Advent day 1

Advent day 1Having just got back from our Christmas party at LLW (which was great BTW), I've just read through my RSS subscriptions and was shocked to see that every Tom, Dick and Harriet are doing Advent countdowns on their blogs this year!

It will be interesting to read their take on the models but with my photographs and your comments, together we'll make sure Brickset's is the best on the 'net :-)

For day one of the City calendar, we have a fireman. I'm not a big fan of emergency services sets but this year the fire minifigs are so much more realistic than in previous years with their high-vis outfits, printed legs, and dark red helmets.

The bag contains a spare helmet and 'megaphone'.

Advent day 1The Friends calendar door number one contains one of the two mini-dolls in the set.

This one is, I believe, Olivia, who's sporting a lovely festive jumper. There's not much more to say about her, but hopefully in the coming days we'll get some neat models for her to interact with.

Advent day 1Finally, in the Star Wars calendar we have a mini Gungan sub. It's immediately recognisable and a pretty good representation considering it contains just 13 pieces.

Overall then, all three calendars are off to a good start. My scores out of 10 for each are:

City -- 8, nice fig, spare hat.
    Friends -- 8, unique festive mini-doll.
Star Wars -- 7, good effort, maybe a bit on the small side.

The fireman (or woman) looks kinda like a female minifig. Having it inperson, would you say the same Huw?

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2012 16:29

No, it's a guy. They tend to put lips on female figs.

@Huw- Can I use your Flickr pictures for my review of the Star Wars Advent Calendar? They're such good quality, and I really am too lazy to take my own.

Sure, just let us know here where you use them and post a link back to Brickset.

I think with the Sub, it's stupidly small and you can't do much with it. Similar to the things last year in the Star Wars one, that's why I got the City one instead. It will be fun getting Lego everyday. It's definitely a man, not a woman.

Someone posted about the gungam sub model. he said the playmobil calender was better, and he actually like that stuff.

I'd do a reverse countdown if I had one and a blog :/

Ha ha, anyways, I will wait for Wal-mart to clearance these again like last year and pick a couple up. Still have a sealed SW one from last year.

And it's more like a "micro" Gungan sub; can we say that it has Gungan Style? (ohp, ohp, ohp...)

Was Brickset.com (last year) the first out with the idea of advent countdown?

Posted by bricksan in United Kingdom, 01 Dec 2012 17:37

I did a City countdown on my old Bricks and books blog last year and continued it this year but last year my blog wasn't well know so really everyone has seen how popular the Brickset one was last year and decided to follow suit.

Although nothing beats Brickset photos including mine ;-)

^^ Probably not

^ It's cool, I don't have or expect a monopoly :-) I quite like the way you're doing them this year, getting other people's opinion, it's a good idea.

@Huw- My review will be used here on Brickset, so should I still cite them?

@TH3_L3GO_G3N1U5 (boy, that's a mouthful to type)- Gungan Style! Fantastic!

^ In that case, no problem at all, I thought you wanted to use it on another site somewhere

I really like the fireman as I didn't buy any forest sets this year as its a nice addition. The Gungan sub certainly has style and is a decent mini model of the main model.

I rather like the Gungan Sub model today and the fireman is a nice set-up for what will, I hope, be a good City Advent Calendar this year. I just wish we could get back to the good old days of the 2010 City Advent Calendar where it really was Christmas related!

@Huw- Thanks for that. I usually come here for my primary Lego site, so all of my reviews are on th is site for all of my sets.

I like the SW micro models - sure they might not be 'useful', but I don't think they have to be, it is an advent calendar, so I think it is alright for the contents to be simple novelty toys.

I was very pleased with the sub when I opened it on the 1st, yesterday. It was a good start to the calendar in my opinion, and is extremely cute (expecially next to the bigger one). I look forward to reading more opinions on the calendars during this countdown! :D

Sorrty but the SW one looks rubbish. The City one is ggod though.

I like the Gungan sub.
I think these micro builds are very clever in representing vehicles with so few parts.
Great pictures as always @Huw :-)

I'm a fan of the city minifig and the friends minifig, but I think that the Gungan Sub needed a bit more than 13 pieces to be fully represented, and with it's odd curves, was a very strange vehicle to choose for representation as a mini model.

I did not recognize the sub.

Posted by ChicoCheco in Norway, 02 Dec 2012 08:59

Sub look quite OK, I got the SW calendar last year, but this year I rather wanted the City. The beginning is quite OK! Lets see the accessories tomorrow ;-)

Posted by Brickmatic in United States, 02 Dec 2012 23:50

Didn't recognize the sub either. I saw it and thought "What is that?" Then I read the post and found the "immediately recognizable" part funny.
