I always keep one set myself and some minifigures more, and the box, and the rest I sell.
But this time some of the figures I want more there are only two in one box.
This is really discouraging.

At the dutch lego club I often talk about these series and that they are given out too fast after each other.
A child can't even collect a full series because then the next is there already.
I think Lego hit the marked with them and everyone liked them so much, and bought them so fast, that they forgot it was for children and not adults with a hugh income.

on the contrary, this combination of figs encourages many fans to buy the entire boxes. i know for a fact that there are a lot of people out there (and certainly in my own country) who want to set up an army of cyclops, knights, policemen and aliens. :) i think 3 waiters in one box is too excessive, so 2 is just nice i suppose. i think the number of each fig is just nice for box collectors.

As usual, there are 5 female minifigs - hollywood starlet, forest maiden, fortune teller, roller derby girl, and mermaid. Unusually, with the exception of the mermaid, all of the other female minifigs are only 2 (!) per pack. What's up with that?

Some nice surprises and great new parts, but not so keen on the promotion of tarot reading... interesting that they have a stance on 'religious' figures, but are happy to dabble in the dark arts. Nice that some army builders are 6, but 2 of some figs per box is ridiculous.

I'd agree that they seem to be coming out too quickly after each series, shops near me still have series 7, and 8 (and GB!)

I stopped collecting sets after the fifth series of minifigures, after I found I wasn't actually doing anything with the figures themselves. I am not into army building and the figures take up way too much space to display. Still, series 9 looks pretty good and contains some tempting figures, I admit.

@Andhe: I personally do not see any issues with the Tarot card reading. It is not a religion, nor are Tarot cards considered 'religious symbols' themselves. I especially do not associate Tarot with 'dark arts' of any kind (I look to the Voldemort minifig for that kind of action :) ). I'd have more issues with a minifig with a Ouija-board, personally.

Loving the tarot cards, starlet and waiter. Pretty much a James Bond moc right there.

I used to read tarot cards for friends a little at University. An amazingly effective way to get to know girls (although no doubt entirely amoral).

Really disappointed that there is such a skew to the distribution!

Unlike it seems many AFOL’s I don’t buy whole boxes but instead spend a lot of time picking out the ones I want… Many of the ones I want doubles of are in the 2 category!! It’s going to take an age and a hope that I get there before others do or there are lots of boxes to go through!! If these are for children to collect whole series of then over loading the boxes with figures to build ‘armies’ with really is not good…

but a least there are a few chicken suit guys he is AWESOME!

This distribution might full even higher resale values on line.. but I have found since the first series the stores near me to have lots of boxes so here is hoping and a lot more places stock them!!

So these will be out on Jan 1st?

Doesn't bother me at all. This series is fantastic! The Alien Avenger one of the best yet.
I much prefer this box distribution as like doing the army building thing with certain minifigures in the set so it will make it easier as Alien Avenger, Knight, Cyclops, policeman are the highest in number followed by the battle Mech.

Better than buying whole boxes is to buy the minifigures you actually want. But it needs you to live in a country with relatively few demand (e.g. me) and have very good standing with plenty of different retailers' clerks. HAHAHAHAHA, I have three alien queens and 8 robots from series 8 and that's exactly what I wanted. Well, I am going to go hunting more alien queens.

But if you want to play by the rules and get bags that are completely leit-random. Then there being two sets in each box will [i]seriously[/i] impair you. In fact, this makes buying a whole box even better in comparison than in previous series. Through this: http://vexorian.blogspot.com/2011/12/minifig-problem.html , I can tell you some results:

1) Expected number of random bags you need to buy before you complete a set: 76.5337387845 . This is BY FAR, the worst number in all CMF series.

2) Expected number of bags before you get 5 alien troopers and 5 mechs: 80.8769408

3) Probability to find at least one complete set after buying 60 random bags: 37.32%

Great looking figs again, lots of nice new parts - love the skates, judge's wig, plunger and the mech armour.

As a packet-groper not a box-buyer i'm a bit disappointed to see the skewed distribution. I thought at some point previously Lego had said there would not be 'rares' introduced into the series? Maybe I was mistaken, but i recall this being said somewhere and by limiting 6 of the figs to 2/box they are certainly making those harder to get, and thus sought-after and more valuable on the resale market. I am pleased that the more obvious army-builders are in a higher proportion because yes, I will want more aliens, mechs, cops, cyclops, etc. but unless I get to an unopened box and have an hour free for feeling packs i suspect i'll be picking them up in 2's and 3's to get the ones I want.

Can we expect ultra-rare 1/box figs eventually?

I have to say I quite like the look of most of these figs which is a pleasant surprise.
The Forest Maiden looks good and I love her shield. Slightly resembles that of a Minas Tirith soldier.
Not that fussed about the White Robot thing and the Robot Alien thing but this series has defoe interested me more than any of the past few.
I can see how not getting 3 whole sets would annoy some people but I only get one set and possibly a couple of extras if I can be bothered.

I thought that after the release of Series 8 and 7 (not as much) that perhaps that things were starting to die off for the CMFs. Series 9 definitely should help revitalize the CMF (if any needs was there). I still find that if Lego wants interest in this to last, then they should either release them less frequently or should have decreased the number of minifigures in each series. Our society tends to have this need to super saturate the market which doesn't peak interest all that long (usually); but at least they've lasted more than a year like some of the recent Lego themes.

I only like have one complete set and a few extras of the ones I really like, but I can see how this might upset those who buy boxes when it comes to the distribution. When you look at the secondary market, there will obviously be lots of the Cyclops, Knights, Policemen, Alien avengers so they might sell for less than the original price but those will most likely be offset by the Waiters, Hollywood starlets, roller derby girls, fortune tellers, forest maidens, plumbers.

Oddly for me the Cyclops and Knights are a must have which are the most common.

Can't help but feel that this change is because the kids only want the "cool" robots/monsters/etc. and not the others (i.e. female characters, by the look of things). If that's the case, then maybe it's time to lower the number of minifigure types and only have 8 different robots/monsters/etc. in each box or something.

I wonder if this'll end up backfiring on LEGO. Lots of kids/parents who don't feel the packets are certainly far more likely now to get duplicates, which in turn may lead to them being less likely to buy CMFs in the future.

There are places that still have GB Mini-Figs? Man I'd love to get some of that series.

Considering I've only picked up maybe ten in all from S7 and wound up three times with that annoying Jungle Boy from three different retailers no doubt, I'd have to say fixing the ratio of certain Mini-Figs in a case isn't such a bad idea. (Kept two JB and sent the third to a friend. Spread the LEGO Love, am I right?)

Still it would be nice not to have to hunt excessively for all those neat new Female Mini-Figs, the Female Mini-Fig is already a rarity let's not give them an excuse to make it even rarer.

I have never once collected an entire set, the closest I've come is Series 3 through the feel method and attempting to decipher the dot codes on the back. I wouldn't mind the case ratio changes if they either went back to the bar code method of identifying makeing it less of a hassel to get a whole set, or found some other way to keep track of who is in which packet. Sure there are unscrupulous people out there who might take advantage of such a thing, however the Hasbro Kre-O brand Blind Packed figures aren't so blind packed and they make it simple and easy for everyone to get a complete set of each wave/case. Once you know the codes you can buy to your hearts content and double up on the ones you really like for extra parts without any hassle.

Blind packed figures may be an easy cash cow, but it is certainly a frustrating one.

Can't help but wish the Forest Maiden used the brighter green to better associate with the Robin Hood fig. Well, mostly I wish the shield was the brighter green-- I'm worried it will look out of place when my Forestmen arm themselves with it.

Doesn't Lego know that Robin promises all of his men "Two Suits of Lincoln Green" every year when the join his merry band??

I am really, really, really frustrated by this release. Out of five females, 4 of them are set at 2 per box!! This was one of the few ways I had at getting any female minifigs, especially unique hair pieces and faces, and now it is just that much harder. Female minfigs are already difficult enough to find in sets, let alone now mucking up the numbers here. I have 2 girls and a boy, and almost on every release there are several female minifigs they all want, and at a minimum, I have two girls that want one of each.

@alldarker: Andhe is right, I would certainly associate tarot cards with the occult, which is arguably a form of religion, even if it's less organized and not mainstream. There are people who take it personally and seriously. My personal biggest beef with LEGO's stance on religious iconography is that as the center of many people's lives, some of the world's finest architecture is represented in religious edifices. It's a shame that these can't be brought to the Architecture or Creator Expert lines. (Also, even though I'm not Catholic, how awesome would an Anglican priest or Pope (non-specific) CMF be? Dat hat.)

I'll echo other sentiments above: LEGO is releasing too many of these too fast. I've got full sets of Series 4-8, and some of my older ones are getting lost in the crowd. Almost every CMF is consistently excellent, but they lose their uniqueness when they're just one of hundreds.

In just looking through the series on Lego.com they really look great! The new pieces (plunger, cop hat, etc.) will make a great addition to the piece bin and the characterization of the figs are marvelous! I have enjoyed to sonnections between the series', seeing how one will match and compliment another.

I am one of the completest collecters (since series 3) that will likely get at least one of each of these. I don't buy a box or use the dots, I enjoy the hunt while I stand awkwardly in the aisle feeling the bags. Have I received strange glances my way? You betcha! But, I've also been able to help out the frustrated mom trying to get a particular one for their kid a couple of times.

There's no doubt that LEGO hit the bullseye with this series, especially when you consider the number of other brands it has inspired (Mega Blocks, Playmobile, Hello Kitty to name a few). As much as I'd like to say I will eventually stop snatching up these little bags, as long as they come out with something appealing, I'll likely keep going.

It is a great series! Really better than S8 to me. But the quantities are in fact unusual (more like series 3 that had 2 units of some figs), maybe because (as it happens to me when I sell) women are always less wanted by kids, not by AFOLs like me, but children do not like or want any women to play with, at least not until certain age :)

This set isn't as great as I thought it would be. Still a very nice set of minifigures.

And in the past Lego has changed up the configuration of the boxes during production. We seem to start off with only two complete sets and then get three later.

This is my favourite series yet. I'm a female minifigure collector, so this is great for me with three new hair moulds, a recoloured one, three faces I like, three dress/torsos, a mermaid tail and two other great torsos. Plus there's really no figure I don't like - I won't get them all, but really I'd be more than happy to if I had the money. I'm pleasantly surprised by the Mech, and even moreso by the Cyclops - that double head is amazing! My favourite is the Fortune Teller because her printing and Tarot cards are just spectacular. Next is the Mermaid, although I don't like her face I love the rest. Starlet is nice too, wasn't expecting the dress to be Aqua or in that style, but I like it. Plus if LEGO decide to make another SH set containing Black Widow, they can use that hair in Dark Orange.

The problem: Distribution! Seriously, that is just wrong. Two of every female except one? I don't buy boxes, but I'm worried that if I don't get there when the box is newly opened, there may be none of the 2x figs left. Also, I'm slightly disappointed by the minimal dual sided heads and torsos: Series 7 had 4 double heads, Series 4 had quite a few backprints too, this series only has one double head and two backprinted torsos.

Designers: superb work! Box packers (:P): I'm disappointed.

Lego screwed up once before (they released boxes with only two crazy scientists in them), and fixed that issue before too long.

Oh the joys of collectible minifigures (they'll continue indefinitely by the way as they are the #1 selling toy-line). I've scoped out bar codes, compared dots, groped packages, bought whole boxes to return them, and then I've got the staff at the Lego store to find them with me. Surprisingly they keep some of them in their uniform so they can hand them to people if they ask for them. Went back to groping for the last line and stood in Target like an idiot for an hour feeling them up.

Will definitely be making the trek out to the Lego store again for this line and having the staff help me. Bottom line for me is that I bought five minifigs from Series 8, and will only be getting four here (plumber, knight, waiter, and Mr. Splitz).

Since I have several spare sets of previous series lying about, I'd much rather have this distribution, becuase there will be less redundancy when buying a whole box - lets face it, reselling is a complete hassle. The downside is that some of the '2 only' figs will be rarer than before, which is not a good thing as ebay prices for these may well go up.

I could care less of the distribution. Three sets are too many. I've only ever bought one set anyway because reselling becomes to much of a hassle. I also like how quickly TLG releases them so I can build new sets around each so that way I don't get bored.
This will probably be the first series that I make army builders with cyclops and knights due to the sheer classic ness of them.
It would've been cool if they had made a toilet paper strand going from the torso of the Plumber.

The distribution makes things harder for everyone. Specially if you just want to get one complete set. If you used to just feel the contents of the bags, the quantity of figs that only come in pairs in each box will make you need a lot more time to find all the minifigures. If you buy completely random, you will need more purchases. (If I remember correctly, the expect amount of bags to purchase before completing a set in the previous series was about 58, with the change it is 76. If you buy boxes, you will only have two complete sets instead of three.

Overall the box buyers are the ones that will have less issues with this.

As far the the number split up, Im happy except the Mr Good and Evil and Forestwoman should traed places in number included in each box.
Need: : x1 Waiter, x1 Hollywood starlet, x1 Roller derby girl, x1 Fortune teller, xAs many as I can get :P Forest maidens, x1-3 Roman emperors, Maby 1x Judge, x3-10 Battle mechs, x1 Mr Good/evil, x1-3 Cyclops, xHow many can I afford? :P Heroic Knights, x1 or so Policemen, x5-10 Alien avengers.
So this Series is gonna cost me $60-$135, boy that adds up way to fast, I need another BOGO 50% off promo at TRU for this Series :P

Huw, thank you for covering my review in Brickset and sharing with the community here. It is much appreciated.

For the new distribution, I will only think it is a bold approach to break away from the tradition. We had first seen it in Series 3 and after that, it revert back to the old tradition. Whereas, Series 3 distribution rarely make any sense in terms of pleasing the different type of minifigures in a box, it had actually made it kind of bad and harder.

Personally, at least I can speak for Singapore situation, I can foresee most AFOLs will probably buy them in mint boxes and trade their spares with army builders to get the wants they want. Army builders will also buy in mint boxes and trade their unwanted minifigures of '2' or '4' away. I think this might just happen.

Overall, I think and foresee the Forest Maiden will be the next equiavelent Series 2 Sparten, Series 3 Elf and Series 6 Roman Solder value. This is just my 1 cent worth of thought.

Well, on one hand, this distribution is awful. On the other hand, it should entirely lay to rest any AFOL speculation that the weighted distribution of collectible minifigures is designed to make things difficult for army builders or create "chase" figures. There is one "army builder" fig who's only two per pack, the Forest Maiden, but the rest of the major "army builder" figs are six per pack.

If anything, the distribution seems to be weighted to make the figs with the least appeal for LEGO's core audience (preteen boys) less plentiful, and the figs with wider appeal among kids and AFOLs alike more plentiful. I can't say I like that trend one bit, but it at least shows that TLG isn't trying to create artificial rarity for the figs people want the most.

I'm certainly not going to stop buying the collectible minifigures for this reason, but then again I'm not a "completionist" and am quite adept at feeling for the figs I want. It might be a bit time-consuming for me to find the waiter, who is a must-have for me, a mermaid, or a Roman Emperor, but i imagine they and the other figs I want most will be no trouble to find if the supply of this series is as good as the past several series have been.

It might also be that the distribution is not the same in every box. Maybe they are putting in random amounts of each minifig in. Until more boxes show up, we don't know.

Along the tarot going into religion line, we also have further extension into alcohol. The waiter has a nice bottle of wine.

That knight is probably my favorite, he'll go great with the evil knight from series 7. I also love the tuxedo on the waiter. That battle mech looks a little too similar to the minifigures from Galaxy Patrol so I don't have much interest there.

Am I to understand that the plunger actually works? If that's the case it could be the most awesome figure in the series.

As far as distribution goes, I hope it winds up being different from the early release boxes like we've seen in the past. However, the big problem for me can be solved with a little patience. I always buy at least two sets and a few extras that I may have a purpose for. When these first come out, I just know someone will manage to go through the boxes before me and I will not be able to find a forest maiden or something else but eventually there will be plenty available and I'll be able to get what I want. I just hate waiting...

The minifigures that stand out in particular to me are:
Alien Avenger; looks like an awesome enermy... not to fight, though. =P
Battle Mech; goes well with Galaxy Squad.
Heroic Knight; great pieces and printing.
Judge; same as Knight.
"Mr. Good and Evil"; the printing and colors work well together; that face is interesting, and has potential to be used elsewhere.
Cyclops; Heroes of Might and Magic MOC; enough said. One of the best, although I'm a bit biased.

I got Series 6 and 7 boxes on Bricklink for about US$150 each including shipping. Most recently, I got Series 8 through Amazon France. That was 91.45 euro including shipping to USA. I think the price for Canada was the same.

I think the box distribution will work better for retailers. The ones that are two-per box are really only ones some collectors will want, not KIDS. I think in the 6-8 weeks of the hunt, I buy about one box total... That's about the mix I would like overall. Sure ebay'rs/speculators will be trying to jack up prices on the ones less packed, and run out to local stores to grab them quickly, but I don't think that will really matter. Lego seems to be smart in flooding the market with these. I think the idea all along was to keep enough in channel to have 2-3 sets on shelves as impulse buys.

I kind of wish they would have a "full set" purchase with one on each online. But Lego seems to be reusing these parts in other promotional sets and such. They just about have remade the full fantasy collection character-for-character, and probably community workers too. Maybe we will see those re-bundled again?

I can state my kids, 2 girls and a boy, would highly disagree that kids would not want those. My son usually has 4-6 top favorites, and about 1/2 the ones he requests are female minifigs. The female skier and cowgirl were in his top 5 last time. My girls highly request all female minifigs.

I can only hope they modify the distributions a bit.
