    The 'expanded and fully revised' version of Dorling Kindersley's The LEGO Book is out now and I've just received mine from Amazon.

    The original was published in 2009 and I reviewed it here. This new edition is 50 pages longer than the original and is now 256 pages in total.

    A lot has happened in the LEGO world since 2009 and the book has been updated to reflect this.  The 50 new pages cover topics that didn't exist when the first edition was published (HERO Factory, LEGO Games, Ninjago, Alien Conquest,  Friends etc.) and all other relevant pages have been updated to include content from the last 4 years. 

    It looks as if all content in the first edition is included in this one, although due to significant reorganisation in some places I can't be 100% sure.

    The book is up to date and covers all themes that have been released the second half of this year (LotR, Monster Fighters) but not The Hobbit, unfortunately :-)

    The original edition was packaged and sold with a book about minifigs, Standing Small. That's no longer included but I wouldn't be at all surprised if we saw a much larger book about minifigs published in the near future.

    It's a superb 'coffee-table' book that's a pleasure to dip into when you have a spare moment. If you buy just one LEGO book, make it this one. Even if you have the first edition there is enough new content in it to make it a worthwhile purchase.

The Amazon 'Look Inside!' feature shows the back cover saying "includes the 96-page book 'Standing Small'"...Is this a mistake (ie they put in the back cover of the first book), or will they be available together again in the future?

I have this book for a few weeks now, and it has the good DK quality as the other LEGO DK books.

I have the first edition and the Standing Small book. It is not a bad book (especially at £5 which I paid for both) but it is always going to be out of date. Standing Small makes a point of looking back at 30 years of the minifig, so I see no reason for it to be updated for another 10 years. Yearly updates will always be out of date by the time they are published, so you might as well just look at the new releases online.

@Plasmodium the note above the 'look inside' window states something about this being the first edition but that you'll get the 2nd ed. when you buy it.

For a couple of quid more than the Amazon price, the book people have the Lego book, Standing Small and also the Lego ideas book as a set. Plus it looks like they've got the Batman visual dictionary with the free fig for £6.99 as well. I always check them out for Lego books.

I will certainly get this, not having bought the first edition.

However, I wish that D.K. would do these in 'volumes' so that your purchases wouldn't become obsolete in the future. This is why I haven't bought the Star Wars Visual Dictionary or Character Encyclopedia books - you have to imagine that they will be similarly updated in the future. The only ones I have gotten are the HP books, which we as good as know won't need updating (though I'd be happy to be wrong on that one)!

This is probably more of an Amazon question, but when I click on your link to buy it in the US, it shows that this is a pre-order item for $23.78. Right under that price is shows another buying option of $14.78 and that book is available now. Both of these books state in the description that they have 256 pages. One says it was published Aug 20, 2012 and the other Oct 29, 2012. Are these the same books? I have the same issue with Amazon on The Ninjago Encyclopedia. One is listed for $12 something and on the same page you have one for $18 something. And these books are all shipped from Amazon, not a 3rd party seller. It is really confusing!

2009 was not that long ago, It seems like it's a waste to buy basically the some thing with just a few extra pages. Call me again in 2019, then there would be enough new content to marrit another book
