Slightly new look...

  • Slightly new look...

Posted by Huw, 10 Jan 2010 13:56. Filed under Brickset.

I've tweaked the CSS slightly to make the site look a bit better on widescreen monitors and also to fix a couple of issues with Firefox and Google Chrome browsers.

Consider ths an experiment: let me know what you think, if you don't like it I can change it back.

Update 12th Jan: You didn't like it. I changed it back :-)

@Huw - Thank you! I have recently started using Firefox. There is a lot of empty space in the middle though, but it does fit the screen well. Great job.

Posted by Republic Commando Sev in United States, 10 Jan 2010 14:20

Can't say I really like it, but I don't hate it either. The only thing that bothers me about it, is now theres big white spaces on each side of the screen, and it makes it look odd.
I can live with it though.

yeah, I thought something was up then saw this notice that wasn't there the 2 minutes before...
anyway

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 10 Jan 2010 14:36

@Zacherano and anyone else that sees empty space in the middle: Refresh the page using ctrl-F5 in case your browser is using a cached version of the stylesheet.

If feedback on this look is not good, I'm prepared to go back to the old one, but I won't know whether you all like it or not if I don't try it!

Posted by will226 in United States, 10 Jan 2010 14:38

I like it...

Posted by jeffreyjrose in United States, 10 Jan 2010 14:40

Looks great on my PC!

Posted by HQuiff in Ireland, 10 Jan 2010 14:57

Hmm... the Sheet style doesn't seem to be vanishing. I think possibly you could keep it sheet style and put new things in the unused space. I don't mind either way.

Posted by Jon_Brick in Canada, 10 Jan 2010 15:04

It looks kind of weird having a blank spot. It would look better with something there.

Posted by alpha 40 in United States, 10 Jan 2010 15:10

The white background is going to take some getting used to but it is not that bad. I would have to say it is OK.

Posted by bic3 in United Kingdom, 10 Jan 2010 15:32

It looks fine on my screen. I'd give it a thumbs up!

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 10 Jan 2010 15:34

I like the blue background a TEENCY bit better than this one. I don't hate it, though.

Posted by weerwoefski in Belgium, 10 Jan 2010 15:39

I wasn't really wild about the look at first with the big blank in the middle of the screen (Chrome user here!). But by refreshing the page and after seeing the real thing, it's actually pretty cool. More subtle than the old one with only the top being marine blue. I vote for the new look!

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 10 Jan 2010 15:46

I prefer the old look... I liked the blue a lot! Maybe... you could revert to the old colour, but keeping the "widescreen support"!

Posted by exo-force-fan200 in United States, 10 Jan 2010 15:53

I liked the old one better.

Posted by omgbrick in Canada, 10 Jan 2010 16:09

I liked the old one better this one just seems too white and empty.

Posted by Greyface in United States, 10 Jan 2010 16:09

I support Alemas's idea.

Posted by knuclear200x in United States, 10 Jan 2010 16:25

hmm... i dont notice too much change, i changed to widescreen and firefox long ago.

Posted by southpaw in United States, 10 Jan 2010 16:28

Yeah, I like the blue too.

Posted by I like Lego in Canada, 10 Jan 2010 16:33

The website was already okay for me, but the site looks good in white.

Posted by legomarsfan in Bulgaria, 10 Jan 2010 16:34

the blue was better but this is nice too

Posted by Jito in Belgium, 10 Jan 2010 16:37

On my screen it looks like everything is on the left now :( It looks "unnatural" to me now...

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 10 Jan 2010 16:43

@Jito -- Ctrl-F5

Posted by GeøDav in United States, 10 Jan 2010 16:56

Using Safari here. Tweaks look great in my opinion.

Posted by Captain Aardvark in United States, 10 Jan 2010 16:56

I do not like it more than the other version, it looks quite strange.

Posted by Carl in New Zealand, 10 Jan 2010 17:38

i don't like it. to much empty space

Posted by Carl in New Zealand, 10 Jan 2010 17:40

i REALLY don't like it. that huge bar of emptyness is really annoying me.

Posted by rbolsius in United States, 10 Jan 2010 17:48

I don't really like it. Maybe you could have preferences?

Posted by Jed in Europe, 10 Jan 2010 18:11

I like it, if the white space could be changed to blue it would look a bit better but I like the spacing.

Posted by Trandoshan in Canada, 10 Jan 2010 18:23

It looks fine on the Wii, and by that I mean exactly the same, which is fine.

Posted by bluemoose in United Kingdom, 10 Jan 2010 18:28

It looked very odd to me (using Firefox here), until I did what Huw said & pressed 'ctrl' & F5 at the same time, to refresh the page properly. It does look a little different, but I like the 'cleaner' look.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 10 Jan 2010 18:34

I've renamed the stylesheet to prevent the problem you've all been experiencing. Hopefully it looks better now!

Posted by flyguy in Australia, 10 Jan 2010 19:53

looks good on chrome!

Posted by jinxjinx550 in United States, 10 Jan 2010 21:41

I liked the old style better. This one cuts off part of the search window when I have the window at anything less than max size. (I use Firefox on a PC, so I might be just a computer dinosaur.)

Posted by Lego-Dude in Canada, 10 Jan 2010 21:58

Using Safari, there seems to be no difference but white. I does annoy me, like all changes, but I'll get used to it! ;o)

Posted by Imperial13 in United States, 10 Jan 2010 22:22

Meh, don't like it at all really.

Posted by C-Fish in United States, 10 Jan 2010 23:04

Welllll.......... Can't say I like it all that much

Posted by MisterFubar in United States, 10 Jan 2010 23:08

I like it, looks much better to me.

Posted by iabstract in United States, 10 Jan 2010 23:58

Looks good to me.

Posted by MayTheBricksBeWithYou in Netherlands, 11 Jan 2010 01:35

I like it (after a ctrl+F5 indeed). But then again, I'm viewing this @ 1280x1024. So I don't have that much empty space on the sides. It would seem strange how that looks better on a wider screen though.

Posted by Jito in Belgium, 11 Jan 2010 05:12

Ah it looks better with me now.. Good, it looks fresher! The blue color was more playful however :)

Posted by kazooie_pack in United States, 11 Jan 2010 05:33

I have a widscreen, and the sight worked fine before, though i did notice the backround is now a light grey, close to wight.....kinda forget what it used to be.....maybe blue?....I'm on here a few times a day (every day) so i think that i should know what it used to be....sorry...

Posted by michaelvader in United States, 11 Jan 2010 06:18

way better

Posted by StarWarsManiac in United States, 11 Jan 2010 07:34

It's okay, what would be helpful was if you could choose what CSS you want to use.

Posted by HQuiff in Ireland, 11 Jan 2010 09:25

Aha! It's great now!

Posted by cvillone in United States, 11 Jan 2010 10:00

I'm going with the old scheme, to much white for me.

Posted by BrickBob09 in United Kingdom, 11 Jan 2010 10:28

I've got widescreen but i prefer the old scheme. I cant see much difference between the two and some other people dont like it on normal screens so I think it would be better the old way

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 11 Jan 2010 10:50

Out of interest I've just run a report on Google Analytics to find out the most used browser resolutions of visitors to Brickset:

1. 1024x768 Windows 20.55%
2. 1280x800 Windows 15.01%
3. 1280x1024 Windows 13.76%
4. 1440x900 Windows 8.43%
5. 1680x1050 Windows 6.99%
6. 1280x800 Macintosh 3.36%
7. 1366x768 Windows 3.25%
8. 1920x1200 Windows 2.29%
9. 1680x1050 Macintosh 2.23%
10. 1152x864 Windows 2.22%

So, unless you're using anything beyond 1280 wide, the change I made will hardly be noticeable :-)

Posted by vezon8764 in United States, 11 Jan 2010 10:55

I didn't see anything different at all, so I can't complain

Posted by C-Fish in United States, 11 Jan 2010 11:23

I like the old scheme better. I have a wide-screen PC and I can't see how this would be better. I liked the blue a lot.

Posted by Luigi78 in United States, 11 Jan 2010 14:50

Say, does this update have anything to do with the missing Peeron inventory links for all the sets? I'm not seeing them anymore.

-edit- Nevermind, found them! Just not as easy to find as before...

Posted by jughead007 in United States, 11 Jan 2010 16:29

I liked the blue better then white.

Posted by clone commander trainrex in United States, 11 Jan 2010 16:53

I like the new design better.

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 11 Jan 2010 17:36

To be honest, the white sides makes you feel site's very empty. I REALLY want the blue back!

Posted by ARC170Dinofighter in Canada, 11 Jan 2010 17:37

Looks pretty good to me.

Posted by CadKatarn14 in United States, 11 Jan 2010 18:10

I really dont like it. I think it would look better the way it was before. I have a widescreen computer and it had no trouble before.

Posted by kazooie_pack in United States, 11 Jan 2010 20:38

ya.....I swear the backround is a different shade of light grey than it was yesterday......

Posted by Zacherano in United States, 11 Jan 2010 21:21

Thanks so much for fixing this up! It looks much better now.

Posted by Cole85459 in United States, 12 Jan 2010 08:08

I think that the users should be able to change the background color as well. There could be a little bar somewhere on the homepage that allows you to do this, similar to www.yahoo.com's page options tab. If possible, maybe you could have options for the font size as well.

Posted by rudyennina in Netherlands, 12 Jan 2010 09:29

Bleu is much better.

Posted by NeilJam in United States, 12 Jan 2010 10:10

I liked the old blue background more than the current one. As Alemas said, the site looks empty with the blank white background.

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 12 Jan 2010 11:04

To be REALLY honest... this place now looks... sad. Really, with that grey/white background... it feels un-loved! I'm beginning to hate it now... I REALLY don't like it... Sorry Huw, bad decision... Can't you do what I said above? "Maybe... you could revert to the old colour, but keeping the "widescreen support"!" Can't you do it?

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 12 Jan 2010 14:20

Never say I don't listen to you all :-) Consensus seems to be that you preferred the old version, so here it is again, hopefully with the FF and Chrome and Safari fixes intact.

Even I was beginning to find the sides a bit bright on my 1920px wide monitor :-)

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 12 Jan 2010 14:54

YES! BRICKSET'S BACK! LOL, finally, the "real" Brickset is back! I definently prefer this version, no questions!

Posted by jesse73 in Norway, 12 Jan 2010 15:57

Its good to be Blue;o)

Posted by jughead007 in United States, 12 Jan 2010 16:02

WAHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 12 Jan 2010 17:23

BTW Huw, was this change the "lick of paint" you mentioned in December?

Posted by Republic Commando Sev in United States, 12 Jan 2010 17:32

Thanks Huw! I like it this way a lot better.
Sev

Posted by Zacherano in United States, 12 Jan 2010 18:07

Thanks! I must admit, the blue feels fuller and at home in comparison to the white. It was really gracious of you to change it. Keep being such a great web-host!

Posted by Republic Commando Sev in United States, 12 Jan 2010 19:32

Hey Huw, I have a question for you. I know we're supposed to stay on-topic, but I wasn't sure where to ask you, other then here.
You used to have an option that we could see what the highest-rated sets were, but it's been gone for a while, and I can't find it anywhere. Did you get rid of it, or am I just not finding it?
Sev

Posted by C-Fish in United States, 12 Jan 2010 20:19

AHHHHHH!! Much better! Thanks a lot for changing it back!

Posted by legowomen1980p in United States, 12 Jan 2010 21:22

If you have a picture of a set not listed anywhere on the web site.. who do you send it to so they can add it to the site?

Posted by brickmatt in United States, 12 Jan 2010 21:37

@Sev This might be what you're looking for: click on the "More" tab at the top, then on "Data Mining." There you'll find a list called "Top - Rated Sets," which shows the sets given the highest ratings by Brickset members who have reviewed them.

Posted by Republic Commando Sev in United States, 12 Jan 2010 22:21

@brickmatt: Ok, thanks a lot!
