It seems that the Harry Potter sets are now out of stock at Tesco Direct. I reckon that means one of two things:

Either, everyone here ordered Tesco's entire stock between bluemoose's annoucement yesterday and today or, more likely, someone at LEGO had a quiet word with Tesco after reading about their early availability here and asked them to stop selling them.

Whatever, I'll be picking up mine from the shop tomorrow and it seems that the 'Brickset effect' strikes again!

Posted by atkinsar in United Kingdom, 01 Sep 2010 15:47

I ordered hogwarts yesterday so I am pretty lucky, I will review it on brickset and youtube

Posted by Darren Coppinger in Ireland, 01 Sep 2010 15:53

when has the brickset effect happened before?

Posted by nandel in United States, 01 Sep 2010 16:05

@Darren - It happened with the series 2 minifigs early last week on TRU.com, and I'm sure there have been other cases as well.

Posted by copperwonder96 in United States, 01 Sep 2010 16:08

@Darren, Re: nandel, it also happened with Amazon.Fr with the early release of 2010 SW. They got shut down a few weeks later. Anyone else recall the effect?

What a shame. I was hoping on buying a few this weekend possibly but that of course is out of the question. Looks like I will have to wait two months [huh].

I went in to store today and ordered The Burrow i'm told I will get it Friday, though I, or we, have so much to build at the moment it might not get opened till Christmas anyway.

If anyone has clubcard vouchers pay attention. Till Friday (I think) £10 worth of voucher can be exchanged for £20 worth of toys(or other Tesco direct products). I used £35 worth of tokens, paid an additional £14.90 something for "The Burrow" and "Plo Kloons Starfighter". Saving £70 (£35 really) seeing as we don't really budget for them. Offer ends 5th September.

I contacted The LEGO Company, and they said that the sets were not supposed to be available in stores or on websites before October. So I guess they contacted Tesco about this. EVERYONE WHO MANAGED TO GET SOME SETS: YOU ARE REALLY LUCKY! I'm gonna have to wait another month... :-(

For those who now own the new harry potter sets even if it's just one of them e.g quidditch match you are very lucky.

Does anyone have these sets? If yes please can you take some close up photos especially of the castle? Thanks

Posted by yellowcastle in United States, 02 Sep 2010 09:35

I hear they're talking about making the Brickset Effect into a movie with Ashton Kutcher playing the part of Huw. :o)

Ordered all 6 sets from Tesco Direct at 2 AM on the 1st of September after seeing the information on here! Received in the post this morning. Really pleased to have all six sets more than a month early. Happy to post photos or answer questions but I'm not opening the boxes :)

Posted by Matthew in United Kingdom, 02 Sep 2010 10:29

@yellowcastle - lol

@Natoron1979 - Please can you email me (links to) photos of the back and sides of the boxes to mgbutler@live.co.uk. Also a rough guide of the sizes of the boxes? When are you going to open them? Cheers

Posted by Natotron1979 in United Kingdom, 02 Sep 2010 10:41

We are photographing now. Give us an hour :)
I would love to open them but I've got so much else to build. Wasn't expecting to get a chance to grab these! Good times.

Thanks so much Natotron1979!

For those of you who have these sets and have already built them, could you please let me know how the Hogwarts Express, Freeing Dobby, and Hagrid's Hut are different from prior versions and what their special features are? The other three sets - Hogwarts Castle, the Burrow, and Quidditch Match all look fantastic in every way! :-)

Posted by finger2314 in United Kingdom, 02 Sep 2010 16:49

@anyone who has the castle: Is it worth it?

Posted by jsutton in United Kingdom, 02 Sep 2010 18:26

@yellowcastle - I heard it was Kevin Spacey ;-)

Posted by Carnigee77 in United States, 02 Sep 2010 19:57

Am I the only one who thinks these are a bit over priced? Like Hagrids Hut?

Posted by primetime in United Kingdom, 03 Sep 2010 05:20

LEGO? Overpriced?

Unfortunately for me (as a LEGO Star Wars collector) my son has recently become obsessed with Harry Potter. I'm used to the financial kicking that LEGO dishes out so it looks like I'm going back for more punishment.

The prices are scandalous if the Tesco Direct catalogue is anything to go by. £40 for Hagrid's Hut, £10 for Dobby's Release. Scandalous as always but unless we all stop buying these sets then LEGO will charge what we will all keep paying.

Posted by lukehankenobi in United Kingdom, 03 Sep 2010 08:45

Tesco just called! Oh yeah! Now i'm off to get The Burrow and Plo koons thingy. Good old Tescos.

Posted by Zacherano in United States, 04 Sep 2010 12:02

The Brickset effect is definitely influential, but I guess not as much for us American Lego fans :)

Posted by nexus15 in United States, 05 Sep 2010 00:17

well if "lukehankenobi" is any indication TLG reading brickset really needs to pull their head out of the mudd and slap around their distributors. TRU in the US always releases early and it seems other stores (amazon France) are trying to squeeze by and try to not get caught. Lego seriously needs to do more than a slap on the wrist to keep them in line. Its clearly not working with Tesco if 'lukehankenobi' gets those sets. I know staff at Brand Retail stores have to respect release dates and loose constantly to TRU and the like when they release early.

On the other hand when you don't order or buy from Lego you loose out on the vip points and if others aren't running some kind of sale or special its really a worse deal to buy early. IMHO the early gratification is not worth the extra money.
