    We've pulled out all the stops today to bring you new images of another year: 1972. It was a great year for trains, with nearly 1/4 of all sets released this year being train related. As in previous years, the models of vehicles were in two scales: 4 wide LEGOLAND models and 6 wide which were more detailed. The first educational sets were released this year (but the Dacta name was not used until later) and also the first sets with 4 digit numbers, two of which were among the first co-promotional sets 1550 and 1551, for Sterling Airways, a Danish airline.

171 (Train Set without motor), which is pictured at the top of this thread, was the first 'big' set I can remember being bought as a kid. I recently managed to buy a nice boxed example with instructions on eBay and it brought back so many memories. Thanks to Huw and Bluemoose was feeding my nostalgia fetish with all these lovely pics of old sets from my youth !

Keep 'em coming !

Speaking of 70's sets, would you happen to have that set that was once knocked over in That 70's Show? It was in the first season...some space station or something.

I like that you're adding all this older stuff. I was wondering how complete the archive is? Is there a certain year forward from which you have every set they released or is there a whole bunch of stuff in the pre-internet era that's still missing?

@carding, all will be revealed soon :-)

Going back to the classics!

I can't wait for 1975 to be added, the year I first had boxed lego sets for myself instead of my brothers cast-offs! I'm still kicking myself for getting rid of it all a couple of years later.

Huw,

You may need to revise part of the update: You wrote "the first sets with 4 digit numbers", yet I believe a number of four digit set numbers had been in use in the 1950's and possibly 1960's in Europe, such as 1210 (http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?S=1210-2)

@DrDaveWatford
I can feel with you. This was the first big (I was four, so it was big) set I got as a kid, christmas 1974. I still have it (minus the box), but it's shows it's age and the fact that I played with it for a good ten years. Funnily enough, the stickers are still intact, but I'm missing the yellow headlights...otherwise it still makes a decent picture while traveling around those blue tracks.
You said it, nostalgia...
