I agree with you that Starship Troopers is a very unfairly maligned movie.
I like the look of these sets (except the orange one... stop it with the orange, LEGO!)
Looks like quite a bit of medium blue, very welcome if so.
My kid will love them. I think they will do much much better than Alien Conquest because they will resonate with kids today rather than just adults who recall the old pulp/50s style of AC (which I'm sure drew a blank with the U10 crowd).

Disappointing to not see the galaxy patrol 'armour' re-used. Would have been great to see it in different colours and with the little nod to the classic space logo.

Having the spacemen in different colours in different sets reminds me a lot of the old classic space sets from the 70s/80s, though. Especially because they have those taller helmets, which look like the old ones from a distance.
Edit: Having looked at the pictures more closely, what are the other guys with the humans? Are they robots or are they humans with different armour?

I agree about the armour. It's good to see the helmets in many colours, but no galaxy patrol armour in the same colours really lets this series down. I doubt I'll bother unless 50% off.

Great movie, Starship Troopers. Conceptually, the movie theme is similar to (read the same as) this Lego theme (bugs/soldiers/space), however that's definitely a Lego praying mantis - still a bug, but not at all like the movie. All the fun of the soldier/bug concept with none of the 'not a Lego appropriate theme' as has been seen with concepts on Cuusoo. If they went with Starship Troopers, there would be no way they would be able to decline Cuusoo ideas because they are too violent (Shaun of the Dead anyone?!).

When I first saw these I was happy that there was a new lego theme that I wasn't crazy about and probably wouldn't buy, thus saving money. However, I really like those robot things, and can see myself trying to get all of them...

Yesterday I thought the 70705 is a modular space ship, but obviously you can attach the terrain vehicle on the lower part of the ship. I this the design and overall design of other sets. No reason to argue whether it reflects Starship trooper or not, because to me it remanded STARCRAFT ;-) instead. Anyway, once more I have to mention that I am missing the Classic space logo a lot. The design of the insects is well done. I might give it a shot.

@chicocheco: I was thinking the same thing. The Warp Stinger clearly resembles a Mutalisk from Starcraft. I'd say Lego took their ispiration from both Starcraft and Starship Troopers. I'll give the Warp Stinger a try, if like like it a lot, maybe some more sets.

The "robots" in the set really remind of transformers (kreo got the license and i think at least their minifigures look gross). colorwise they could have done a better job - dunno what to think about the mix of darkred/brightgreen/transparentgreen-yellowish?. the combination of the green throws it off. not keen on buying any of those except for the smallest box (red canopy looks good).

70704 looks promising. In total, I am not a huge fan of the different colours but I get why they were doing this: the collectors might want all the troops and robots in different colours. For me though, it's then lacking a straight look as a faction had in previous themes. (But I guess I am little bit grown out of TLCs target group). However, this is much better than Alien Conquest!

But the different colours are a relief. For a while there it looked like a lazy copy of Mars Mission.
I still think these new helmets are a bit of a failure though. There's a bar under the front, but as soon as you fit a visor it's impossible for a minifig to use it to hold his helmet - and you can't raise the visor.

The custom super-troopers in each set seem a step too far in collectibility to me. The orange one is the only one that looks any good but that helmet should be on a speedway rider, not a space soldier. I notice the influence of HALO on the red one's weapons, if not the whole idea of a super-trooper. Or maybe Mama Mia has just reached Denmark and it's an ABBA resurgence we have to thank...

@Huw: They are not similar. Sorry. Nothing like Starship Troopers at all (unless you simply meant space men fighting bugs). Galaxy Squad, with a name like that, was always going to be space troopers/enforcement agency fighting a non-human menace/criminal of some kind. So no big shock there. As to Starship Troopers as a specific influence/comparison, you could just as easily argue it's the Alien Queen from Aliens franchise. If i was expecting Lego designers to create Starship trooper style bugs, i'd be very disappointed with this effort. Beyond both being large bugs, i see no similarity. If anything, it's an oversized praying mantis, as other have said.

First: the sets look great and i'll be getting the whole lot... GS FTW!

Second: The problem with Starship Troopers, is that they made a patently weak film out of a classic novel, turning it from some mildly anti-communist novel into "well here's the united nazi states, oh we're going to fight bugs" Veerhoven did some lame stuff but as a pure action flick it rocks and even has a shower scene. There was a (japanese?) cartoon series called Roughnecks which was somewhat better. I'm a HUGE Robert A. Heinlein fan an ST is one of my favorite novels, I actually reread it last month. It's on the USMC's reading list and with good reason. As a Heinlein Fan I would say I hate the movie, but as a movie fan, and warm blooded human male american type person... it's pretty sweet. If you really want to get into Heinlein and movies you're probably better off with The Puppet Masters (the Donald Sutherland one).... wait a minute... brains... aliens... flying saucers? sounds familiar... oh and Heinlein wrote that too.... Even Star Trek bit off the guy. I'm going to go stare at CupIsHalfEmpty's pics some more

The more I see of this theme the more I like it. It won't reach the same heights as Alien Conquest did, but it looks like a lot of fun. I do think it's a bit curious that the largest set only comes with four minifigures though, and that no set comes with more than one alien minifigure. Surely they could and should've included another bug in 70705, just to make it a more fair fight.

Why must LEGO be so addictive, especially when it comes to Mini-Figs? Perhaps I should reconsider my stance on buying loose Mini-Figs as it would be better on my wallet. Some of those I really want now simply because of the Mini-Figs and the sheer fun of having my Space Police 3 hanging out with them.

The LEGO Group certainly know how to make very impressive, desireable items, even for we AFOLS.

By the way, why is there this big hate on for Orange bricks? Wouldn't you want more orange for MOCing? It's kind of a rare color if you ask me, and there are certainly some interesting things one could make using Orange as the base color.

I honestly don't think there was any direct influence from Starship Troopers. GIANT SPACE BUGS isn't exactly the most original of ideas, and there is no resemblance in those two pictures; we've got a generic alien insect thing, and a giant robot shaped like a praying mantis.

not Starship Troopers" enough for me. On a side note; In the original Starship Troopers book, they also fought other aliens besides the bugs. The only one I can remember offhand is "the ..skinnies". Where are the big space ships? Starship Troopers had "Capital Ships"....

Armoured human troopers vs invading giant space bugs - looks like a fair influence from Starship Troopers to me Huw ;)

That aside, I do wish there was a more uniform human faction - the mixtures of colours looks a bit odd to me - but it will be nice to get those space helmets in different colours and I do like the various cyborgs/droids/ super troopers.

I will be wanting these.

Why are there 3 sets containing the Blue Team, two of which are the cheapest, but only one each of all the other coloured teams? Pretty annoyed about that, as AC was Blue and I really want some other coloured helmets but can't afford the bigger sets.

Other than that though, I'm very impressed. The models certainly don't seem too simplified, and everything looks really good. I especially like the Green set. I just want to hear prices for all the sets.
Minifigures are of course a highlight. The humans are exactly as I hoped - ADU helmets in different colours, with armour print which is all uniform but still unique to each team. Robots are better than expected, but I hope their heads are helmet pieces rather than moulded heads. Aliens are nice too.

Like others, I'm slightly disappointed that the minifigs in these sets don't sport the "Galaxy Patrol" armor; but not enough to temper my excitement for this theme. Loving the different colors for the human troops and vehicles. I even like the orange, although I'm apparently in the minority on that one. Personally I think it's eye-catching, dynamic and different.

Also really liking the design and color scheme of the bugs' "vehicles" or whatever one would call them. The dark red/lime green color combo looks appropriately alien and buggish.

This theme has a lot of potential places to go; different bug broods with different color combos, endless types of real-world insects to use for inspiration (giant rhino beetle comes to mind), a bug hive, a big human HQ base under attack, heavy-duty space marines, battles on different alien landscapes, etc.

I do agree with you Huw, very starship trooper ish. I love it. Can't wait to purchase these!

Looks like the bugs are a bit outnumbered! As with Alien Conquest I find the bugs more attractive and inventive. If I knew the troopers would be less chunky and well designed than the CMF trooper I might have gotten more of him.

The Classic Space colours and badges could have made more attractive characters and story. Maybe adding the return of Blacktron would have added a third dimension to the bug hunt scenario.

More so than Alien Conquest, here you have to buy a bit of both armies every time as the sets maintain 'instant play' status. Apart from excellent alien MFs, its pretty good.

I still think Galaxy Squad is having an identity crises and is trying to be too many things at once. It makes refrences to StarShipTroopers, Halo, and even some of the set designs from Mars Mission. The majority of them aren't bad overall, but each set seems to be missing "something" for me that motivates me to buy these when they go 20% off. When I see Oneshot themes like this I'm usually willing to bet they'll eventually go for half price, which then leaves the question as to whether or not these sets are actually worth picking up before one years time (after which I suspect they'll be heavily discounted).

I really hope this isn't a "one-shot" theme. There's no reason TLG can't keep this theme going and have Galaxy Squad face off against a rotating roster of different enemies.

And the more I think about it, the more I think the "Galaxy Patrol" CMF could easily fit in with this theme. They've already established different-colored human teams; maybe dark blue is just another team. :-)

Yes Huw the sets contain big bugs, that's the only similarities I see.

Thank god we get Power Rangers in space because that orange and white set is just ugly as sin. The robots are still bad, more so now that their heads aren't actually helmets. But the mech set is sweat and probably only 50$.

What I really see as a huge problem is a $70 set have 4 minifigures. Since when did "Galaxy Squad" = Star Wars? More minifigures LEGO! There should be roughly one mini figure for ever $10 a set is.

And for some reason autospell sometimes makes mini figures two words every other time I type it.

Awesomeness in a link. Loving the colour variety. As most seem to have regular space helmets I think the ones with the unusual helmets are the commanders or something. Insects are a worthy opponent with lots of delicious lime green and trans-red. Will definitely pick up the green team (Nobody can resist a mech) for sure but intend to get a lot more if I have the money!

Glad it isn't just orange-white for the heroes, the Mars Mission flashbacks were not the best. Speaking of flashbacks it seems we have found out what the Nexus Force has been up to since LEGO Universe closed! Maybe its just me but I am looking forward to modifying the minifigs into members of the Venture League (Green) Sentinels (Blue), Assembly (Orange) and the Paradox (Red). Long Live LEGO Universe!

LEGO, I will have to submit and concede defeat soon. I can't effin keep up. I'm not poor by any means, but we're talking a few grand a year to keep up with all those $100+ sets (modulars, arkham, haunted house, large theme sets, etc).

One other slight disappointment: why are there so few aliens? How are you supposed to make a swarm with only one alien per set? I wouldn't have minded at all if even there were two identical aliens in one set, just as long as the quantity was higher.

I know I should just refrain but these sets look terrible to me. My kids even think these sets are "kind of dumb". This and the Legends of Chima are the worst themes Lego has come up with in quite a long time. Maybe because I am an AFOL I am a bit out of touch with what the majority of kids like these days. The only positive I can say is that at least they tried to come up with something new that was a non-licensed theme.

70701 is the only set that appeals to me. In general, the whole theme seems a bit over the top. But of course I'm not the target market. I'm sure conflict sells more sets than no conflict, but it would have been nice to see a more exploration-based theme.

These are more 'classic space' than they first appear - different colour spacemen, spaceships that are through and through spaceships (- not like 'police cars in space' or '50's B-movie with a knowing wink') - just pure, rocket ship-y, Thunderbirds 2086, combining, techno awesomeness. These are the best space sets in YEARS.

And aside from 'Bugs vs Spacemen', the story isn't tied down too much either.

Good work Lego, keeping Space going aside from Star Wars. And bring back the Blacktrons.

Whether or not the theme is influenced by starship trooper is not important.. Even if it is, the insects manage to give this space theme a good twist and certainly kids will love to play with good and bad guys in some battle scenes, so that's what the insects are there for. I love this space theme and find that the designs are intricate, detail, and with good colour combination! The thoughts of making some of them transformable is definitely a plus. :)

It looks like the Galaxy squad has some alien members in it. I think this is great!

Unlike 2009's space police series that had good guy humans and bad guy alien this series appears to have some diversity. When there are no good aliens it has a tendency to lead to unfortunate implications.

Too much technic stuff in the models for my needs.

Although a great bargain might be there if this series fails to inspire the target audience of 8-10 year olds.

As far as the comparison with Starship I see more Galaga or Galaxian (and real insects). The bugs in S.T. are much more stylized.

I said this about space police three. But I would like to see sets that only had one vehicle in it for one side like the older space themes.
I understand that this gives the children a conflict right of the box, but you could have bigger vehicles for both the bugs and galaxy squad if there wasn't both in a set. But still awesome to see new space.
