    BrickUltra is reporting that 'LEGO has leaked' screenshots of the forthcoming massively multiplayer online game Legends of Chima Online. You can view more by clicking on the image.

    You will recall a press release, published earlier in the month, described the game thus:

    "In autumn 2013, LEGO Legends of Chima Online, a free-to-play, online world developed by WB Games Montréal, will provide kids with a safe and incredibly immersive connected game experience. Players will be able to build and customize their kingdom in the world of Chima, explore massive environments like the Falling Leaves Forest, take on missions to help Laval and his friends, uncover hidden secrets and treasures, earn rewards, and use LEGO bricks to build weapons, gadgets, and more!

    "The Chima Vault, which houses an exclusive reward system, will be accessible to players on LEGO.com/chima. While playing LEGO Legends of Chima: Speedorz and LEGO Legends of Chima: Laval’s Journey, players will be able to earn points. These points can be redeemed through the Vault for a variety of unique content that players can use to enhance their experience in LEGO® Legends of Chima Online."

    Unlike LEGO Universe, that flopped badly primarily due to its revenue generation model (monthly subscription), this is going to be a free-to-play game. I suspect LEGO is hoping that, by having it so inextricably linked to the models, it will help shift more Chima sets. I wouldn't be surprised if buying sets unlocks additional content somehow, perhaps via the reward system described above.

A bit late to the news, Huw. A friend of mine (shall go unnamed) was a tester and already filmed a whole walk through that was up on YouTube for a few days. He had to remove them later but not before they revealed a lot about the game.

I just hope it is free and not like all other similar online universes for kids where it is free to register and roam the world but to access certain areas, missions, items etc, you have to become a paying member.

Honestly, I would rather play a Lego City adventure MMO. Where I get to build houses,cars, an even have a chance to play a job. More like what I used to play at home or what my kid does now. That would keep his interest. I see too mAny of these starting strong and fading away because kids get bored of them. Sometimes simple concepts are better because they are less thought involved and just more play.

LEGO didn't leak them. Somebody who was courteously granted beta access (like myself) violated the license agreement, and took screenshots themselves.

I was quite disappointed in the TV showing, and that only served to pull me away from Chima that much more. Even my 6 year old agreed Ninjago was much better. I think over here playing the game will be very dependent upon if this series gets any better.

@Jel15/Meiko, actually, the screenshots shown in this article WERE "leaked" by LEGO, they're still frames from that Russian Chima promotional video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6ovvep4FPE#t=157s (I find it ironic that you actually uploaded the specific video I'm linking to here. :P ) You can tell the screenshots here aren't from the actual leaked gameplay as these screenshots show an earlier GUI, from a different version of the game only shown in the official video.

There are at least two people who leaked beta gameplay (and lots of it) onto YouTube, one of them a friend of mine (I think the same person ProfessorBrickkeeper is talking about), but sadly the videos were removed and the people who leaked them have been kicked out of testing.

As for what I personally think of the game... Eh, it looks decent, but from what I've seen so far in the leaked beta videos it doesn't have the same hook that got me into LEGO Universe. Even though I first saw and played LU in a much earlier state in development than this, LU was just more interesting from the get-go even in that really rough state, the basic premise clicked with me. Chima as a franchise hasn't clicked with me like that, and even though I like some stuff I've seen in this game, I can't see myself getting as involved with it as I was with LU.

Chima may have a big enough marketing budget to cover a free-to-play MMORPG, but of course that suggests the game will be about as long-lived as any one LEGO theme you care to name. Even if hugely successful, after 3 years or so Chima will be gone. Hopefully the game engine can be re-used for other themes though.

@Joefish: That may be so, but at the same time that's only logical. LEGO media exists to promote the toys, and any benefits that come the other way around are secondary. Anyway, it seems more sensible to design an MMORPG like this for the short term, rather than having to consistently introduce new content for a userbase that grows smaller and smaller over time. Especially with a free-to-play model.

The gameplay in this looks quite impressive-- like the LEGO Hero Factory Breakout game, it borrows a lot from the Travelers' Tales console titles, but in this case even more so. The fact that a free-to-play LEGO game can have this sort of quality in this day and age is something I never could have dreamed of in my childhood, when even my LEGO PC games tended to be terribly glitchy.

Not planning to play this probably-- I have never been able to convince myself to get involved in any MMOG, since I don't enjoy video games or social interaction enough for a combination of the two to really be worth the time commitment-- but it's great to see that TLG continues to innovate in marketing their non-licensed themes rather than just putting out low-budget flash games. Ninjago has started a great trend (well, I suppose you could argue that BIONICLE started it, but it stumbled a bit along the way), and it's great to see in-house themes getting so much respect without having to apologize or distance themselves from the LEGO brand.

More looking forward to "trying" it. The system sort of resembles LEGO Universe, but it looks like the camera angle is more based off the Traveler's Tales LEGO games. Still, though, I was kinda looking for something maybe a bit more open-ended. This seems a little too "on-rails" for my liking.

So is this going to be limited in a sort of co-op way rather that massively simultaneous play? LU development was in a constant worry over inappropriate interactions, requiring round-the-clock moderation, which in turn introduced huge staff costs and loads of extra bugs and inconveniences for players. Then there were bugs where the programmable actions of your own designs failed exponentially as the number of players present increased.

There are hints the player can re-arrange their own kingdom in this game - maybe re-arrange the basic map segments like roadplates, then invite others to try them out. There was once a plan to make the racetracks in LU like that, but it never happened. That could cross-over to pretty much any theme.
