what? I absolutely agree with you as to the size of pieces involved. Still, the more the pieces (even tiny ones), the more time you will spend building the set, in my experience.

But I'm surely not going to have any fun aligning the flat 1x1 tiles of the floor. I'll probably leave it to the kids as a pre-Christmas activity.

Posted by lovaquero in United States, 26 Sep 2012 12:49

It almost seems like LEGO is starting a cyclic routine each year with "smaller/cheaper" followed by "larger/expensive", with t price points creaping up each time the cycle runs...

Posted by piratemania7 in United States, 27 Sep 2012 08:56

Hey,

The cottage is great! Although, the big deal obviously is the cottage itself followed by the plow truck. I agree, outside of this there are just a lot of small pieces to up the count, ESPECIALLY the floor. I got about half way and then just obsessed about getting them down rather than looking "pretty". I have not taken out my other three village sets yet, I want to wait for a nice cold day I am home to do it.

All in all, I see a theme reocurring here quite a bit. I think we will continue to see this theme evolve and who knows, when I set up all four sets it could be a nice little "downtown square".

I ended up paying about $40 dollars for the set, with coupon, VIP points and a return, so it was worth it for me. I wish I could find a way to keep the light pressed in so it stays on, it looks cool behind the fireplace.

I'll update or post more when I am back home from work.

Later....
