You sure about Space Marines? It'll probably make this review.

LEGO will NOT make the Purdue Pete, why aren't people realistic anymore? Out of the 10,000 who voted, how many of those would actually buy it? Isn't it more likely that the people who voted for it did it because it was quick and easy to do and if they didn't it would look bad on them not supporting this mascot. Another reason LEGO won't make this is because it means every university will demand a mascot and the same process will reoccur, loads of uninterested teens voting because someone told them too.

All this has done is display how Americans are sheep.

^ It won't according to Glen Bricker's stats:
http://blog.brick-hero.com/

Space Marines is 53 days away from 10,000. Of course that could change, but support would have to pick up pretty significantly to cut it from 53 days to 38.

I dont think the space marines will make it. It might be too similar to the upcoming 2013 space sets. Also I a bit afraid about the possible collision between the Lone Ranger sets and the modular western town.

I never heard of this Purdue Pete. Is he well known in the USA?

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 26 Oct 2012 12:49

^ That's the problem. He's unheard of outside of Purdue university...

Man, waiting to hear about the Legend of Zelda is taking a lot more patience than I thought I had.

^^ I don't know that the mascot is unheard of outside the university. Purdue is in one of the "big six" conferences of US college athletics. I would imagine that most in the US who have followed college athletics for a decent amount of time have at least seen the mascot. There are definitely more recognizable and well-known US college mascots, though.

That said, I understand LEGO is a worldwide product and agree this is a niche project. But so are many of the other successful CUUSOO projects, in my opinion (Hayabusa, Minecraft, and EVE Online, for example).

Just as another frame of reference - I'm from the US - I follow college sports - and I have never heard of this mascot

With that said - I have a feeling it will not be produced - I can't imagine all those college kids that voted for it are actually going to buy it when they see the price tag - and I don't see many average Joe's picking it up either because of the obscurity - doesn't make a lot of sense to produce (IMO)

I hope they do produce it, and I hope that leads other universities to catch on and post their own brick-built mascots. Sure, it would completely screw up Cuusoo, but may also lead to an ongoing theme. If this is how excited Purdue is for a Lego project, think of the potential sales for enormous schools like Alabama, Texas, Ohio State, Florida, etc.

That's a ton of people buying Lego products who might not have otherwise. That's great for Lego and great for us.

I don't see how LEGO could ever agree to produce this. As "niche" as Shinkai/Hayabusa and Minecraft may be, they still have appeal all over the world (science geeks and gamers, respectively). A obscure mascot for one school that most people outside of the U.S. won't even have heard of makes those other CUUSOO products seem mainstream by comparison. There'd be no market for this at all outside of students, alumni and local fans, and that's really not enough, no matter that they managed to get 10,000 people to vote for it.

@Graysmith

I have a feeling that many people voted for it just because of its association... meaning that very few of those people would actually buy it. I had never heard of Purdue Pete previously either.

Purdue would be better off licensing directly from Lego, or buying bulk bricks and selling sets made up themselves. There may be a lot of Perdue allumni out there but compared to the world population it's minor, and that's who Lego is really selling to

I live in Massachusetts and never heard of the Purdue Pete guy. He will never be made into a set.

this quarterly review process is turning into a joke, just like the rest of Cuusoo. Clearly, LEGO was ill-prepared to handle the niche-fan driven projects that have produced most of the 10,000 vote-getters, and their quarterly process that turns into 6 months just completely kills all the buzz and excitement involved in getting a project over the finish line. This is 2012, 6 months may as well be 6 years in this rapid-response society.

Maybe if they linked it to the OWL Purdue MLA site; it is the only reason I even know a Purdue University exists, maybe they could include a guide on MLA format with the mascot model...

On the other hand I should create a similar project for my university, would be a quick way to get CUUSOO fame!
