    8098: Clone Turbo Tank
    Star Wars/The Clone Wars, 2010
    More details...
    ©2010 LEGO Group

The Summer Star Wars sets are starting to show up at Toys R Us stores around the country.  I found the new Clone Turbo Tank, new General Grievous' Starfighter, Palpatine's Shuttle, Slave I and Plo Koon's Starfighter at my local TRU.  I didn't find the Wampa Cave, though there was indeed a spot for it.  I also didn't see the new AT-AT Walker but I can't imagine it's far behind.

    Prices were as follows:

    • Clone Turbo Tank  - $119.99
    • General Grievous' Starfighter - $49.99
    • Palpatine's Shuttle - $59.99
    • Slave I - $79.99
    • Plo Koon's Starfighter - $24.99
    • Hoth Wampa Cave - $39.99

Additional Note:  It appears that TRU just marked up most of their LEGO sets again, but these BOGO 50% sales more than make up for the difference in my opinion.  I also didn't see any of the new Train sets but am hoping to find them later this week while the coupon is still valid.

at my local tru, Austin tx... we had these sw sets plus the two large train sets but not the smaller sets like the level crossing or the station. can't wait to get that Wampa!

Posted by liisadd76 in United States, 14 Jul 2010 00:42

I was at the South Austin TRU twice today...the first time (this morning), all of the Star Wars sets were on the shelf: Palpatine's Shuttle, Turbo Tank, Wampa Cave, Grievous Starfighter...I purchased the Slave 1 for my son. I returned this evening to buy the Wampa cave, and was told that everything had been pulled from the shelves because "George Lucas sent an email to all TRUs and told them not to sell the sets until August 6th". Thankfully, the employee let me buy the set because I had it on hold. Also, at Target, tried to get Lego Cad Bane's speeder using the DPCI, which says it is in the stock room. Same story...can't sell it until August 6th!

How come sets like slave 1 and palpatines shuttle have the same number price (£79.99 and $79.99 for Slave 1). The U.K. gets the bad deal again :(

Posted by Mr. Football in United States, 14 Jul 2010 04:16

Curious as to what the significance of August 6th is for Lucas? Will they be making a big Star Wars announcement that day? Something to coincide with SW Celebration? Perhaps they'll be announcing a new extension of Lego's Star Wars license? Anyone know?

Posted by c.lee.r in United States, 14 Jul 2010 04:49

well if it is august 6th that is good becuase i will have gotten paid then a trip to the lego store is in plan then september for the new shuttle.

Posted by Tuke97 in Finland, 14 Jul 2010 05:11

All the new Lego Star Wars sets were available here in Finland on the beginning of June.

Posted by Craig in Australia, 14 Jul 2010 05:54

The Hoth Wampa Cave is available in Australia $Au69.00 (Kmart) as well as clone turbo tank $Au189.00 (Target) That's it though at the moment. Got the Wampa Cave a few weeks ago and it is well worth getting. I modified and enlarged the cave perimeter a bit and it looks a bit better on my display shelves. I wish We could get the sets in Oz for the same prices you get in the $US.

Posted by Jarod98 in United Kingdom, 14 Jul 2010 07:39

All in all the prices are pretty good. Since TRU always marks up prices by a few bucks here's how much I think Lego will sell the sets for:

Clone Turbo Tank: $109.99
General Grievous' Starfighter: $39.99
Palpatine's Shuttle: $54.99
Slave I: $74.99
Plo Koon's Starfighter: $19.99
Hoth Wampa Cave: $34.99

Thse all seem like reasonable prices; I'll probably get the starfighter sets and maybe the Hoth Wampa Cave.

There are currently only two big events for Star Wars in Aug.
1.http://www.starwarscelebration.com/
Is the following week and on the 6th of Aug there will be a new book coming out for the Old Republic.

If there is something going on with an extension of the line then it will be big, however I think that Lego is going to want to start having true space sets come back. Space police is fine, however to be able to come back into the space theme would be a great move.

As far as the letter from Lucas. Um who do you want to get a fine from? Lego or Lucas? Um I would much rather take Lego as the one hitting me with a fine or lawsuit over selling stuff early vs. Lucas coming after me. The guy knows his products are going to sell and the stores know it as well. Depending on his contract (you know the lawyers wrote a good one), he most likely can yank his product from all of the stores if he really wanted to. TRU, Target and every other retailer knows this. So it is to their advantage to be nice.

Posted by legobob in United States, 14 Jul 2010 08:38

wow these are expensive never liked starwars so I don't care

Posted by Morgan19 in United States, 14 Jul 2010 08:52

>> but these BOGO 50% sales more than make up for the difference in my opinion.

So they're taking more of your money with the markup and then justifying spending more for the BOGO. How is that a good thing?

Posted by brickmaster123 in United States, 14 Jul 2010 09:10

WOOOO HOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by yellowcastle in United States, 14 Jul 2010 09:31

@Crt2 - I held off on buying any of the new SW sets as they weren't covered by the current coupon and I've been put on a budget by the wifey. :o) I did however, pickup 2 more Desert Ambush sets which I just love.

@Morgan19 - Take my purchase last night for example. The Desert Ambush is normally $11. I bought 2 which would have been $22 at Target, etc. TRU has bumped them up to $12, which I think is not unreasonable. The BOGO 50% Sale brought them down to $18 which was a net savings of $4 off MSRP. In this case, the sale really turned into BOGO 36% Off. The TRU markup does indeed get diluted much better on the higher priced sets. I recently picked up 2 Kingdoms Castles where TRU had them at $105 instead of $100. With the BOGO 50% Off sale, I got 2 of these for $157 instead of the expected $150. In this case, the sale turned into BOGO 43% Off. I am more than willing to absorb a reasonable TRU markup if they continue to run decent sales. But I agree that some of their markups are obnoxious such as Ambush in Cairo (36%), the little Kingdom's Tower (15%), or the Temple of Doom (11%).

Posted by blazetrooper501 in United States, 14 Jul 2010 09:37

I cant whait to get general grievous starfighter and the turbo tank. Today I got my brickmaster catolog and the mini exclusive set for november and december is a AT-AT walker so cool.

Posted by kaboomlegoman in United States, 14 Jul 2010 10:25

The prices are just... are just SAD!! OUCH OUCH OUCH OUCH OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by vezon8764 in United States, 14 Jul 2010 10:41

How come the Slave I is $80 when the 2006 one was $60? They're both the same size, with just about the same features! Rip-off!

Posted by polyester in United States, 14 Jul 2010 10:51

The fact that they raise their prices and then have the buy-two discounts is only helpful if you don't like Star Wars. Otherwise you get to buy the SW Legos at a higher price, without any discount. Making matters worse, my local TRU has a lousy selection that always seems to get lousier when the sales come around.

At least on the bright side, I'd be a lot poorer if TRU was a better store. :)

Posted by durins in United States, 14 Jul 2010 11:00

I'll be springing for the Wampa cave for sure, but the price on the Slave I is overwhelming to me. As a born-again LEGO fan (buying again for the first time since I was a kid, now that I have a 5 year-old son that loves them too) I really want a lot of the key Ep IV-VI sets, especially those from Empire. I'm not sure I can justify this kind of expense on one medium-sized ship.

Target does occasionally put SW sets on sale, right? There's also Wal-Mart, where I got the Freeco Speeder at a markdown of $20. Patience will have to be key for me.

Posted by OhioBobcat555 in United States, 14 Jul 2010 11:06

Yeah I am pretty disappointed the Slave 1 is as expensive as it is... especially when the previous Slave ship from the newer movies (you can tell I am only a middle ranged Star Wars' fan at best) around 2005 or 2006 was $50 or so. The new one... which looks amazing but very similar still is $80?!?! Okay, I may be a little off with the info but the point remains.

I talked to some of the Lego store employees at one of the stores near DC... the store I frequent. They were commenting that they were not making their marks at all. That is a shocker since money flows pretty well still around here. Lego should be careful with the prices! I have always felt as if Lego deserves premium pay if anything does but they better watch out from alienating average customers... especially at this time!

Posted by KJM72 in United States, 14 Jul 2010 11:09

Too bad the TRU BOGOHO doesn't work with Star Wars. Then I would've thought about the Slave 1.

Posted by legoman98 in United Kingdom, 14 Jul 2010 11:17

on uk's TRU website they have the slave 1 at £79.99, Hoth Wampa Cave at £34.99 and at at walker at £99.99 however i don't know whether instore they have more as ill be going to tamworth's TRU tomorrow night :0)

Posted by Luftlego in United States, 14 Jul 2010 11:47

I can confirm (at least for the US) that TRU has pulled all of the new Star Wars sets off of their store shelves until August 6th, due to a special request from Lucas.

Posted by Orange Lemons in United States, 14 Jul 2010 12:00

@ Everyone complaining about the price of the Slave I: Many of you were very excited when this set was announced, but now the price has practically made well over half of you lose intrest. LEGO, Lucas, and TRU has always done this, so what is there to complain about?

Conclusion, quit complaining about the prices cause that's how it is (unless there's a sale).

Posted by DrathMaul1997 in United Kingdom, 14 Jul 2010 12:03

Umm, Dollers to Pounds isn't 1 to 1 I thought? More like £1 is $0.70?
Doesn't that mean the US is getting better prices then the UK?

Posted by Ypres in Canada, 14 Jul 2010 12:08

Starwars prices and constant remakes are a huge part of the reason why I stopped buying Starwars sets for the past few years. I do have quite the starwars collection, I just could never get into the new sets. CW sets never appealed because of the weird looking minifigs so I didn't bother... despite the show's impressive quality. I'm still kind of upset TRU further ups their prices, although that could easily be Lego's fault. I'll have to ask my sister when the SW sets will be in my local Canadian TRU!

Posted by starfire2 in United States, 14 Jul 2010 12:17

The Wampa cave is listed on their website though it says it is out of stock on it. That is the only one they have online.

Posted by ShatteredGnome in United States, 14 Jul 2010 12:30

I just ordered last year's Echo Base from Amazon for a nice $20.00, which is a great deal with the added bonus of no sales tax. You can get great deals with patience, so I think that when these sets finally make it out, I might wait at least a few months and see if the Slave I goes down. If not, then I'll just get it anway. :D

Update: And it's about time we get a set release date! So excited...

Update again: Just realized Echo Base is my 99th set. Slave I can be my 100th :)

Posted by the_collector in United States, 14 Jul 2010 12:30

The sets are no longer available on their website, listed as out of stock. Looks like we will have to wait until august before we can get them.

Posted by Captain Blockbeard in United States, 14 Jul 2010 12:53

@DrathMaul1997 - I think you mean it the other way around. It takes more than $1 US to equal £1 in the UK. But otherwise, yes, you are correct that the US gets better prices on these (actually, all) Lego sets.

I know these prices are TRU mark-ups combined with higher prices for being licensed products, but I can't help but feel these prices are insane, no matter whether you're in the US paying in $ or in the UK paying in £. Take the Slave I for instance. I remember Jango Fett's Slave I costing $49.99, and comparing that to this new Slave I, the size and detail difference is negligible. Sure, there are extra figures, but that and inflation doesn't account for a more than 50% mark-up in price.

Posted by primetime in United Kingdom, 14 Jul 2010 13:07

@orange lemons. Thanks for your input but I see no complaints where the new SW set prices are concerned.

It's called being realistic, common sense, having an idea about when something is just too much. Nobody knew the prices would be this steep at the time of announcement so people are changing their minds.

When/if you had kids who liked the same products and had to buy twice then maybe you'd come to your senses.

Posted by legoDad42 in United States, 14 Jul 2010 13:15

Just looked at TRU's website...they have the Wampa outta' stock ($39.99) and the new AT-AT, also outta' stock ($109.99). None of the others listed.

Posted by j25727 in United States, 14 Jul 2010 13:25

oh i badly want slave I and general g's fighter, but 50$! wow thats pushing it a little, idk

Posted by legoDad42 in United States, 14 Jul 2010 13:36

I think some of the prices are too high...and yes I get the licensing tacked on and TRU's mark up but below according to Brickipedia...

- Hoth Wampa Cave is about 297pieces...$30.00 - $35.00 would be fair.
- Plo Kloon's Starfighter, 175pieces...$20.00 to $25.00 is fair.
- General Grievous' Starfighter, 454pieces...at $49.00, that's a fair price.
- Palpatine's Shuttle, 592pieces...at $59.00 is right on.
- Clone Turbo Tank, 1141pieces...$119.00 is fair.
- Cad Bane's Speeder, 318pieces...$35.00 to $40.00 isn't terrible.

Now Slave I is the one that's over the top...'cause I believe MOST people want this set and they're marking that up too much because of it. Like giving you an aftermarket price to start at retail...unless it's listed as a limited edition (but I'm not sure it is). It's 573pieces...so for $80.00 retail, that's $15.00 to $20.00bucks too high IMHO.
And for me, that's the set I want the most...so I'm playing right into their marketing hands...;)

Also the new AT-AT (another bad price)is around 819pieces so $90 - $100(tops) would be fair but it's retailing for $109.99.

Posted by atkinsar in United Kingdom, 14 Jul 2010 14:48

All the sets are now listed on the Lego site UK as 'not available', all except for the new At-At that is. The older motorised At-At is still available though.

What I don't get is, how are they going to sell two At-Ats at the same time for pretty much the same price when one is motorised and the other isn't??

...and why is Hoth Wampa Cave listed under Clone Wars??

Posted by Ha876 in United States, 14 Jul 2010 14:58

i was just wondering if the turbo tank came with 7 minifigs being anakin , ahsoka, bane, aayla, 2 clones, and a battle droid because this is what legoshop.com uk had on the information bar under the image of the turbo tank

Posted by Commander-Cody in United Kingdom, 14 Jul 2010 15:02

In answer to your question atkinsar: because the Wampa cave is meant to be part of Episode 5? :) But yes, it's true, I just checked before I saw your post and was going to say the same thing. Apparently, you won't get the massive Episode 6 style Imperial Shuttle until September 3rd in the UK (not that I could afford it).

I'm still waiting for Cad Bane's Speeder to surface at £44.99, but I just got the £50 Grievous Starfighter (!)

Posted by yellowcastle in United States, 14 Jul 2010 15:23

@ Atkinsar - I was curious myself why all the new boxes are branded the same even though they represent events from Episode III, V, and the Clone Wars Cartoons. I also only just realized that the At-AP Walker came with realish clone troopers as opposed to the cartoony ones you'd find with the At-Te, At-Ot, etc. And I'm unclear as to which side of the line the new Arc Fighter and Palpatine's Shuttle fall as none of the figures appear overstylized like the cartoon. Can anyone guide me here? :o)

Posted by starfire2 in United States, 14 Jul 2010 15:34

I just called our local Lego store and they said they don't have a release date yet.
They said maybe August or September.

Posted by DrathMaul1997 in United Kingdom, 14 Jul 2010 15:53

@captin Blockbeard - yeah, as said before, I paid £40 for the old boba Slave 1, Why's this twice as much? And yes, I did get it wrong, sorry :)

Wampa Cave now in stock at the US TRU web site

Posted by Tom_2772 in United States, 14 Jul 2010 16:38

I'm really kind of stuck here. Seeing as how I missed out on all other Slave 1's, I'm extremely tempted to bite the bullet and get this one but for 80 bucks I better be getting that white Boba Fett with it somehow. I'm also interested in The Turbo Tank, but I usually just collect sets from the movies only. I remember going to Wal-mart years ago and seeing Jango Fetts Slave 1 marked down to 15 bucks. Really kicking myself in the butt for passing up on that haha

Posted by legomatt in United Kingdom, 14 Jul 2010 16:42

I am kicking myself to absolute oblivion for not getting the previous Slave-1 when it came out... unfortunately i was unwell at the time and lost interest in lego for a while. But as much as i reaally badly want a Slave-1, I just cannot justify paying that much. I'm hoping Argos gets it in, and does a Lego sale at the same time. Well, we can hope... if they do, they'll clean up on it.

Clone Turbo Tank - ????
General Grievous' Starfighter - $69.99
Palpatine's Shuttle - $79.99
Slave I - $109.99
Plo Koon's Starfighter - $34.99
Hoth Wampa Cave - $54.99

Huge mark up on USD prices. These are on my wait until they are on sale list. Wont be getting the turbo tank, it looks ugly, and the only good thing in it is Ms. Secura.

Well, I ran to the local TRU last night to pick up Slave 1 which turned out to be a trip of disappointment. All were sold out. As far as stores refuseing to sell until August 1 the TRU in Lexington Kentucky had all the sets available except the AT-AT. Sadly though all that was left when I arrived was 1 Clone Turbo Tank and 1 Palpatine's Shuttle; everything else was gone. I just ordered the Slave 1 off their website though, so it's whatever.
