Advent day 21

Advent day 21I can't say I'm too impressed with today's City 'model'. Not only is it fairly boring, and not fire- or season-related, it was also too difficult to isolate from its background due to the soft round white edges of the dishes, so I didn't bother.

Advent day 21The Friends one though, ticks all the boxes. Seasonal, lots of parts and a decent model. The 1 x 1 flower pieces are always useful to have because they allow you to join certain parts stud-to-stud to others. There are plenty in the bag today, including a few spares.

Advent day 21The Star Wars 'Super Battle Droid' makes a welcome reappearance after a few years' absence. It's a figure you can never have enough of if you're recreating Geonosis battle scenes.

City -- 5, poor all round.
Friends -- 9, once again, everything a Advent model should be.
    Star Wars -- 8 useful army-building figure.

Just 3 days to go now (thank goodness!!)

Super battle droids are really annoying, there hands are always breaking and they have really boring pieces. I think 8 is a bit generous. Agree with the city score though, boring, especially for a day so close to Christmas.

The Star Wars one is okay. But the city one today is a disapointment.

Super Battle Droids are not that bad and are good army builders. And their arms only break if you are rough with them or always taking them on and off. The friends is good and the city pretty sad.

The city one seems to be... I don't know, warning lights and sign? Maybe around a collision scene, but... yeah... meh. Three days left - snowmobile, presents, and Santa. Overall though I quite like the city scene. =)

Today's figure is rather nice, but I am pleased that we should now be on to just a couple more mini models (which I generally prefer to Minifigures in these calendars) and then the two main attractions in the Star Wars Calendar! It really has grown better and better as it has gone along hasn't it?

I was impressed with the Super battle droid, until I turned it around.

Re the city background - couln't you have just used some light green paper on the floor?

I was super excited when I opened my Friends door today! This build is perfect, definitely the best one so far. I can't wait to get the Christmas tree! I don't know what the other one will be though, a present maybe? I'm just sad it's almost over.

@Thelegoguy421: Part of what I like about LEGO battle droid figures is the versatility of their parts, so a part that tends to break if it's attached and detached multiple times is a problem for me. I haven't owned a Super Battle Droid since they debuted in the first Attack of the Clones sets, though, so it's possible they're less brittle than they once were.

@GothamConstructionCo: That's something you're going to have to get used to, because frankly ABS (and in fact, most of the harder plastics TLG uses) can't be molded in a solid block. It has to have the walls somewhat thin for the part to cool properly so the surface doesn't become deformed. This is the same reason LEGO horses and most other large animals are pre-assembled. BIONICLE and Hero Factory parts have occasionally used some quite creative solutions to allow thin walls for their typically large pieces, though even many of those end up looking hollow on one side (specifically, many of the 2010 Hero Factory weapon arm pieces).

I like the super battle droids, but I wish it was the version that had one cannon arm.

Tomorrow, will I get a house to go with my Friends fireplace? ;-)

@Ad the brickmaster, sometimes that works atthough you often end up with green edges and green reflections on the shiny plastic surfaces.

Huw, I am wondering what in your eyes makes an advent model a 10? Is it the amount of pieces or just the look and feel of the build?

" The 1 x 1 flower pieces are always useful to have because they allow you to join certain parts stud-to-stud to others."

This is new to me. Which parts can this be done with? Do you have a link?

Those with a recess between the studs, such as the 2x2 boat studs. You can fit one of those flowers in the centre.
