Welcome, 32768th member!

  • Welcome, 32768th member!

Posted by Huw, 07 Jul 2010 13:44. Filed under Brickset.

Unless you're a techie programmer this is not a particularly significant number, however today when the 32768th member joined the site they were unable to use it properly because of a coding error which couldn't handle numbers bigger than 32767, which if you are a geek you'll know is the highest number a datatype of int16 can hold.

Anyway, I'd like to apologise to all of today's new members: hopefully now the site is working properly for you. Welcome to Brickset!

So, we might expect problems again with the 2147483648th member... ;)

Posted by just2good in United States, 07 Jul 2010 13:54

lol

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 07 Jul 2010 14:10

Ha, nice! Hey, new feature suggestion: Under the "Did you know?" section, you should add how many members there are! Oh, and who was the "lucky" member?...

Posted by shieldsy in Ireland, 07 Jul 2010 14:10

@Alemas,good idea. Yeah,I would like to know who the 32768th member is.

Posted by legominifig221 in United Kingdom, 07 Jul 2010 14:14

wow 32768 members

Posted by Toa Of Justice in United States, 07 Jul 2010 14:18

I took an introductory Java programming class, so I understand the significance of this article. May I recommend the use of the int64 (Java long) datatype instead? :P Even if everyone on Earth joined Brickset, I don't think you would encounter any coding errors with that datatype!

Posted by aaronptrck in United States, 07 Jul 2010 14:30

Java eh? I wanted to throw my computer out the window when I took programming.... I'll never forget my favorite (sarcasm!) java line: public static void main(String args[])

Posted by EdwinJackson in Norway, 07 Jul 2010 14:36

I know the number 32767 from Duke Nukem. In the level editor, when we code an secret area or room, it is 32767. I bet there is some meaning in '65535' as well, i dont know what.

Posted by Jarod98 in United Kingdom, 07 Jul 2010 14:49

Who was the 'lucky member?!

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 07 Jul 2010 14:51

65536 is 2 to the power 16 so it's a very significant figure in programming. A 16 bit integer can hold numbers in the range -32767 to +32767

Yes, izanette, the site will break again when the 2147483648th member joins :-)

Posted by brickmatt in United States, 07 Jul 2010 14:54

^ That's about 1/3 of the world's population, so I think we'll be okay for a while:)

Being a computer science major, I was aware of the size limits, but had never memorized them. I've never written anything that uses that big of a number, anyway!

Posted by Murdoch17 in United States, 07 Jul 2010 15:10

Wow... Huw, youve created quite a popular website! I can't help but wonder how many LEGO.com members are Brickset members as well. I know I am one of them! Oh, and who is the lucky member? Thanks for creating such a great site!

@ Alemas: Great idea! I hope Huw uses it!

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 07 Jul 2010 15:22

Lucky member number 32768 is 'golfmeleon'

@Alemas, unfortunately around 15,000 members haven't used the site since 2009 (when I started recording dates people log in) so it's not a particularly meaningful number.

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 07 Jul 2010 15:45

AHHHHHH, TOO MUCH GEEKNESS!
Ha, I'm just kidding. I know a lot about computers, but I'm definitely no programmer.

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 07 Jul 2010 16:14

@Huw: Oh, I see... anyway, do you know how many Brickset members there have been SO FAR? Including inactive members?

Posted by Jarod98 in United Kingdom, 07 Jul 2010 16:39

@Alemas - How can there be an inactive members, it's impossible to delete your account (or at least I thought so). The only way your account could get deleted was if you were expelled from Brickset.

Posted by Alemas in Germany, 07 Jul 2010 16:42

@Jarod: In fact! Members just leave their accounts, they do not delete them, they just abandon Brickset!

Posted by Jarod98 in United Kingdom, 07 Jul 2010 16:58

@Alemas - I know, but they're still technically on Brickset.

Posted by legobob in United States, 07 Jul 2010 17:22

ha Huw I'd like to see a feature that tells you what member you are example Huw: member 1

Posted by Bodyguards17 in United States, 07 Jul 2010 17:30

I'd like the search bar to be able to search members!

Posted by Sky-guardian in United States, 07 Jul 2010 17:54

Nice!!!! That's a lot of members!

Posted by jwsmart in United States, 07 Jul 2010 18:24

OK, now you've got me curious. What is the site written in? asp.net?

Posted by BioFreak877 in United States, 07 Jul 2010 19:06

How could anyone abandon this lovely site? I hope it wasn't that they lost the love of Lego!

Posted by ShatteredGnome in United States, 07 Jul 2010 19:32

@legobo: me too! I wonder what member i was...

Posted by legobob in United States, 07 Jul 2010 20:00

@ShatteredGnome7675 lets both contact Huw and see if he can do that

Posted by legomaniac in United States, 07 Jul 2010 23:19

Wow as a PC nerd I never knew this lol You learn new things even if its from a LEGO website :D

Posted by Hobie819 in United States, 08 Jul 2010 00:22

Not a computer nerd, but huw, 20,000 active members is still quite an accomplishment. I dont really post much, but you do a great service for all of us full out LEGO fans and all of us closet LEGO junkies that wish we had more money for LEGO's... but then again, dont we all wish we had more money for LEGO's?

Posted by jamonlego in Australia, 08 Jul 2010 02:08

looks like your own Y2K issue - that brings back the memories

Posted by DrathMaul1997 in United Kingdom, 08 Jul 2010 06:04

Wow, didn't know there where so many ppl!

Posted by Branko in Australia, 08 Jul 2010 11:29

this just makes me wonder: Why would you use a signed integer for a membership counter? Did you expect members to leave before having signed up?

;-p

congrats on the amount of members!

Posted by Parax in United Kingdom, 08 Jul 2010 13:03

wot no GUID's?

Unfortunately the 'Lucky' member number 32768 was turned away due to an error! golfmeleon got there first after the fix!

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 08 Jul 2010 13:45

@Parax, it would accept them as members (the database key is an integer) but one of the stored procedure calls was passing a int16 which caused an overflow error when they attempted to view the home page.

It's all fixed now. I may add your member number to your profile, although it's fairly meaningless, being only the unique ID in the database table.

@Bodyguards17, you can search for members in the 'My Friends' area: http://www.brickset.com/myFriends/

Posted by mephinc in United States, 08 Jul 2010 14:28

lol.. the last time i seen a problem like this was back in the bbs days. ahhh the good ol days of playin l.o.r.d. and getting too many forest fights and boom.... suddenly i have -32768.. stupid computers.

i coulda sworn errors like these were taken into account a long time ago. but i guess not.

My life's build around the powers of 2... I hate when I can't stop myself from saying 1024 GBytes instead of 1000 GBytes as everyone else. everything is either 1 or 0...

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 10 Jul 2010 15:07

@legomatt, Are you serious? The name of the website is brickset, not brickdating!

Posted by legomatt in United Kingdom, 10 Jul 2010 20:11

Jonbuddy... Jonbuddy... Jonbuddy... I would be both surprised and a little disappointed with humankind in general, should somebody interpret that comment as being anything other than light humour. I'm sure you knew I was joking... Of course, don't let that stop any single ladies out there... LOL ;o>

...and just imagine the first ever brickset wedding, we could all make Lego hats!

Posted by Brickmatic in United States, 12 Jul 2010 18:04

I made a Lego hat for class day at my college graduation. It was awesome.

Posted by ET in United States, 12 Jul 2010 23:48

@brickmatt, I don't know, a lot of people like Lego. We can take a third of the world! Ready your computer Huw!

Better than that one movie where the meaning of life is 42.
