Own a set but still want it?

  • Own a set but still want it?

I have just made an enhancement to the site which many of you have requested: you can now mark a set as owned AND as wanted.  I've also made a few other tweaks 'under the bonnet' which should make the site load slightly quicker and used a new means of updating the site so if you notice any anomalies anywhere, let me know.

I hope you find this useful.

Fantastic idea! So do you mean you own it and still want another? I don't know where you keep sprouting these fantastic Ideas. Really useful as well!

good job!
thank you very much...

Posted by LEGOwikiguy in United States, 05 Feb 2010 15:52

Sweet! That will be good for the battle pack sets, as well as impulse sets.

Posted by Superkalle in Sweden, 05 Feb 2010 16:03

Wow, that was fast ;-)

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 05 Feb 2010 16:31

Wow... I officially LOVE this site. Indeed, it even FEELS loved! Can you tell in a nutshell what that website is saying about this "Site Publisher" thingy? BTW, when will you switch the website to a dedicated server? Just asking... :)

Posted by vynsane in United States, 05 Feb 2010 16:52

what about if you want multiples of the same item? presently you can either want it or not, but you can OWN multiples... might as well add the form to WANT multiples.

Posted by pushin10s in United Kingdom, 05 Feb 2010 17:10

It is a great feature! The WANT multiples would be a good idea as well. I would also like to categorize the sets I have put together and those still in boxes. This might help for collectors with one set built and the other still in the box.

oh yeah! i wanted to do that a while ago when i owned a soldiers fort (pirate set) but wanted another to get a full "[" shaped port. this will help out! so now if you've got 5 battle packs and want 5 more... its easy to record that!! great update!

FINALY!!! thanks i really wanted to remember to get a set that i've destroyed :)

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 05 Feb 2010 18:14

I've used it on the Mos Eisley Cantina set: a family friend gave me the red landspeeder portion of the set, but I would like the rest of it.

@Alemas, Huw and all of the guys are already SUPER dedicated! :P

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 05 Feb 2010 18:19

@jonbuddy(Yay, we meet here!): Well, a dedicated server is... well, I think I need Huw to explain this...

EDIT: From Wikipedia: "A dedicated hosting service, dedicated server, or managed hosting service is a type of Internet hosting in which the client leases an entire server not shared with anyone. This is more flexible than shared hosting, as organizations have full control over the server(s), including choice of operating system, hardware, etc." And here's what Huw currently has(I believe): "A shared web hosting service or virtual hosting service or derive host refers to a web hosting service where many websites reside on one web server connected to the Internet. Each site "sits" on its own partition, or section/place on the server to keep it separate from other sites. This is generally the most economical option for hosting, as many people share the overall cost of server maintenance." Ever faithful Wikipedia...

Great! Thanks.

If you can own more than one set, you can probably want more than one set too. The want should also have a field in which you can enter a quantity.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 06 Feb 2010 03:20

No news on the dedicated server yet, but I'll keep you informed.

Posted by cyrtanthus in South Africa, 06 Feb 2010 03:25

Awesome amendment, how about when you own Multiple Sets to indicate if they are MISB or Open to account for the sets that we build up and the sets we have in MISB in Storage for later.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 06 Feb 2010 05:00

@cyrtanthus, coming soon!

Posted by Formentar in Sweden, 06 Feb 2010 05:48

Excellent. A good time for me to start adding my sets here. I only really returned to LEGO at the end of 2008, and the new sets are slowly starting to pile up. Sadly most of my old ones are in a sad, chewed state. Oh, if I had only had a brick separator when I was a kid. But it could be worse: what I then thought was a fairly big collection of LEGO now looks rather less impressive. But I digress...
Here's what I wanted to ask: One of the sets I'd like to add (Collection K9916 from 2003) isn't in the brickset database. I had a look around but couldn't find any official policy on missing sets and whether there'd be any point in asking to have them added. (I saw that you refer to peeron and bricklink, but there's also the claim about brickset being a definitive list of set from 1980 and onwards.) In this case all but one of the sets in the collection are already on bricklink (3804, 9738, 9916, 10049, 10072, 10074, 10076). The missing part is a 9V motor, listed as 4176779 in my order. Unfortunately K9916 has long ago been removed from the shop and I don't have any pictures of it saved.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 06 Feb 2010 06:02

Welcome onboard, Formentar. There's every point in asking for it to be added: we do aim to be 'definitive' but have some way to go before we are. So, I've added K9916 for you, and if you find anything else missing do let us know.

Noticed a change(AGAIN!): On the set detail pages, you can't click on the image to see it on that "Flash" window! Any reasons for the change?

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 06 Feb 2010 07:36

Hey, you resized the images to make it "fit" on the "frame"! Look here: http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=8455-1 Before, the picture was too big to fit, but now, it does! I think THAT'S the reason Huw took away the "Flash" window from the pic... However, the "Flash" window images are now smaller...

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 06 Feb 2010 07:42

Is it just me, or is it the site zippy? I mean, fast?

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 06 Feb 2010 08:30

@Alemas, yes, I re-sized the images as discussed in another thread somewhere. I will make the larger versions available as additional images in due course.

Glad to hear you think it's quicker: it certainly seems marginally so to me.

I like the idea of being able to both own and want a set on here, but I had a slight problem. I just bought two sets yesterday that I had marked as "I Want," a few minutes ago I went to mark them as "I Own." However, when I unchecked the box for wanting the set, it stayed purple, and when I clicked the box for owning the set, it still stayed purple. I then went to "My Sets" page but these two sets are not listed as "I Own," but "I Want." Not sure what the problem is, but I thought you should know Huw.

@Eerex, I don't think there's a general problem but your browser may have cached the javascript library or something. Try refreshing with Ctrl-F5. What browser are you using?

Posted by Night City Dream in Russian Federation, 06 Feb 2010 14:45

The new upgrade is fine.

But I'd like to see in "MY SETS" some more.
Like this.

For example, I own 220 sets, but 206 are different. The point is that now I have only pieces from 206 sets counted. I'd like to see all the pieces in all my 220 sets counted. Same for minifigs. They are counted only for different sets.

Anyway, thank you for the update.

Posted by Retsnom Kcor in United States, 06 Feb 2010 15:04

Ok, it's fine now. I've been telling the person that owns this computer that they need to stop using Internet Exploder, but... Anyway, thanks

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 06 Feb 2010 15:21

@Eerex: LOL!!! LOVE that typo: Internet Exploder! One reason for using Firefox... REALLY funny... BTW, what do you mean by "the person that owns this computer"? Don't you actually OWN your computer?

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 06 Feb 2010 16:02

@Night City Dream, it does calculate totals on multiple sets. I just created a new account and added 2 x 3222 to my collection and it states:

You own 2 sets (1 different).

We have piece counts for 1 of them. Using that data, together with your set list, we have calculated that you own 534 pieces!

Which is correct.

Posted by alpha 40 in United States, 06 Feb 2010 18:18

I was going to ask about this but it looks like I don't need to anymore. Thanks Huw for yet another great site update.

Posted by kevin30 in United States, 06 Feb 2010 18:23

Thanks so much, I was actually thinking about still wanting the set, that way we can remember what sets we REALLY wanted, even if we now own them! Another great feature!

Sweet thankx! =)

I still request that you allow us to track what we paid for a set... and report to everyone the aggregate price history of each set across time using averages ... in addition to price we should be allowed to tag a quality with some range of choices like mint, very good, bad(missing box), very bad(missing box, instructions) etc...
this way we can see a chart of prices over time with each quality in different colors...
I can't begin to tell you how useful it would be to see historical prices. We have No source for this data atm.
Just current values ala ebay. It would be grand if we could build a better data model to support this.
Note there would have to be some mechanism to ignore outliers perhaps drop the lowest and highest prices in case of silly data entry... or perhaps providing some kind of histogram across each day(low/high/avg) like candlesticks for stocks...

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 08 Feb 2010 14:54

@sidneyleejohnson, all good ideas, some of which I am planning to do in due course, but (a) I don't have time to do everything at once, and (b) if I did what would I do next week :-)

So, give me a bit of time and I'll see what I can do. This isn't my full time job (sadly)...

Hello, is it possible to add the limited edition sets from the San Diego Comic-con please? I have the Indiana Jones set, but I can't find any of the SDCC exclusives on the site. Or am I just hunting incorrectly? Thank you.

Jon

Posted by Assembler in Sweden, 09 Feb 2010 15:03

Nice.

I also have a suggestion for sets that have been owned, but sold off, so they wouldn't show on the total bricks, but it would be funny to see all sets I had as a child.

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 09 Feb 2010 16:22

@Jonny 2 Scarves, I think that because SDCC sets are hidden until purchased and open, letting people give reviews would be giving away the surprise.

Posted by sidneyleejohnson in United States, 09 Feb 2010 17:01

I'll write all the reports in SSRS that you can host with a viewer control. Just give me a db schema and I'll send you the rdl's. :)
