Add your YouTube videos to Brickset set details pages

  • Add your YouTube videos to Brickset set details pages

Posted by Huw, 04 Feb 2013 09:11. Filed under Brickset.

Many of you like to see, and indeed make, video reviews of sets on YouTube. It's not something I'm going to start doing any time soon, but in recognition of the increasing importance of the media, I've added a new 'Video reviews' tab to set details pages in which video reviews will be embedded.

This is partly in response to suggestions made in the user survey, but also thanks to a request from the team over at YourCreativeFriends who wanted to 'hook up' with Brickset to gain more exposure for their reviews.

So, if you head on over to this page (opens in new tab) you'll notice the Video reviews tab at the bottom.  I've populated the database with links to 70 reviews that YourCreativeFriends sent me, and for that set I've added a couple more so you can see how it'll look when there are multiple videos. At the bottom (if you're logged in) there's a form to enable you to add videos for the set you're viewing.

I suspect, in time, I'll add other ways to view the videos (like the recent reviews page shows newly added reviews) and also editing and deleting facilities. I'll also be contacting the major reviewers to make them aware of it, and to offer to bulk upload their back catalogue.

As always, LMK if you have an comments, problems, or suggestions.

Update: The details for all 330 of The Brick Show's video reviews have been imported into the database. Thanks Jason!

Hmm... I make reviews. This is perfect, now if only I could make them better. :L

This idea is excellent! Youtube is flooded by video reviews and now we going to have it organized right over here on one page! I am looking forward.

^ Yes, but only if you, and others, add the links!

I had an idea for a tab for commercials for the sets. The Chima Wiki has a lot of LEGO Legends of Chima commercials (in HD) that we can upload to YouTube, and we'd love to have them on here.

That's awesome. Great idea.

Thanks @Huw! Great feature. Ok, we are a little biased :-)

This is great! I always enjoy watching video reviews before I purchase a set.

Posted by just2good in United States, 04 Feb 2013 12:08

Great feature! I make so many reviews, and though my earlier ones are not the greatest, I would love to see the integration of some of my more recent ones.

Posted by Brick_Queen in United States, 04 Feb 2013 12:23

Wonderful feature! Much more organized than YouTube. =)

Posted by madaboutlego in Ireland, 04 Feb 2013 12:26

It would be fantastic, But cannot get it to work. Any idea's anyone?

Posted by donster28 in Canada, 04 Feb 2013 12:40

Awesome idea! I was uploading a link myself but does not seem to register. When will it be working?

Posted by The Lego Train Station in United Kingdom, 04 Feb 2013 12:44

Do they have to be reviews, or can they be an animation solely featuring one set? (e.g madaboutlego)

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 04 Feb 2013 12:54

There may still be teething troubles with the data entry, I'll check it out later on...

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 04 Feb 2013 14:13

Problem resolved.

@Brick_Queen, assuming you are BrickQueen on YouTube, per my tweet to you earlier, if you send me a list of your reviews I'll bulk upload them.

@The Lego Train Station, don't see why not, as long as they are relevant. We may start to moderate them in due course if rubbish gets added, though.

EDIT: the error page is nice too.

Posted by masterX244 in Germany, 04 Feb 2013 15:13

^Which error page do you mean?

Posted by Hello_World! in United States, 04 Feb 2013 15:18

This page: http://www.brickset.com/error/default.htm

Posted by just2good in United States, 04 Feb 2013 15:29

Hey Huw, can you bulk update mine?

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 04 Feb 2013 15:29

^^^^ Done, the number in the tab will sort itself out overnight. I'll add a means to manage the links you provide at some point.

When did you see the error message?

^ Sure, send me a CSV with set numbersand YouTube IDs and I'll see to it.

Posted by Hello_World! in United States, 04 Feb 2013 15:58

I've been trying to use hyper links (as described here http://blog.brick-hero.com/p/hyperlinks-in-cuusoo-projects.html) and every time I've tried I end up on the error page.

Posted by just2good in United States, 04 Feb 2013 16:24

For some reason, the video tabs only show one video review every time you click on it. For example, look at this one: http://www.brickset.com/detail/?set=76000-1

Posted by DrDaveWatford in United Kingdom, 04 Feb 2013 16:27

^ Yep, but if you click on one of the links on the left hand side of the video window you can access the other video reviews; I've come across a few that seem wrongly linked, however, so we'll have to fix that.

Posted by Graysmith in Sweden, 04 Feb 2013 16:44

If you're going to add video reviews, I'd highly recommend adding those by Artifex (youtube.com/artifexcreation). They're pretty much the only ones worth watching.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 04 Feb 2013 17:05

^^ ah yes, I can see what's happening! I've changed the code so the videos are randomly listed so that a different one is the default, but it's had this unwanted side effect. I'll sort it ASAP.

I'll contact Artifex and see if he has a list.

Hello_world, make sure they are in one of the formats shown on the form. Actually all that's needed is the 11 digit ID, the rest is thrown away.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 04 Feb 2013 17:49

Fixed. There are now 530 video details in the database -- thanks!

Posted by Hello_World! in United States, 04 Feb 2013 17:53

I've been trying to use them in comments and that's where it doesn't work.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 04 Feb 2013 18:12

Which comments? If news comments, they can't be used, but you can just type the URL and it's turned into a hyperlink.

What about a video with a Lego set compared with one of the competitors? Is that a legal video review to post?

Posted by solidbrixstudios in United States, 05 Feb 2013 01:05

Seriously, I'm always left out of these YouTubes thingys

Ya, I'm real the deal from this channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/legoboy12345678?feature=mhee

How exactly am I suppose to add 100 Review Links?

David

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 05 Feb 2013 03:43

^ Send me a list, set number and video ID and I'll be glad to add them for you. huw[at]brickset.com. That goes for anyone else, too.

Posted by brickboxtv in United Kingdom, 05 Feb 2013 06:20

Great feature Huw and a nice addition to the database, thanks for contacting me and i look forward to adding more content to your already outstanding database.

Posted by flyguy in Australia, 07 Feb 2013 03:48

Thanks for doing this Huw from all the team at www.TekSushi.com and www.flyguy.net The import worked beautifully.

Posted by brickboxtv in United Kingdom, 07 Feb 2013 13:29

Hi Huw
Where is the form to upload youtube review vids?
I have another to add to the database.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 08 Feb 2013 03:58

To prevent drive-by spamming I put a block on new users from seeing the form. I've now changed your join date so that you can get to it now, under the video on the set details page.

Posted by NaMioko in United States, 11 Feb 2013 07:24

This is a super cool idea!

How long do us newbies have to wait to be able to access the form??

Posted by jango e1-g3 in United States, 11 Feb 2013 09:09

Every time I put in the URL and my channel it just says error, enter correct URL,etc
Not sure what's happening, ill try on my computer instead of iPad tonight.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 12 Feb 2013 06:53

Make sure they are in the format described in the notes on the form. If all else fails, just paste in the 11-digit video ID.

^^ 3 months but I can enable it for you if you have some to add.

Does anyone want help on making an intro for reviews on their channel?

Posted by The Brick Station in United States, 22 Feb 2013 18:37

I can't figure out how to put on reviews.
