Introducing the Brickset Web Service

  • Introducing the Brickset Web Service

Want to write a Facebook plug-in that interfaces with Brickset? Or an Android application?

The Brickset Web Service provides the means for these, or any other kind of application, to interface with the Brickset database. There are already two iPhone apps in the works which use it, and with your help, there could be apps for Android, PC, Mac, Symbian and even BlackBerry. I am unlikely to find the time (or have the skills) to write them all, so by exposing the core functionality of the site as a web service I will hopefully encourage those that do have them to do so.

Read the documentation to get started!

So is this just for web/mobile device applications, or could you write a desktop application for a PC or laptop that you could use to manipulate your set data?

Any type of app you can think of, that can interface with web services.

It seems hard to find anything to add to the already great Brickset.

But this is quite a nice idea, and the openness of it is sure to pay off.

Do you plan to include web method for getting mySets list?

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 13 Jun 2010 14:19

@Zidane, it's already implemented, via the search operation.

nice, thanks. Few notes:

- http://www.brickset.com/webservices/brickset.asmx?WSDL isn't working
- will you add JSON in the future?

Wow this is actually GREAT! We are building a web site for our local LEGO club and we will try to use some of the great features you have provided.

Thanks!

@UnitronOne, what do you mean, not working? I get the WDSL returned to me as XML when I try, as expected.

No plans to add JSON, but that's not a bad idea. I just don't know how :)

Excellent work, Huw!

@UnitronOne. You may just need to do a "view source" in your web browser to show the xml wsdl. That's what I needed to do is Chrome.

@Huw. Great work on the web service. I write them at work all day, so not sure I want to write more while I'm home. :) Nice work, you sure do keep yourself busy.

@HUW not to be rude but there are a bunch of typing errors in the documentation

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 14 Jun 2010 02:19

@chrisdog, they are not jumping out at me: please point them out.

@cvillone, in asp.net it only takes about 10 lines of code...

I'll definitely be using this Huw.
