We wish all Brickset users a Merry Christmas and a happy, prosperous New Year -- and hope Santa brings all of you, plenty of rattling boxes!

2007 is Brickset's 10th anniversary and it's been a great year for the site. Traffic has virtually tripled over the year from 150,000 visits and 700,000 page views in January to nearly 400,000 visits and 2.2 million page views in November. We've added some great new features, not least of which are the direct product links to LEGO Shop At Home that are now making the site a small amount of money which'll go towards its up-keep. Thanks to everyone who has bought stuff from S@H after clicking through from Brickset.

I hope we can continue to improve the site in 2008 to make it even more useful to you. Please keep the news and ideas coming. It's your site, tell us what you want to be able to do on it!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Thanks for all your work - it is much apprieciated.
All through the house not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. But a bunch of mini figures were creating a rucus.
Yeah, I know, it doesn't rhyme but after getting hold of the new star wars rebel soldiers who cares.
merry christmas everyone, may Lego be with you

Merry Christmas and thanks so much Brickset! You guys are the real Lego Legends! Now it's off to build some 8275 bulldozer mayhem! First task: demolish the cat...

Posted by bmwlego in United States, 25 Dec 2007 08:24

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate it. I can't wait to begin building later on in the day.

I too believe that the site admins do a commendable job and would like to thank them for offering us LEGO fans a forum for our opinions and thoughts. I love the way we share sale info with each other because saving money is always important...it helps us buy more LEGO!

As for what we would like to see on the site, I have a few ideas and I am curious to see what other bricksetters feel. I would like to thank Huw for even opening up a discussion for this topic. Perhaps after the ideas are in, we could discuss them to see which ones would be most beneficial and would enhance or streamline our experience on brickset.

1-I would love to be able to view my review/scores on the "My Sets" page. Every time I write a new review I have to check my reviews first to see if I reviewed a set already. I have 8 pages of reviews and this is not time efficient. It would be great to see our review score underneath the brickset average score for each set in our "My Sets" page.

2-It would be nice to know which administrator is responsible for certain topics. For instance if we wanted to report on a sale we see in an ad, it would be helpful to know which admin to write to, instead of sending everything to Huw.

3-Is it possible to highlight your own discussion threads a separate color, much like the admins are in yellow? This would make it easier to see your quote and then see if it has been responded to or to let you know where you left the discussion the previous time you visited the site. I am not asking for each bricksetter to have a different color, just 1 color that corresponds to your ip address so you can locate your quotes quickly. In other words, this color would be the same for everyone but would only highlight the individual's ideas based on the person's ip address.

Other than those 3 small suggestions, I have nothing but compliments for the way the site works. I enjoy contributing to the site's reviews and discussions. I enjoy being able to keep track of which sets I own. The site is beautiful and a pleasure to look at. If my 3rd idea seems hard to understand I am sorry but if anyone would like further explanation I am more than happy to do so.

Happy Christmas to all bricksetters! Enjoy the time with family and loved ones. After all, as the Grinch learned, "Maybe Christmas doesn't come from a store, Maybe Christmas means a little bit more!"

I got some great lego sets for Christmas and I hope many other people did too. I think that bmwlego's suggestions are very good; however adding many features to the site can give it a tacky look.

Marcus

Posted by bmwlego in United States, 25 Dec 2007 10:03

I have faith in the admins to add new features that would NOT give the site a tacky look. I mean look at the site, it is beautiful. One change is just on your own "My Sets" page. One change is to the discussion posts (one color for your own posts). The other suggestion would just be an addition to the contact section. Maybe even a little "About the Administrators" section so we know who we should contact, who to compliment for a job well done, etc.

Thank you so much Huw, and whoever else is an admim or designer, you helped me know that Indiana Jones lego actually existed. A suggestion is, we should be able to track OUR posts, be able to do quotes and stuff like that.

Posted by mtow~255000 in United States, 25 Dec 2007 17:33

Yippy. I got 4 new exo force sets as opposed to 3. The 3 new 2008 human battle machines and the Combat Crawler X-2!! The other set was a castle skeleton prison thing. : )

Happy Holidays

I got 3 rattling boxes! One was the Droids Battle Pack, and the other two were the MB-01 Eagle Command Base and the MT-21 Mobile Mining Unit. I just finished putting together the MB-01 Eagle Command Base. Reviews are coming soon.

I like silly quacks idea.

Merry christmas to all i hope santa treated you all very well.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 26 Dec 2007 05:38

bmwlego, thanks for your suggestions which I'll address below:

1. You or someone else has asked about this before. I *think* it will be possible to do, although the database query will be fairly complex because, of course, it'll need to show different data for each user. The 'I Want/own' does this already so I'm sure it can be done.

2. There are three admins currently:

- Me: I do all the website techy stuff, import the S@H data feed and respond to new set news that gets emailed to us.

- Grahame is the main database administrator and makes sure all themes/subthemes are right, set names are added when we know them and adds other information like piece counts.

- Shima55 keeps an eye out for newsworthy things to post on the home page and will respond to news items that are sent in.

That said, we all do a bit of everything.

3. That's a good idea. I'll add that when I'm next working on the code. I'm sure there is a lot more that could be done with 'discussions' although I don't want to turn them into an unsightly unreadable unusable mess by adding avatars, signatures, emoticons and other superflouous features that many forums do (e.g. Eurobricks)

Thanks to all of you for your kind words :-)

I'd like to make a couple of suggestions regarding the "Sets I Want", and the "Sets I Own" lists. Would it be possible to arrange sets in order other than ascending by set number (Ascending/Descending by year, Ascending/Descending by name, Ascending/Descending by rating, and of course descending by set number), I think it used to be like this once...

Also, could you implement a feature to let you know when you added a set to your list?
Thanks, Mr. D

Mr Dunlop,

If you have Vista or an RSS reader you can subscribe to the new set feed at http://www.brickset.com/rss/default.aspx which'll keep you up to date.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 28 Dec 2007 06:00

redfox,

I'd love to add more countries but LEGO only has affiliate schemes for the US and UK markets which means that the data for prices and availability is only available for those countries. Adding it for others would be a case of entering it manually and that's not something I have the time to do.

Huw, what I think you should do to modify this site is try to make stronger ties with the Lego Group. Maybe then you'll be able to post more accurate information faster, and you'll have a direct feed of information from the Lego Company. Just sayin'.

PLENTY OF RATTLING BOXES: I'm an insufferable braggart, but I can't pass up this opportunity to list the LEGO sets we got for Christmas. I've been buying LEGO sets every payday for the past six months and stashing them in the closet for Christmas morning. My two-year-old son received Duplo Castle Sets 4777 Knights' Castle, 4776 Dragon Tower, 4777 Knight and Squire and 4784 Black Dragon. He also received Duplo Train Sets 3771 Starter Set, 3353 Spencer, 3354 Gordon, six copies of 3774 the bridge, and finally City Set 7235 Police Motorcycle; for a total of 9 sets. My five-year-old daughter received Duplo Princess Sets 4820 Castle, 4828 Royal Stables. She also received Belville Sets 7577 Winter Palace, 7581 Winter Stables, 7580 Skating Princess, and finally two Mosaic sets 6162 and 6163, for a total of 7 sets. I received Viking Sets 7019 Fortress, 7021 Double Catapult, 7017 Catapult, 7016 Boat, 7020 Army; Knights Kingdom Sets 8877 Vladek's Dark Fortress and 10176 King's Castle; Creator Sets 4894 Mythical Creatures, 4915 Mini Construction, 4916 Mini Animals, and 4918 Mini Flyers; Mosaic Sets 6162 and 6163; and finally Factory Sets 5524 Airport and 5525 Amusement Park, for a total of 15 sets and a grand total of 31 sets. It was a very LEGO Christmas! I should have thought to take the week off work so I can put all these sets together!

FEATURES: I sure do enjoy this site, and I would like to join bmwlego who wrote that the design and overall look of the site is excellent. One of my favorite current features is that I can select a list of all the sets in a given theme and the ones I already own show up in green and the ones on my want list show up in yellow. It's really a big help as I attempt to prioritize my next acquisition. To that end, I would parrot Mr. Dunlop's suggestion that we be able to sort our wanted list by year or theme, and if it could show the date we added it to our list, that would be super-cool.

I also like the little voting buttons where we can check off if we found a particular review useful. I know Amazon.com includes this feature as well. I've noticed that on Amazon, the review are ranked and listed with the most useful at the top. That would be a great feature to add. Also, I think that if a review scores low enough, it should be deleted, but I'm not sure how low that score would have to be, maybe 0 out of three or 0 out of 10. In order to implement this, you might have to limit voting to users who are logged in. I would also really like to edit my reviews. In the past, I have written reviews based only on the cover art, and then after I buy the set, I have something more interesting to write.

I also like Fighter95's suggestion to include the manufacturer's suggested retail price for each set. This is information that Peeron includes in their database.

Glaedelig jul!

Ya'll are lucky I got 3 sets. Container Stacker, Heavy Hauler and The green 8 dollars Exo Force figure. Better than nothing but I still want to buy dwarves mine!

Happy new Year, by the looks of the set it will be!

Posted by Leggodt94 in United States, 30 Dec 2007 01:09

I guess I should have said this earlier but I got four sets for Christmas. And I like Jason's idea of being able to modify your reviews. There have been times I wish I could have done that. :)

Posted by tauntaunwampa in Australia, 30 Dec 2007 05:48

G'day Huw
I think that a chat room for the LEGO Themes could be put in to place, I think that would be a good idea for people who are thinking about buying sets to talk to people who already have the set. I also think that instead of just writing down what we like we could show pictures of the custom LEGO sets that we made and have a more larger view on the profiles.

I requested a feature that would allow me to sort the sets on my wanted list, but I just figured out how to do that using the export my sets list, so I thought I would outline the steps here in case I’m not the only one who didn't know how to do this. (1) First, go to you set list and click Export my sets. This will take you a page that lists all your sets in very boring looking text strings. (2) Click the [File] button on the menu bar of your browser window and choose [Save As]. The default file name will include the suffix .csv. I think this stands for commas separated values, but it's really cool because after you save a .csv file, you can open it in Excel. I love Excel. I use it all the time at work and at home to keep my things organized, so anyway, (3) save the file somewhere you will be able to find it again. I always save mine to my desktop at first and then save it to my LEGO folder later. Change the file name if you like, but don't change the suffix (.csv) (4) Open the file from it's saved location. It should open automatically in Excel. If it opens in WordPad or some other text editor, then you might have to change your setting somewhere. You might also try opening Excel first and then choose open file and browse for your. csv file. (5) Once your set list is in Excel you can sort it and filter it in a variety of ways. One of my favorite functions is the auto filter. Highlight the first row (with the headings) and choose [Data] -> [AutoFilter] from the menu. Little triangles should appear near each heading. When you click on the triangles you can choose one option from all the unique entries in the table; for example, in the sets wanted column, you can choose yes, and then all the rows which are not yes will be hidden, Then you could sort by year and theme, and you would have a very nice little shopping list to take to the toy store. I’m really very excited about this discovery. If the administrators wish to move my previous suggestion to the bottom of their list, that would be alright with me. My new feature request would be some kind of FAQ (frequently asked questions) page or how to page that would include little explanations like this one on how to use other features of the website I might be missing out on. I really love this site. Wishing you much prosperity in the new year.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 03 Jan 2008 14:38

bmwlego, your wish (no. 3) is now implemented!

Posted by dfenz in Ireland, 03 Jan 2008 15:50

Is it possible to incorporate a feature that will capture multiple copies of sets rather than simply whether I've a set or not? I'd like to be able to use Brickset to record quantities of sets in my collection. I know I can incorporate a column for this into an excel spreadsheet but it would be far easier if the quantities could transfer in directly.

Best wishes for the new year.

Posted by dfenz in Ireland, 04 Jan 2008 11:06

I thought my suggestion was reasonably clear, but perhaps its not. By quantity of sets I mean that I'd like to be able to specify whether I've more than one copy of the same set. I'm sure many people for example have multiple copies of star wars clone trooper battle packs and it would be useful if the 'my sets' feature could record that I have x number of battlepacks, for example, rather than just whether I have that set or not. This would allow me to better keep track of my collection. The suggestion has nothing whatsoever to do with quantities of pieces or money value! Hope that clarifies matters.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 04 Jan 2008 13:51

A lot of people request the ability to record how many of a particular set they have. I haven't done it for 2 reasons: First, for me and my collection, it is not an important piece of information. Second, and more importantly, I don't know how to incorporate it into the interface without cluttering it up. A Facebook-like pop-up window has been suggested which appears when you click on/hover over a hyperlink and that might work. Anyone any other ideas?

Posted by Jason in United States, 05 Jan 2008 04:33

Peeron.com allows users to record the number of copies of each set they own by clicking a link [Add copy], but I think that database is designed very differently. That database includes all parts contain in each set, and it totals all the parts in all my sets for me. It's really cool. It also totals the manufacturers suggested retail price for each set in my collection. That's a little harrowing to think I might have spent that much on this hobby. And it totals the number of minifigs in all my sets. I'll have to try to assemble them all some day to see what they look like all together. Anyway, since there are features of each database I like very much, I've been maintaining my set list on both sites.

Posted by Leggodt94 in United States, 05 Jan 2008 11:50

I don't really mind not being able to record that I have more than one of a set. And, I agree with Huw, letting people know that you have more than one of a set is not really important imformation. As long as you have at least one of a set that's all that matters. :)

Posted by legoguysw in United Kingdom, 05 Jan 2008 13:30

If its too hard to do, Huw, then it don't do it! Its not that important as you said, and will probably end up causing loads of glitches. If it was easy to do, then i would excpect you to go ahead, but since it isnt, dont waste your time over it! 9no offense meant to those who came up with the idea. But still, couldnt you just make it possible for people to submit it into their 'Sets I own' list twice? Then they could just delete any unwanted dupliates that occur?
Thanks,

Posted by legoguysw in United Kingdom, 05 Jan 2008 13:31

Or you could just have a coloumn going down beside the sets, split into boxes, for you to type the quantity into?

Posted by legoguysw in United Kingdom, 05 Jan 2008 14:28

I see

Posted by Leggodt94 in United States, 05 Jan 2008 16:21

Look, it's not really important, alright?

Posted by bmwlego in United States, 06 Jan 2008 12:01

I enjoy reading about other countries and LEGO fans' experience with LEGO there as well. It is cool to hear what stores others shop at and what stores we have in common. I don't mind hearing at all about this type of stuff at all. It is just when all of the threads change to the same topic that gets to me.

Posted by Darth, 06 Jan 2008 13:06

Merry Christmas!

Posted by Leggodt94 in United States, 06 Jan 2008 18:02

To dwarf vader, you seem to always be coming to the idea that brickset needs a topicless forum so that commenteers can just talk about whatever they want to that is LEGO-related. Well, that is precisely what email is for. If you want to talk with someone without straying off topic, THEN JUST EMAIL THEM!

Posted by legolover94 in New Zealand, 07 Jan 2008 00:41

Yea that would be a good idea Leggodt

Posted by legolover94 in New Zealand, 07 Jan 2008 15:58

Yea that would be cool. Hopefully they will do it.

Posted by Commander Bacara, 08 Jan 2008 10:37

I agree with redfox. We already have MOCpages and a few others that don't come to mind. I think Brickset should stay the way it is.

Posted by legolover94 in New Zealand, 08 Jan 2008 15:37

It would be great if it did tho.

Posted by Leggodt94 in United States, 08 Jan 2008 15:42

I agree with redfox and Commander Cody on this one.

Something that might help you though fighter is when you come up with a new idea for a site update, make sure that it has something to do with Lego REFERENCING, 'cause that is what brickset is. So, let's see, everyone's own creations put on their profile.......hmmmm.....nope, doesn't sound like referencing to me. ;)
