Advent day 19

  • Advent day 19

Advent day 19Today, the City advent calendar gives us another firefighter, but this guy looks like he's had a pretty busy day and is unwinding with a nice hot cup of tea. The two extra fire helmets are a nice touch.

Advent day 19In the Friends calendar, we get a single element, a handbag. It's a relatively rare part and it has only previously been available in the large Friends Summer Riding Camp.  A nice accessory for one of the minidolls, but a single item does seems a bit poor.

Advent day 19Today's mini ship model from the Star Wars calendar, is a Neimoidian Escort Shuttle as used by Nute Gunray in the Prequel trilogy. It's a nice little model, with an interesting build technique and some nice parts (15 in the model with 3 spares).

Overall a pretty good day; the firefighter and Shuttle mini model are excellent, but the handbag lets the side down a bit.

City -- 9, a nice figure with some useful accessories.
Friends -- 3, regardless of what you think of the handbag itself (I think it's pretty neat), a single element is a bit of a let-down.
Star Wars -- 9, a great little model, my favourite of the mini models so far.

A 9 for the third fireman with only a coffee mug? You're very generous...
Seriously though, I'm a bit disappointed with 3 minifigs with identical legs and torso's.

The star wars 9 is a bit generous too, I thought it was ok, but the lever is awkward looking.

Nice parts in the SW one. But, the model is of a goofy ship, that I would not have been able to identify had I not seen the previous minifigure scale set, and maybe not even then. I sure wouldn't mind a few more of them for the nice parts though (yay for tan slopes and dark tan plates...)

My 4 year old daughter said "wow, a handbag..." Reminded me of the same tone of voice my mom used when I bought her an iron for Christmas...

Anybody else get three hats and three mugs?

Posted by StarWarzFan7777 in Netherlands, 19 Dec 2012 14:55

The wing part of the ship should be the other way around

Posted by Legozrool in United States, 19 Dec 2012 14:57

Hmmm..... I'm thinking about getting the city calendar it's been pretty good this year

Posted by Gandalf the brick in United Kingdom, 19 Dec 2012 15:01

Really liking today's starwars mini model. It captures the ship well although it's not very well known. I added the spare cheese slope to the top of the large wing to give it more height, a good add on. I don't own the friends one but the handbag seems dissapointing possibly worse than cities wheels as they had a use...

Mine had 3 mugs as well - must be thirsty firefighters in my calendar!

Posted by Plasmodium in United Kingdom, 19 Dec 2012 15:04

Yes, @Bluemoose, the tall tan slope (the fin on the shuttle) should be the other way round, I believe. (sloping towards the rear).

It was a very hard sell today to convince my daughter of how cool her Friends purse was when she saw the bigger models coming out of the City and Star Wars calendars.

While my kids have had fun with their calendars, some of the models have been less than impressive, and 1 piece has to be the least impressive advent calendar build ever.

We are really enjoying the calendars, I agree with the 3 for the handbag, however Mrs Messy was over the moon with joy.

Difference between Huw's ratings and bluemoose's ratings:
Huw rates the Friends calender too high, and the others too low.
Bluemoose rates the Friends calender too low, and the others too high.

=P

But really, it's interesting to see a difference of opinion.

kbsig106 - Your daughter sounds adorable! And she's totally right. I had the same face when I saw the "build" today, too.

It's the second one element day for Friends, the other one being the dog (which got a 7). Personally, I've been really enjoying the Friends calendar this year; much more than either the City or Star Wars calendars last year.

Also, I rather like the handbag.

Posted by Modok in United States, 19 Dec 2012 17:03

Actually, that handbag looks more like a bowling ball bag, which would make it exponentially cooler. Coming tomorrow: a Friends Dude!

Surprised at how much people like the Star Wars model, I'm not a fan. But that's more the fault of the ship itself, a goofy-looking thing. Admittedly a decent build for it, though. Bricklink called it an AAT the other day...it's been corrected now.

Three mugs with our fireman and only one helmet. Would've preferred the extra helmets.

Posted by zipsforbananas in United Kingdom, 19 Dec 2012 18:33

The Star Wars calendar has been better the last few days, but I'm a bit worried that in the overall stats it's in the lead when it's been mainly pants with a few bright spots.
And I think Huw built and snapped the models in a rush before he went away so don't be too harsh about the backwards fin everyone! ;)

You put the tan slope on the top on the wrong way!

Posted by Graysmith in Sweden, 19 Dec 2012 20:44

Got three helmets and three mugs with my City calendars, very nice of LEGO to put in extras! And I love the head on the firefighter, it's one of my favourites.

The Star Wars calendar is hilariously bad this year. I guess they did all the noteworthy models last year and it's all scrap this year. I bought it at a hefty discount and even at that price (~$10) I'm kinda regretting it! But I suppose some of the minifigures are nice, at least.. And I'll treasure the snowman astromech. I do hope they do it differently next year, they're all out of worthwhile spaceships to miniaturize.

We scored!! 3 helmets and 3 mugs too with the City calendar!! The handbag is a nice piece...but it's not like a police dog or anything like that - a little underwhelming!!

Posted by CapnRex101 in United Kingdom, 20 Dec 2012 04:25

I very much like the Star Wars offering today, as good as the Vulture Droid I think, but the Naboo Starfighter is still out in the lead in my opinion.

Posted by Lunchie in United Kingdom, 20 Dec 2012 06:23

While I like the mini-ship, I don't get why the cheese is tan. That bit's a cockpit, so should have been a clear/smoked cheese IMHO.

Posted by The Cobra in Italy, 20 Dec 2012 06:28

3 mugs here in Italy too!

Posted by goldfish in United Kingdom, 20 Dec 2012 06:30

and the reason a 9 is too high, is that there is nowhere to go with the scoring! I fully anticipate a couple of far better offerings in the next few days as we get to the business end of things.

Posted by legoDad42 in United States, 20 Dec 2012 13:22

@Graysmith...there are still a few worthwhile ships to make for next years calendar...they could do micro's of a Death Star, Super-Star Destroyer, Bespin Cloud Cars, Darth Vader's Tie Fighter, Luke's Landspeeder, Blockade Runner, those Trade Federation tanks, Pod Racers, AT-ST's, B-Wing's, any of the Jedi's starfighters, Geonasians ships...and many more. There's still quite a few to do...but I agree, I'd like to see something different.
It would be great if the entire calendar was each day a room from the Death Star (some with Xmas themes) and if you connect them all together and shaped right a micro to midi sized Death Star. Or like a cutaway half of a Death Star.

The vertical wing is backwards.

It's been my idea that the two extra helmets in the City Calendar are gifts for the kids featured earlier. For them to play fireman, y'know.
