Land Rover Defender Achieves Review Status, i.e. 10k supporters

  • Land Rover Defender Achieves Review Status, i.e. 10k supporters

Posted by glenbricker, 28 Feb 2013 10:49. Filed under Cuusoo.

The Land Rover Defender, thanks to a surge of support from LEGO fans and tweets from Land Rover getting their own fan base informed, has achieved the 10k support required to enter the Spring review.

This is by far the most technically complex build to achieve the 10,000 supporter mark.

Personally I love dynamic, complex builds so I would love to see this hit production.

The Official Comment for 10k does not reveal any new details about the project or Cuusoo, unlike the most recent Zelda did about new molds, but the design has not changed since the Official Comment at 5k which did have plenty to say:

"After seeing this in person at the LEGO Fan Weekend in Skærbæk, Denmark, we're even more impressed! However you know how huge and intricate your model is, and while it is a feat of engineering, the piece count and complexity would make it rather challenging to produce."

The implication is clear that Lego is doubtful about this project as presented.  With previous projects, Lego has shown a flexibility in artistic reinterpretation to meet the goals of the projects, Lego standards, and the approval of the market.  It will be very interesting to see if Lego will embrace the core concept that I think the project fans are looking for: a UCS Technic* Land Rover Defender and modify the design for marketability and producability.

I will not be surprised if Lego turns this down for its complexity.   If it does reach production I am sure many fans will be disappointed that it will not be the exact model that Sheepo has presented, but I will satified if Lego makes something a little more conservative in part count and complexity but still pushing the boundaries of their "normal" technical builds.

All that being said, for those that will only be satisfied by Sheepo's design, they have made the design available for a price.

Footnote:  I borrowed the term "UCS Technic" from brickset user meccanotwitch.

Spell check anyone? Land Rover Devender ... archived support... tut tut

Great news, but I fear this is a project doomed to failure in the review process, the model is simply too complicated I reckon for popular sale. By the way, as Duq says above, 'Devender' needs changing, and I think you mean 'achieved' rather than 'archived' in the first paragraph.

@ Duq & CapnRex101

Doh! Thanks. I keep forgetting that Titles are almost never checked by the spell checking system and well, technically "archived" is spelled correctly. Still rather embarrassing. Thank you for calling it to my attention.

@CapnRex101. I must agree with you if for no better reason than Lego said as much in their 5k Official note and to my knowledge, not a thing has been done to simplify the process. I am very interested in whether or not Lego will overlook the specifics and pass a "rather" complex Land Rover instead.

I think a big part of it depends on the feedback they have collected from Supporters. If the most common feedback is "I want a Land Rover" that is one thing, but if instead it is "give me the most complex technical automobile ever just like this one" then that would be another.

I hope in case of failure someone will come up with an instruction on how to build it yourself. I would love to spend my money on the required parts just to call this gem mine.

It's about time Lego released a technic model that creates a challenge to the builder.
This model fits that bill in all aspects. It could be the first UCS Technic model. We have had most of the others themes recreated as UCS, so why not Technic?

@henry9112 you can build this yourself, instructions are available http://www.sheepo.es/2013/02/land-rover-defender-110-instructions.html

^^^^ I said it showcases what's possible with Lego in my reason, hopefully comment like that will give it a good chance.

You did it, just in time for the Spring Review deadline! Again, great work and we're impressed with all of the detail and functionality that you have put into the Land Rover Defender 110.

Congratulations on achieving 10,000 supporters. We now officially advance this project to the Review phase.

I don't know if you noticed that Land Rover just indroduced Electric Defender. It will be presented on Geneve Autoshow 2013. I guess that it would be a nice addition if LEGO just at this time presented Sheepo's Electric Defender ! ;)

Problem is, this set would cost at least $350 and be the largest set ever produced with 3436 parts. This set may not pass review due its size

There is no chance lego will be able to make it as a set bit it will be interesting to see what lego will come out with
