    ... well, at least, it seems to love some VIPs who've been sent this red-chrome minifig and a Valentine's card.

    mmaldony emailed the picture and said "I received a Valentine's Day card in the mail today from LEGO with an Exclusive LEGO VIP Key Chain - #853303, item #4644591. The card says it is a thank you for being a valued LEGO VIP. It was sent from LEGO UK in Derby to my Austrian address."

    Update: I've had it confirmed by the LEGO affiliate manager that these are being shipped to VIPs in Europe and North America, and most should begin arriving on 7th February.

    Update 2 : We've been told by the folks at LEGO that not every VIP member will get one of these key chains - only "the most active and engaged VIP members based on a list of criteria including purchase frequency". So fingers crossed !

That seems very generous. If that was just for UK residents even then they would be giving away thousands for free, which seems unlikely. Nevertheless, a very nice key-chain.

Wow, that is very attentive of TLG!
Obviously mmaldony must be a very happy Lego VIP, I know I would be, if I was/am to receive a chrome red Lego minifig keychain in the mail form Lego.

That must be sooooo fantastic, finding a package in the mail from TLG, while not having placed an order, if I am to assume that this pleasant surprise was delivered just as a token from Lego, to show their appreciation to the VIP, and thank him/her for being a loyal customer.

I would love to get one of those chrome red key chain too.

ps.

I would love it even more if Lego were to make a chrome red (and a chrome blue etcetera) knight minifig, similar to the pearl gold knight from set #7079 Drawbridge Defense. To be had (maybe for coming Christmas or something) when you place an order, similar to #30250 (Ewar's Acro Fighter) which you got when you placed an order over €50 last January.

I didn't get one, but I think it's not so much about how many $ you spent as it is about how much you bought at full price. Last year I bought over $3,000 worth from LEGO stores and S@H, but almost all of that was 30% off or more.

As nice as that looks, the printing on the LEGO tile appears to be a little dodgy shall we say.

Looking at the keychains from last year that came with the printed tile, the one with this chrome figure looks homemade. If this is indeed a legit item, why would TLG change the printed tile to one which looks worse?

I just spoke with ( s ) at Lego in the US and he said that it is true about the minifigure key chain however to receive one you had to spend $500 dollars in the last year from Lego ( Lego site ) to receive one in the US they will be sending out 40,000 of them to VIP members only hope this helps

Has anyone checked the TLG community guys blog about this? There was a pic of VIP cards with a sticker for LUGs or something a whille back, maybe they mention this too.

We'll see if I get one or not. I'm guessing, "not", considering the infrequency of my purchases on S@H. Here in the Netherlands, internet stores and some brick & mortar stores have the definite edge when it comes to Lego pricing, beating out the 10% VIP discount with ease. It means I've only bought a few exclusive sets through S@H in the last year.

It's not going to matter much to Lego, I'm sure, but not receiving the key-chain isn't going to encourage me to check S@H any more often, whereas if I received one, just by being a VIP member, that probably would improve my customer loyalty slightly. Not fussed either way; I'd be more annoyed if this was an exclusive SW figure they were giving away :)

It seems to me that most people become a VIP because they love and/or like collecting Lego, I dont buy that frequent but do buy the larger UCS, Exclusive sets etc from them so I doubt I will get one, but it seems odd of Lego to alienate one VIP from another and a little unfair, I can understand them not giving out to every account but surely if you spent at least £100/$100 with them in the last year you should get one!

I tend not to buy my lego from S@H in the same way that I wouldn't get by car serviced at a main dealership. Unless you only purchase exclusives (of which I do from time to time), it's just not cost effective to by direct from Lego. I reckon that the money I have saved by buying the Lego eleswhere I could easily buy one of these keyrings from certain auction sites if I wanted to.

My minifigure key chain arrived today. It was in a red sealed envelope that says in the bottom right, "LEGO VIPs: Exclusive Sneak Per view Inside!". Once opened, the card says "Happy Valentines Day!" with the red mini fig pictured on the front.

"As a thank you for being one of our most valued LEGO VIPs, enclosed please find a FREE, exclusive LEGO VIP keys Chain that you can't get anywhere else!"

There is also a sneak peak of the upcoming offers through April 8th.

I guess this rules me out. I only spent about $100 this year. I spent like 5x that much other places like, (cough), walmart and Amazon. I don't live near a brand store, so that complicates things. I am also driven off by the shipping prices of S@H. I want 2 Series 7 Minifigs for $5.98, And I have to pay like $6.95 to ship them. Defidently not worth it. It they have infinite free shipping on orders over $50 all year round, I would be getting one of these key chains, if you get my point.

In the EU anyway, there are just 9,000 to go around. They will be issued to the highest spenders who must have spent a minimum of £250 (or equivalent) and have made at least 5 seperate transactions over the past 365 days.

So I finally took the time to calculate my order totals and I spent:

ONLINE - $1500+
INSTORE - $625+

But unfortunately, I only buy Legos in May, December and January on Lego.com. So if I don't get the keychain, I can confirm that frequency really counts.

I didn't spend that much. I know the Haunted House, and the Winter Cottage online and I just fot mine today. Now that I think of it, I did buy a couple of small items instore in about three different states. (Chicago, Indianapolis, and Orlando.) Maybe this helped.

Hi all, ok I received a shiny red envelope from Lego this morning which means I got one, thank you Lego...... But what I thought you might find of interest is what my VIP account history was in the last 12 months , I have 612 points saved at the moment with 15 purchases, not all large sets some were just the odd poly bag, money spent was probably just under £400, so if your account is anything close to this or indeed more you surely should receive one as well, hope this is of help.

I've just worked out that I spent over £800 between Shop at Home and both Westfield London stores through out 2012, large purchases, small poly bags and fairly frequently over the course of the year and I haven't got a keyring!! I've always completed the online surveys I've been asked to do by store staff via my receipts and anything that comes up via social media or elsewhere. Without using any harsh words....I'm extremley annoyed.
I know it's only a small thing but when it comes to exclusives like this Lego really should, consistently, look after people who not only spend money on their products but invest in their brand or not bother at all!!!! (I wonder how long I'll stay annoyed enough not to buy anything for a while)

I just received mine, was really quite surprised to be honest. I mean, I've put in maybe 12 or so orders over the past year online, totalling somewhere between £500-£700, plus whatever I've spent in store (maybe another £300 or so). Truthfully, I didn't think that would be enough to qualify.

Have faith obiron17. We moved a year ago and my husband's redirected lego catalogue regularly arrives before mine that come direct to our new address, such are the vagaries of Royal Mail. Give it a few days before you give up hope. My spending pattern was like yours for last year and I have just received a package. Hope the postman brings you more joy tomorrow

Well I've got my fingers crossed. Spent almost £650 in the last 12 months. If I don't get one though how can I complain? It's a free gift which Lego are entitled to give to whoever they like. Will it stop me buying Lego? No!

I might feel just a little bit more loved if I do get one though. :)

I seriously doubt that recipients were selected by $$$$ spent. Although I did make some purchases at the Lego store in Ontario, Ca , according to my VIP totals I spent $672 That doesn't seem like much compared to the masses. I spent far more at Amazon. If Lego offered free shipping on any order over $25.00 I would probably double my spending with them. I wonder if the VIP survey had to do with the selection process??

UPDATE 3:
Just got of the phone with lego, and they told me only a very little group of big buyers would receive one.
How few???, they were not allowed to say.
The few things I got out of him:
1. you need to have bought at least 5 or more orders in the last few months,
2. the total price of orders must be very high, how much, he was not allowed to say,
3. lego was sure this promo was not succesful.

!!In other words LEGO DOES NOT LOVE US, ONLY THE ONES WITH $$$$$$$ THAT SPEND IT AT SHOP @ HOME!!

My question for you guys is: Is lego still for children, or just for collecters with a lot of $$$$??

Hearing that kind of thing makes me not want to continue my hobby of LEGO. If it isn't enough that the comic con and toy fair minifigs/sets fetch outrageous ebay prices, they want to keep adding to that rather then making people just happy. And not only the ones already happy who can afford to empty their wallet everyday.

If they are really sending them to only big spenders, then I probably will stop spending my money on them. I have a total of 636 VIP points. Im slowly starting to not feel the same about LEGO as I did when I was younger, and when I got back into LEGO. All thanks to things like this. Just reading all of these comments about people being excited, only to find out more and more information that they most likely won't be getting one.

Just got mine last night. It's pretty great to get something from a company that genuinely shows appreciation like this.

I know some people who didn't get one are upset and feeling left out, but I'd just like to say:
1.) It's a keychain. Not even a real minifig that you can take apart properly and do anything with. Just a neat-looking keychain that I won't even use because I'd scuff it up.
2.) Lego already offers a discount to frequent buyers through the VIP program which is explicitly tied to how much each user spends. If they take the top people from that program and send them a freebie as a "thank you," how does that seem out of line with the existing arrangement? They're still a for-profit company after all and they want to encourage big spenders.
3.) Haters gonna hate.

This has made me even more annoyed and disillusioned about the V.I.P programme and Lego. This evidences that it's just about money money money and as mush as they go on about values blah blah blah and how V.I.P members are treated differently it's obviously not that important to them beyond how much you spend!!
After working out I spent just over £800 directly with Lego, and not all at S@H, I worked out I'd spent another £900 in 2012 at Argos, Smyths, TRU etc, due to not wanting to pay for postage, and whilst I'm sure it won't be long before I'm buying my next set I'll be buying it from somewhere else besides worrying about building up my V.I.P points.
My 11 year old nephew (who's also a huge lego fan) texted me about an hour ago asking if I had a keyring and was hoping to get one himself.........I wasn't going to be the one to tell him he hasn't got a cats chance in hell of getting one as he probably only spends £100 a year on average out of his pocket money.

This is a very poor customer relations excercise from Lego and shame on them.

@ orwellian. It's not about the keychain, it's about lego making differences between vip-members.
All vip-members are equal, one can't be better because he buys more at shop at home.
A normal chield spends not more then 200 euro's of pocket money, that's a normal minimum.
Myself I only buy exclusive sets at lego.com for over 500 euro's at a time. All other city sets I buy at a store
near me because it is way cheaper (a set of 6 euro's is only 4 and a set of 80 euro's is just 65 or less)

@gifinim: I hope maybe I will get one too then. (although the man set if you have not heard anything yet you probably
won't get one)

And for all who thing I hate lego, I don't. I'm just disappointed is them.
Ans the earlier message was just telling the community about what they told me.

Me again...Figure this one out: my Mother has just rang me to say she's had a keyring and card, addressed to her, delivered today. I had the Town Hall set delivered to my parents house in Dec as one of my Christmas presents from them and when I ordered it I used my V.I.P account but my Mothers credit card to pay for it. I can't work out how Lego have come to the decision to send my Mother one when she's only spent £149 in 2012 as why would they address it to her when the V.I.P account is clearly mine?? (Their address was only used once for delivery)
It's all a bit strange and now I just need to convince my Mother to give the keyring to me now as I hope she was joking about putting it on eBay ;)

I haven't received one yet, I am pretty sure there must be other criteria, as I made about 34 purchases over the past year, spent about £2600 with Lego online and about £200 at the Lego store opening weekend in Manchester. I will be delighted if I am lucky enough to receive one, although I certainly don't expect anything. I like the majority of Lego fans (I hope) get great enjoyment out of buying, gifting, receiving, building and collecting Lego. Gifts like this key chain and other freebies are just a very welcome and unexpected bonus.

Just got mine in the post. Very nice keychain. Why is everyone now dishing Lego about giving them out ? When just a couple of days ago when the story broke everyone was so excited ? True I spend a fair bit on Lego but I adore it and it is nice to get a little something back. Why would anyone put them on eBay ? Amazed me people were putting the grand opening Lego stores on there. Anything for a quick buck. Some people love Lego for what it is and should get a little something back for their passion. A big fat thank you Lego from me :-)

Hmm seems to be a bit of a backlash from some posters being disappointed - but why?

This was a genuine catchup with people Lego determine to be valuable customers and giving them a nice thank you.

I've read people explaining how much they spend on Lego away from lego.com and lego stores but are just as loyal and have not received something; GRRR ARGH!

This isn't an insult from Lego to you personally, if you dont buy through their tills how can they know how to thank you? Thats all Lego VIP is - a system to be able to send you rewards and offers based on your purchases so surely Argos, Amazon, Smyths and Toys r Us should be the people you are getting angry with for not rewarding you?

Oh and I disagree with some posters above saying this is a PR stunt gone bad; giving away Lego through The Sun newspaper is a stunt gone bad. It is common knowledge there are many people who would not ethically buy that particular newspaper and Lego places them in an impossible position - that I would agree is when Lego get it wrong and it becomes an insult.

Why are some bricksetter's here acting like spoiled children. If you don't get one. Deal with it. If Lego wants to reward higher spenders then so be it. Lego every month gives stuff away...MMMB builds, spend $35 you get a poly, spend $50 you get a poly, spend $99 get a poly....Club meetings give away shirts, toys, coupons, even mini-figs at some events. Grand openings have trivia where (at the ones I've been at) have given away from $10 sets up to $200 sets.
At TRU Lego events you get free polys, superhero shield mosaics, comics, etc.
Do you really feel 'slighted'? Get over it.
If I don't get one, trust me I won't feel slighted, I'll still enjoy Lego and go online or the store to get a freebie.
What you need is your father's to tell you...son, you don't get to get everything in life. Then smacks you in back of the head to bring to back to reality.

I don't think the amount of money spent at Shop@Home in the last year has any bearing on whether VIP members receive one of these key rings. I think LEGO have chosen VIP members completely at random. It's a lottery. How else do you explain the fact that someone who spent only £149 received one, while someone who spent almost £3000 didn't?

I don't mind if it's indeed a lottery. I just wish LEGO would be honest and say it's a lottery, rather than claim it's based on how much VIP members spent.

Well I got home this afternoon to find a nice red envelope on the kitchen table. After reading the supposed required criteria I was very surprised to see that I had received the keychain. I spent £170 on S@H and in stores. The rest of my Lego purchases came from Amazon, Argos, Smyths and my local toy shop. I've spent nowhere near the amount some of you guys have directly with Lego, and yet I have been sent one. Go figure. Unless all this talk of needing to have spent x amount of ££££s etc is just that, all talk.

If I hadn't been sent one though I'd be a little disappointed yeah, but certainly not bitching and moaning like some of you folk. It's a minifigure keyring for gods sake, a plastic one at that. Grow up.

It seems that some who are getting the figure are seeing that it's acceptable to rub it in the faces of those who haven't got a figure which is not a nice thing to do.

As I mentioned further above, I don't have a figure. I also don't expect to get one since I didn't even receive a January catalogue which I found odd.

It should just seen as a bonus and be made clearer from the beginning on what the exact criteria is to receiving one to stop the arguments about it.

I personally think a better approach for LEGO to do this would have been to send them out to random customers. I've spent about £800 online at S@H and a minimum of £300 at brand stores over the last year but have not received one. If I do over the next few days I will appreciate it. If I don't then I can't really be annoyed about not receiving it, but to think I am not as valued as other customers just doesn't seem right. This just annoys people as shown on the posts above. Sending to random customers would have got rid of this and would have been like getting a golden ticket!

I finished my tower bridge last night and am delighted with it. That is what Lego is all about for me the fun of building a model then the feeling you get from finishing it. Is getting a keying that important to some of you ? The fact Lego put so much thought into what they create for us all to enjoy must surely be more important ?

Here here Matt! I'm with you. LEGO is about building, creating and playing. If you feel that how much you spent on LEGO and a getting keychain are more important you're missing the point.

In my lifetime of experience with LEGO they have been one of the few remaining good companies. They are generous, responsive people who care about their customers.

I think af.riem has been fed a line or is feeding us one, because i'm not the biggest spender or the most regular purchaser and I got home today to find my key-ring in the mail. I've certainly spent way less (approx £400 in the last year) than several of those who have commented above who have not yet received one. I say 'not yet' because surely local mail services and the vagaries of transport will mean these will continue to arrive to VIPs for several days.

And as for the promo being a success? Well over 100 comments here and articles elsewhere make me think it's having it's desired effect!

I'm very grateful to receive this nice gift and I hope others who are part of the scheme get them too. It's a shame to hear people moaning about not getting one (I certainly didn't expect one based on my spending) but I suspect it's likely some of the same people who whinged about the Team GB figs only being available in the UK, or that they don't get polybag deals, etc. Sorry folks, but we don't all get the same deals, or pay the same price for things, or get the same weather, etc. That's life.

I live in Claremore, Oklahoma and received one today. The nearest LEGO store is in Oklahoma City, about 2 hours away, so all my direct LEGO purchases are from shop.LEGO.com. I didn't think I spent much with LEGO last year but my Account History says otherwise. Yikes! Maybe it's the fact I've yet to redeem any of my 3000+ VIP points? Simple pleasures for simple minds so a shiny keychain works for me!

It is interesting to see everyone saying about it only being big spenders, I recieved my keychain today and I am definatelly not a big spender, probably less than £300 in the last year! I do wonder if it also looks at your other related activities. i browes S@H regularly, when ever we are in a store we take part in the treasure hunt or what ever else they are doing in store, so maybe your interaction with LEGO counts as much as your actual spending!

Huzzah! I got home last night to discover an A5 sized red envelope with a picture of this chrome red coloured chap on the front and a message that read something like "Here's a little something/valentine for you from Lego". I had a feeling it might be one of these so opened it up as carefully as possible and, sure enough, there it was. It's a brilliant little gift and was wholly unexpected. Having said that, when I think about it, I have spent an almost inordinate amount of money on Lego over the past 12 months. Best not reveal to the Wife why they *really* sent it to me...lol

I didn't get the discount (voucher?) that was posted to some VIP members previously, so was well chuffed when I received the keyring this morning. In the last year, I have made more than 5 orders online, bought quite a few of the exclusive sets, and have also shopped in the Westfield store a few times (3-4)? Hope this helps anyone who's trying to work out the criteria!

Also, have to add that their customer service is always excellent. And this is regardless of whether you are a child or adult, have spent tons of money at S@H or not. So IMHO, it's not always just the money.

I got one too. I'm very happy with it, and I don't think this promo is as unfair as many here say it is. If you're a VIP member, you're already getting benefits over regular customers just for signing up. This is just Lego showing appreciation to some of their most frequent shoppers. Besides, it's just a shiny keychain, not Phoenix or Shazam or something. Let's just be happy that Lego does promotions like this at all.

Hello, @Margot, :-) they might not have bought very much, but they might be the most active members for their regions. I live in the metropolitan, so I don't expect to receive it. No matter what, like you posted earlier, we "will always love you LEGO!" Thanks Matt and Sputnix keeping us focus on the positive side of this wonderful Valentine giveaway. Congrats to those who received one.

Received two in the mail, despite the back of the card stating a limit of 1 per household. The husband and I each maintain our own VIP accounts, and they were addressed one to each of us, but I'm still a bit surprised. I've earned almost 2600 VIP points since joining, but that's got to be over about 3 years or more at this point. 2012 was a "down" year for me as well, so I've really no idea what the criteria was. Just a happy little treat, especially since my favorite color is red.

Just got mine yesterday. I'm in Canada, so maybe Canada was shipped late. I spent about $800 last year across 12 transactions at the lego store and lego.com.
