I am apauled by the pricing. $129 for a bear bones train with no power accessories or track? The last city train was that price and it came with tracks power accessories and a platform. I can see a little increase for inflation. Heck they raised the Modular buildings +$40 (City Hall $190 vs $150 for all others... We still haven't bought it), but if you add in the cost of power accessories and track (no platform or station) you end up ~$240 (depending on how much tracks and if you think a train should have lights). The Maersk train cost $119 without anything so I guess they think this is on par with the Maersk, except that had a truck and extra containers. My wife and I have loved the new trains, but if LEGO keeps raising the price and giving us less I think we may have to boycott them in the future.

@Jayr17 did you expect it under $100?! That would be wishful thinking IMO. This actually has more pieces than the Maersk (100+), so the pricing seems spot on. TLG is not actually raising the price and giving you less. Plus that is US as well; I assume the CDN price will be $139.

Exactly. The Maersk train was 1234 pieces for $120 and the Horizon Express is 1351 pieces... $130 is right on par... Think you need to rethink price per piece... If you don't like the price, don't buy.. I'll be buying several and enjoying them...

Yeah, I am going to have to agree that the price is on par. I thought City Hall was outrageously priced too compared to the other modulars. Then I bought it and put it together. It's much bigger than the others and pretty close to it's price.

I would have liked it at $179.99, but oh well.

Verdict: The set is about 1.1% cheaper per piece.

I'm in agreement with Jayr17. While I have been considering adding a passenger train to my Lego city, I would rather buy the recent passenger train with track and power functions (still available on Amazon.com for approximately the same price as this). I suppose everyone will have a different way of justifying the purchase of a set. Price per part has no bearing on my purchase decisions or general value judgments, so I can't appreciate above comments focusing on that reasoning. I wouldn't have bought the Maersk either had I not had VIP points and a 10% off coupon, making that train only around $90.

To end this on a positive note, I do like the style of this train, especially the general engine shape. The color pattern is the only design drawback for me. It's definitely interesting to see Lego take the Creator theme in this new direction, and I'm looking forward to seeing more!

I want one! Heck, I want two!
When I left France and moved to the US, I had been saving up to buy a Jouef TGV train set, a nice one with 7 cars, lots of tracks and a little electronic traffic control unit. The toy trains in the US were terrible!
I'm finally getting my TGV, and it's Lego! :D

actually the horizon express is a bit more expensive i would say. IN term of size the Maersk train is bigger and comes with a truck. The pieces you get in the maersk train are larger than the piece you get from the horizon and i think people forget that sometimes, sure it technically is cheaper if you think Price per.
just saying sometimes price per piece isn't the best way to go, cuz would you want 200 pieces of 1x1 studs for $20 or 180 2x4 bricks for $20?

im expecting a more spacious inside area on the carriage, and the new features sound mega. If im isufficiently mpressed enough with it, which I suspect I am going to be, then I will purchase a second one just to add a 2nd carriage.

STOP complaining about the price! Some people just want everything for free huh?
In the Norwegian S@H its priced to 999 NOK = 161 USD. The Maersktrain is priced to 1099 NOK = 177 USD.

If you want Lego in the future you have to pay the price.

I was at the Lego store yesterday and I was a bit surprised to find that they were out of the Maersk train. I asked one of the long time employees to check the back. When the employee returned they said that they will not be receiving anymore of the Maersk trains and that the paper she was looking at no long er had a shelf space for the Maersk since August. Just to let everyone know there are also no more Lego grab bags. It appears that corporate is worried that returned sets that have been played with are being mixed into the grab bags and this does not keep to their standards.

@Jerellis1 - lights would be extra tho', and if you wanted lights at both ends, you might end up needing two battery packs and two RC receivers, at which point you may as well use a second motor while you're at it. Unless somebody knows how to link a battery pack at one end of a six-car train to the other - I suppose about four of those wire pieces could do the trick just as well, tho the six car train could prove a little too heavy for just one motor.

I'm really looking forward to this set, especially getting two of them. I recently learned how much of a difference a second motor can make to power functions locomotives, too, which would be very helpful for what's supposed to be a "high-speed" train but has to pull the weight of 2702 pieces (however small). My only reservation about this set is that it doesn't appear two motors could be easily installed on the same engine, which I hope is not the case. Has anyone else noticed anything in that regard?
